In this first episode of our second season of Thoughtlines we talk about how culture fights back with historian Professor Kenneth Marcus. As a visiting fellow at CRASSH he's been exploring what happens when music ‘goes there' and tackles the horror and heartbreak of war. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine and its musical resistance, rapidly going viral on social media, is effectively his project in real time. But his focus on the epic pacifist works of Arnold Schoenberg, Hanns Eisler, and Benjamin Britten reminds us that music was shaping the global human rights imagination well before now. Not only that, it's also a very effective way to wake up the classroom. Sermon from August 8, 2021 by Rev. Dr. Wes Jamison.
Jesus says, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry." As we think about what this could possibly mean, we are faced with some important questions. For what do I hunger? Do I hunger for the right things? What do I seek to satisfy my hungers? In this message, we explore these questions, not only as individuals but as a community of faith, which leads to a discussion on what it means to be a real church? This message will both inspire and deeply challenge you.

Missionary Patrick Stitt shared a challenging message with us on the importance of sharing the Gospel message with those who are spiritually hungry in the world around us. Reminding us that even though we may have an abundance of blessing and hope in our lives. There are so many who hunger and thirst to hear about the hope of Jesus Christ. What are we doing to share in our abundance with those who are starving? His message was focused around Matthew 15:21-28.The Stitt family are heading over to serve as missionaries in Osaka, Japan. They're planning to plant an Assemblies of God church in Osaka for the first time in over 30 years! Their mission is to bring the hope of the Risen Son to the land of the Rising Sun.
Have you lost hope for your situation? Do you feel like your prayers aren't being answered? Have hope: Pastor Ilya shares an encouraging word on asking, seeking and knocking. Don't give up. Our God is faithful and is working in your midst RIGHT NOW! Notes: Luke 11:5-10 Psalm 2:8 Jeremiah 33:3 Matthew 21:22 If you ask Him for bread or fish He will give it to you. Pray until you receive your answer. Don’t stop praying because it got hard, it got worse, or it’s taking longer. God is still in the business of answering His people. He is asking for His friend. Your life’s mission and goal has to be bigger that just to have enough for yourself. That’s an empty and useless life. Set a goal to have more than enough. The Church must ask, seek and knock into the windows of heaven for bread for our friends. Jesus said that those prayers will be answered. Don’t let your friend go hungry. Jesus was a friend of sinners. Friend from far off (far from God) DO YOU have friends from FAR OFF? Harvest is plentiful. “Friend of mine journeys from far off”. People are coming to God after being far off from Him and we as a church must offer them bread. 3 Loaves of Bread 1. Bread of Salvation - I am the bread of life: Jesus (Eternal life) 2. Bread of Healing - Jesus said my body is bread that is being broken. By His stripes we are healed. 3. Bread of Deliverance - Jesus said that children’s bread is deliverance. It’s better to be a person that could not deliver someone than being a person that would not deliver someone. You are raised to deliver! How do you get this bread for your family, friends and community? Ask - prayer Seek - connect Knock - put it to practice

The death rate through hunger and starvation in World War Two, rivals the number of those killed in combat. By 1945, agriculture had effectively ground to a halt, leaving hundreds of millions to survive on the equivalent of two potatoes a day. It was against this desperate backdrop that the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) was born. Marking the UN agency’s 75th anniversary, FAO’s Andre Vornic has produced a short podcast series on the founding of the key UN agency. In this first episode, ‘a hungry world rolls up its sleeves’.

In Episode #34, we are joined by Uday Garg, Managing Partner at Mandala Capital, a private equity firm focused on long term and sustainable investments across the food value chain in India and Southeast Asia. We discuss: The basics of food and agriculture ("agri") investing and why it is helpful to analogize to the oil and gas business. Why food and agri investment makes sense in Southeast Asia and India, from both a demand and supply perspective. The $2,000 per capita GDP threshold as a good indicator for consumption spikes in emerging nations. Mandala Capital's strategy for investing in food and agri. Why so much investment goes into agritech and whether agritech is really a new investment area. What cannabis (especially hemp) is doing to the US and global market and why seed companies and branding companies are most likely to emerge as major players. We need elected leaders to address climate emergency in an aggressive way. We don't need more deep thoughts about how to measure impact. We need trillions of dollars of capital going into investments that address the biggest problems we have. Family offices control Trillions of dollars that we can point in this new directioN to have profound impact for the world. As consumers and investors we need to make the right choice to be part of the solution. We need to recognise that individuals decide that this is their problem and not someone else’s problem. A piece of the 21st century pie--people everywhere are clamoring for their own life-sustaining morsel. But water, pesticide, distribution, and financial issues seem to conspire against assuring a hungry world there will be enough to eat. Noelle Cockett, executive vice president and provost for Utah State University, has long been researching answers to the question of how to feed 21st century populations. Dr. Cockett brought her expertise to Utah State University's College of Humanities and Social Sciences' Tanner Talks when she kicked off the 2013-15 lecture series last month with a look into the future of food production. Her talk was titled: “Feast or Famine: Feeding a Hungry World in the 21st Century.”
Three generations of philanthropists sit down to discuss business, charity, farming, and their 40 Chances in life, moderated by Tom Brokaw. If you had the resources to accomplish something great in the world, what would you do? That's the question legendary investor Warren Buffett posed to his son in 2006, when he announced he was leaving the bulk of his fortune to philanthropy. Howard G. Buffett set out to help the most vulnerable people on earth—nearly a billion individuals who lack basic food security. And Howard has given himself a deadline: 40 years to put more than $3 billion to work on this challenge. 40 Chances: Finding Hope in a Hungry World captures Howard's journey to make a difference in the world, and the lessons learned along the way. Warren joins his son and grandson, Howard W. Buffett, to celebrate the accomplishments so far, and embrace the new challenges ahead.
