Whether it's eating healthier, getting exercise, starting a meditation practice or staying socially connected, figuring out what to do to be happy might be simple – but actually doing these things and living in a way that lets us experience happiness is much harder. When we know there are things we can do that will make us healthier and happier, why do we struggle to actually do them? Why do we get caught in a cycle of chasing happiness instead of choosing joy, even when we know better? This is what Gretchen Rubin wanted to understand when she began studying happiness and why people form the habits they do.  It turns out that it has everything to do with how we relate to expectations.  Gretchen discovered that there are four different “tendencies” that tell us how different people approach habits and expectations – whether we question expectations, comply with expectations, rebel against expectations or uphold them from within.  We are born with our tendency and there's no right or wrong way to be, but our ability to pursue happiness and form habits is directly connected to which tendency we're wired with. In this episode, Gretchen describes each of the four tendencies in detail and ways to work with your type to go after the life you want. She also talks about habit formation and the different approaches to starting a new habit, so you can figure out which one works best for you!  This is so fascinating and has major implications for how we structure our lives, how we work with each other in business and relationships and so much more! Listen to discover: Concrete steps we can take to start boosting our happiness The "four tendencies" personality framework The Upholder, The Obliger, The Questioner and The Rebel – four different ways we all respond to inner and outer expectations How your tendency impacts how you form habits How to overcome resistance and work with your tendency to be as successful and happy as possible Misconceptions about happiness and techniques to form better habits Though it's true that everyone is different in terms of what makes us happy, we're also all different in how we get to the things that make us happy.  When we understand our wiring, we can overcome resistance and set ourselves up to achieve the life we want, in a way that is uniquely ours. By the time they hit middle age, most women have estrogen dominance. Instead of masking the symptoms with the birth control pill, Dr. Tabatha Barber talks about how to actually heal your body. Imagine life with regular periods, balanced hormones, and a clear mind!   How to Target Estrogen Dominance Eat a healthy, balanced diet Practice intermittent fasting Balance your hormones Improve your sleep Lower your stress levels Make time for you   About Dr. Tabatha Barber Dr. Tabatha Barber devotes her life to giving women a voice and a choice when it comes to their health and well-being. As a young girl, she struggled with self-esteem and identity issues, dealt with peer pressure, and survived the ridicule and stigma of becoming a teenage mother.  As she shared in her first published book titled, From White Trash to White Coat: The Birth of Catherine’s Purpose, those events led Tabatha to find her purpose in life.  With perseverance and grace, she redirected her path in life and become a successful physician. Dr. Tabatha Barber is triple board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, menopause, and functional medicine.  Dr. Tabatha cares for women one on one in her clinic as a functional gynecologist, and is the creator and host of The Functional Gynecologist Podcast; where she shares her wisdom and knowledge with women everywhere to reclaim their health.  She is also a keynote speaker, clinical instructor, mentor, medical director, wife, mom, and grandma!  By incorporating functional medicine into her women’s health practice, she provides women with the tools they need to optimize their health and happiness, which, in turn, allows those women to pursue their purpose in life.   What Estrogen Dominance Is Dr. Tabatha Barber talks about leaving her conventional gynecological career to take a more functional approach. She believes there are better ways to help women that don’t include masking symptoms with the birth control pill. Dr. Tabatha believes that nearly all women have estrogen dominance by the time they reach middle age. It’s the toxins we’re exposed to, the chemicals we consume, and our overall lifestyle that causes this estrogen imbalance. Almost every aspect of modern life contributes. The products we use in our home and on our body, the weight we carry, and the chemicals and toxins in the outside world all have a negative impact on our estrogen levels.   Intermittent Fasting for Weight Loss and Hormone Balance One of Dr. Tabatha’s biggest tips for controlling estrogen dominance is to change our diets and lose weight. Fat cells hold onto so many toxins and contribute to our estrogen overload, that’s why it’s essential to reduce excess weight. Practicing intermittent fasting is a healthy way to lose weight. It’s best to ease into it and Dr. Tabatha provides advice for how to do this. She explains how creating eating windows is better for our blood sugar and overall health than a constant grazing cycle. Finally, Dr. Tabatha shares the importance of putting yourself first. It’s true that you can’t pour from an empty cup. We all need to remember to replenish our own energy reserves and make time for ourselves every single day. It’s non-negotiable. How can you schedule in “me time” to your schedule? What’s the first thing you’ll focus on? Call the Integrative Health and Hormone Clinic today and schedule your first appointment at 319-363-0033.   