Matt redefines melatonin as the brain's "clock whisperer" rather than a sedative, and explains that the hormone signals biological night rather than forcing sleep. Drawing on a meta-analysis, Matt reveals that a 4mg dose taken three hours before bed offers the most effective nudge to the internal clock. He also illustrates why melatonin acts as a tide chart for sleep timing, not a brute-force pill for primary insomnia. The episode explores melatonin's role in jet lag and shift work while addressing safety. Matt deconstructs a study linking long-term use to heart failure, clarifying the difference between relative and absolute risk, introduces "confounding by indication", and emphasizes why behavioral pillars like light and temperature remain the superior foundations for health. Matt concludes that melatonin is a watchmaker's tool for timing, not a sledgehammer for sleep. Please note that Matt is not a medical doctor, and none of the content in this podcast should be considered medical advice in any way, shape, or form, nor prescriptive in any way.Clean biological living requires precision. This week, Kate and Caroline Moss revisit the beloved Mama Slay at the Lake episode with a director's cut of our delirious 6 AM conversation about irreverent merch, warm beans, Facebook walls, Maxine culture, and Steve Madden platform loafers, followed by a brand new conversation where we get into pun drift, Disney adults in matching shirts, the grievance merch pipeline, Kate's Hamilton/American Girl mashup, and why lake town signs are the truest window into the suppressed psyche of second home motherhood. B is on vacation, so this week we have Tracy on the podcast joining Amanda. Charleston's lost boys continue to be messy. A slightly different angle on why we don't want to see Salley's "pick me" energy. Why is Whitner still single? Real Housewives of Potomac's reunion Part 1. Wendy is whispering - is this performative or is she a shell of her former self? And why didn't their conversation give us any confidence about their innocence? Amanda catches Stacey in a lie - did anyone else catch that? Angel can't seem to get out of her own way, plus what we think makes her a less than ideal housewife. We have some exclusive Summer House tea that will make you want to go back and rewatch the first three episodes of the season. It makes a lot of things make more sense, that's for sure. And last but not least, Kelly Dodd at war with a plastic surgeon and she's very much outmatched and outwitted. This week's episode of Cocktails and Gossip is brought to you by our sponsor, Caraway. On today's episode, I'm joined by Alli Webb for an honest, behind-the-scenes conversation about building Drybar from a single storefront into a $255M brand — and what it really takes to evolve as a founder. We break down how Alli identified a white space in the beauty industry, scaled a service-based business at lightning speed, expanded into product, and ultimately made the decision to raise private equity and bring in a CEO. She shares candid insights on fundraising, delegation, leadership growth, and the hard lessons that come with scaling fast. We also explore the emotional side of entrepreneurship — navigating divorce, loss, and personal upheaval while leading a company, the identity crisis that can follow selling your business, and how self-awareness becomes a founder's greatest superpower. Finally, Alli opens up about starting over with her new brand, embracing natural curls after years as the “blowout queen,” and what she's doing differently the second time around. Whether you're building, scaling, fundraising, or redefining yourself after success, this episode is packed with real-world wisdom and founder truth. On this, our 314th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss love, coffee, and AI. For Valentine's Day, Bret shares his thoughts on myths, love, and soulmates, and we discuss how relationships form—both in the abstract and in our case—and how relationships cannot be antagonistic or about short time horizons. Then: new research finds that drinking moderate amounts of coffee or tea—but not if decaffeinated—slows cognitive decline. And: is AI coming for us, and if so, how soon? How fast are LLM's evolving, whose work will they disappear, and is concern or hope the more constructive response? We can see some of how AI will change our world; what can we not yet see? Finally: could menial, repetitive work (“drudgery”) have more to recommend it than we know?