University life was an adventure to anticipate as Mumbi began her studies for the first time in a mixed boy-girl school environment. When she met Theo, it was nothing to write home about - at first. In fact, Mumbi ghosted Theo. That changed however when a romance developed between the two and Mumbi was enchanted by the charm, charisma and confidence of the man she in the end painfully loved beyond herself and eventually to the detriment of her health and studies. Today, Mumbi tells us about an on-again off-again 7-year relationship that started off well, perfect even, and ended in total despondency. A warning to our listeners today, this episode contains graphic depictions of domestic abuse. If this might be triggering for you, you might want to skip this episode. Milimo Mumbi and Chimwemwe Banda-Bwalya of leading Zambian law firm August Hill and Associates recently shared their views on diversity, equity and inclusion with Africa Legal's podcast host Thomas Pearson. August Hill Associate Milimo Mumbi's outlook on fostering diversity and an inclusive legal environment has been shaped by encounters with people from different ethnic backgrounds, even while at university. What Mumbi found was that differing opinions and suggestions on ways to resolve a problem helped produce solutions quicker, and he has seen that play out in the workplace. He has also noticed that more women are now given a place at the table, allowing them to be key decision makers. Mumbi's colleague, advocate Chimwemwe Banda-Bwalya, says this wasn't always the case, and while many law firms have made strides in empowering women, the industry is still dominated by men. Banda-Bwalya attributes this to men being viewed as readily available to put in the long working hours, while women are seen as being bogged down by family affairs. In the podcast, she discusses the importance of mentorship in empowering women in the legal profession. “I've been fortunate enough to have bosses who have been very deliberate about ensuring that I have certain standards to which I work and conduct myself in court,” said Banda-Bwalya. She also praised the late Irene Chirwa Mambilima, the former Chief Justice of Zambia, saying, “She's changed things for us women. If a woman can stand and lead the whole judiciary, there's so much more that we can do as women.” Mumbi believes inclusion and diversity need to be taught at law schools. He says at the moment these issues are only touched upon and taught as abstract concepts. “No one is speaking to the practicality of what this entails in the legal profession and how students should now ready themselves to actually go and practice that abstract concept that's being taught.” To address this, Mumbi says there should be a mentorship program at university level and opportunities should be created for law students to practically experience this in a workplace. He believes that to create further inclusivity, the industry needs to be more considerate of people with disabilities, encouraging the use of braille and sign language in courtrooms. Banda-Bwalya also shares her views on the next generation of lawyers and how technology will help better serve their clients.

Domestic work in Kenya, as well as in other parts of the world, is frequently characterized by low wages and a lack of recognition. Nevertheless, domestic workers have consistently proven to be indispensable to our daily lives. They maintain our households, ensure cleanliness, prepare our meals, and care for our children; essentially being responsible for our well-being. Despite their significant contribution to the economy and our overall welfare, domestic workers in Kenya face some of the most challenging working conditions. While the focus has rightfully been on the dire situations of Kenyan workers in the Middle East, it is equally important to address the issues occurring within our own homes. We must therefore discuss how domestic workers endure low pay, are often excluded from union membership, and may even lack proper documentation, making them vulnerable to mistreatment by their employers. They are also denied common employment benefits such as paid leave, health insurance, and pensions, further exacerbating their precarious situation. In this episode of The Kenyanist, Kamau Wairuri is joined by Mumbi Kanyogo, a Kenyan feminist scholar, to discusses the pursuit of dignified domestic work in Kenya. The episode sheds light on the challenges faced by domestic workers in Kenya and their fight for better conditions. Mumbi also highlights the historical context of domestic work, its connection to colonialism, and the exploitation that persists today. The episode also explores the efforts of domestic workers to organize and resist, including their involvement with the National Domestic Workers Council and the Kenya Union of Domestic Hotels Educational Institutions Hospitals and Allied Workers (KUDHEIHA). Preaching for the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, Mumbi Kigutha, CPPS offers a reflection on responding to our own "call within the call": "What kind of invitation is God proffering to you as we begin this year? What do you need to leave behind in order to follow Christ? How better can we love God and neighbor? What is the call within the call for each of you? I am convinced the answer lies in a process of the heart, in discernment, so that we may clearly hear God’s call separate from all the naysaying that our brains may distract us with. Just as Jonah, James and John, listened, trusted and responded, may we listen, trust and respond. What ails your heart, and what will soothe it? " Sister Mumbi Kigutha was born and raised in Kenya. She has worked with diverse vulnerable populations including stints with various UN agencies and currently resides on the southside of Chicago orking as a part-time International Consultant for Jesuit Refugee Services under the Reconciliation and Social Cohesion Department. Sr. Mumbi is also a regular contributor to the Horizons column of the Global Sisters Report and was also recently appointed as the organizing secretary of the Pan-African Catholic Theology and Pastoral Network. Sr. Mumbi graduated from CTU with a Master of Arts in Justice Ministry and a Certificate in Pastoral Ministry in addition to her previous MBA in Marketing. Her theological interests center around Womanist and Africana interpretations, reconciliation, racial and gender equity and their intersection with other areas of social justice. Visit www.catholicwomenpreach.org/preaching/01242021 to learn more about Sister Mumbi, to read her text, and for more preaching from Catholic women.
"Defining reconciliation for me is pretty simple, it's restoring right relationships," Sister Mumbi explains. But true restorative justice requires four pillars: peace, mercy, justice and truth.

Charity Mumbi and Jack Makau work for Muungano wa Wanavijiji, a social movement of 'slum' residents and urban poor people in Kenya, affiliated to SDI International. In this podcast they describe the last few months of working through the initial outbreak of Covid-19, outlining how communities and their organisations have been responding. Their agile initial approaches, alongside a longstanding ability to accurately map dense informal settlements has led to new partnerships with the Kenyan Ministry of Health, as part of its coronavirus task force. This work is also being supported by an action research project to track coronavirus responses with GDI’s Professor Diana Mitlin.

With Dr. Irene Mumbi Chege exploring COVID-19 response and protocols in the United States of America.
Valentine Special! We talk to activist couple Njoki Njehu and Soren Ambrose about how they met, balancing marriage & activism and what they have learned about fighting inequality over the last quarter of a century. The two met whilst campaigning in the late 90s during the huge protests against the World Bank and the IMF and have been involved in the fight against inequality ever since. Njoki is the pan-Africa coordinator of the Fight Inequality Alliance and leads the Daughters of Mumbi in Kenya who fight for women’s’ land rights. Growing up, together with her mother she worked closely with Wangari Maathai, the Nobel Prize winning environmentalist, helping her fight back against the oppression of the Kenyan government. Together with Soren she was one of the leaders of the Fifty Years is Enough campaign to abolish the World Bank and the IMFSoren is the Head of Policy at Action Aid. Together with Njoki, he was among the pioneers of the World Social Forum, held to challenge Davos. He was a key player in the 50 Years is Enough campaign. They give us a feel for the huge protests against the World Bank and the IMF in 1999-2001 and the hard work that went into building such a successful global coalition- bringing together church groups, unions, environmentalists and anarchists. The reflect on the life of activists in Kenya under the oppressive regime of President Moi. They find hope in abundance in today’s activism but encourage todays millennial activists to work hard to learn from history too. Vaginal Prolapse, scientifically defined, is what happens when organs such as the uterus, rectum, bladder, urethra, small bowel, or the vagina itself begin to prolapse or, in layman's terms ‘to fall out of their regular position'. The most popular causes of vaginal prolapse are childbirth, menopause and hysterectomies (surgical removal of the uterus).