Quotes “I feel for gynecologists because they want to help women. They want to take care of women, but they’re just as messed up as the patients are.” [11:05] “I made a drastic change. I left my conventional practice with my secure salaried paycheck, health insurance, and patients who loved me. I gave all that up because it was so unhealthy and it was destroying me. I opened a functional medicine practice so I was practicing what I was preaching. I got control of my diet. I started eating foods that nourished me, had healthy fats so I can make my hormones. I stopped eating out of plastic. I started doing what was necessary: I got off the caffeine, junk food, and sugar. I started sleeping at night. I started exercising regularly. I started managing my stress in a more appropriate way. I started walking the talk. I did all the things, I practiced what I preached. It was amazing. I have normal periods now! They’re regular every month, they’re not heavy, I’m not crying or ripping my husband’s head off. I don’t have breast tenderness. It all went away!” [13:15] “I want other women to realize that it doesn’t matter what you’ve done, who you’ve been, who you’ve been with. You still can take control and make a shift in your life.” [24:36] “The first thing you have to do is admit that you’re worth it and that you’re actually going to invest in and take care of yourself. In the long run, you can’t take care of the people you love. It’s a loving thing to do to take care of yourself.” [37:19]   In This Episode The difference between conventional and functional gynecology [9:00] The problem with masking the root cause with the birth control pill [12:30] The symptoms of Estrogen Dominance [15:15] How losing weight will lower estrogen dominance [22:00] How to use Intermittent Fasting to support your menstrual cycle [26:00] How to start intermittent fasting [33:30] Why you need to take care of yourself first [37:15] Why it’s essential to schedule in “me time” [37:45]   Links & Resources Use Code DIM for 10% Off Use Code ESTROGENDETOX for 15% Off Free Gift: The Functional Gynecologist's Guide to Balancing Your Hormones Check Out the 10% Happier App   Find Dr. Tabatha Barber Online Follow Dr. Tabatha Barber on Instagram | Facebook | YouTube   Find Your Longevity Blueprint Online Follow Your Longevity Blueprint on Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | YouTube | LinkedIn Get your copy of the Your Longevity Blueprint book and claim your bonuses here Find Dr. Stephanie Gray and Your Longevity Blueprint online    Follow Dr. Stephanie Gray on Facebook | Instagram | Youtube | Twitter | LinkedIn Integrative Health and Hormone Clinic Podcast Production by the team at Counterweight Creative    Related Episodes  Episode 39: Biote Hormone Pellet Therapy With Dr. Gary Donovitz Episode 43: Liver Cleansing With Steven Dake Episode 41: How To Reduce Toxins In The Home With Genevieve White

Happy New Equanimity New Year to you all. Now I know social media will be awash with everyone wishing everyone else a Happy New Year for 2021 as we leave behind a year most of us would like to forget. But even as we move into 2021 we have the ongoing restrictions and fallout from this pandemic to deal with so I didn't want to glibly just wish everyone all the best. I wanted to offer you something that you can do for yourself, your family and even people you don't know. Now as you may know I meditate every day and during this lockdown period I've been doing quite a lot of more of that which has been really helpful. Meditation has many benefits. It can help you become more compassionate, promote loving kindness and practice sympathetic joy, but the near enemy of compassion is burnout, the near enemy of loving kindness is attachment and the near enemy of sympathetic joy can become simply comparing and none of these near-enemy's are good for you. One of the golden nuggets of meditation is ' Equanimity'. It's the secret sauce if you like. It helps us control what we can't control and not worry about what we can't control. This can be a major benefit in things like conflict resolution and resilience training (and this is something we will be adding to our conflict management & resilience training this coming year). This is about mental training (the inner game) and I hope that you take me up on my offer of checking out the app below and before anyone asks, no, I'm not an affiliate of the product. This is just one app that I've found to be very useful. And Here's the 10% Happier App link - https://10percenthappier.app.link/share

