Welcome back to the NoCo Pulse as we navigate the whirlwind that is May in Northern Colorado. Someone at soccer described it perfectly: "How's your May December going?" That busy energy perfectly captures this week's packed episode of community news, business updates, and local highlights. What's moving features Miles Beyond Running Community gearing up for their Weld Your Metal Running Festival on May 30th and 31st in Eaton, offering everything from a 7K run walk to ultra distance events complete with saunas, glamping, and mountain views. Following that is the Red White and Brew race on July 20th in Water Valley, closing at the Grainry at the Raynets, and the Greeley Freedom 5K downtown on July 4th. Bass Pro Shops is moving into their massive new 130,000 square foot location at the Brands at the Ranch, an 18 acre development that adds to NoCo's already impressive outdoor retail scene including Scheels, Jax locations, and Sportsman's Warehouse. Joyride is looking to move into NoCo as a bike cafe combining bike repair services with a coffee shop and cafe, founded by Rebe of Rebe Explores and focused on creating inclusive outdoor spaces for everyone from beginners to experts. Community gatherings spotlight Ginger and Baker's eighth annual Dog Flower Crown Photo Day on May 31st, a free event where you can bring your four legged friends for flower crowns and portraits with donations collected for Animal Friends Alliance. The Blues and Cruise car show comes to downtown Loveland May 30th from 10 to 3 featuring classic cars and electric guitars, not to be confused with the Blues and Brews festival on June 5th. Local musician Aubrey Dale releases her debut album Fireweed on May 24th at the Rング for just $29 including a free beverage, sponsored by Greeley Hat Works. Keeping the beat features the fifth annual A Brothers Fountain ABF at the Farm event on June 6th below Devil's Backbone in Loveland, with $30 suggested donation and 10% of proceeds benefiting Loveland Community Kitchen. The Global Sounds Music Festival returns to Old Town Fort Collins on May 30th, a free festival from noon to 6 PM on the big stage bringing music from around the world, presented by the Bohemian Foundation. Dancers from the suddenly closed Canyon Concert Ballet have partnered with Bas Bleu Theatre to present their Swan Song final performance May 22nd through 24th after raising funds to rent the space and pay the dancers. Community support highlights Breeze Thru Car Wash's fundraising program where organizations can raise money the second full weekend of every month through October 31st, with Breeze Thru matching dollar for dollar every donation made at their pay stations. The Boys and Girls Club of Larimer County celebrates 40 years with their Great Futures Gala on May 30th at the Lory Student Center Ballroom, featuring cocktail attire, complimentary drinks, elegant dinner, live auction, and recognition of youth and champions for children. Business news celebrates Verbal Bras, founded by Rebecca Thompson, a New Belgium senior executive assistant who created bras that support wearable breast pumps, saving working moms up to 30 minutes daily. The product has a utility patent and just started shipping this spring after Rebecca discovered the challenges three years ago when she had her daughter. Food picks feature Aloha Poke and Boba on College Avenue near Noodles and Chipotle, serving delicious poke bowls with exceptional service that even got the kids involved and eating. Friendly Nick's Butcher on Lemay Avenue offers the best quality meats from local sustainable farms, amazing house made beef jerky, Nick's Sticks, dog bones, stock, and fresh beef liver, plus they do incredible community work from fundraisers to food baskets to hosting art contests for kids. In this episode of The TechEd Podcast, host Matt Kirchner sits down with Irv Blumkin, Chairman of Nebraska Furniture Mart (NFM), and Ryan Blumkin, Executive Vice President, to unpack nearly 90 years of retail innovation, from Mrs. B's pawn-shop beginnings to multi-acre campuses in Omaha, Kansas City, Dallas, and soon Austin. They explore what it's like to partner with Warren Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway, build massive destination developments, and still obsess over every single SKU and customer interaction. From dynamic pricing and AI-enabled operations to a mind-blowing learning trip through China's retail and technology ecosystem, Irv and Ryan share how NFM is using data, automation, and emerging tech to deepen their moat, without ever losing sight of values, culture, and long-term thinking. They also talk careers in retail tech, why young “outside-the-box” thinkers matter, and the role of lifelong learning in leading through disruption. Listen to learn:Why Warren Buffett bought Nebraska Furniture Mart on a handshake, and what Irv has learned from decades of dinners and deal-making with himWhy strong values and culture matter more than ever in this tech-driven marketplaceHow NFM uses massive-store footprints, destination partners like Scheels, and even hotel/convention centers to turn shopping into an experienceHow dynamic pricing, digital shelf tags, and nightly web crawls of 70,000+ SKUs keep NFM competitive with Amazon, Costco, Wayfair, and othersWhat Irv and Ryan saw in China's tech companies and how those lessons are shaping NFM's future3 Big Takeaways from this Episode:1. Timeless values can scale into a $2 billion business. Mrs. B's simple principles (sell at a great price, tell the truth, and pay your bills) still anchor NFM's strategy, even as the company builds 1.8 million-square-foot campuses and expands into new markets like Austin. Irv connects those values directly to long-term growth, customer trust, and the family's partnership with Berkshire Hathaway. 