What happens when a physician reclaims her health—and purpose—through functional medicine and faith? This week on Health Coach Talk, Dr. Sandi sits down with Dr. Tabatha Barber, a triple board-certified OB-GYN turned functional medicine doctor and coach, to discuss the powerful connection between gut health, hormone balance, spirituality, and soul healing.Show notes: https://functionalmedicinecoaching.org/podcast/tabatha-barber-131/
Oh, if I had a time machine and could return to when our kids were young, I would. I made my life complicated because I made our meals complicated. Let me explain: I became a mom at 40. I married Steve, who had two precious (most of the time ) daughters. So, I became an instant mom to two preteens, and as a bonus, I could finally use my nutrition training on my family. Hmmm...do you see any potential problems? I would make elaborate, nutrient-dense multi-course meals. These meals were so much work that I was almost too tired to eat or clean the kitchen. When the kids complained that the lunches I packed could feed three of their friends, it didn't faze me a bit. But they were so much work! We would order pizza if I was running late from work and couldn't make the elaborate meals. I couldn't seem to find the middle ground. As I shared this story with today's podcast guest, Dr. Tabatha Barber, she explained that most of her meals can be put together in 20 minutes or less—I say YES to that idea! Dr. Tabatha is the author of Fast To Faith, a best-selling book that contains her 20-minute or less recipes. ______ Ground Luxe When I was forced into menopause with my cancer diagnosis, restful sleep NO LONGER HAPPENED FOR ME. One of my podcast guests shared that he has become a great sleeper, partly thanks to grounding sheets. After my skepticism passed, my desperation to sleep took over. I started reading articles, and I discovered that the science is solid. Studies have shown that participants using grounding sheets experience a significant drop in cortisol levels, leading to improved sleep quality and reduced stress. What did I have to lose? I researched, found the best grounding sheets on the market for the best price, and bought them. It took me a few nights, but I sleep much deeper now. I fall asleep faster and wake up feeling refreshed! I wish someone had told me about these sheets years ago. I contacted the company, and they offered my community a 20% discount! https://groundluxe.com/deborahenos Use the code Enos20 for 20% off. ______ Air Dr. I've been using the Air Doctor air purifier for almost a year and absolutely love it! I first heard about it from Dr. Mark Hyman, and even though it was a bit of a splurge compared to what I usually spend, I'm so glad I invested. Every time I change the filter and see all the gunk it collects, I smile, knowing it's doing a great job keeping my air clean! And I'm so happy that all that gunk isn't going into my body ;) Click here to purchase: https://airdoctorpro.com/?oid=17&affid=6165 ______ About Dr. Tabatha Barber Dr. Tabatha Barber is a doctor, author, speaker, and devoted Jesus-lover, as well as a proud mom and grandma. What a treat to have Dr. Tabatha Barber, author of the best-selling book Fast To Faith, on the podcast. She explained that our bodies function like a chemistry experiment. When we think in a certain way, we produce chemicals that can have positive or negative effects. I don't know about you, but I do find it shocking that the thoughts I think can create chemical messengers in my body that can heal me or harm me. You have so much more power than you realize! We also discussed a topic near and dear to my heart, JOY. Where's your joy? If we put everyone else first, that will steal your happiness. Dr. T. explained that we get caught up in the lie that taking care of ourselves is selfish. She said that she felt God tell her that caring for herself wasn't selfish but SELF PRESERVATION. Dr. Tabatha shared simple tips that can help you to change your mindset and increase your daily joy. Please enjoy part one of this conversation and join us next week when we talk about 20-minute or less dinners, fasting, and her lifelong battle with depression. ______ Young Living Here's the link to my favorite essential oil kit from Young Living! Today I'm thrilled to have the incredible Dr. Tabatha Barber join us on the show. Dr. Barber and I recently connected at the Mindshare Conference, and in this episode, she shares so much incredible information on fasting, eating nutrient-rich whole foods, and their widespread impacts on thyroid health. Dr. Barber has decades of experience as a triple board-certified physician, focusing on a holistic and integrated approach to women's health. She discusses how changes in diet like the removal of gluten and introduction of healthy fats and proteins, transformed her health, and how it