After decades in bands like Wolf Parade, The Arcade Fire, Handsome Furs, Divine Fits, and Operators, Dan Boeckner has released his first solo album. We discuss "Boeckner!" on episode #214 of “For the Record.”

We're joined by musician Dan Boeckner (Wolf Parade, Divine Fits, Handsome Furs, Operators, Arcade Fire) to chat about his life and career in music. Grammy-nominated Howard Bilerman is a former member of Arcade Fire and the engineer for the band's breakthrough album, Funeral. Throughout his prolific career he has worked with over 400 artists, including Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Handsome Furs, Wolf Parade, Thee Silver Mt. Zion, Leonard Cohen and more. Here, Bilerman retraces the steps that took him from recording live bands to becoming an integral part of the city's music scene.

Over the past 15 years, Dan Boeckner has become a well-known fixture of the North American indie-rock scene. As one of the main members of Wolf Parade, Operators, Divine Fits, and the now-defunct Handsome Furs, he shows no signs of slowing down with new Operators and Wolf Parade albums set for release this year. We caught up with Dan before the sold-out Operators Presents Handsome Furs show to discuss the personal and technical logistics of performing Handsome Furs material live, being bullied as a young teenager on Vancouver Island, and the surprising merits of Netflix's Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Having devoted the past few years to her acting career, appearing in shows like Travelers and Hell on Wheels, Mackenzie Porter has returned to music with her first new songs since her JUNO and CCMA-nominated 2014 debut. Speaking with Mike, Mackenzie talks about juggling her acting and music careers, writing in Nashville, why her 2018 release strategies are different than those from 2014, how streaming has impacted the film and music industries differently, and a lot more. Then, Andrew catches up with Dan Boeckner, frontman for heralded acts like Operators and Wolf Parade. Operators are about to perform a pair of sold-out shows in New York and Toronto comprised of tunes from one of Dan's other critically adored projects, Handsome Furs. He talks about the process of choosing an ultimate Furs set list, how it feels to revisit and dissect some of those songs, and how he compartmentalizes his creative process considering the various projects and collaborations he's involved with.

Dan Boeckner puts most indie musicians to shame as far as his energy and sheer output. The Canadian musician co-founded the pioneering indie band Wolf Parade, fronted Handsome Furs and collaborated with Spoon's Britt Daniel in Divine Fits. Now, he leads the new band Operators. The band played at OpenAir on the release day of its debut album, "Blue Wave." The record is a continuation of the synthesizer-driven sounds of Handsome Furs with contributions of drummer Sam Brown and keyboardist Devojka.

Indie icon Dan Boeckner is perhaps best known for his role in the legendary mid-2000s post-punk indie rock band Wolf Parade. Since Wolf Parade (sadly) went on hiatus, Boeckner was involved in a project called Divine Fits (with Spoon frontman Britt Daniel) and he started Handsome Furs (with his ex-wife Alexei Perry). Currently, Boeckner has a new band called Operators. Last Gang Records will release the Operators debut full length, Blue Wave, on April 1, 2016. I chatted with the entire Operators line up including Boeckner (on vocals, guitar, and synths), drummer Sam Brown (New Bomb Turks and Divine Fits) and electro-wiz Devojka.