*****Our sponsors:Caraway: Non-toxic, highly functional & beautiful cookware and bakeware. The peptide industry just hit $328 million in imports from China in nine months, and the fastest-growing buyers aren't bodybuilders. They're women in their 30s, 40s, and 50s who were told their labs look "fine" when they know something is deeply wrong. In this episode, I break down why peptides like BPC-157 and TB-500 are being aggressively marketed to women in perimenopause, why there isn't a single randomized controlled trial proving they're safe or effective in humans, and what the actual evidence says about brain fog, muscle loss, joint pain, and metabolic decline. I explore why the "your bloods are normal" dismissal has destroyed women's health, how hormone replacement therapy actually protects your brain when timed correctly, why GLP-1s work when peptides don't, and what protein, sleep, and resistance training do that no research chemical can replicate, because the foundations of brain health will never trend on TikTok, but they're the only things backed by decades of rigorous science. *Reduce your risk of Alzheimer's with my science-backed protocol for women 30+: * https://go.neuroathletics.com.au/youtube-sales-page Subscribe to The Neuro Experience for evidence-based conversations at the intersection of brain science, longevity, and performance. *TOPICS DISCUSSED* 00:00 Intro: Why women are the fastest-growing peptide buyers 07:01 Perimenopause reality: why "your labs look fine" is destroying women's health 15:20 What peptides actually are and the missing human evidence 31:00 Quality control disasters and documented side effects 39:50 What actually works: resistance training, protein, and muscle preservation 44:30 Hormone replacement therapy and brain protection 51:14 GLP-1 receptor agonists: evidence-based use vs. gray market risks *Thank you to our sponsors* Caraway: https://carawayhome.com/neuro10 Timeline Mitopure: http://timeline.com/NEURO Function Health: https://www.functionhealth.com/tcm/louisanicola _______ I'm Louisa Nicola - clinical neurophysiologist - Alzheimer's prevention specialist - founder of Neuro Athletics. Matt and Dr. Eti Ben Simon begin their latest AMA by exploring somniloquy as fragmented noise within Stage 2 NREM sleep. They distinguish these vocalizations from REM Sleep Behavior Disorder, where the brain's paralysis mechanism fails. The pair also examines how Long Covid triggers chronic sleep fragmentation in half of all patients. This disruption is tethered to systemic inflammation and elevated C-reactive protein. The hosts find sparse evidence for CBD and CBN, noting a pattern of pharmacological tolerance, and observe that users require massive dose escalations to maintain a fading baseline of benefit. They go on to address the bedroom environment, emphasizing air quality and carbon dioxide risks, and, finally, reinforce consistency as the most potent tool for anchoring the human circadian rhythm. Please note that Matt is not a medical doctor, and none of the content in this podcast should be considered medical advice in any way, shape, or form, nor prescriptive in any way.One of this week's sponsors, AG1, is one that Matt relies upon for his foundational nutrition. Forrest and somatic therapist Elizabeth Ferreira explore a common source of relationship conflict: the mismatch between “fixing” (moving quickly into problem-solving) and “feeling” (wanting attunement and empathy before solutions). They talk about where these patterns come from, how each functions as a psychological defense, and the role of gender socialization, identity, and adaptation. The conversation also touches on trauma, nervous-system activation, and why building safety usually comes before real change. On this, our 311th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss what is happening in Minneapolis. First: research finds that on average, men and women experience empathy differently: men do not have empathy for people who have done wrong; women have empathy for people regardless of context. Then: Was the Alex Pretti shooting by ICE officers in Minneapolis a cold-blooded murder, or a justified homicide? How would we know? Few of us were actual eye-witnesses to the scene, but our modern media environment tricks us into believing, unconsciously, that we know more than we do. This feels like Portland in 2020. We are being manipulated into disjunct narratives, taught to distrust and fear one another, at ever greater distance from simply being good neighbors and fellow citizens. Top performance coach and author Brad Stulberg joins Forrest to reframe and reclaim excellence. Brad explains how real excellence - involved engagement with something you care about - is the healthy middle path between over-the-top hustle-culture and detached nonchalance. They discuss the current culture of pseudo-excellence, the risks and rewards of caring deeply, how modern life can derail us, and how the real prize is the person you become while trying to reach your goals. Brad shares practical tools to build the habit of excellence: clear aims, micro-milestones, consistency over intensity, constraint-based discipline, and connection. He also explains how yoga adds nearly two hours of sleep by boosting GABAergic activity, while Tai Chi provides sustained benefits for up to two years. Our host details how exercise facilitates the core temperature drop necessary for consciousness to power down. Matt discusses how movement increases brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and turns down the volume on systemic inflammation. In the end, Matt reveals that intentional activity recalibrates the nervous system to help you obtain the best quantity and quality of sleep. Please note that Matt is not a medical doctor, and none of the content in this podcast should be considered medical