What does it actually mean to "trust life" — especially when life is handing you something genuinely hard? In this Meditation Party episode (originally aired in 2024), Dan, Sebene Selassie, and Jeff Warren dig into that question from multiple angles: as a personal mantra, a philosophical stance, and a daily practice. Plus: listener questions on rumination, work-life balance, and the eternal napping-vs.-meditating debate. "Trust Life" vs. "This Is the Curriculum" — Sebene shares the origin of her tattoo and what the mantra has meant through years of health challenges.  The three timescales of practice — Jeff breaks down how meditation works in the moment, over months and years, and across the arc of a whole life. The third one is where things get interesting. Obsessive thinking / rumination — Practical tools from all three, including one from Sebene involving a trampoline, and one from a clinical psychologist that will make you feel ridiculous in the best way. Sebene Selassie describes herself as a "writer, teacher, and immigrant-weirdo." She teaches meditation on the ten percent happier app and is the author of a great book called You Belong. She's based in Brooklyn.  Jeff Warren is also a writer and a meditation teacher. He and Dan co-wrote the book, Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics. He also hosts the Consciousness Explorers podcast. He's based in Toronto.  Related episodes:  How to Stay Calm No Matter What's Happening | Sebene Selassie and Jeff WarrenScience-Based Tools for When You're Stressed, Obsessed, or Overthinking | Dr. Jenny Taitz Get the 10% with Dan Harris app hereSign up for Dan's free newsletter hereFollow Dan on social: Instagram, TikTokSubscribe to our YouTube Channel To advertise on the show, contact sales@advertisecast.com or visit https://advertising.libsyn.com/10HappierwithDanHarris

In the before times, I would have been hostile to meditation and mindfulness. I didn't have time for it, I wanted the quick cure, the fix and no B.S. I had stuff to do and no time for body symptom nonsense. I had to be karmically convinced to change my mind.  Hard lessons. Embarrassing lessons. But I came to understand the lesson is repeated until you learn.   Meditation might work for you. It might not. But give it a fair chance.  You might not be ready for it now. That is okay. But take a moment to learn about it, understand the potential benefits and then decide.    Resources Mentioned:  At the Penguin Random House website you can listen to an audio sample or read the introduction chapter of the book to get a sense of if it is right for you.   Bear with me, this is a little confusing. The Harris newsletter is on Substack. There you can access links to his podcast, meditations from notables in the field and other do-dads that you might be interested in. Mr. Harris also has a paid app called Happier Meditation. It is a subscription service starting at $99 a year.  For those that can afford the up front that come out to $10 a month or 27 cents per day.  There may be an option for those that have money issues. You should check out the website for more info.   Co-author Jeff Warren has a page on Substack where you can find his views and teachings about meditation, access audio meditation on a wide variety of topics and meditations that focus on ADHD issues.   Emergency Resources   The Trevor Project: Provides crisis support specifically for LGBTQ+ youth through phone (1-866-488-7386), text (START to 678-678), and online chat. Available 24/7. They also provide peer support and community.    Veterans Crisis Line: Call 988 and press 1, text 838255, or chat online. There are phone lines for those serving overseas. Visit the website to find the current status of the Veteran line and international calling options.    National Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741 for free, confidential support 24/7. This service operates independently of the 988 service. Harris is a former national news anchor for ABC News and is now the host of the 10% Happier podcast and author of 10% Happier and Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics. As he knows from experience, there's power in “Waking up to something fundamental, that the mind is out of control, and you don't want to be owned by it.” How do we break the pattern of being controlled by our thoughts? Mindfulness and self-awareness, he says, put “distance” between us and our “thoughts and urges and emotions,” enabling us to connect with ourselves and others with greater consciousness and clarity. In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Harris and host Matt Abrahams discuss how mindfulness can transform our communication, sharing strategies for deeper listening, responding versus reacting, and reflecting what others say back to them. “Relationships are the most important aspect of your happiness,” Harris says. “The quality of those connections goes up when you're less stuck in your own head.” Episode References: Dan Harris: https://www.fastersmarter.io/guests/dan-harris/ Dan's Books: http://fastersmarter.io/10-percent-happier https://fastersmarter.io/meditation-for-fidgety-skeptics https://www.fastersmarter.io/179-communication-happiness-wellbeing-finding-positive-in-negative-emotions/ https://www.fastersmarter.io/180-unlocking-your-future-self-communication-happiness-wellbeing/ https://www.fastersmarter.io/181-why-happiness-is-a-direction-not-a-destination-communication-happiness-wellbeing/ https://www.fastersmarter.io/182-stop-chasing-time-and-start-owning-it-communication-happiness-wellbeing/   Tickets are now on sale for a special live