Of course each week we review and discuss the productivity and technology news headlines of the week. We usually started off by going through the blogosphere and the podcast just sphere and talking about the articles and episodes that we have heard out there. And so of course, Augusto, let's get started with our first story this week. Augusto Pinaud 0:48 Our first story is an article from Coplin talking about the power of Never give up. And I'm going to let you start because I'm dealing with technology. Sorry, Raymond Sidney-Smith 1:01 no problem. And, and so I think this is really good to like set goals. And also thinking through it's just a refresher on that concept that if you have kind of an annual planning process, I use a plot process that I developed over the years called the Reflect, ACT, PLAN, an act guide, and it's something that I created for myself. And so you know, you're welcome to use this concept. But the idea here is that you take the 30 days of the month, you choose whatever month you want in a year, and each day you reflect on a different aspect of your life.

Raymond Sidney-Smith 1:23 So this was the pixel fall event on October 19. And of course, at this event, the keynote and the product announcements really were for the long awaited, but mostly known about made by Google smartphones, the pixel six and the six Pro. And so what did you think about the event? Kind of, you know, generally? And what was the What did you feel like, you know, was good about the event bad about the event. And then we could talk about some of the particulars regarding the pixel six, the six pro and of course, the announcement of pixel pass, which is Google's first kind of subscription service for the pixel phones specifically. Art Gelwicks 2:05 Yeah, the event itself, I thought was, if you look at it in the context of all the events that happened, I'd say it was one of the better ones that's happened recently, they did a very good job of laying out exactly what they wanted to cover and how they wanted to cover it. They didn't lose sight of their messaging during the presentation itself. They made it very inviting, why they felt the need to actually do it in the Google Store was, I don't know, that kind of alluded me a little bit. But you could tell from the beginning, that they were all in on the main parts of these new phones, the tensor chip,

So because that's that litany, I just sound like a slacker. I mean seriously. Raymond Sidney-Smith 1:08 Well, it's great. Thanks Art Gelwicks 1:09 for having me. Raymond Sidney-Smith 1:10 Yes, of course. Great to have you on the show to talk about this Samsung Galaxy unpacked part two. And so a brief event. But notwithstanding they announced a few things. Art Gelwicks 1:23 It was like a mini It was like a mini event. Raymond Sidney-Smith 1:26 Yeah, exactly. So so let's get into kind of the primary thing they announced was the Samsung Galaxy z flip three, the bespoke edition, a favorite word of mine, bespoke. And so tell us a little bit about what you thought about the bespoke edition of the Z flip three, Art Gelwicks 1:44 it the whole package of the event was all about personalization. Not only was the flip three talked about for bespoke, and I'm gonna dig into that, but also the galaxy Watch has a split, bespoke option now. And what that really is talking about is this is Samsung's unveiling of their customers supply chain, manufacturing on the fly, for lack of a better term. And if we focus on the Z three, flip the Z flip three, I'll always get that wrong. What you can literally do is go into the Samsung site and choose the color configurations that you want for the device. Do you want a black, you want a gray? Do you want a yellow Do you want a salmon color, I forget the exact color combinations they have. But you can pick and choose them. And then they will build the device to your spec for that it doesn't change the internals, you don't get to choose a better camera or a bigger battery. It's all about the look of the device.

And they start out in the article saying well, this is star with the base of a Steve Jobs and then we add a bunch of other people. But Raymond Sidney-Smith 1:17 let's cover let's cover the three things. So the three things are meeting should have three to five people, they should be 30 minutes or less. Augusto Pinaud 0:37 So the first article we have is from make use off and it's titled Why context switching is sabotaging your productivity and what you can do about it. And really what they talk about context switching is fast switching, you know what happened when you're working on something, and then you get a distraction, you get a beeping, you get a notification, and then you move on trying to do the famous multitasking that the only thing that produces multi failure, at least from my experience, but and I agree it's a great article, it's a short article to read. And I love the beginning of the article says When is the last time you get 30 minutes on uninterrupted time. And this is something I work a lot with, with clients, you know, they don't get interrupted time and sometimes our own fault, because instead of having our devices work for us, we tend to work for our devices. Or when you look most people do not have take the time to decide which notifications are important. Which notifications we're really want to get, they just instead open. You know the flow of notifications to anything. I I have said for years, I don't check email on my iPhone, I check email on the iPad, I carry the iPad with me 99% of the time sorry,

Couldn't find a button there, and we're your hosts for Anything But Idle. This is Episode 82. Correct me if I'm wrong. So is this episode 8282 82. Look at that. And we're coming to you for a special commentary episode, in response to Microsoft's product event yesterday. And so what we're going to do is we are going to introduce our guest, Art Gelwicks. You know him as the productivity blogger at the idea pump, and he's our friend of the various podcasts, Art Gelwicks. How's it going? Art Gelwicks 0:47 Hey, guys, I'm getting rained on here right now. But doing well. Raymond Sidney-Smith 0:51 Yeah, we can. We can hear that. We can hear the pitter patter. Art Gelwicks 0:54 It's coming down pretty good. So hopefully it stays on the outside of the house. so Raymond Sidney-Smith 1:00 fantastic. So let's get right into the event. There were supposedly eight product announcements, I tried to capture all of the product announcements, I think I got all eight. And so talk to me about the event. What did you think about the event? What were the things that stood out for you? Initially? Art Gelwicks 1:18 Well, watching the event I right away, I'll say it was short, from beginning to end. I think the total duration was, what, 45 minutes. So they didn't drag a lot of the stuff out? Augusto Pinaud 1:30 Well, actually, it was three of the four because the event could have been really Art Gelwicks 1:39 six. Okay. So yes, that is one of the first takeaways is that, and unfortunately, I don't remember the gentleman's name, but the first speaker does tend to dry out his speech a bit he it, it has a very Bob Ross kind of vibe to the initial part. So Augusto Pinaud 1:57 I was watching it on YouTube, I couldn't watch it live. And I was doing to x and I came two or three times to check that the 2x was actually working. Yeah, it's Art Gelwicks 2:06 his his pacing could use a little little bit of a goose up. I mean, when you when you compare it to some of the other events, when you compare it to the Samsung in the apple there there, it was definitely lower key than you would normally expect. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's just kind of a thing. So from a messaging standpoint, and a targeting standpoint, they stayed on topic. I mean, they didn't dig into Windows 11, or Microsoft 365, or anything like that. This was a hardware event. And that's what they talked about was hardware.

Hopefully, hopefully, it's being offset by the fact that people are getting our nose be apps on the iPhone and they, you know, pay us this way. So maybe this will fund my, you know, gadgetry. Augusto Pinaud 1:40 Hey, that's that's that's the life. So we need to continue to figure out ways to continue doing that. So let's begin with what was your full impression of the show before we get into the details of all the offerings and what they see what you thought about the show. Michael Sliwinski 1:59 So I mean, the show was, you know, full of California. And, and but the most important thing, I think was the fact that they were not really major upgrades to the, you know, to the phones and to the watches and to anything apart from the mini, because mania was really a big a big, big jump.
