And rising with the bitter righteousness of bile, the fantasy of sweet revenge becomes more urgent every hour. “Strike back!” say Truth and Justice. “Set the twisted record straight. Unmask the gossiper for who he is, for what she wrote. Redeem your ruined reputation.” And then Grace whispers, “You have already been redeemed. Your reputation is the best that it could ever be because your life is hid with Christ in God. The pleasures of retaliation are nothing—meaningless—beside the joys of being both forgiven AND forgiving.” Grace dulls our taste for vengefulness, and makes us hungry for the fullness of God's joy. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Gal 5:22). “Taste and see that the Lord is good” (Ps 34:8). With Pastor Mike Curry PEOPLE OF GRACE The Reach of Grace Ephesians 2:8-10 Introduction: Amazing Grace Seeking Grace (Luke 19:10) God's prevenient grace, goes before us, reaches out to us in numerous ways, and draws us to the heart of God. God reaching out to bring his children back to himself (Luke 15:1-31). The lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost son. Saving Grace (Rom. 6:23) We cannot save ourselves; only God can save us by his grace (Romans 2:8-10). Salvation is being “born again” (John 3). Christ made our salvation possible (Rom. 1:17-18). III. Sanctifying Grace (1 Thess. 5:23-24) God's sanctifying grace deals with the inward nature that compels us to demand our own way, which often leads to sin. God's sanctifying grace works at a moment in time as he renews our hearts by faith and across a lifetime of growth in grace as he transforms us into the image of his Son, Jesus Christ (Rom. 8:29-30). Sustaining Grace (Jude vv. 24-25) We cannot sanctify ourselves through our own efforts, we must rely on the power of the Holy Spirit's presence in our lives (Acts 1:8). God transforms believers into the image of his Son as we grow in his grace (Gal. 4:19). Sustaining grace is the power of God that keeps us from falling and causes us to stand blameless before him on the final day. What does “Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?” mean? What is the meaning of Romans 6:1?
In Romans 6:1-7, Paul emphatically rejects the idea that believers should continue in sin to magnify God's grace, stating, "By no means!" Paul gives a superb description of the salvation process; believers have died to sin, buried with Christ by baptism, and are called to walk in newness of life. What is grace? Simple question, but the answer is not exactly simple. The 4 words in our heading, “3” are at the start of Ch. 6 in today's reading from Paul's letter to the Romans. Let's try to understand the way in which ‘grace' operates. The word ‘grace' became a special word for Paul! He had been persecuting believers, he had put them in prison and had been complicit in the death of the first martyr, Stephen. But the Lord Jesus had picked him out as a ‘chosen instrument' [Acts 9 v.15]. We must put the word ‘grace' in its context; regrettably, in much popular Christian preaching, this is not done, the Catholics set the example long ago by selling ‘indulgences'. Twice in Chapter 5, which is also our reading today, Paul makes the point that those who have sinned, following the example of Adam (and this is everybody) can experience the “free gift” [v.15,16, 17] of grace, which means unmerited forgiveness; their sins are blotted out of God's sight, Paul experienced this. Wonderful! What then? Paul writes, “where sin increased, grace abounded all the more” [v.20]. Some read this as though it is saying that it does not matter how much you sin, grace keeps on abounding! If they, or you, think that, they are completely missing Paul's point. He realized how much grace had abounded for him at his conversion; and now he has a faithful race to run on the ‘narrow path'- look at what he writes in 1 Cor. 9 v.24-27 – drawing a parallel with the original Olympic Games. There is a misleading slogan, ‘Once saved, always saved' but it is a distortion of the words of Scripture. Note Paul's question, “What shall we say then? Are we to continue to sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?” [6 v.1,2] This immediately causes us to ask, how can we ‘die to sin' when we are surrounded by it. Our world has become so godless, it constantly bombards us with a great variety of temptations. Consider what Paul next writes: he says the result of having “died to sin” was “in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin” [v.6] He previously knew of Christ, but what he knew he completely misunderstood. All that changed at his conversion. Not only did he put on Christ's name through baptism, he now belonged to Christ. As he moves toward the climax of this most challenging epistle, he writes, “put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.” [Ch. 13 v.14] Having a genuine relationship with the Lord Jesus is the vital factor. More texts will challenge our thinking on this as we come to Chapters 7 and 8 tomorrow.

Right in the place of where we are lacking, right in the middle of our failures, right in the place of our pride, Jesus meets us there. The point is the grace. The point is Jesus. Rachel Held Evans also wrote, “The apostles remembered what many modern Christians tend to forget-that what makes the gospel offensive isn't who it keeps out but who it lets in.” Remember this morning that includes you. A new believer often says they feel like a weight fell off. They feel free. But over time, religious rules and people's expectations tend to weigh us back down. Legalism is one of the greatest tragedies in the church. It is a sin that must be exposed, called out, and rejected, because until legalism dies, we can't fully live.
As we learn grace, we also learn its gentleness. When we mistakenly believed that we could win eternity by toil, we had no patience with mistakes—our own, or those of others. We feared—and judged—all brokenness, as though severity might illustrate our fitness for the kingdom. If it was difficult, then it was good. But then the Lover of our souls announced His grace while we were mired in our sins—while we were, in His word, “undone.” “God proves His love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us” (Rom 5:8). Our foolish self-redemption project becomes, at last, the task that makes both men and angels softly laugh. We learn, at last, as the apostle wrote, “Christ is all” (Col 3:11). The kindness Jesus offers us becomes the gentleness we offer others. In time, we learn how to repent of all that isn't grace. So stay in grace. -Bill Knott

Any remarkable work of God's Spirit carrying grace to higher degrees in their souls, are in Scripture sometimes so called. If grace has before been weak and the actings of it low, and God comes in upon the soul with much more powerful influences and clear discoveries, raising grace to a much higher pitch in the soul, this is in Scripture sometimes represented as a work of conversion. Sometimes, when grace is first infused, it is but as a small dawning of light, like the first beginnings of the light in the dawning of the day- and the first actings of faith are feeble, appearing chiefly in holy desires after Christ and holiness, but are not attended with clear satisfaction. The convert is not yet enabled to rejoice in Jesus Christ as his Savior and Redeemer, but only to thirst after him from some sight of his excellency, to long that he were his Savior. And faith appears more in a strong hope of what Christ will do for him than in rejoicing in what he has done, and the soul remains so for some time before it has such discoveries as are satisfying. And then, afterwards, God comes in with greater power and brighter light, giving abundantly more clear discoveries that scatters the darkness that there was till then in the soul, and fills it with comfort- which, though it be the first remarkably clear discovery, yet is not really the first work of grace.
