The Mille Miglia - a daring, 1,000-mile race across Italy - was first held on March 26th, 1927. Using ordinary dirt roads as the racetrack, competitors tore through cities, mountains, and countryside at unprecedented, breakneck speeds. Townspeople lined the streets, waving flags and throwing flowers, as glamorous Bugattis and Alfa Romeos roared past. The first winners, Nando Minoja and Giuseppe Morandi, completed the course in just over 21 hours, averaging an eye-watering 48 mph. They had to dodge wandering farm animals, slow-moving carts, and clueless pedestrians. But for all its romance, the Mille Miglia had a dark side. The combination of high speeds, unpredictable roads, and massive crowds made it incredibly dangerous. The 1938 race saw a devastating crash near Bologna; and in 1957, two separate fatal crashes, including one involving dashing aristocrat Alfonso de Portago, that finally brought an end to the competition in its original form. The event had experienced 56 deaths over its 24-race history. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly reveal how having a skilled navigator/mechanic was just as important as having a fast car; discover the methods ultimate champion Sir Stirling Moss used to win the race in just over 10 hours in 1955; and explain how spectators can still taste the golden age of this iconic race, even in the 21st century… Further Reading: • ‘The first 1000 Miglia in 1927 – The history of the 1000 Miglia' (1000 Miglia Official Website): https://1000miglia.it/en/history-of-1000-miglia/1927-the-first-1000-miglia/ • ‘No seatbelts, 170mph: days of death and dynamism' (The Times, 2015): https://www.thetimes.com/article/f0b41044-bb1c-4694-afc9-947ace151afc • ‘Bracco vince la Mille Miglia' (Archivio Luce Cinecittà, 1952): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V59ZbkF5J40 #Italy #Motoring #20s #Sport Love the show? In this episode of the "How to Protect the Ocean" podcast, host Andrew Lewin interviews Dr. Annalisa Bracco, a professor at Georgia Tech specializing in ocean and climate dynamics. The discussion centers around innovative climate solutions, moving away from the typical focus on the negative impacts of climate change. Key Climate Solutions Discussed: Sargassum Management: Problem: Since 2011, there have been significant blooms of sargassum in the tropical Atlantic, impacting beaches in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. These blooms require costly cleanup efforts, amounting to approximately $300 million per year. Solutions: Sinking Sargassum: Research is being conducted to explore the feasibility of sinking sargassum to sequester carbon. This involves understanding the ecological impacts and ensuring that the carbon captured is not released back into the atmosphere. Biofuel Production: Collaborations with engineers and biologists are underway to convert sargassum into biofuels. One approach involves using black fly larvae, which can efficiently consume sargassum and accumulate lipids for biofuel extraction. Bricks from Sargassum: A small business in Mexico is creating bricks from dried sargassum, which are reported to be more resilient to storms than traditional building materials. Coral Reef Connectivity: Dr. Bracco's team is using machine learning to study the connectivity among coral reefs, which is crucial for understanding how larvae disperse and how healthy ecosystems can support one another. The research highlights the dynamic nature of coral ecosystems, particularly in the Pacific, where certain areas can recover from bleaching events due to the exchange of larvae. In contrast, the Atlantic faces challenges due to pollution and overfishing, which hinder recovery. Interdisciplinary Collaboration: The episode emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary work in addressing climate issues. Dr. Bracco collaborates with experts from various fields, including biology, engineering, and computer science, to develop comprehensive solutions to climate challenges. Overall, the episode provides a hopeful perspective on climate solutions, showcasing innovative approaches to managing ocean health and addressing the impacts of climate change. CTL Script/ Top Stories of August 10th Publish Date: August 10th From the Ingles Studio Welcome to the Award-Winning Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast Today is Saturday, August 10th and Happy 66th Birthday to actor Antonio Banderas. ***08.10.24 – BIRTHDAY – ANTONIO BANDERAS*** I'm Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cherokee is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Holly Springs Considering Increasing Property Taxes Cherokee County Approves Coroner Pay Raise Here's What's Next for the Ga. 140 and Univeter Road Intersection Project We'll have all this and more coming up on the Cherokee Tribune-Ledger Podcast, and if you're looking for Community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! Commercial: CU of GA STORY 1: Holly Springs Considering Increasing Property Taxes Holly Springs is considering raising its millage rate from 3.841 to 4 mills, potentially increasing property taxes by 4.85% over the rollback rate. The proposed rate would generate $4.36 million in revenue, $201,536 more than at the rollback rate. This would increase taxes by $36.08 for an average home and $5.74 for homes with senior tax exemptions. Concerns about the increase include the city's financial health and inflation impacts. Public hearings are scheduled for Aug. 19 at 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. at the Holly Springs Public Safety Building. The council is expected to adopt the budget in November. STORY 2: Cherokee County Approves Coroner Pay Raise Cherokee County's coroner, Sally Sims, will receive a pay raise to $90,000 annually, starting Oct. 1. This increase from her current $60,000 base salary, plus fees, aligns her compensation with similar positions in surrounding counties. The salary will not be reduced during her term unless adjusted by state law. In addition to the base salary, Sims will continue receiving per-investigation fees set by