taping of the 10% Happier Podcast with guest Pete Holmes! Welcome to Round II of the Meditation Party. The feedback we got from our first episode was overwhelmingly positive, so we're going for it again. Meditation Party is an experiment we're running with a chattier format – more of a morning zoo vibe, but way deeper, of course. The real agenda here is to show that meditation doesn't have to be a solo death march; it is vastly enhanced by having friends. Dan's co-hosts in this episode are his two close friends: the great meditation teachers Sebene Selassie and Jeff Warren. Jeff also hosts the Consciousness Explorers podcast. In this episode, we talk to Jeff about what it's like to be a meditation teacher who has ADHD. And even if you don't have ADHD, there's a lot of practical value to this conversation, because we all have unruly minds, and Jeff has found some great ways to work with this condition. We also take listener questions, discussing topics like drugs. Specifically, psychedelics — and whether you're violating Buddhist precepts if you take them. We also talk about how frustrating it can be to repeatedly wake up from distraction in meditation. And finally, we have a segment talking about the stuff we're psyched about right now… in which Sebene sings for us. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a powerful practice that has been proven to effectively reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. But, while CBT can help bring us relief in the short term, it doesn't always create lasting change. That's why many mental health professionals are now combining CBT with another technique - mindfulness. By combining the two practices, we can start to create long-term improvements in our behavior, thoughts, and attitudes. Here to discuss research-based practices from his recently published book, Mindful Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, A Simple Path to Healing, Hope and Peace, is best-selling author and psychologist, Seth Gillihan. Seth offers a model of fresh and practical strategies that build upon traditional techniques of CBT to transcend our capacity to control negative thinking and take the right steps to live in the present and enjoy life. Tune in to learn how these powerful practices can unlock a new path to healing. Listen and Learn: Seth's experience sharing so much of his personal mental health struggle in his book What mindfulness can do to help transcend the limitations of cognitive behavioral therapy Why mindfulness has lost its essence and how we can use mindfulness in a way that's beneficial An introduction to mindfulness for someone who might be resistant  Acceptance vs. passivity Seth's thoughts on psychiatric medication as a form of mental health treatment The relationship between cognitive behavioral therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy Resources: Learn more about Seth here: https://sethgillihan.com/ Check out Seth's podcast: https://sethgillihan.com/podcasts/ Grab your copy of all our favorite books at bookshop.org/shop/offtheclockpsych, including Yael's new book, Work, Parent, Thrive! Heads up: Amanda and I cover a lot of ground in this episode. We're talking life-altering events, massive achievements (like climbing Mount Kilimanjaro!), and even an impromptu concert mid-podcast! To me, the most impressive thing of all is how Amanda has stayed true to herself and grounded in her personal values through it all. If you've ever wondered what deep breaths and clear intentions could possibly help you do, this episode will blow your damn mind. Prepare to be inspired!Can't-Miss Moments From This Episode:Amanda's first week as CEO was about as challenging as it gets – payroll issues, software troubles, and even a lawsuit! Instead of pretending she had all the answers, she asked the questions that showed her staff what she was capable of and handled herself like a TRUE boss.  “We're climbing Kilimanjaro Monday, wanna come?” How a whirlwind trip (and one of the toughest physical challenges of her life) gave Amanda the faith and perspective to face any challenge coming her way. You don't need to climb a mountain to use this strategy! Everyone has transferable skills to help them succeed… EVERYONE. To prove that point, Amanda and I regale you with tales from our musician days. We'll show you how filling tip jars and walking on your hands helped us build successful businesses. What you focus on is what you attract more of, so what are you attracting when you're obsessively thinking, “Can't mess it up, can't let them down”? Amanda shares how shaving her head helped her let go of the pressure of maintaining her father's legacy.  Why the class I hated most in grad school wound up becoming my favorite (and the one that taught me the most) 10+ years after the fact. I reveal how a class assignment with ZERO instructions forced me to drop impossible standards, take massive action, and generate truly surprising results. This one is jam-packed full of advice. Don't miss out - listen now!Amanda's Bio:Amanda Holmes is the CEO of Chet Holmes International (CHI) which has worked with over 250,000 businesses worldwide. At age 24, she inherited her father's multi-million-dollar enterprise, which specializes in helping companies double their sales. Amanda has merged her father's proven process with her own forward-thinking ideas to connect the old-school sales process with hybrid online and offline instant gratification short attention span we see of consumers today. Her success has made it clear that she was born to lead. In the first two years of taking helm of the company, Amanda increased leads by 1176%, and doubled coaching clients two years in a row. Since then, Amanda has continued to scale the company making an impact worldwide with continued double-digit growth. Based on Chet Holmes' New York Times Best Seller The Ultimate Sales Machine, which was voted in the top 10 most recommended sales books of all time, Amanda's mission is to teach the last and most important lesson that her father never got to reveal to radically change the lives of those passionate about success and sales. Resources and links mentioned:Amanda's siteAmanda's book: The Ultimate Sales MachineMeditation for Fidgety Skeptics by Dan Harris10% Happier by Dan HarrisCome kick ass with me:Permission to Kick Ass websiteAngie's Facebook PageAngie on InstaAngie on YouTubeDownload this episode

