Most people have no idea what dental assistants actually do — and it's costing the profession trust, talent, and respect. In this episode, Dr. Mark Thoreson pulls back the curtain on what it really takes to become a successful dental assistant — from the truth about patient trust to the soft skills no one's teaching. You'll hear how his weekend training program in rural Wyoming is filling clinics with confident, skilled assistants, all while fighting myths that dental assisting is just suction and charting. We get real about hiring challenges, hands-on education, and how new technology like AI and 3D printing is creating massive opportunities for assistants who are ready to grow. Onboarding in a dental office isn't just about policies and protocols—it's about how clearly you communicate when the pressure is on. Miss the mark, and even the most experienced hires can falter. Training new team members starts with avoiding assumptions. Just because someone has experience doesn't mean they understand how things are done in a new environment. Without clear instructions, even skilled workers can struggle. A strong system is built on small steps, clear language, and open communication. The process works best when everyone is involved. Dentists, assistants, office managers—each person plays a part in helping new hires settle in. Simple tools like checklists, written guides, and regular check-ins can make a big difference. Encouraging questions, offering support, and being patient helps new team members feel more confident and capable. Feedback matters too. It should be clear, respectful, and focused on growth. Mistakes are part of learning, and when handled well, they lead to better performance. It's also important to recognize that people of different ages may learn differently. A flexible approach helps everyone stay on the same page. Keeping training materials up to date and reviewing them often ensures the whole team stays sharp. When learning becomes part of the culture, the result is a stronger, safer, and more connected practice. In today's rapidly evolving business environment, traditional leadership models are becoming increasingly obsolete. The command-and-control approach, once the hallmark of successful leadership, is now often seen as a relic of the past. With the rise of concepts like Quiet Quitting, The Great Resignation, and the friction surrounding remote work, leaders are faced with challenges that require a more nuanced, empathetic approach. In a recent interview on the On the Brink with Andi Simon podcast, Melissa Robinson-Winemiller delved into the critical role of empathy and Emotional Intelligence (EQ) in modern leadership. Melissa Robinson-Winemiller's Expertise can Help You Become that Great, Empathetic Leader Melissa Robinson-Winemiller, an expert in leadership development and an advocate for empathy-driven leadership, brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the table. With over 30 years of leadership experience, she has seen firsthand how the lack of empathy can derail even the most promising careers and business endeavors. Her journey into empathy and EQ coaching began after losing a career to what she describes as "unempathic leadership." This experience propelled her to explore how empathy could transform leadership and business outcomes. Melissa's dedication to this cause is evident in her impressive educational background. She holds an MBA and a Master of Data Analytics, providing her with the tools to support her arguments with data-driven proof and sound business cases. She is currently pursuing a second doctorate in Interdisciplinary Leadership, with a dissertation focusing on Empathy in Leadership. This commitment to understanding and promoting empathy as a core leadership competency is further bolstered by her certifications in Change Management (ACMP/Prosci), the Society for Human Resource Management (CP), and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEI&J) from Cornell University. Empathy is Really about Becoming Better Human Beings Melissa's message is clear: the future of leadership lies in evolution, not extinction. Leaders who are willing to develop their empathy and emotional intelligence will be better equipped to navigate the complexities of the modern workplace. They will be able to build stronger, more resilient teams and create a culture of collaboration and innovation. In conclusion, the interview with Melissa Robinson-Winemiller serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of empathy in leadership. As the business world continues to evolve, leaders must recognize that empathy is not a weakness but a strength that can drive success. By embracing empathy and emotional intelligence, leaders can create a more inclusive, productive, and innovative workplace where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. This interview is a must-listen for anyone interested in the future of leadership and the role that empathy will play in shaping it. As Melissa so aptly puts it, "The more we all work together to be better human beings, the more we all have to gain." Have you ever wondered what it takes to leave a stable, high-stress job to pursue a passion that lights up your soul? Not only that, what about taking that passion and using it to build a career with your passion of travel? Justin Liebman transitioned from a high-stress finance job to a fulfilling career as a yoga teacher. Justin, like many others, found solace and passion in yoga, which ignited most when he began studying yogic philosophy. After years of dedicated practice, he took the leap in 2018 to leave his corporate finance job to pursue teaching yoga full-time.His journey wasn't without its challenges. Justin shared that the transition period was fraught with financial uncertainty, teaching only a handful of classes every week. However, his passion kept him going, and within six months, he was able to build a sustainable teaching schedule. Justin traded financial security for happiness, a decision he never regretted. One of the most transformative aspects of Justin's journey has been the practice of meditation. Meditation helped him cultivate patience and navigate life's chaotic moments with a clearer mind. With numerous retreats now available, choosing the right one can be overwhelming. In our conversation, Justin shared invaluable tips:1. Find the Right Teacher: Ensure that the teacher's style and approach resonate with you.2. Check the Schedule: Look for retreats that align with what you want from the experience, whether it's an immersion in yoga or time for excursions.3. Understand Your Goals: Determine whether you want a serene retreat with less activity or a complete immersion into yoga practices.Justin's story is a testament to the transformative power of yoga and travel. He encourages everyone to take the leap and embrace the uncertainties that come with following your passion. Remember, the journey may be long, but the rewards are worth it.We talk about:00:00 Intro01:46 Justin's Journey from Finance to Yoga03:59 Building a Yoga Teaching Career08:19 The Importance of Patience and Meditation11:14 Choosing the Right Retreat16:00 Hosting and Attending Retreats20:17 Maintaining Health and Wellness While Traveling23:56 Yoga Techniques for Stressful Travel Days29:46 Rapid Fire Questions and ConclusionConnect with Justin Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/justinlyogi/ Connect with meFollow the Podcast on IG: http://www.instagram.com/transformwithtravel Follow Kelly Tolliday on IG: http://www.instagram.com/kelly.tolliday Travel with RNR: https://transform-with-travel.captivate.fm/travelwithrnr Join us in Peru or Greece in 2025!Thanks To Our Sponsor:Anatomie: Head to Anatomie's Website for more information. Today we are talking about solution #6 to help you become even more self-motivated which is to Set Goals.Setting goals and then working towards achieving them is what motivates us to succeed. Start by writing your goals down and position them so they are visible. Make sure they are measurable goals and not just wishes, dreams, and hopes. Make sure to have a date with each goal (month, day, year) you want to start or achieve your goal by.  Discuss your goals with your spouse, partner, a colleague, or a friend or friends. Develop a “cheer squad” to encourage you along the way. You have a higher probability of achieving your goals when you share them with others for them to support you on your goal achievement journey. Tune in tomorrow for Solution #7 to help you become even more self-motivated.  Remember to subscribe to my high-value proven business success tips and resources Blog (https://www.accountabilitycoach.com/blog/)  Want more from The Accountability Coach™, subscribe to more high-value content by looking for me on https://www.accountabilitycoach.com/my-podcast/ and on most podcast platforms and in most English-speaking countries, or by going to https://itunes.apple.com/podcast/accountabilitycoach.com/id290547573.  I'm the author of many books, including, Excuses Don't Count; Results Rule, Live Life with No Regrets, No Excuses, The Guide to Stopping Procrastination, The Power of Visualization, My Gratitude Journal, the Work Life Balance Emergency Kit, and The Roadmap To Success with Stephen Covey and Ken Blanchard, and more.   Aim for what you want each and every day!  Anne BachrachThe Accountability Coach™

