John Zeman got his first German Shorthair in 1978 and has had various types of bird dogs ever since. Through mentors he found field trials and training methods which he now shares with many who show up at his home on Wednesday nights for training. He still runs and judges field trials across the upper midwest and is also the current president of the Minnesota Federation of Field Trial Clubs. He, and a special committee have been instrumental in working with the Minnesota DNR to offer dog training opportunities at the newly acquired Keystone Woods WMA property. Gina Deem was a nursing student in Bozeman, Montana when she adopted her first hunting dog in 2014. At the time, she wasn't a hunter, but her then-boyfriend was. “He said, ‘If we're going to get a dog, we're going to get a bird dog. And that bird dog's going to be a German Shorthair,'” she recalls. Aware of how many dogs were in shelters, Deem wanted to adopt a bird dog. Deem and her partner didn't have the funds to put down a deposit with a reputable GSP breeder. Plus, she figured they'd be able to find a GSP up for adoption. She was right. Within days, she and her then-boyfriend picked up a Shorthair named Boone from a small shelter near Sand Point, Idaho. He had been surrendered after his former owner's health declined. That fall, Deem took Boone hunting and watched him point his first rooster pheasant. Deem was hooked and soon developed a deep passion for bird dogs and upland hunting. After adopting several more GSPs and observing how many popped up at shelters in her region, she started Paws to Peak Rescue in 2018. Since then, she's rehomed over 130 bird dogs in Montana, Idaho, Utah, and beyond.
Tamara Champagne is a working dog trainer who has fallen in love with sporting dogs. She recently began the journey with a German Shorthair and now is qualified for next year's NAVHDA Invitational. Tamara and Mike sat down at this year's Invite to share how she got into bird dogs, crossover between working dogs and sporting dogs, maintaining attitude and confidence in dogs, and so much more. Tamara is a wealth of knowledge and will certainly be a repeat guest. This episode is brought to you by Ugly Dog Hunting Co. Here at Christian Outdoors we like to talk about a lot of different subjects and today is no different. Today we have with us Pastor Gavin Roberts of Utah and his passion is hunting upland birds of the west. For those of us who live in the east, that includes birds such as pheasants, spruce grouse, ruffed grouse, valley quail, gambrels quail, California quail and chucker. THis variety of game birds allows Gavin to travel all through the west chasing different birds in a variety of terrain with his German Shorthair dogs. We also learn of his ministry in northern Utah. www.taurususa.com www.cva.com www.birddogcoffeebeans.com www.himtnjerky.com www.citrusafe.com www.elimishieldhunt.com www.nukemhunting.com www.christianoutdoors.org
Your diaphragm is involved in breathing, but did you know it's also involved in digestion? Everyone has a different definition of success, failure, happiness, sadness, and even for love and hatred, etc. We often get into conversations with others and tend to prove that we are better off than them. We try to fit ourselves or our kids into their definitions, without knowing their story or considering our own. Everyone has a life filled with different situations of opportunities and failures, people evolve with these situations. We must avoid such comparisons as these result in undue social pressure and anxiety. Moreover, this is not good for kids as then they feel under pressure.Take examples - if I'm talking about dogs. I might be in turn talking about German Shorthair. You might be talking about a German Shepherd. So, things are different for different people. For someone success could be to earn a two-time meal and have some savings; for someone else, it could be to have a luxurious life. Do not get lured and try to fit your own self or feel demotivated when you don't succeed as per their definition.Your story is different. https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cn6MGDvDukt/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== #autism #autistic #actuallyautistic #neurodiversity #neurodiverse #neurodivergent #autismpride #asd #pride #loveislove #autismawareness #autismacceptance #forabettertomorrow #autismadvocate #spectrum_inspired #specialneeds #staystrong #thanks #life #optionsoflife #lifechoices #choices #working #patience #success #failure #happiness #love #story

Daren Bulow of Casper, Wyoming joins me today to discuss how he has taken his comedy business and turned it into a way to help nonprofit companies and businesses. By managing his performances to generate funds for struggling nonprofits, he has built a reputation in the west. Daren is also a passionate upland bird hunter and follows his German Shorthair pointers through the prairie of Wyoming chasing grouse, pheasants, chuckers and Hungarian partridge.
Vince Falasca joins me to talk Bracco's, but we really go down a few rabbit holes. growing up in Italy, Vince fell in love with the German Shorthair. After emigrating to the US he was on a search for a bird dog that reminded him of his youth. We have some similar feelings about hunting, training and what we have done here in the USA with our dogs. This is a conversation, not the gospel! We talk testing, judging, and a few other subjects that we might be biased on. enjoy and listen close....

What is domestication? The domestic dog dates back tens of thousands of years. However, there are no wild golden retrievers or Doberman Pinscher packs roaming the forests...so how did we get the German Shorthair pointer and Labrador Retriever from a Wolf or Coyote? The debate is still in the air today. Join us with special guest and personal friend of mine, Dr. Christos Suriano, to help us gain knowledge on past and current research and to discuss our own personal theories toward this discovery.
11-21-17 We will have a mead celebrity on with this tonight! Peter Bakulic will be coming on the show to talk mead with us. Pete was introduced to winemaking at an early age as part of his family's Croatian roots in winemaking. He traveled to Lodi, California to visit family friends who were Zinfandel winegrowers and became familiar with the winemaking process. He became interested in making mead in the late seventies about the same time he was learning about brewing. After his first taste of mead Pete was hooked and took to mead making with a passion. Having majored in microbiology and minored in chemistry he was always interested in the role of yeast during fermentation and how it affects the mead, wine and beer making process, and also worked as a clinical laboratory technologist. Pete is an active judge in local mead, wine and beer competitions and has been on several different sensory panels responsible for recommending wine and spirits for corporate and private collections in downtown Los Angeles. He presents meadmaking classes to local Home Brew Clubs and Bee Keepers who are interested in learning about the process of making mead, and how to evaluate and taste mead. Pete performs sensory evaluation of commercially produced mead on a contract basis for meaderies around the world. In several cases his recommendations have lead to improvements that have garnered medals in various international mead competitions. He is the current President of the Mazer Cup International Mead Competition which is the lar gest mead only competition in the world. Pete also founded the Home Meadmaker competition at the International Mead Festival in 2006 along with David Myers and Julia Herz of Redstone Meadery. He has worked closely as an administrative partner with Vicky Rowe on GotMead.Com since 2004, where he is known as Oskaar. Pete worked with Ken Schramm, Gordon Strong, Julia Herz and other members of the BJCP (Beer Judge Certification Program) to define the guidelines for the current Mead Judge Certification Program and contributed articles for inclusion in the course study guide. He is also a regular presenter in the Mead Courses offered by the Honey and Pollination Center at the Robert Mondavi Institute on the U.C. Davis Campus. Pete lives in Orange County, Southern California with his oft sober hunting partner a German Shorthair named Raalphe. Join us for GotMead Live Chat, on Skype, live during the broadcast!!
