Gina Deem was a nursing student in Bozeman, Montana when she adopted her first hunting dog in 2014. At the time, she wasn't a hunter, but her then-boyfriend was. “He said, ‘If we're going to get a dog, we're going to get a bird dog. And that bird dog's going to be a German Shorthair,'” she recalls. Aware of how many dogs were in shelters, Deem wanted to adopt a bird dog. Deem and her partner didn't have the funds to put down a deposit with a reputable GSP breeder. Plus, she figured they'd be able to find a GSP up for adoption. She was right. Within days, she and her then-boyfriend picked up a Shorthair named Boone from a small shelter near Sand Point, Idaho. He had been surrendered after his former owner's health declined. That fall, Deem took Boone hunting and watched him point his first rooster pheasant. Deem was hooked and soon developed a deep passion for bird dogs and upland hunting. After adopting several more GSPs and observing how many popped up at shelters in her region, she started Paws to Peak Rescue in 2018. Since then, she's rehomed over 130 bird dogs in Montana, Idaho, Utah, and beyond.

Is she being unreasonable, or is her concern valid?Some callers agree with the mother-to-be, stating that a dog, especially a breed like a staffy, poses a potential risk around a newborn. They argue that no matter how well-trained the dog is, you can never fully trust an animal in such a delicate situation. Rehoming the dog may be a difficult decision, but prioritising the baby's safety should come first.Other callers feel that with the right preparation, there's no need to rehome the dog. They believe it's all about proper training, supervision, and setting clear boundaries for the dog. Staffies are known to be loving and loyal, and there's no reason they can't coexist peacefully with a baby if handled responsibly. They argue that the dog is part of the family, and rehoming the pet out of fear would be unnecessary and traumatic for both the dog and the owners.

Episode 44: Recorded June 5, 2024 "People have jumped to the [conclusion] that, because tracks are closed in the United States, there's no more Greyhounds..." Debra Hardman, of GALT-Arizona, describing the state of affairs for Greyhound adoption applications Show Notes Former racing Greyhounds are still available to adopt in the United States. However, those Greyhounds will likely be sourced from outside the United States. Adoption organizations that partner with groups like Greyhound Racing Ireland / the Irish Retired Greyhound Trust, Greyhound Racing New South Wales (GRNSW) and Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) have effectively resuscitated their programs. These organizations' leaders, including Bob Koch of Nittany Greyhounds and Debra Hardman of GALT-Arizona, are navigating the ins and outs of rehoming these overseas hounds. Bob's adoption group in central Pennsylvania serves adopters regionally -- basically the mid-Atlantic and Midwest. At any given time, he has about 50 approved adoption applications. Nittany works with two organizations in Australia -- and GRV and GRNSW -- but they started international rehoming with Irish racing Greyhounds. According to Bob, the Greyhounds handle the long travel very well and share the same temperament as American racing Greyhounds. Debra's experience in the American Southwest is very similar to that of Bob's organization. GALT-Arizona -- a chapter of the Greyhound Adoption League of Texas (GALT) -- serves Arizona and surrounding states. Her Australian Greyhounds come directly into LAX for pickup, and she describes the hounds as happy as ever as they finish their long journeys after transport. In this episode, host John Parker talks with Bob and Debra about these and other experiences rehoming international Greyhounds with American adopters. They discuss the logistics of bringing the Greyhounds into various ports of entry, the paperwork involved and the care given to the hounds as they make their way around the world. Welcome Jim Keller, the owner of Homeward Pet: a no kill shelter located outside Seattle that focuses on pet adoption, behavioral therapy, fostering and charity. This organization is run by Jim and his wife. Both of whom left their long term careers, took massive pay cuts, to devote their lives to helping animals in need. In 1990, Homeward Pet was founded on the belief that every adoptable animal would eventually find a safe, caring home. "Euthanasia was – and continues to be – used only as a last resort to ease suffering from injury or illness. With this commitment to providing homeless animals without the pressure of a euthanasia deadline, we started small: just 350 cats and 20 dogs adopted this first year, many from foster homes." They have grown to adopt out nearly 2000 animals each year to their community, reduce animal surrender and have over 400 volunteers. We call these individuals Upstanders. His family has a background in Greyhound racing, and