Arthur Shawcross lived a troubled life. His childhood was terrible, and by the time he was six, he was running away from home. He claimed his mother molested him, and that he had an incestuous relationship with his sister, Jeannie, that lasted for years. In 1969, he went to Vietnam and when he returned, he was a changed man. None of this explains why he killed 13 people, including two children--but the way his life went (if you want to believe what he says) you can't be surprised he turned out to be a psychopath. Watch livestream“Then I took out the knife that I'd taken from her and cut her wide open in a straight line down her chest from, her neck to her asshole. Cut out her pussy and ate it.” — Arthur ShawcrossThanksgiving Day, 1989 — a day known for the warmth of hearths, family gatherings, and grateful hearts, would be forever marred by a chilling discovery in the picturesque expanse of Turning Point Park, Rochester, New York. The park, named for the Genesee River's navigational convenience for small ships, was the site where a hunter's dog, innocently sniffing out an overgrown game trail, alerted its owner to a scene of grotesque horror.Mark Stezel, a local, was walking his hunting mutt that fateful day when the canine led him to an area nestled deep within the park, often used by deer for rest. An oddly placed ice-encrusted carpet with its burlap side up, almost blending with the vegetation, piqued Stezel's curiosity. But the shock of what laid underneath would haunt him for the rest of his life — a bare human foot protruding from a corner. Beneath the carpet lay the decomposing body of a woman, her right leg grotesquely twisted, her skin mottled with a disconcerting gelatinous coating of varying shades of brown and dark red. The horrifying tableau was suggestive of sexual violation, decomposition, and a brutal demise. What made the grisly find more gruesome was the manner of the mutilation; the body... Continue reading.
In 1987, a convicted child killer and rapist was granted early release from prison. What would follow, would rock Rochester, NY to its core as multiple women would go missing and ultimately found dead. Be warned, this story is not for the weak. Homicide Highway is joined this week by Harley Newell telling us the story of Arthur Shawcross. Shawcross was also known as the Genesee River Killer. He was active in New York from 1972-1989. Prior to these crimes he had a line of victims he left in his path that Harley will touch on also. Arthur Shawcross was born on June 6th, 1945 in Kittery, Maine and he would grow up to terrorize the people of Watertown and Rochester, both in New York. Family, neighbors, schoolmates, and anyone else who met him knew he was "different" from an early age. He said odd things, he reacted unnaturally to various situations, he talked to himself, he didn't understand tone, sarcasm, irony, etc. And he was angry. And he was scary when he was angry. Soon, he was torturing and killing small animals and terrifying children and adults alike. He was setting fires, drilling holes in walls to peep on female family members, and telling outlandish tales. And then, shortly after returning home from Vietnam, and after serving prison time for arson, he raped and killed two children in Watertown. In a heavily criticized plea deal, he was back on the streets less than fifteen years later, his criminal records were sealed, and he killed at least eleven women in Rochester in less than two years. This tale is a wild one. And they don't get much darker and weirder than the story of the Genesee River Killer. The Bad Magic Charity of the month is Love Thy Neighbor! Arthur Shawcross was always a little "off." As a boy, he was unsympathetic and violent, exploding with anger at the slightest provocation. When he was older, fighting in the Vietnam War only intensified his aggressive, unpredictable nature. Arthur returned from service traumatized and harrowed by the experience — but that didn't stop him on his hunt for blood. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Usually serial killers have a specific MO, victim type and odd fetish but, Arthur had it all. During this episode we will learn that he raped, tortured, hunted, and practiced necrophila on his victims, as he was known for returning to the corpse. But, he wouldn’t just fulfill his sexual urges. Many times he would cut off the woman’s genitals and eat them.Social Media: @killerjobspodPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/killerjobsMerchandise: https://killerjobspodcast.threadless.com( 100% of all money from the show’s Patreon & merchandise sales are donated to the St. Louis Crisis Nursery, in addition to a monthly donation from advertising revenue. https://www.crisisnurserykids.org )
What happens when one of the most evil men in the history of America meets a man he trusts to share his darkest secrets with? How does it affect someone already on the edge of society when he is taken under the wing of a serial killer? Partly told through the letters of Arthur Shawcross, THE SHAWCROSS LETTERS is the tale of one of America’s most notorious serial killers and his relationship with his would-be biographer, John Paul Fay. John Paul Fay was a murderabilia dealer with a troubled past. Arthur Shawcross, also known as the Genesee River Killer, was in prison after being convicted of murdering numerous women, he officially has killed 14 people in all. The two created a business relationship, with Fay shopping the drawings of Shawcross and working with him on a book of his life. They also created a bizarre friendship in which Shawcross would let out his darkest secrets and Fay would finally meet someone that he himself felt oddly at home with. But as we all know, be careful what you wish for, you just might get it. THE SHAWCROSS LETTERS is a unique book, it is not only literary, but it lets the reader into the mind of a serial killer in a way that few books have ever done before. The reader will be drawn into the mind of Shawcross through his letters, and will find themselves wondering, what actually separates a serial killer from someone that walks among us every day? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/burl-barer/support

Arthur Shawcross was an American serial killer who was given the moniker of "The Genesee River Killer" among many others. The stories that he would tell would be so fantastic that it is hard to separate fact from fiction. What we do know, though, is that the murders that Shawcross committed rank up there with some of the most horrific ever on record. Shawcross had two different chapters in his life. He was incarcerated in the early 1970s for committing some very brutal murders. Somehow he was paroled in the 1980s which allowed him to embark on another murder spree. In this first episode of Arthur Shawcross, Mike and Gibby talk about Arthur's early formative years and how they may have influenced his murderous ways. They will focus on the details of the murders he committed in his first "chapter", his eventual capture, and how the system allowed this brutal human being back out on the streets again.
