In this episode, we discuss the work of the late, great Fredric Jameson. Basing ourselves on his Marxism and Form, The Political Unconscious, and Archaeologies of the Future, we talk about the notion that history is only accessible in narrative form, the concept of social totality, the tension between poststructuralist criticism and historical materialist thought, and the problems plaguing the increasingly specialized and alienated intellectual division of labor in our times. What do we want from cultural studies, and what do we want from the social sciences, in twenty-first century Marxist thought? It's a spicy one. This is just a short teaser. In this episode, I interview Dr. Fredric Schiffer, psychiatrist, research associate at McLean Hospital, associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, and pioneer of Dual Brain Psychology. We discuss his innovative approach to understanding and treating trauma, addiction, and other mental health challenges, as outlined in his latest book, Good-bye Anxiety, Depression, Addiction, & PTSD.Dr. Schiffer explains how each brain hemisphere functions as an independent mind. One side is often troubled, traumatized, and negative, while the other is healthier, more positive, and mature. However, it's not immediately apparent which hemisphere is which in each individual. Using simple techniques like covering one visual field with your hand, an envelope, or special glasses, you can determine which side is which. This method builds on split-brain research, the brain's visual pathways, and the work of Freud. We also discuss near-infrared light therapy (transcranial photobiomodulation), applied to the forehead to stimulate the healthier hemisphere. Combined with psychotherapy, these techniques—the light therapy and eye-covering technique—help the healthier side work with its troubled counterpart to facilitate healing. These methods are effective for treating trauma, addiction (likely including fentanyl), and other mental health issues. They can restore health and power to both brain hemispheres and even help transform relationships, communities, and entire societies. In a far-reaching conversation with the critic Ryan Ruby, we unpack the legacy and impact of Fredric Jameson's landmark work of Marxist literary criticism, The Political Unconscious: Narrative as a Socially Symbolic Act. Jameson's text argues for the explanatory richness and coherency of a Marxist hermeutical approach to interpreting the social function of the literary text. The guiding principle of Jameson's methodology is that any commentary that fails to historicize the narrative strategies at work as symbolic expressions of terrains of social conflict will be incomplete. Instead, he argues that we should view the interplay between the manifest content and historical subtext of the literary work as enacting imaginative "solutions" to social contradictions immanent to the dominant mode of production. In addition, we connect Jameson's historical materialist methodology to Ryan's new book of poetry, Context Collapse. Context Collapse is a playfully experimental work of philosophical verse that tells the story of the evolution of poetry in the Western tradition through the lense of information technology.Buy Context Collapse: https://www.sevenstories.com/books/4657-context-collapse?srsltid=AfmBOopFByZKYoPP5UObNCZ32p6oIVIkXeNBH5TAW7KUUED-v7bgLPvMPlease consider becoming a paying subscriber to our Patreon to get exclusive bonus episodes, early access releases, and future bookish merch: https://www.patreon.com/MoralMinorityFollow us on Twitter(X).Devin: @DevinGoureCharles: @satireredactedEmail us at: moralminoritypod@gmail.com

Writer, theorist, and UC Berkeley professor (and communist) Jasper Bernes joins us for a discussion of the life and work of Fredric Jameson, an absolute beast of Marxist philosophy and cultural critique who passed away last month following a long and illustrious life. Following a summary of Jameson's career and a discussion of his epistemological approach, the crew digs into some of his ideas. What is it about the postmodern/neoliberal era that simultaneously creates amnesia and nostalgia? How are humans more atomized than ever, yet losing any real sense of individuality? What purpose can utopian science fiction, like that of Jameson protege Kim Stanley Robinson, serve as we try to find a way out of this exhausted system called capitalism? And, in this era in which nothing is shocking, can there be such a thing as truly radical art? Matt and Corbs talk about the recently departed Frederic Jameson and his thoughts on VIDEODROME, David Cronenberg's 1983 masterpiece about the terrifying merger of man and machine occuring en masse in front of your very eyes and also the pleasures and perils of having a gigantic hole in your abdomen that someone can stick living videotapes inside, compelling you to murder people on behalf of a shadowy right wing technoconspiracy. Read 'Totality as Conspiracy' here. Matt told me to link this piece about Jameson by Jeet Heer. If it's bad, I didn't read it, blame Matt. Matt reccomends I Love Lucy and The Outer Limits on PlutoTV. Corbin reccomends "Charlie Hustle" by Keith O'Brien. He wrote about the book a while back here. Next week's episode is about Megalopolis, which is maybe the self absorbed movie of all time, currently in theaters.