Today we are talking about solution #3 to help you become even more self-motivated which is to Schedule your Emails and Phone Calls.Set a time each day for reading and following up on emails. Don't open emails as soon as they arrive – they can become a major distraction. If you receive a lot of emails, especially from clients, schedule two “email sessions” during the day and stick to those two time slots. It may not be easy at first, but you can do it.Phone calls can also be a major distraction. Depending on the type of business you operate, consider using an answering service to screen calls, if you don't have someone who answers your phone for your firm. You can then return calls during scheduled “telephone times”, according to their importance.  Download my complimentary incoming calls script example by going to https://bit.ly/HandleCalls.   Tune in tomorrow for Solution #4 to help you become even more self-motivated.

This gives you a sense of achievement and encourages creativity and motivation.  Break large projects into small steps, and then congratulate yourself on each completed step.Focus on the projects that are going to make money as the highest priority.Tune in tomorrow for Solution #3 to help you become even more self-motivated.

When we think about Stoic philosophers, we typically think about the thinkers of ancient Greece and Rome, like Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius. But my guest, Mark Matousek, says there was an incredibly insightful Stoic philosopher who lived on the American continent in more modern times: Ralph Waldo Emerson.Matousek is the author of Lessons from an American Stoic: How Emerson Can Change Your Life, and today on the show, he shares how Stoicism and Transcendentalism overlap and how you can use Emerson's Stoic philosophy to become a nonconformist. We discuss the lessons you can learn from Emerson on developing self-reliance, embracing the strengths of your weaknesses, trusting your own genius instead of imitating others, gaining confidence from nature, compensating for the difficulties of relationships through the joy of deeper connections, living with greater courage, and more.Resources Related to the PodcastEmerson's essay "Self-Reliance""I Sing the Body Electric" by Walt WhitmanAoM Article: A Man's Guide to Self-RelianceAoM Article: Emerson's Advice on How to Read for Greater Self-RelianceAoM Article: 31 Journaling Prompts for Building Greater Self-RelianceAoM Podcast #384: What It Really Means to Be Self-ReliantAoM Podcast #894: Thoreau on Making a LivingAoM Podcast #861: 7 Journaling Techniques That Can Change Your LifeSunday Firesides: Despise Not the Thing That Would Save YouSunday Firesides: Look Into the TombConnect With Mark MatousekMark's websiteThe Seekers Forum
