Welcome to Round II of the Meditation Party. The feedback we got from our first episode was overwhelmingly positive, so we're going for it again. Meditation Party is an experiment we're running with a chattier format – more of a morning zoo vibe, but way deeper, of course. The real agenda here is to show that meditation doesn't have to be a solo death march; it is vastly enhanced by having friends. Dan's co-hosts in this episode are his two close friends: the great meditation teachers Sebene Selassie and Jeff Warren. Sebene Selassie is based in Brooklyn and describes herself as a “writer, teacher, and immigrant-weirdo.” She teaches meditation on the Ten Percent Happier app and is the author of a great book called, You Belong. Jeff Warren is based in Toronto and is also a writer and meditation teacher who co-wrote the book, Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics with Dan Harris. Jeff also hosts the Consciousness Explorers podcast. In this episode, we talk to Jeff about what it's like to be a meditation teacher who has ADHD. And even if you don't have ADHD, there's a lot of practical value to this conversation, because we all have unruly minds, and Jeff has found some great ways to work with this condition. We also take listener questions, discussing topics like drugs. Specifically, psychedelics — and whether you're violating Buddhist precepts if you take them. We also talk about how frustrating it can be to repeatedly wake up from distraction in meditation. And finally, we have a segment talking about the stuff we're psyched about right now… in which Sebene sings for us. Psychologists Off The Clock: A Psychology Podcast About The Science And Practice Of Living Well

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a powerful practice that has been proven to effectively reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. But, while CBT can help bring us relief in the short term, it doesn't always create lasting change. That's why many mental health professionals are now combining CBT with another technique - mindfulness. By combining the two practices, we can start to create long-term improvements in our behavior, thoughts, and attitudes. Here to discuss research-based practices from his recently published book, Mindful Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, A Simple Path to Healing, Hope and Peace, is best-selling author and psychologist, Seth Gillihan. Seth offers a model of fresh and practical strategies that build upon traditional techniques of CBT to transcend our capacity to control negative thinking and take the right steps to live in the present and enjoy life. Tune in to learn how these powerful practices can unlock a new path to healing.  Listen and Learn: Seth's experience sharing so much of his personal mental health struggle in his book What mindfulness can do to help transcend the limitations of cognitive behavioral therapy Why mindfulness has lost its essence and how we can use mindfulness in a way that's beneficial An introduction to mindfulness for someone who might be resistant  Acceptance vs. passivity Seth's thoughts on psychiatric medication as a form of mental health treatment The relationship between cognitive behavioral therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy Resources: Learn more about Seth here: https://sethgillihan.com/ Check out Seth's podcast: https://sethgillihan.com/podcasts/ Grab your copy of all our favorite books at bookshop.org/shop/offtheclockpsych, including Yael's new book, Work, Parent, Thrive! Heads up: Amanda and I cover a lot of ground in this episode. We're talking life-altering events, massive achievements (like climbing Mount Kilimanjaro!), and even an impromptu concert mid-podcast! To me, the most impressive thing of all is how Amanda has stayed true to herself and grounded in her personal values through it all. If you've ever wondered what deep breaths and clear intentions could possibly help you do, this episode will blow your damn mind. Prepare to be inspired!Can't-Miss Moments From This Episode:Amanda's first week as CEO was about as challenging as it gets – payroll issues, software troubles, and even a lawsuit! Instead of pretending she had all the answers, she asked the questions that showed her staff what she was capable of and handled herself like a TRUE boss.  “We're climbing Kilimanjaro Monday, wanna come?” How a whirlwind trip (and one of the toughest physical challenges of her life) gave Amanda the faith and perspective to face any challenge coming her way. You don't need to climb a mountain to use this strategy! Everyone has transferable skills to help them succeed… EVERYONE. To prove that point, Amanda and I regale you with tales from our musician days. We'll show you how filling tip jars and walking on your hands helped us build successful businesses. What you focus on is what you attract more of, so what are you attracting when you're obsessively thinking, “Can't mess it up, can't let them down”? Amanda shares how shaving her head helped her let go of the pressure of maintaining her father's legacy.  