Caitlin started her entrepreneurial journey at a young age and dove right into the deep end. She was successful (to the tune of increasing her company's social media following from 18,000 to 500,000 in just three years), but her days were filled with the constant noise of social media and that didn't leave much left for herself or her loved ones. But Caitlin didn't run from her shadows… she embraced them. In the process, she learned one of the most valuable skills any entrepreneur can have — how to navigate yourself. Listen now. Can't-Miss Moments From This Episode:How do you wrap up and wind down from your workday? Here's what your evening routine is telling you about your business  “That's a fun Reel! So is that one. And that one. And that one. I share the “aha” moment that changed my approach to being honest and kind at the same time.   Looking for a coach? Caitlin shares the hard lesson she learned in figuring out a coach was all wrong for her. That experience got me fired up and a little bit ranty (warning — F bombs coming your way). What on earth do a neighbor's late-night bathroom conversations and a night owl boyfriend have to do with business? Here's what Caitlin and I learned about peace and the illusion of control, and how it's made us much better (and well-rested!) entrepreneurs This one is jam-packed full of advice. I’m going to go ahead and say it: this is one of my favorite interviews I’ve ever done to date! You definitely need an open mind for this one. We’re talking about how a breakthrough technology could change the way we manage, treat, and actually fix things like anxiety, treatment-resistant depression, PTSD, and other conditions. I’m here with Dr. David Rabin, the chief innovation officer, co-founder and co-inventor at Apollo Neuroscience. Apollo is the first wearable system to improve focus, sleep, and access to meditative states by delivering gentle layered vibrations to the skin. Since Dr. Rabin has also spent the last 10 years studying the impact of chronic stress in humans, I figure he’s a great person to also brainstorm with about ways to improve your own sleep, your children’s sleep, and your heart rate variability, which is one of the things most linked to health. Episode Highlights With David Rabin Why Dr. Rabin became so interested in mental health and the topic of stress in particular The single biggest factor in any type of recovery and healing How he figured out a way to “trick” the body into feeling safe What heart rate variability (HRV) is and why we are coming to know it as an important health marker The risks associated with low HRV… and ways to raise it Why pyschedelics might be the answer for stopping PTSD and other pyschiatric conditions for good MDMA and what it does for the brain and the emotions What the FDA trials show so far about these controversial medicines How the Apollo wearable balances the nervous system in real time (without drugs!) He’s also the author of 10% Happier, a New York Times bestseller, and went on to launch the 10% Happier podcast and app by the same name. His new book is Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics and I just loved the name because I’ll admit when I try to meditate that’s exactly how I feel. I read the book and I can’t wait to jump into today. Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics (or, How to Meditate When You Can’t Sit Still) Like most of my guests, Dan Harris is where he is today because of a personal health crisis. Many of us know what it’s like to struggle with anxiety and maybe have even experienced a panic attack (myself included), but I’m pretty sure none of us can say it happened on live national television. Dan describes what happened to him that day: I was overtaken by this big bolt of fear. My heart was racing, my palms were sweating, my mouth dried up, my lungs seized up, I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t talk and I had to quit right in the middle of my little newscast. Years later, he’s turned that paralyzing experience into a platform to help others. Dan’s message is that meditation isn’t just for yogis and Buddhists, but a practical health habit that helps us see and understand our thoughts and emotions. If you’re like me and are reluctant to sit still and do “nothing” (but know it would be good if you could), this episode is for you! In This Episode You’ll Learn the very personal (and very public) crisis that inspired the 10% Happiness project why Dan decided to give meditation a try (even though he thought it was bologna) the physical health benefits of meditation why meditation isn’t just for religious people how to handle boredom while meditating tips for wanna-be meditators why meditation is not “doing nothing” how much meditation a day you need to get the benefits (how does one minute sound?!) and more!