state law. The raise brings her salary closer to those in comparable counties and ensures she receives annual cost-of-living adjustments and the same benefits as other constitutional officers. STORY 3: Here's What's Next for the Ga. 140 and Univeter Road Intersection Project Cherokee County is advancing its Highway 140 at Univeter Road intersection improvement project by approving a non-reimbursable right-of-way contract with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). This contract requires the county to cover the $2,810,000 cost of acquiring the right-of-way without reimbursement. The project will add dual left-turn lanes and widen both roads through the intersection. The county is also seeking an update to the Atlanta Regional Commission's Transportation Improvement Program to potentially secure additional funding. Design work and preliminary plans are underway, with federal funds expected to cover 80% of the project's total cost. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. Back in a moment Break: DRAKE STORY 4: Canton Breaks Ground on Tanner Place Construction has begun on Tanner Place, a new public housing community on Shipp Street in Canton, which will feature 70 units to replace the 39 demolished from an older development. The project, expected to cost around $24 million and complete in 2025, will include 16 one-bedroom, 19 two-bedroom, 28 three-bedroom, and seven four-bedroom units. Funded by Low Income Housing Tax Credits and HUD vouchers, Tanner Place aims to offer affordable housing with amenities such as a laundry room, pavilion, and computer center. This development marks the city's first new public housing in nearly 50 years. STORY 5: Cherokee Leaders Asking for Lower Density at Pearidge Development Cherokee County officials have requested that Pearidge Land Investments reduce the density of their proposed mixed-use development in the Pearidge community. The plan includes 196 single-family homes, 32 townhomes, and commercial space on 70.72 acres. The county wants the density reduced from 3-4 units per acre to 2-3 units per acre. The Canton City Council has postponed a public hearing to October 3 to allow time for revisions and public input. The development will require annexing 62.66 acres into the city and rezoning from residential and institutional to mixed-use. Improvements to access roads and emergency entrances are also under discussion. Commercial: INGLES 8 STORY 6: Bracco Leaves Sequoyah to Join College Staff Sequoyah boys basketball coach Scott Bracco is leaving after one season to become an assistant coach at Stetson University. Bracco led Sequoyah to an 18-11 record and a state playoff berth. With 25 years of coaching experience, including two state championships and multiple awards, Bracco is excited to work with Stetson's respected coach Donnie Jones. Stetson, which won the ASUN Conference championship last season, is looking to continue its success. Sequoyah has promoted Mike Saxton, Bracco's assistant, to head coach, who will lead the team with key players like Brendan Tousignaut returning. STORY 7: Cherokee Fire Department Celebrates Recent Explorer Graduate Madison Hall, a recent graduate of the Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services Fire Explorer program, is set to advance in fire protection. She will start at Eastern Kentucky University this fall, majoring in Fire Protection Administration with a minor in Arson and Explosion Investigation. Over the summer, Hall gained hands-on experience with fire investigations alongside Division Chief Cheri Collett and earned a scholarship to the Georgia Fire Investigators Southeastern Training Conference, where she was recognized by the Georgia Fire Investigators Association. The Cherokee County Fire Department commended Hall's achievements and looks forward to her future contributions in firefighting. We'll have closing comments after this. Polarean Imaging PLC CEO Christopher von Jako takes Proactive's Stephen Gunnion through the company's recent advancements and future plans. Von Jako shared insights on the oversubscribed financing closed in June, highlighting the support from strategic investors, including NUKEM Isotopes and Bracco. The funds are being allocated to expand the commercial sales team and promote the adoption of Polarean's pulmonary functional Xenon MRI technology. He also discussed the recent upgrades at the University of Virginia Health Hospital and the University of Kansas Medical Center, moving from research to clinical-grade polarizers. This follows similar upgrades at Cincinnati Children's Hospital and the University of Alabama, Birmingham. These upgrades are expected to drive wider adoption of Polarean's technology. Additionally, von Jako announced the submission of an NDA supplement to the FDA to lower the age for XENOVIEW administration to six years old. This milestone could significantly expand the US market, particularly in pediatric pulmonary care, as Polarean's technology avoids ionizing radiation. Looking ahead, Polarean remains focused on executing its five-pillar strategy for 2024, with continued growth and expansion of the commercial team to meet set targets. On a sunny day on the fall of 1990, I was aboard a train traveling through the beautiful countryside of northern Italy. As I watched the rich, green valley of the Po River pass by my window, I was reminded of an area where I hunt ruffed grouse near my home in Manitoba. I couldn't help wondering what kind of game could be hiding in the root crops and corn. During one of the many unscheduled train stops in the middle of nowhere, for unknown reasons, I noticed a man walking in the field about 200 meters from the track. He was carrying what I assumed to be a shotgun and appeared to be following a hedgerow that angled toward us. Un cacciatore, I thought, a hunter!? As I pressed my nose against the window to get a better look, I could see that the hunter was not alone; he had a dog. It was fairly large, had an orange and white coat, and was about 50 meters to the hunter's left, trotting along the other side of the hedgerow.