Why the class I hated most in grad school wound up becoming my favorite (and the one that taught me the most) 10+ years after the fact. I reveal how a class assignment with ZERO instructions forced me to drop impossible standards, take massive action, and generate truly surprising results. This one is jam-packed full of advice. Don't miss out - listen now!Amanda's Bio:Amanda Holmes is the CEO of Chet Holmes International (CHI) which has worked with over 250,000 businesses worldwide. At age 24, she inherited her father's multi-million-dollar enterprise, which specializes in helping companies double their sales. Amanda has merged her father's proven process with her own forward-thinking ideas to connect the old-school sales process with hybrid online and offline instant gratification short attention span we see of consumers today. Her success has made it clear that she was born to lead. In the first two years of taking helm of the company, Amanda increased leads by 1176%, and doubled coaching clients two years in a row. Since then, Amanda has continued to scale the company making an impact worldwide with continued double-digit growth. Based on Chet Holmes' New York Times Best Seller The Ultimate Sales Machine, which was voted in the top 10 most recommended sales books of all time, Amanda's mission is to teach the last and most important lesson that her father never got to reveal to radically change the lives of those passionate about success and sales. Resources and links mentioned:Amanda's siteAmanda's book: The Ultimate Sales MachineMeditation for Fidgety Skeptics by Dan Harris10% Happier by Dan HarrisCome kick ass with me:Permission to Kick Ass websiteAngie's Facebook PageAngie on InstaAngie on YouTubeDownload this episode

But Caitlin didn't run from her shadows… she embraced them. In the process, she learned one of the most valuable skills any entrepreneur can have — how to navigate yourself. It is very easy to think about your meditation practice as being quarantined to those minutes when you're dutifully sitting down with your eyes closed. But actually the point is to turn your whole life into a practice. Our guest Jeff Warren has a very broad, capacious understanding of the concept of practice. There's formal meditation practice, but also: movement practice, work practice, relationship practice, sleep practice, art practice, and more. It's really about the goal, which few of us will ever fully attain, of turning everything you do into something intentional and illuminating.Jeff Warren is a frequent guest and good friend to the Ten Percent Happier podcast and app. He co-wrote a book with Dan called Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics. My guest today is Emily Fletcher, founder of Ziva Meditation and author of the best-selling book Stress Less. Emily really caught my attention when we were chatting at an event about meditation. Meditating has never been the easiest thing for me, but something she said that day stuck with me. She said we meditate not to get good at meditation, but to get good at life. And that’s when I started actually wanting to learn to clear my mind and sit and do “nothing” for a while! Emily teaches leaders at Apple, Google, and Harvard Business School how to meditate… the question is, can she teach this Type-A mom? Episode Highlights on Ziva Meditation How a certain meditation technique can be 5x as restful as sleep for the brain Why one of the top doctors in the US says 15 minutes of meditation gives him an extra three hours of productivity a day The difference between meditation and mindfulness Why clearing the mind isn’t the point (oops!) How meditation can improve sleep, sex, and immune function Ways to incorporate meditation with kids for better sleep and calmer interactions The way terrible questions lead to terrible answers… and the ones to stop asking yourself internally And more! Join Andrew and Jeff Warren for a warm-hearted, playful, and personal tour of meditation, lucid dreaming, and consciousness. The discussion begins with a look at Jeff's book The Head Trip, and his personal experiences related to research for the book. Jeff talks about “the silo brain,” and how beliefs prematurely foreclose our contact with reality. The conversation then turns to hypnosis, the power of narratives, and the story lines we constantly tell ourselves to create the illusion of certainty – and ego itself. The “awakened ones,” in this regard, are also the “de-hypnotized ones.” We succumb to trances of our own making, and suffer the consequences of buying into our storylines.Jeff then talks about “good art vs bad art,” and how good art brings you into a type of trance to wake you up from trance altogether. The discussion peppers in a host of obstacles on the path – like ADD, bi-polar disorder, and wind (prana) disorders – and how obstacles are the path if we relate to them properly. The need to pace ourselves, to titrate challenging experiences, and to practice maitri  (loving kindness towards ourselves) is a key to progress