This week begins the search for the next head of the Catholic Church known as the Conclave. Social media has been a buzz as Cardinals all over the world have gathered to begin this sacred ritual to elect the next Pope. During his papacy, Pope Francis took stands on issues like immigration, war and environmental justice. Although he appointed women leaders in the Vatican office, he did not go so far as to allow women to serve as deacons, and priests. As the Catholic church elects a new pope, some women are hoping for expanded roles under the next papacy. Today, we hear what that might look like. What would you like to see from the next Pope? Preaching for the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, Mumbi Kigutha, CPPS offers a reflection on responding to our own "call within the call": "What kind of invitation is God proffering to you as we begin this year? What do you need to leave behind in order to follow Christ? How better can we love God and neighbor? What is the call within the call for each of you? I am convinced the answer lies in a process of the heart, in discernment, so that we may clearly hear God’s call separate from all the naysaying that our brains may distract us with. Just as Jonah, James and John, listened, trusted and responded, may we listen, trust and respond. What ails your heart, and what will soothe it? " Sister Mumbi Kigutha was born and raised in Kenya. She has worked with diverse vulnerable populations including stints with various UN agencies and currently resides on the southside of Chicago orking as a part-time International Consultant for Jesuit Refugee Services under the Reconciliation and Social Cohesion Department. Sr. Mumbi is also a regular contributor to the Horizons column of the Global Sisters Report and was also recently appointed as the organizing secretary of the Pan-African Catholic Theology and Pastoral Network. Sr. Mumbi graduated from CTU with a Master of Arts in Justice Ministry and a Certificate in Pastoral Ministry in addition to her previous MBA in Marketing. Catholics love a good nun story. A chainsaw-wielding sister cleans up after Hurricane Irma? Social media gold. Nuns playing soccer? Yes please. And who can forget Sister Jean? (Not Zac). But every day and on every continent women religious are doing life-saving, cutting-edge work in hospitals, research laboratories, refugee camps and prisons. And those are the stories Dawn Araujo-Hawkins tells as a writer for National Catholic Reporter’s Global Sisters Report. We ask Dawn what she wished more people knew about the work of women religious, especially black sisters, and about her own experience working as a person of color in the mostly white Catholic media world. In Signs of the Times, we bring you the top takeaways from the Vatican’s historic summit on child sexual abuse and discuss the case of Cardinal George Pell, the highest-level church official ever to be convicted of abusing a minor. Next, Pope Francis plans to write an apostolic exhortation on last year’s youth synod. What is an apostolic exhortation and why should we care? And finally, a new poll shows growing support for pro-life positions. You can let us know what you think about our conversation with Dawn or any of our stories in our Facebook group.