advice in any way, shape, or form, nor prescriptive in any way.Clean biological living requires precision. It's a controversial topic, fasting, especially for women. Dr. Mindy Pelz was teaching women to fast primarily because they wanted to lose weight, but what she was witnessing was women saying things like, "I lost weight, but my hair's falling out. Matt delves into insomnia, defining it as a persistent struggle to sleep despite having the opportunity. He presents "Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia" (CBTI) as the scientifically validated gold standard, and details the five pillars: stimulus control to rebuild the bed-sleep association, time-in-bed restriction to boost efficiency, sleep hygiene, cognitive restructuring, and relaxation. These strategies retrain the brain to treat the bed as a sanctuary, deactivating the psychological triggers of wakefulness. The episode also addresses the physiological impacts of caffeine, alcohol, and nighttime rumination. Walker contrasts traditional "Z-drugs," which may hinder glymphatic housekeeping, with newer "DORAs" that target the orexin system like a dimmer switch. While discussing tools like Trazodone, he emphasizes that CBTI's aim is to restore the body's innate sleep signals. These evidence-based interventions offer a lasting payoff by aligning behavior with our deep biological needs. Please note that Matt is not a medical doctor, and none of the content in this podcast should be considered medical advice in any way, shape, or form, nor prescriptive in any way.Clean biological living requires precision. This Day in Legal History: Hattie Wyatt Caraway Elected to SenateOn January 12, 1932, Hattie Wyatt Caraway of Arkansas became the first woman elected to the United States Senate in her own right, marking a milestone in American legal and political history. Initially appointed to her late husband Thaddeus Caraway's Senate seat, she was widely expected to serve only as a placeholder until a male successor could be elected. Instead, Caraway defied expectations by entering the special election and winning, quietly but firmly asserting her independence. Her victory came just over a decade after the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote and laid the groundwork for their broader participation in political life.Caraway's campaign was bolstered by the support of Louisiana Senator Huey Long, whose populist style and energetic barnstorming helped draw attention to her candidacy. Despite being soft-spoken and reserved on the Senate floor, Caraway developed a reputation for diligence and loyalty to her constituents. She went on to win a full term later that year, becoming the first woman to do so and serving in the Senate until 1945.Her election symbolized a shift in legal and cultural attitudes toward women in government roles. While women had begun entering state legislatures and the House of Representatives, the Senate had remained all-male until Caraway's election. Her success challenged deeply rooted assumptions about women's capacity for leadership and helped open the door for future female senators. She focused much of her legislative work on issues affecting veterans, farmers, and rural communities.U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani announced she would block the Trump administration's attempt to terminate temporary legal status for 10,000 to 12,000 migrants from seven Latin American countries. These individuals had entered the U.S. under family reunification parole programs that allowed them to live legally with relatives while waiting for visa approval. The Department of Homeland Security had moved to cancel the programs, which were launched or updated during the Biden administration, arguing they were being misused to bypass regular immigration protocols.Judge Talwani criticized the government for failing to provide proper legal notice to the affected migrants, many of whom are children, and emphasized that the U.S. must also follow the law. The plaintiffs' attorney called the government's move harmful and disruptive, especially to families and school-aged children. A Justice Department lawyer argued that the administration had the legal authority to revoke parole. The case is part of a broader legal battle over Trump's efforts to dismantle humanitarian parole programs initiated under President Biden, which had provided temporary protection to hundreds of thousands of migrants. Talwani had previously issued rulings blocking similar rollbacks, but higher courts overturned them. Her upcoming order is expected to offer temporary relief to thousands facing imminent deportation.US judge to block Trump move to end thousands of Latin American migrants' legal status | ReutersOn January 10, Indonesia became the first country to temporarily block access to Elon Musk's Grok chatbot, citing concerns over the platform's ability to generate AI-produced pornographic content, including disturbing depictions of minors. The country's Communications and Digital Minister condemned non-consensual sexual deepfakes as serious human rights violations and emphasized the need to protect dignity and digital safety. This action