2. Technology is now core infrastructure, not an add-on. NFM's nightly web crawling, digital price tags, and dynamic pricing systems automatically position them as the best value against online competitors, while complex distribution networks and emerging AI tools optimize inventory and logistics. Ryan frames this as building a “moat” with data, automation, and relentless operational excellence, not just more advertising. 3. Lifelong learning is mandatory for modern leadership. Irv has invested in executive education for decades, and both he and Ryan describe their China trip as “eye opening” in terms of speed, scrappiness, AI adoption, and asset-light business models. They're already translating those lessons into new e-commerce strategies, warehouse automation concepts, and AI-enabled process improvements back at NFM. Double Tap Episode 403 This episode of Double Tap is brought to you by: Brownells, Gideon Optics, Blue Alpha, Medical Gear Outfitters, Mitchell Defense, and Matador Arms Welcome to Double Tap, episode 403! Your hosts tonight are Jeremy Pozderac, Aaron Krieger, Nick Lynch, and me Shawn Herrin, welcome to the show! Double Tap- Need more questions. WLS- Need more reviews. - Dear WLS My dad hit my mom so I the family dog and now I have a hard time talking to women S. - Do you guys have a go to cleaning kit? Or do you just buy pieces and make your own kit? What are those pieces? I've bought several kits but they never seem to be ideal for cleaning any particular gun. Ice Wallocum - Could 50 clones of Savage defeat Nick, Jeremy, Shawn, and Aaron? The only weapons available to the guys are a frying pan, a set of brass knuckles, a fire extinguisher and a large flat-head screwdriver. Each clone is butt-ass naked. Try to not get a boner. No notes. Jakey Poo - I'm getting the itch... not like yours, Aaron. I need to add something to my gun collection. My current selection is as follows. A 223 AR A 223 AK A semi auto 12 gauge (yes Turkish, shut up) A 9mm AK A 45 1911 A full size 9mm canik. A 9mm p365 xmacro. An m&p 22 handgun. A 22 heritage rough rider. So, where should I start looking and or saving next? I like the idea of a 45 pcc. I like the idea of a lever action. I like the idea of some other 22 to have for when my boys get old enough. I just don't know what to do. And don't say tons of ammo for all those things... that's already on the list. Thank you for all the feelings you give me every week, my fellow homeo sectionals. Alex W - Hi. Do you guys have slings on your home defense rifles? I had mine out last night due to sketchy shit going on outside my home and noticed the sling was all twisted up and wrapped around the stock. I think it would have still functioned fine but throwing the sling on might have been hard in a tense situation. How do you stow your slings to prevent that issue? Thanks. No notes. Savage Looks Like A Nutsack - I was at my local Scheels, and overheard a conversation about second focal plane scopes. The sales associate told the guy next to me that in a sfp scope, only the subtensions will be off if you use magnification. He explained that your center aimpoint on the scope will always be dead on no matter what, as long as the distance is ranged correctly. What's the associate right? I thought in all sfp scopes, your zero would be off on everything if you used the magnification. It doesn't make sense that the center point of the scope would always be correct under any magnification, but only the subtensions would be off. No notes Reese K - On the most recent This Week in Guns they talked about a blind man who bought a gun and then was complaining about how easy it was. If you guys became legally blind, from whatever terrible accident you want, what would you choose for home defense? Cory R - Why is Aaron such a douche. Dude is fucking up the show arguing about the dumbest shit. Arguing that ffls shouldn't be able to charge for transfers? Fucking dumbass. Then today argue with savage for not reading the facts right after he did. Jesus, please take his mic before I have to quit listening. DoppleBanger - Looking to buy a battle rifle clone from the 50s-60s era in .308. Price doesn't matter. What are your suggestions? M14 Clone? G3 clone? Fal? The winner of this week's swag pack is Ice Wallocum! To win your own, go to welikeshooting.com/dashboard and submit a question!
