Earlier this week, footage quickly spread across the internet, featuring a devout Catholic nun expressing the sentiment that a victory for Donald Trump in the pending elections would be seen as divine intervention. The statement came following a proclamation by President Joe Biden (whom the nun didn't shy away from labeling as 'unfit and malevolent'), designating March 31, 2024, which happens to fall on Easter Sunday, as a day to celebrate transgender visibility. Mother Miriam, the nun at the center of this occurrence, runs a well-followed daily podcast. On this platform, she shared her view that many governments, including our own, are failing to both represent their citizens and abide by God's principles. She even raised concerns over an issue that has long been debated: the potential for non-citizens to participate in U.S. elections. In the nun's words, 'We're approaching an election year here in America. In simpler times, an election signified the period when ordinary citizens could reclaim control over their country's future.' However, she expressed her fear that these were not straightforward times, and a sinister realization was dawning on people worldwide. 'Everywhere, it's becoming palpable,' she stated, 'men and women are starting to understand the worrisome truth that their governments no longer operate in service of either God or the people they represent.' Anyone can be targeted by violent crime, including the pious. An upcoming full-fledged Catholic Nun, Sister Roberta Elam was an unlikely victim, but nonetheless, she was brutally strangled to death in a park near Mt. St. Joseph Mother House in Wheeling, West Virginia. She was in the midst of her silent meditation before taking vows in 1977, when she was silenced forever. This episode, Izzy and Harper lay down the foundation of the case: Sister Roberta's whereabouts and routine, as well as who the major suspect was in her sudden murder. Despite being a relatively sparse case from a time with little in the way of DNA evidence, there are more possibilities lying in wait. Stay tuned for part two, where more details and possible theories will be discussed.

Catholicism, Mysticism and Trance StatesSister Margaret shares her story as a long-time member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet (begun in 1650 France by six illiterate women with the help of a Bishop and a young Jesuit priest) and her mission work among remote villages in Chile. She simply and poetically gets down to the essence of things as she describes religion as a river with many tributaries, and finds much in common between the rituals of rural Church Service and her practice of Ecstatic Trance Postures over 20 years. Irma was the biggest hurricane in Florida, 400 miles across. It brought back a memory of our student ministry taking 55 people to volunteer after Hurricane Andrew, 7 days later. A student, Jason Mages, decided we had to do something. He said the right things to the right people and the next thing I knew, we had a caravan of motorhomes, vans and trucks heading south from Eustis, Florida for a 2 night and 3 day work adventure in a place that looked like a bomb went off and had wiped out Homestead, Florida. Now we relive that experience but on a state wide scale. No where in the state of Florida or the Caribbean Islands escaped Irma's wrath. Today I just heard that a Catholic Nun in Miami is attacking Irma's aftermath with her own chainsaw, helping citizens remove trees from their property. With friends in the destruction of Harvey and Irma just days apart, there are plenty of places for us to lead our people to physically show that we are people of The Way, The Jesus Way, that helps the hurting. Get going Youth Worker Nation! Be the Force that God uses to change your world!

Catholics love a good nun story. A chainsaw-wielding sister cleans up after Hurricane Irma? Social media gold. Nuns playing soccer? Yes please. And who can forget Sister Jean? (Not Zac). But every day and on every continent women religious are doing life-saving, cutting-edge work in hospitals, research laboratories, refugee camps and prisons. And those are the stories Dawn Araujo-Hawkins tells as a writer for National Catholic Reporter’s Global Sisters Report. We ask Dawn what she wished more people knew about the work of women religious, especially black sisters, and about her own experience working as a person of color in the mostly white Catholic media world. In Signs of the Times, we bring you the top takeaways from the Vatican’s historic summit on child sexual abuse and discuss the case of Cardinal George Pell, the highest-level church official ever to be convicted of abusing a minor. Next, Pope Francis plans to write an apostolic exhortation on last year’s youth synod. What is an apostolic exhortation and why should we care? And finally, a new poll shows growing support for pro-life positions. You can let us know what you think about our conversation with Dawn or any of our stories in our Facebook group.