on the path. The relationship of absolute and relative aspects of the path is discussed, and the importance of finding “the middle way.” Jeff then shares how hyper-lucid dreams were the most transformative experiences of his life, and also his experience with liminal dreaming (hypnogogic and hypnopompic states of consciousness). The conversation closes with a look at synchronicities, meaning, and how we can replace karma with auspicious coincidence. Jeff concludes with his “desert island” tip, or his irreducible instruction. With his rapid-fire intellect, relentless humor, and good heart, you will see why Jeff is such a beloved force in the world of meditation, and its application in the modern world. --Jeff Warren is a meditation instructor and journalist, celebrated for his dynamic and accessible style of teaching. He is co-author of The New York Times bestselling Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics, author of The Head Trip – a travel guide to sleeping, dreaming and waking – and founder of The Consciousness Explorers Club, a nonprofit meditation adventure group based in Toronto. His mission is to empower people to take responsibility for their own mental health, through the realistic, intelligent and sometimes irreverent exploration of meditation and personal growth practices.Jeff has taught meditation to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, US Army cadets, Arizona cops, Google executives, distractible teens, suspicious journalists, burned-out caregivers, formerly- incarcerated youth, and every other conceivable demographic of freethinker, including squirmy six- year old kids. He tries to do this in a way that's rigorous and clear and adventurous. He is passionate about democratizing and de-stigmatizing meditation and other mental health practices, and is honest and very funny about being a meditation teacher – a a supposed paragon of mental health – who struggles with both ADD and bipolar disorder. Jeff talks refreshingly about what is realistic in a practice – what traits and behaviors we can change, and also what traits and behaviors we can't change. His core subject is what it actually looks looks like for each of us to become our own teachers and mental heath authorities.Dubbed the “Meditation MacGyver”, Jeff's charismatic meditations in the Ten Percent Happier app were listened to by over 150,000 individuals in 2018. He has appeared on Good Morning America, ABC's Nightline, The Joe Rogan Experience and other popular media outlets. I’m going to go ahead and say it: this is one of my favorite interviews I’ve ever done to date! You definitely need an open mind for this one. We’re talking about how a breakthrough technology could change the way we manage, treat, and actually fix things like anxiety, treatment-resistant depression, PTSD, and other conditions. I’m here with Dr. David Rabin, the chief innovation officer, co-founder and co-inventor at Apollo Neuroscience. Apollo is the first wearable system to improve focus, sleep, and access to meditative states by delivering gentle layered vibrations to the skin. Since Dr. Rabin has also spent the last 10 years studying the impact of chronic stress in humans, I figure he’s a great person to also brainstorm with about ways to improve your own sleep, your children’s sleep, and your heart rate variability, which is one of the things most linked to health. Episode Highlights With David Rabin Why Dr. Rabin became so interested in mental health and the topic of stress in particular The single biggest factor in any type of recovery and healing How he figured out a way to “trick” the body into feeling safe What heart rate variability (HRV) is and why we are coming to know it as an important health marker The risks associated with low HRV… and ways to raise it Why pyschedelics might be the answer for stopping PTSD and other pyschiatric conditions for good MDMA and what it does for the brain and the emotions What the FDA trials show so far about these controversial medicines How the Apollo wearable balances the nervous system in real time (without drugs!) Meditation, being one of the oldest contemplative practices, helps us turn inwards. Turning inwards helps us understand the nature of our minds better, deepens our self-awareness, brings us closer to some form of internal freedom, and, hopefully, equips us with the tools to overcome daily humanely challenges a bit better. Using the metaphor of an armada of vehicles, our guest today playfully describes the different forms of contemplative practices, he writes, "We have the Yogic fire-breathing Namaste monster truck...the spooky Zen hover craft...a Sufi flying carpet...a Catholic chain of bubble campers...and the boring Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction delivery vans." In this episode, we navigate the fraught territory of consciousness and meditation with Jeff Warren. Jeff is the Author of Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics along with Mr 10% Happier Dan Harris. He also wrote The Head Trip, a guidebook to waking, sleeping and dreaming. We decided to take a stab at some "deep end" questions that relate to practice. Jeff tells us what it has been like for him since coming out publicly about his personal struggles with ADD and bi-polar. He also shares his personal vision for the future of mental health. At the very end, he leaves us with a beautiful 10 minute guided mediation.   