follows growing international criticism of Grok's content safeguards, with some governments in Europe and Asia launching investigations.xAI, the company behind Grok, responded by limiting image generation features to paying users while working to address security flaws that had allowed the creation of sexualized images. However, its public response to Reuters included a dismissive automatic message: “Legacy Media Lies.” Musk, posting on X, insisted users generating illegal content would be held accountable as if they had uploaded it directly.Indonesia's firm stance highlights the absence of similar decisive action from the United States, where Grok and xAI are based—raising questions about America's professed commitment to protecting victims of online abuse. The U.S.'s failure to lead on this issue stands in stark contrast to its claimed leadership in defending digital rights and vulnerable populations.Indonesia temporarily blocks access to Grok over sexualised images | ReutersU.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the government has more than enough funds—nearly $774 billion in cash on hand—to handle any tariff refunds that may result from a potential Supreme Court ruling against President Trump's emergency tariffs. However, Bessent noted that any repayments would be distributed gradually over weeks or even up to a year. He expressed skepticism that the Court would rule against the tariffs, and criticized potential refunds as corporate windfalls, questioning whether companies like Costco, which sued the government, would pass any refunded money back to consumers. While many importers argue that they should be reimbursed if the Court finds Trump's use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) unlawful, Bessent claimed the actual number of refundable tariffs is lower than the estimated $150 billion cited by some trade analysts. He declined to offer a precise figure. He also disputed the idea that Trump's tariffs significantly contributed to inflation, asserting that there was little evidence of cost pass-through to consumers.Bessent warned that if the Supreme Court does rule against the tariffs, the decision could be complex rather than a simple reversal, which might complicate refund logistics. He added that a delay in the ruling increases the odds of a decision favoring Trump. Treasury's projected end-of-quarter balance of $850 billion and an expected reduction in the 2025 calendar-year deficit are seen as bolstering its ability to manage any financial impact.Bessent says US Treasury can easily cover any tariff refunds | ReutersFederal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell revealed that the Fed had been served with grand jury subpoenas by the U.S. Department of Justice, escalating tensions between the central bank and the Trump administration. The subpoenas reportedly relate to Powell's June 2025 congressional testimony about renovations to the Fed's headquarters, but Powell described the move as part of a broader campaign of political intimidation aimed at undermining the Fed's independence. He stated unequivocally that the threat of criminal charges was tied to the Fed's refusal to set interest rates according to presidential preferences.President Trump denied involvement in the DOJ probe, but his administration has long clashed with Powell over interest rate policy and spending. Trump has publicly floated removing Powell and Fed Governor Lisa Cook, whose case is pending before the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, markets reacted to the news with falling stock futures and a surge in gold prices, reflecting investor unease over the attack on central bank autonomy.Republican Senator Thom Tillis condemned the subpoenas, pledging to block any future Fed nominee until the legal matter is resolved. The DOJ's inquiry is reportedly focused on whether Powell misled Congress about ballooning renovation costs, which reached $2.5 billion. Though the administration alleges possible misconduct, critics see the legal threat as part of a pressure campaign to force Powell out ahead of his term's expiration in May.Fed Served With DOJ Subpoenas, Powell Vows to Stand Firm (5) This is a public episode. So much to discuss this week! Amanda is NYC bound and we are sure to have some stories for you after this weekend. We are invested in the Ashley Tisdale mama drama - and of course, we have opinions. A Cocktailer saw Bronwyn's soon-to-be-ex-husband Todd out in NYC on what looked like a date...and sent us pictures, which of course, we shared with you all on the website. The RHOSLC finale was a doozy. Who's lying? Bronwyn or Meredith? Or both? The "playwright" wrote some pretty brutal but insightful words about the ladies. Monica (formerly Reality Von Tease) has been out chirping on social media, seemingly targeting Heather Gay. We have a little Southern Charm tea about a new relationship, and a slight tangent about why everyone seems to target Craig, and is Venita secretly in love with him? And we did it again .... Lisa Hochstein's ex-boyfriend Jodi admitted that they broke up, after we posted about it and talked about it on the podcast last week. On