can be a gamechanger for other women struggling with their thyroid health, too.We also discuss the benefits of fasting for hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's, and how stress has a huge impact on overall thyroid health. Dr. Barber emphasizes the critical role of our adrenals and gut health in managing thyroid and hormone issues and shares her comprehensive approach to addressing these core health challenges. Finally, we explore the often misunderstood topic of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Dr. Barber has seen firsthand how HRT can be life-changing for women in menopause and what factors to consider before starting it. So many facets of women's health have been riddled with misinformation, misguided treatments, and lack of research — but it doesn't have to be like that anymore. If you're struggling with thyroid issues, menopause, or anything we've discussed today, you're not alone. I hope this episode brings you clarity and the motivation you need to take your health back and search for the answers you've been looking for. I am delighted to have my good friend and fan-favorite, Dr. Tabatha Barber, joining me again to share her wisdom on the podcast! Dr. Tabatha is a triple board-certified OB/GYN specializing in menopause and functional medicine. She has a wonderful podcast called The Gutsy Gynecologist Show and is often referred to affectionately as the Gutsy Gynecologist. Dr. Tabatha was with me in two previous podcast episodes, #206 and #212, and both are in the top twenty downloaded podcasts in the last 18 months! Many women suffer unnecessarily when going through perimenopause and menopause. Dr. Tabatha and I have an AMA (Ask Me Anything) episode today. We discuss weight gain related to perimenopause and menopause, issues with estrogen replacement therapy, how libido can be impacted by many different factors, how to address a partial hysterectomy and HRT, and bioidenticals versus synthetic hormones. We also get into lab work, skin reactions relative to perimenopause and menopause, emotional eating, leptin resistance, and many other topics. I'm grateful for all the great questions and have no doubt this episode with Dr. Tabatha will be another fan-favorite! IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: Why do too much estrogen and too little estrogen both cause weight gain? How fragrances and plastic contribute to the imbalance between estrogen and progesterone. How changing to organic tampons and pads, or using a Diva cup, can be a game-changer for women. Should women who have had a partial hysterectomy and are on HRT still check progesterone and testosterone levels and fast like a post-menopausal female? Dr. Tabatha shares her thoughts on plain estradiol versus Biest and Triest. Dr. Tabatha offers her recommendations for a healthy 48-year-old female with zero libido. What can a 17-year-old with high testosterone do to get her testosterone level within the normal range? Is there a biological or mindset issue at play if you never feel full and always want to eat, irrespective of how healthy or satisfying the foods you eat are? The benefits of fasting. What can we do to support our pelvic joints? How do our hormones affect our skin? Memorable Quotes: "Fasting is actually one of the most powerful ways that we can heal our bodies, and our body knows that, but our brain doesn't know that. We're trained to think that we should eat all the time and eating is what heals us. Eating is what nourishes us. But honestly, I don't think a lot of women realize it actually requires energy to eat and digest and break down food." – Dr. Tabatha Barber "Once you hit menopause, it goes downhill a lot quicker. You know, like you said, the aging process, especially if you're not on hormone replacement therapy, the disease processes start to set in. But fasting is something that really you can utilize to slow those processes down and even reverse diabetes, reverse autoimmune conditions, because you're healing your gut, you're healing your entire body." – Dr. Tabatha Barber Links Mentioned: FREE E-book "A Woman's Guide to Kick-Ass Sleep": https://bit.ly/4cblYcT Connect with Dr. Tabatha Barber: Website: https://drtabatha.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thegutsygynecologist/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DrTabatha TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thegutsygynecologist YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@TheGutsyGynecologist Connect with Betty Murray: Living Well Dallas Website: https://www.livingwelldallas.com/ Hormone Reset Website: https://hormonereset.net/ Betty Murray Website: https://www.bettymurray.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BettyAMurrayCN/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bettymurray_phd/