Woodstock football standout Tyler Douthit was seriously injured in a four-story fall from a parking deck in Athens over a week ago. On Friday morning, however, Douthit's mother, Melissa, shared on Facebook that her son was home and expected to make a full recovery. “Less than one week ago our world was turned upside down,” she said. “(Friday), our family is blessed beyond measure to share that Tyler is home and is expected to make a complete recovery.” Douthit, a senior offensive lineman who is signed to play at Samford, was placed in the intensive care unit at Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center. According to police, the fall took place at a parking deck on West Washington Street in Athens, just north of the University of Georgia campus. An officer responded to the location at 2:40 a.m. Sunday morning and found Douthit lying near the entrance to the parking deck. According to reports, a witness said they were driving by the parking garage when they saw Douthit fall from the fourth level of the parking deck. A security officer told police there was another person with Douthit in the parking deck shortly before the fall, but there is no evidence of foul play. Spinone Italiano: Storied Bird Dogs of Gentle Character Long time breeder Allison Schultz, of del Caos Spinoni, joins host Laura Reeves for a Love the Breeds month discussion of the fascinating history and empathetic nature of the Spinone Italiano. [caption id="attachment_10948" align="alignleft" width="264"] Allison Shultz' "Limbo," shown by Nancy Martin, the breed's first Best in Show record holder, with five lifetime BIS awards.[/caption] Schultz acquired her first Spinone in the early 1990s, long before they were officially recognized by the American Kennel Club. The breed dates back thousands of years in Italy, to when birds were hunted with nets. “(It) probably started 2,500 years ago. Long before there was a gun, there was a hunting dog in Italy. They were known as the pointing griffon, rough coat griffon, because they have a wire coat. “Interestingly enough, when you go to Italy and you go to some of the palaces as a tourist, you'll see the Bracco in the mosaics and in the paintings, because they were the dogs of the Lords. The Spinone was really the dog of the peasant. [caption id="attachment_10949" align="alignright" width="270"] Spinoni move quietly through even the toughest cover.[/caption] “When they first started hunting, it was either maybe slingshots, but mostly nets. So, they had to be really quiet in the field. (The dogs) had to be intuitive because you couldn't yell at them because the birds would fly away. So, they really became very close working, silent hunters. “They work at a trot so that the human can keep up. They're not one to bolt a half a mile away looking for a bird because it's so ingrained into them and so intrinsic that they had to hunt close (so) the hunters could throw nets over the flocks of birds. [caption id="attachment_10945" align="alignleft" width="312"] Ch. Elettra del Subasio showing correct coat and skin.[/caption] “They developed a really thick skin, which is really, really important to the breed. And the thick skin is as thick as a cow. It's called the skin of the bull in Italy. And the name Spinoni means thorn. They can go through any kind of cover without even noticing it. “They have this ability to move quite silently through even the hardest cover, and even though they could break through easily. They just don't do that. They're very, I hate to say, careful because that implies slow, but they're very, very careful about how they move. “And the other thing they did is that they naturally flush. So, they point and let the human being know where the birds are. Then if the net gets thrown or they throw the net up in the air, Spinoni will then flush the bird into the nets. That's how they provided food long before there were guns and bows and arrows or anything, actually. [caption id="attachment_10950" align="alignright" width="283"] The gentle, empathetic character of the Spinone is paramount.[/caption] “The first thing in the original standard, which the Italians still hold today, is they must be of the sweet temperament. So that means in 1,500 years of record keeping there was never a bite in Italy from a Spinone. One of the reasons their temperament must be so sweet is that they have to live with other dogs. Because the Italians usually had https://www.akc.org/dog-breeds/segugio-italiano/ (Segugios) to hunt and take care of the rats and the vineyards and the gardens, and that's what they depended on for living. "So, the Spinoni had to be a dog that got along well with other dogs, always. But the first thing in that standard is character. And the most important thing about Spinoni is the character has to be sweet. Dolce, they call it, gentle character. That's very, very, very important. “And a little interesting point about World War Two, in the Italian resistance, which one of my mentors was in... They used the Spinoni when they went on things because the Spinoni could tell the difference between Italians coming to meet them and...
