SportsPro editor at large Eoin Connolly is joined by managing director Nick Meacham and Tony Maroulis, principal analyst at Ampere Analysis, to discuss two huge sports media stories. First up, they consider what the Premier League’s rollover of its UK£4.7 billion domestic rights deals with Sky Sports, BT Sport and Amazon says about the strategic outlook for English soccer’s top flight ahead of a period of digital transition, the health of the market in Europe, and the merits of the three-year sales cycle. Next on the agenda is AT&T’s decision to merge its WarnerMedia assets, including the likes of Turner Sports, with Discovery, which owns Eurosport and GolfTV. They ask what the creation of another massive media group will mean for the industry, what the implications are for partners like the NBA and IOC, and whether this creates a path to a more globalised sports offering. The 15-time major champion talked over Zoom to GOLFTV's Henni Zuël from his Florida home about how he's spending the downtime, the creative ways he's been filling the competitive void in the absence of tournament golf, and the details of that viral photo of his own "Champion's Dinner" alongside his daughter, son, and girlfriend.
In golf, the true greats are known by a single name. And just like Arnie, Jack, Tiger and Hogan, Seve takes his place as one of the best and most important ever to play the game. The Spaniard was charisma personified, both on and off the course, and taken all too early in 2011. If The Masters hadn't been postponed, this year would have marked the 40th anniversary of his first Green Jacket win and while there is no excuse needed it served as the ideal reason for an in depth chat about one of the game's most popular players. Join former caddie Billy Foster and fellow European Tour players Tony Johnstone and Mike Clayton as they reminisce about one of the most exciting players ever to pick up club. Links menitoend on this week's episode: For the best in high end golf apparel head straight to The Golf Society (https://www.thegolfsociety.com.au/pages/talkingolf) Billy Foster tells the story of the letter (https://twitter.com/GOLFTV/status/1243470985803763712?s=20) he got from Seve offering him the job. The birth of GolfTV | the death of MP & Silva | the charm of Shahid Khan | equal pay & Facebook ups and downs in surfing | the Phil Taylor-shaped hole in darts | the future of the sports consumption experience. David Cushnan and James Emmett reflect on another fortnight of change across the global sports industry, including the launch of the Discovery-PGA Tour joint venture OTT vehicle GolfTV, the final demise of rights agency MP & Silva, and Shahid Khan's withdrawn offer to buy Wembley Stadium from the FA. Later, we hear from three CEOs with very different challenges ahead of them: Sophie Goldschmidt (starts at 14.31), the former WTA, NBA, RFU, and CSM executive who has been CEO of the World Surf League (WSL) for the past 13 months; Matt Porter (starts at 27.16), the Matchroom Sport Director who has been CEO of the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) since 2008; and Miheer Walavalkar, the co-founder and CEO of LiveLike, which launched in 2015 as a VR company in sport but has evolved to provide full immersive broadcast experiences without the need for headsets. On the conversational agenda: - Making changes at the WSL: new formats, new calendar, new broadcast products, and a new, equal pay structure; - Working through live streaming technical challenges; - Ten years of globalisation at the PDC; - Why the Phil Taylor-shaped hole isn't as big as it once would have been; - The future of sports broadcasting and media consumption and why what we have today is not sustainable.