'Where Do You Feel It' Poem by Thal Mohammed Music by Hoiking Fung https://youtu.be/XNgE0-69YFA   Shownotes http://www.soulspacepodcast.com/2019/02/10/episode6/   Connect info@soulspacepodcast.com https://www.instagram.com/soulspacepod/ https://www.facebook.com/soulspacepod https://twitter.com/soulspacepod   About Adrian Choo & Thal Mohammed explore modern spirituality and life's profound questions with fellow seekers. Too busy to meditate? Can't turn off your brain? Curious about mindfulness but more comfortable in the gym? This podcast episode with Jeff Warren is for you.ABC News anchor Dan Harris used to think that meditation was for people who collect crystals, play Ultimate Frisbee, and use the word “namaste” without irony. After he had a panic attack on live television, he went on a strange and circuitous journey that ultimately led him to become one of meditation's most vocal public proponents. Harris found that meditation made him more focused and less yanked around by his emotions. According to his wife, it also made him less annoying. Science suggests that the practice can lower your blood pressure, mitigate depression and anxiety, and literally rewire key parts of the brain. So what's holding you back?In Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics, Harris and Jeff Warren, a masterful teacher and “Meditation MacGyver,” embark on a gonzo cross-country quest to tackle the myths, misconceptions, and self-deceptions that keep people from meditating. It is filled with game-changing and deeply practical meditation instructions—all of which are also available (for free) on the 10% Happier app. This book is a trip worth taking.Former journalist at CBC Radio's The Current and Ideas. Writer for The New York Times, The New Scientist, Discover and others. Two of these pieces – one on animal consciousness – won gold medals at the Canadian National Magazine Awards. In the early 2000s, Jeff began working on a book about the science and inner experience of waking, sleeping and dreaming. I’m here today with someone whose name and face will probably ring a bell. Dan Harris is an Emmy award-winning journalist and co-anchor of ABC’s Nightline and the weekend edition of Good Morning America. He’s also the author of 10% Happier, a New York Times bestseller, and went on to launch the 10% Happier podcast and app by the same name. His new book is Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics and I just loved the name because I’ll admit when I try to meditate that’s exactly how I feel. I read the book and I can’t wait to jump into today. Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics (or, How to Meditate When You Can’t Sit Still) Like most of my guests, Dan Harris is where he is today because of a personal health crisis. Many of us know what it’s like to struggle with anxiety and maybe have even experienced a panic attack (myself included), but I’m pretty sure none of us can say it happened on live national television. Dan describes what happened to him that day: I was overtaken by this big bolt of fear. My heart was racing, my palms were sweating, my mouth dried up, my lungs seized up, I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t talk and I had to quit right in the middle of my little newscast. Years later, he’s turned that paralyzing experience into a platform to help others. Dan’s message is that meditation isn’t just for yogis and Buddhists, but a practical health habit that helps us see and understand our thoughts and emotions. If you’re like me and are reluctant to sit still and do “nothing” (but know it would be good if you could), this episode is for you! In This Episode You’ll Learn the very personal (and very public) crisis that inspired the 10% Happiness project why Dan decided to give meditation a try (even though he thought it was bologna) the physical health benefits of meditation why meditation isn’t just for religious people how to handle boredom while meditating tips for wanna-be meditators why meditation is not “doing nothing” how much meditation a day you need to get the benefits (how does one minute sound?!) and more! Talking to Jeff Warren was like talking to my long-lost meditation friend who totally “got it.” His story about how meditation helped him notice the “neurotic ways he was in pain,” will help you understand the power of this practice at a deeper level. Some big takeaways from this episode include: 1. Everyone can experience the sacred dimension of practice no matter what your background is. 2. The most important equation all humans need to know is: SUFFERING = PAIN X RESISTANCE. 3. Teaching meditation to kids teaches “existence skills” - how to be more compassionate and sane.