I recently asked people on Twitter what new habits they are trying to adopt. 95% of the responses had meditation as one of the habits.  I've read a lot of articles on how meditation physically changes the brain, how it's a gamechanger not only for performance, but simply for enjoying life and how consistency is important.  But I've struggled.  I'd do it for a week and then give up (and then beat myself up for it).  I'd find my way back to it, but I couldn't make the habit stick.  I tried to figure out why I was having trouble making meditation a regular part of my routine.  When I believe in the benefits of something, I just do it - like my plant-based diet, like my 14 year commitment to my career as a cyclist... so why couldn't I just DO meditation?  It's because I couldn't tell if it was working. I recently read the book, "Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics" by Jeff Warren and Dan Harris. By read, I mean listened.  Dan and Jeff both are narrating the book and Jeff even leads meditations in the audiobook.   Jeff was the funny, relatable meditation expert in the book and his teaching style really resonated with me.  He wasn't all serious and monk-y (is that a word?).  I realized I by being too skeptical, I was looking for reasons for it NOT to work.  I was even more excited to find the 10% Happier meditation app which has different instructors and just seemed like a more natural fit for me. As I delved more into Jeff Warren, I learned he has also authored other books, leads meditation retreats, and is the founder of the Consciousness Explorers Club that creates community around meditation.  Jeff enjoys exploring consciousness through the mind, through the body, and even socially.  His goal is to help people live more fulfilled lives.  Jeff's background before he found meditation was in journalism, especially on the science side of things.   When Jeff went to his first meditation retreat, he said, that meditation did not come easily for him. "I was and am a distractible, impulsive, over-thinking, teeth-gnashing worrier. I preferred to think about all the things that could happen in meditation than actually were happening." If you are curious about meditation or are struggling to make it a regular part of your life, I think you'll enjoy this podcast.  I asked him a lot of questions based on what I learned in Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics. We talked about how to meditate (even if you don't want to focus on the breath), different tools for learning about and accepting the inner workings of our emotions and thoughts, how to find the right practice for you, and even ways to make things like sports or even showering part of your meditation practice. Topics Discussed in the Podcast  the reasons why people have trouble starting meditation how to stick with it the 6 mental muscles how to create a practice that works for you power in equanimity how to know if meditation working  Listen Now   Freebies from Jeff   Links Jeff Warren's website Try 10% Happier App for Free Jeff's online meditation courses Support the Show If you would like to support the growth my show, I'd love your contribution on.  Patreon.  The current production of this free show is primarily supported out of my own pocket and a small portion is covered through the donations on Patreon. ABC Nightline's Dan Harris has become a self-professed meditation evangelist ever since his infamous on-air panic attack in 2004 and today he tries to win over the ultimate skeptic...ME.  He reveals how daily meditation has improved life at home and at work, he dispels some of the myths surrounding meditation, and he discusses the  science behind the physical, mental and emotional health benefits of meditation.  He gives a crash course in how you can begin meditating with as little as one minute of free time, and he tells stories from his 23 state meditation bus tour including encounters with some surprising meditation fans like an Ohio Congressman and the cadets and professors of VMI. Find out how you can succeed and live mindfully without losing your edge, learn how from Dan Harris on The Nice Guys Podcast today   ABC News anchor Dan Harris has found a way to be happier, calmer and—according to his wife, at least—nicer in the midst of one of the most competitive careers on earth. And if it can work for someone as fidgety, skeptical and stress-prone as him, it can probably work for you, too. It's a far cry from the heal-your-life, solve-all-your-problems over-promising of self-help. What Dan stumbled upon is practical, doable, and scientifically researched. Dan tells this story as only a reporter can: through deep research, tough questions, and a healthy dose of humor.   Here's more to know about Dan:         - Author of the New York Times bestselling book 10% Happier        - Co-creator of the 10% Happier App        - Through a disgraced evangelical pastor, a mysterious self-help guru, and a fateful gift from his wife, Harris discovered meditation        - He got ABC News anchors Diane Sawyer and Robin Roberts to start meditating        And what we learned talking to him:        The "Voice in your head" does not mean you need to seek professional help      - He's not a tree-hugging, yoga-loving, hippie, kind of guy, but he found that meditation does work        -Meditation can help lower your blood pressure, boost your immune system and even re-wire parts of your brain        - His book "10% HAPPIER: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That Actually Works" is one man's accidental quest to boost his happiness quotient without losing his professional drive        - His "10% Happier" app is for people who are allergic to New Age-y nonsense.