this, our 308th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss glyphosate, Roundup, Monsanto, and how science and the law are done. A benchmark scientific review paper from 2000, which established the safety of glyphosate for humans, has been retracted by the publisher, on the basis that a) the paper did not actually review the available evidence, b) the stated authors did not actually write (much of) the paper, and c) employees of Monsanto, which makes Roundup, cryptically contributed substantively to the paper. This paper never should have been published, and its retraction should prompt the EPA to revamp guidelines for the use of glyphosate. Also: peer review and scientific culture are widely gamed. And: punitive damages to injured plaintiffs, awarded by juries against corporations, are being reduced by appellate courts due to a misapplication of the 14th Amendment.*****Our sponsors:Xlear: Xylitol nasal spray that acts as prophylaxis against respiratory illnesses by reducing the stickiness of bacteria and viruses. On today's episode, I'm sitting down with fashion creator and former Revolve buyer, Sara Walker—better known online as StyledSara—to trace her journey from Seattle college intern to building one of the most trusted fashion voices on Instagram and TikTok. Sara shares how she broke into the fashion industry without traditional experience, the persistence that landed her a role at Revolve during a hiring freeze, and what being a buyer actually means when it comes to curating trends for millions of shoppers. We get into the early days of StyledSara—from posting OOTDs for 30 days straight and gaining 10K followers overnight to realizing her account was becoming a full-time career. Sara also dives into how to build genuine relationships with brands, the winter trends she's loving, her holiday party styling formulas, and where she recommends saving vs. splurging this season. This episode is a must-listen for anyone looking to grow online, break into fashion, or elevate their winter wardrobe. Today we're diving into holiday gifting, the part of the season that somehow feels both magical and mildly panic-inducing. If you've ever found yourself wanting to be thoughtful and generous but also staring at a long list feeling totally overwhelmed… same. This episode is your permission slip to take a breath, simplify, and bring the joy back into giving. I'm sharing the tiny tweaks that have genuinely changed the game for me, starting with reframing gift-giving as a simple expression of gratitude, not a quest for perfection. We'll talk about getting clear instead of chaotic by creating a gift list (my updated printable is linked!), figuring out what kind of shopper and wrapper you actually are, and scheduling shopping so it stops looming over you. You'll hear easy, budget-friendly ideas like favorite drinks, homemade treats, recipe cards, and simple group gifts. Plus, I'm walking you through my go-to “default gift” strategy, the thing that saves my sanity every single December. If you've been craving a calmer, more meaningful gifting season, this episode will help you feel organized, inspired, and maybe even excited again. Grab your coffee and let's make holiday gifting feel manageable, and dare I say, enjoyable. Mentioned in This Episode:

We're officially (or unofficially!) kicking off the holiday season, and what better way to start than with a heart of gratitude? In this episode, I'm joined by Kerry and April, the creative moms and founders behind Turkey on the Table, a simple, hands-on way for families to practice gratitude together all November long. Born out of a preschool parking lot conversation, this sweet idea turned into a nationwide movement helping parents teach their kids to slow down, notice the good, and give thanks in tangible ways. Kerry and April share the inspiring story of how Turkey on the Table came to life, the surprising science behind gratitude, and why small daily habits can make a big impact on our hearts and homes. They also open up about their meaningful partnership with Feeding America, donating over 1.8 million meals to families in need, and the sweetest stories they've heard from homes, classrooms, and even nursing homes using the turkey tradition to spark joy and connection. If you're ready to anchor your family in gratitude and kick off the holidays with more heart, this episode will leave you inspired, grounded, and ready to start your own tradition of thankfulness. The Cookware That's Secretly Poisoning Your Food Not all cookware is created equal. After months of investigating 21 major cookware brands, Dr. Christian Gonzalez uncovered a truth the industry doesn't want you to know: only one passed his strict standards for safety, transparency, and purity. Most companies, including billion-dollar icons like Le Creuset, Caraway, All-Clad, HexClad, and GreenPan - either ignored requests for safety data, relied on toxic PFAs coatings, or hid behind influencer marketing. In this episode, Dr. G exposes which brands are quietly contaminating your food, the dangerous materials to avoid, and how to choose cookware that protects your brain, hormones, and nervous system.