I'm thrilled to welcome the incredible Dr. Tabatha Barber, known as the Gutsy Gynecologist, to Well Beyond 40. Dr. Tabatha's journey is nothing short of inspiring—she became a mother at 17, dropped out of high school, and overcame immense challenges to become a renowned medical doctor and functional gynecologist. Her story is a testament to perseverance and faith, offering a powerful message to women in their 40s and beyond who are navigating their own life transitions. Dr. Tabatha shares her personal experience with menopause and how it has informed her compassionate approach to patient care. She emphasizes the importance of understanding hormone balance and addresses common myths and misconceptions about hormone replacement therapy (HRT). As someone who has treated thousands of patients and gone through menopause herself, Dr. Tabatha brings a wealth of real-world experience and practical advice. Her unique combination of conventional and functional medicine allows her to provide holistic care that truly meets the needs of women in midlife. One key takeaway from our conversation is Dr. Tabatha's emphasis on the critical role of estrogen in women's health. She debunks the long-standing fear surrounding HRT and highlights the significant benefits of hormone therapy, such as improved heart health, bone density, and overall vitality. Dr. Tabatha's insights are backed by her thorough understanding of medical research and her firsthand experience, making her advice both credible and relatable. A particularly powerful moment in our discussion is when Dr. Tabatha recounts her own sudden drop in estrogen levels and the profound impact it had on her mood and well-being. This personal story underscores the importance of recognizing and addressing hormonal changes with appropriate medical support, rather than resorting to antidepressants which can exacerbate symptoms. For actionable advice and a deeper understanding of how to navigate hormonal changes during menopause, be sure to listen to the full episode. Real talk: Hormonal health and weight management may feel like an uphill battle...but do you believe it's possible for YOU? If not, it's time to start. And you can do this by looking at your symptoms (such as weight gain) not as a sign of betrayal from your body but rather your body trying to communicate with you. In fact, this is exactly what Dr. Tabatha Barber, the incredibly talented and brilliant functional medicine doctor/podcaster/author, explained so beautifully during our discussion (which I'm so EXCITED to share with you.) In this episode, you'll learn how to optimize hormonal health (in a way that positively impacts your body and mind), the importance of fasting with gut health, and how overexercising is impacting your body. We also touch on the connection between the body and mind and how faith and spirituality may be the missing piece to achieving your health goals. Most Christians know that Jesus talks about fasting in the Gospels, but many of us don't have a regular practice of fasting or even understand it. Dr. Tabatha was a conventionally trained OB/GYN struggling with her own health when she went back to study functional medicine. She realized that fasting is not only a spiritual discipline, but it is a superpower when it comes to our physical health and mental well-being. Dr. Tabatha Barber is the host of the The Gutsy Gynecologist Podcast, a triple board certified physician, and an expert in hormones, gut health, and weight loss. She teaches her patients and followers to meditate on Scripture as a way to connect with God in their health journeys. “Your body has an innate ability to heal.” - Dr. Tabatha BarberFor many people living a typical Western lifestyle, high levels of stress have become a chronic issue. But while your mind might feel like you're handling that overactive life, your physiology can't. Your body responds with a chemical reaction whenever you're in a stressful, sympathetic state. We must take responsibility for our daily activities since they directly impact our health. That means being more mindful of how we live and recognizing that we have way more control over our health than we might think.Today, I'm joined by Dr. Tabatha Barber to talk about how fasting and faith can help shift your body into a parasympathetic state. Dr. Barber believes that when you're eating around the clock, your body doesn't get the chance to heal as much as it could, and by fasting, you can divert those resources to where they need to go.In this conversation, Dr. Barber and I discuss her insights on how gut inflammation can affect conditions like endometriosis, the role of gut bacteria in estrogen metabolism, the impact of fasting on adrenal function, why fasting can be beneficial for thyroid and autoimmune conditions, why she believes in integrating spirituality and mindfulness in health and wellness, and more.