Fredric Michael Lynn was born on February 3, 1952He arrived on the big league scene like a bolt of lightning through the evening sky. Fred Lynn played in his first game on September 5, 1974 and proceeded to smash major league pitching to the tune of a .419 batting average and a .698 slugging average over his first 15 games. He followed that up with one of the greatest rookie seasons of all time, leading the Red Sox to the World Series and earning the Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player, and Gold Glove awards for the 1975 season. Lynn was the first player to achieve this trifecta, an accomplishment matched by Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners in 2001.Fred Lynn had the greatest coming out party in baseball history in 1975, when as a rookie, he played a stellar center field for the Red Sox and earned the American League Most Valuable Player Award. All season, opposing pitchers searched in vain for a way to get the left-handed hitter out, and all season they were left scratching their heads. Lynn hit .331 in his freshman campaign, and followed it with a .314 mark in 1976, but injuries kept him out of the lineup all too frequently for the remainder of his career. He was healthy in 1978 and 1979, and in the latter year, he had his best overall campaign, belting 39 homers to go with 122 RBI, 116 runs scored, 42 doubles, 82 walks, and a .333 average. But after he was traded by Boston to the Angels, he was never quite the same player. He did recapture his magic twice after leaving Red Sox Nation, however. In 1983 he hit the first grand slam in All-Star Game history, and in the 1982 League Championship Series, he punished Brewers' pitchers for a .611 batting average and 11 hits in the Angels' five-game defeat. Seemingly destined to become one of the game's greats, Lynn never met those lofty (and unfair) expectations, but he still produced 306 homers and more than 1,100 RBI in his injury-riddled career. After he collected 11 hits in five games and batted .611 in the 1982 Playoffs, Fred Lynn became the first player on a losing team to be named Most Valuable Player in a League Championship Series.

Are you looking for advice on how to stop caring what people think of you or how to be confident? Our desire to impress others has been distorted by social media. Social media has set wildly photoshopped expectations of who or what we should be. Our lives have been commodified and assigned values through likes, share, or retweets, so we live with the constant pressure of what will they think of me. As a result, our desire for validation and our sensitivity to criticism increased. Granted, our insecurities are also formed due to trauma suffered in early childhood or negligent or abusive parents. But, what if you could stop caring about what others think? What would happen then? The possibilities are endless, but I am willing to bet that you would feel a lot lighter and happier. So, here are some ways to stop caring about what others think of you. Det är liksom hela grejen att vi pratar om vad som händer, avsnitt för avsnitt. Vi föreslår att ni ser avsnittet först och lyssnar på podden efteråt.

Modern networked applications generate a lot of data, and every business wants to make the most of that data. Most of the time, that means moving production data through some transformation process to get it ready for the analytics process. But what if you could have in-app analytics? What if you could generate insights directly from production data?On this sponsored episode of the podcast, we talk with Stanimira Vlaeva, Developer Advocate at MongoDB, and Fredric Favelin, Technical Director, Partner Presales at MongoDB, about how a serverless database can minimize the distance between producing data and understanding it.Episode notes:Stanimira talked a lot about using BigQuery with MongoDB Atlas on Google Cloud Run. If you need to skill up on these three tools, check out this tutorial. Once you've got the hang of it, get your data connected with Confluent Connetors. With Atlas, you can transform your data in JavaScript. Connect with Stanimira on LinkedIn and Twitter. Connect with Fredric on LinkedIn. **We're spending a couple of weeks away from the microphone over the Christmas and New Year period. This means that although we won't be publishing any new guest appearances until mid-January, we're going to be bringing back some of our favourite older episodes that deserve another listen.**This week's High Performance Academy Tuned In podcast guest comes to us all the way from Oslo, Norway.Fredric Aasbø is the winningest driver in Formula D history, with a bunch of championships under his belt and the chiselled jawline to match. Fredric recently took some time out of his busy winter ice drifting schedule to sit down with Andre and discuss all things drift — the driving, the cars, the setups, the business — all of it.Use ‘PODCAST75' for $75 off your first HPA course here: https://hpcdmy.co/hpa-tuned-inThe conversation begins with a look back into Fredric's past, from the early days of his grandmother teaching him how to use the E-brake to control a sliding car on ice, to his experiences in karting and drifting as teenager, through to the stark realisation that getting into the pro-level motorsport game — let alone to the very top — means making big sacrifices and pouring everything you have into your dream. Fredric confirms that, as we suspected, there are no free rides in motorsport for the vast majority of us.Andre and Fredric then get into the finer details of drifting at the highest levels, from studying and understanding the judging system, to driving techniques, sponsorship pressures, and even the need to fine-tune your "bullsh*t detector".Fredric also dives into the heavy-duty technical side of the sport and its vehicles, discussing how these pro drift monsters actually work, and how he was able to dominate with a little four-cylinder in an economy car body... Over and over again.Interested in learning how to do your own wheel alignment for the track or street? Start with a free alignment & suspension 101 lesson now: hpcdmy.co/alignmentfThere are plenty of interesting tidbits to dig into here when it comes to how Fredric and his team set up his cars for each track with asymmetric alignments, turbo sizes, gear ratios, tyre pressures, and a whole lot more. Like to skid cars? This is the episode for you.
