Our guests: "Les Louden, PharmD, MS, Pharmacy Manager St. Joseph's Hospital BayCare Health System, and John B. Hertig, PharmD, MS, CPPS, FASHP, FFIP Founder, Hertig Healthcare Advising, Adjunct Assistant Professor, Purdue University. In this episode, I welcome back Dr. John Hertig along with first-time guest Les Louden from BayCare Health System to discuss their groundbreaking research on controlled substance waste in hospital procedural areas.Their recent study, ""Assessing the Costs of Intravenous Push Waste in Intraoperative Areas Through Observation,"" reveals striking findings about both the financial and operational impact of medication waste. We explore how commonly used medications like fentanyl, hydromorphone, morphine, midazolam, and ketamine are routinely wasted in significant quantities.John and Les discuss how their multi-site study quantified not just product waste but also the substantial ""workforce time waste"" associated with medication disposal processes. With an estimated $56,557 worth of medication and staff time wasted annually at just the hospitals studied, our conversation examines the practical implications for healthcare systems nationwide. We also delve into potential solutions, including automated workflows that significantly reduce documentation time, manufacturer considerations for right-sized medication packaging, and the patient safety implications when clinical staff are pulled away from care to witness waste disposal.Whether you're a healthcare administrator, pharmacy professional, or clinician, this evidence-based discussion offers valuable insights into an often overlooked aspect of healthcare efficiency and resource management. Thanks to our sponsor, MIDAS Healthcare SolutionsLearn more about V.I.E.W. This week I had the pleasure of visiting with Dr. Lesa Rice-Jackson, CPPS, Managing Principal Consultant, Rice Jackson Health Safety & Regulatory Compliance Consulting, to discuss Lesa's expertise in occupational safety and health and product stewardship issues. Dr. Jackson has a distinguished career in private practice as an employee of a large industrial chemical company, and now is President of her own consultancy. Lesa is both a much sought after service provider to B&C and some of its clients and a member of the Board of Directors of the Product Stewardship Society, which I served on for several years before stepping down as President and Chair of the Board a few years ago. Lesa is a seasoned, practical, and extremely efficient professional to whom I could listen all day, given her insights on all things occupational safety and health related. We discuss the pending amendments to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Hazard Communication Standard (HCS), key issues likely to complicate compliance, and how best to balance occupational safety and health compliance with emerging and more rigorous best practice standards. Overview: We kick off this episode with a recap of our most recent CPPS one day workshop. Coaches from all over the world came in to hone their knowledge of the CPPS curriculum in order to become better coaches. We cover some of the things that stood out to us and some messages to all trainers. We then transition to a beautiful Ronin lesson, on accepting your Role as a Beginner in life, irrespective of your circumstances or what stages of life you're in. What ever you do in life, do it to your best ability. As Jordan Peterson says, “nothing done well, is insignificant.” The second half of the episode is dedicated to answering your questions, which include the funny story of how Smitty and DeFranco met, how to use KT tape for injuries and beyond, an important message on training with chains vs. bands, and what most are missing in their programming to ensure healthy knees. In July 2021, right after WWDC 2021 we recorded an episode predicting the possibilities that Custom Product Pages would unlock for marketers. For more than a year, these possibilities remained unrealized - because the Custom Product Pages were unavailable on Facebook. All of that has changed as of September 2022 - with the introduction of Custom Product Pages on Facebook. With this, the biggest challenge on iOS - of marketers being unable to align screenshots and ads to each other - has been overcome. We're already seeing some very strong results from aligning ads and screenshots - and in this episode we lay out how we are approaching CPPs - and how we are testing these on our team.KEY HIGHLIGHTS
“You have pain where?!” People have often asked why a healthy person like me would need physical therapy. They are quite surprised to learn about pelvic-floor therapy… and it's not long before I hear “I have pain there too.” What was once a specialty that not even many obstetricians or urologists knew about, Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy is now a rapidly growing field with an outsized demand for new therapists. Treating conditions like urinary and fecal urgency, incontinence, prolapse, nerve entrapment, surgical scarring, pre and postpartum issues, visceral restrictions and sexual dysfunction, it's not hard to see why. When Elizabeth Makous became a physical therapist over 30 years ago there were only a couple of classes teaching pelvic floor therapy. When seeing a patient complaining of vaginal pain “deep inside” she donned a pair of gloves and began treating patients internally. Elizabeth has continued to innovate new treatments in the field applying her unique kind of creativity to the world of medicine. After the home birth of her son she figured out a way to treat her own bathroom issues without surgery. She's developed protocols for successfully treating issues previously thought untreatable (even with surgery). She even approached a company called TheraWand to ask if she could make improvements to an existing vaginal wand product to more efficiently treat the pelvic floor rectally. After spending a year with a heat lamp sculpting plastic into the curves she felt would be more safe and effective… she'd created a brand new trigger wand that can be used to treat both men and women. Maybe it was the way she was raised… spending time in the clinic with her father, a doctor, and her mother, a nurse. Her grandfather was also a doctor in this small-town community who treated blacks for free during the segregation era in the South. Their passion spilled over in such a way that when meeting a patient with a need, Elizabeth says “there is a gift inside me that just looks for a way to treat it.” In this episode we talk about the importance of being your own medical advocate, how sitting for a living can be an occupational hazard, treating patients with lymphedema, pain management (without opioids), and how Covid restrictions didn't stop humans from needing touch. We also speak about being a highly-sensitive (HSP), the need for major reform in the emergency mental healthcare system, and how Elizabeth leans on her Catholic Chrisitan faith (for example: she took two medical mission-trips to Kenya in 2019 and 2021 helping to empower African men and women to alleviate pelvic pain and to treat female victims of female genital mutilation). Finally, chronic pain if left untreated can leave people feeling very desperate… and it doesn't have to be that way! Early in her nursing career, during an internship at a cancer hospital, Corrin Steinhauer, RN, DNP, NEA-BC, CPPS, learned a valuable lesson she's never forgotten. A wise, experienced nurse taught her “how to build relationships with patients … how to be kind and to be there for your patients,” said the new Chief Nursing Officer of the James. In this episode, Steinhauer describes how she got into nursing, her previous nursing and leadership positions, her connection with her patients, and why she came to the James earlier this year. In her new, leadership role, Steinhauer said her primary job is to be an advocate for the staff of approximately 1,500 James nurses. Steinhauer is also working on a new strategic nursing plan that ties in with the overall strategic plan for the rapidly growing OSUCCC – James. The overall goals of the strategic plan, she said, “are to continue to be one of the top five cancer centers, and that means a lot of leadership, at an informal, staff level, and also at a higher level for all of those with more formal, administrative titles. How do we continue to develop this community of nurses and make sure we remain relevant, up-to-date and are practicing with the best evidence-based guidelines? That's our goal.”
In this episode, Kevin hosts a group of amazing nurses to talk about the trial and conviction of RoDonda Vaught, a nurse charged with negligent homicide. This panel of amazing nurses will look at the case through the ED lens and discuss the implications for ED nurses around the world. How does this happen and where do we go from here?