he previously managed one of Australia's racing clubs for 3-4 years. Tina's journey in rehoming former racing Greyhounds started in Ontario in 2003 with her first Greyhound adoption. She attended a conference to learn about Irish Greyhound racing, evoking an epiphany about where Canadian Greyhound adoption should be moving. She partnered with Greyhound Racing Ireland (GRI) and the Irish Retired Greyhound Trust (IRGT) to bring Irish Greyhounds to Canada, setting up FLIGHTS (Finding Loving International Greyhounds Homes Together & Salukis). In 2023, FLIGHTS expanded its mission to include former Australian racing Greyhounds. Rory Goreé, a former president of Greyhounds As Pets - National (GPA), recognized the long-term need to find adoptable Greyhounds as the passage of Florida's Amendment 13 impacted track operations and breeding numbers in the United States. The general public in the U.S. perceived the closure of Florida's tracks to mark the end of adoptable Greyhound availability. Rory partnered with Irish and Australian Greyhound adoption groups to welcome a new source of dogs for eager adopters in the U.S. In this episode, John sits down with these pioneers of international Greyhound adoption to talk about their efforts and the outcomes of the programs to date. Sean shares details about GAP and the impact it's having on Australian Greyhound adoption. Rob Macaulay on Broken Hill, one of the 30 community run Greyhound tracks in New South Wales Show Notes Rob Macaulay served as legal counsel for Greyhound Racing New South Wales (NSW) four years ago and immediately immersed himself in the sport of Australian Greyhound racing. When the opportunity presented itself, he applied to serve as Greyhound Racing NSW's Chief Executive Officer. As CEO, Rob leads the organization's racing and welfare initiatives in Australia's largest and most southwest state. The Australian track system will, at first glance, appear very different from the American system. Tracks under Greyhound Racing NSW's umbrella of leadership are community clubs, similar to English football clubs. Rob speaks of the smallest and most remote tracks like the Broken Hill Greyhound Club in the same breath as the largest Greyhound racing tracks in Sydney. One gets the sense that there is a sense of community pride within this Australian Greyhound racing system. Rob is very eager to share Australian racing Greyhounds with the world when they retire. Similar to the Irish Retired Greyhound Trust association with Greyhound Pets of America, Greyhound Racing NSW is piloting a similar adoption program for potential American Greyhound adopters. In 2023, Rob has a goal to introduce 120 Australian Greyhounds into the enthusiastic and welcoming arms of American adopters. In this episode, John and Rob sit down to discuss the Australian racing Greyhound and the sport's present and future. The conversation covers the community centric track system in New South Wales, technical aspects of Australian races and racing surfaces, and the wagering and funding of the sport. Sue is the Executive Director of CANTER PA. CANTER PA is a non-profit organization dedicated to rehoming retiring racehorses through a free listing service offered to race trainers and owners. We strive to create a bridge between the race industry and the sport horse industry to assist in placement of ex-racehorses into quality sport and pleasure homes. As the Amphibian Hobby continues to grow, more and more people are keeping frogs and other amphibians as pets.  However, situations often arise where keepers can no longer keep their animals.  Many keepers look out for rescue organizations, but there are only a handful that accept amphibians.  Running an amphibian focused rescue operation also poses a unique set of challenges. This week I am joined by Cloudberry Exotics Sanctuary and we discuss how she started her rescue operation in 2009 , why she chose to focus on frogs, and what's involved in rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming frogs in need. Elise Mac Adam and Annie first met in 2002 when Annie wrote up Elise's engagement announcement for her column in The New York Observer. Both of them were terrier lovers, writers, and native Manhattanites: They became fast friends. When Annie and Kate first started School For The Dogs in 2011 and running classes out of Annie's Manhattan living room, Elise and her dogs were among their first clients. Elise, her sons, and her husband, have worked with half a dozen of School For The Dogs trainers over the last decade, with three of their dogs. She has, overall, clocked more sessions than any other single client. Eventually, she had to make the difficult decision to rehome one of her terriers. She and Annie discuss how rehoming a dog can feel like both a success and failure at the same time, and the silver lining of this difficult experience: It led her to decide to enroll in the School For The Dogs Professional Course.
