Jerry Colonna is a world-renowned executive coach, a former venture capitalist, and the co-founder and CEO of Reboot, an executive coaching firm that combines practical leadership development with deeper self-inquiry. With over 27 years of coaching experience, he has guided countless leaders through the challenges of scaling companies, building teams, and navigating the emotional complexities of leadership. Known for his radical-self-inquiry approach, Jerry helps leaders uncover the unconscious patterns that hold them back and empowers them to lead with authenticity, compassion, and clarity. In our conversation, we cover:1. A powerful question that unlocks self-awareness: “How have I been complicit in creating the conditions I say I don't want?”2. Jerry's foundational equation for leadership success: practical skills + radical self-inquiry + shared experiences = enhanced leadership and resilience3. Why teams most often fail (hint: it's not lack of talent or strategy)4. How busyness often masks deeper issues of self-worth5. Why a “growth mindset” can be problematic6. The importance of legacy and what it means to live a meaningful life7. The role of AI in self-inquiry and how tools like ChatGPT can help uncover blind spots8. An author, podcaster and entrepreneur Dan Harris (@danbharris) spent 21 years as an anchor and correspondent for ABC News, hosting such shows as Nightline and the weekend editions of Good Morning America. Dan has reported from all over the world covering wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and producing investigative reports in Haiti,Cambodia, and the Amazon. After having a nationally televised panic attack on Good Morning America, Dan discovered meditation and he went on to write the best selling book 10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That Actually Works--A True Story. This marked the beginning of Harris' transition from a media icon to a mindfulness expert. The book was a welcome contribution to the mindfulness movement, as it provided a way for meditation skeptics like Harris himself, to give the practice a shot. That first book led to the 10% Happier app, a second book and Dan's podcast, where he interviews celebrities, entrepreneurs, authors, scientists, and meditation teachers about how to do life better. That's half the story. In this episode, you'll hear Dan talk about how other people see you, and how that fits or doesn't fit with how you see yourself. That's another kind of self awareness and self discovery that is both painful —and a rare treasure —to get that information.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/firstpersonplural)

Could you imagine what it would be like to suffer a panic attack in front of five million people on live television? Journalist, author, and co-founder of 10% Happier, Dan Harris, was subjected to this terrifying experience as a news anchor on Good Morning America. Since this ordeal, he has embarked on a mission to encourage us to ask an important question: what is happiness, and how can we work towards it?  I've been following Dan's journey for a long time. His work really resonates with me and I have applied a lot of similar ideas in my own journey to happiness, specifically his advocacy for meditation, exercise, and developing healthy social habits to increase mindfulness. We dive deep into Buddhist concepts, the dangers of extrinsic comparison, the Hedonic Treadmill, rescuing the idea of ‘love’, and dealing with depression and anxiety. Despite a world of growing excess, we often still feel like we are missing something. Dan’s mission of encouraging more people to seriously consider happiness is something we need now more than ever.  His book, 10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That Actually Works, is available on Amazon and everywhere else. You can also find his meditation and wellness app, 10 Percent Happier, on the App Store and Google Play Store.

If she failed at something, she could just blame it on the situation. She became Editor-in-Chief of Women’s Day a week before the lockdown, so she didn’t get to meet her new team. On top of that, as her children became homeschooled, she needed to learn how to teach them. She sees herself as an expert problem solver, so she filled her book with tips, tricks, and strategies you can use in your day-to-day life. Meaghan trained herself to become fully-charged, so she knows anyone can do it. What Meaghan Learned While Writing Her Book She talks about meditation in her book and how it has undeniable power. At first, she thought meditation wasn’t for her, but when she got COVID, she found herself downloading a meditation app, laying in bed, and doing it for an hour. Awareness is key. According to Meaghan, back in fifth grade, she said she was the embodiment of negativity. In order to be happy, you have to do Happiness is not a state of being; it is a state of doing. How to Become Fully Charged and Where Energy Comes From When you’re depleted, you feel stuck, drained, with low energy and negative thoughts. On the other hand, being fully charged means building your energy reserves up so that when you feel down, you can power on through. Making one positive choice after the other is like depositing goodness in the energy bank, and having reserves to become fully charged and get fired up. It’s not about just looking at the bright side. It’s about looking at all sides and choosing the bright side in spite of everything else. You choose to move forward. Moving Past Hurdles in Life When her father died and she had to deal with that grief, she simply set out to find one thing that did not suck everyday. She called it operation. Since she could not lie in bed and hide under the covers, she had to get up and keep her children alive. It taught her to prioritize positivity. When you can seek out the good and put it front and center, you rewire your brain. After doing this, she automatically sees the silver lining in things without working hard for it. Embracing Integration and Connecting All the Parts of Your Life What work-life balance suggests is that all aspects of your life are always equal. For Meaghan, it’s all about synergy. She made her children a part of her work by showing them her office and the things that she does in her job. We need to recognize each other’s humanity in all situations. It seems like what’s causing unhappiness in work is the belief that work life is supposed to be separate from our personal lives. Letting Go of Control Letting go of control is usually scary and hard to do. It’s one of those things where you won’t know how good it feels until you’ve had a taste. When you have not become fully charged, or are not living a life filled with optimism and joy, it is easy to roll your eyes at the notion of it. You don’t need to have drastic changes in your life. You just have to use what you have right now to change your perspective, so you can restructure what you see in your life. Managing Everybody’s Energy Meaghan likes to lead with joy and fun. She’s the first on her team to say that they get to make magazines for a living—they are not curing cancer. She says if people can’t have fun while working, then they shouldn’t be working. When we were kids, we used to get stars and trophies for doing well. For people working now, where do they get validation? To achieve wellness, we need to feel accomplished in something. The bottomline is that you can never control what somebody is going to do. You can’t control their stress or their response to a situation—all you can do is protect yourself and emit positive energy. 5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode [12:30] “And that's what your fully-charged life is. It's a happiness toolkit. It's not even a happiness handbook. It's a happiness toolkit. And it's filled with these tricks and tips and strategies that allow you to weather any storm with optimism and grace.” [23:15] “But living fully charged means, okay, well, how do you build the energy reserves so that when you feel that crappy, you can power back up? Right? Because if you make a series of positive choices, it's like you're depositing goodness in the energy bank.” [26:06] “And when you're able to do that, when you're able to seek out the good and put it front and center, you rewire your brain.” [30:35] “I mean, the lines are blurring. Everything is changing. I mean, it's a new work world. That's absolutely for sure. And, I also think there are moments when it's important to, you know, kind of compartmentalize.” [35:37] “And I am the first person to say to my team on repeat, we get to make magazines for a living. We're not curing cancer. Like if we can't have fun doing this we shouldn't be working.” About Meaghan Meaghan B Murphy is an author, editor, on-air personality, lifestyle and health expert, influencer, a home-hack master, and a certified trainer. He is a meditator, yogi, and evangelizer of “authentic relating.” I was impressed by his presence, groundedness, and the intentional manner in which he spoke when we met about a year ago. MEDITATION WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE. A lot of us are suffering, and we don’t even realize it. We’re always on the move. We’re always doing. We’re balancing so many responsibilities. We don’t take time to quiet our minds so that we can start to understand what’s going on up there. That’s why meditation is so powerful. It allows you to get to the root of your problems instead of constantly fixing the symptoms. It’s like flossing your brain. Meditation will get all “gunk” out. On today’s episode of The School of Greatness, I’ve combined interviews with experts on meditation: Jay Shetty, Preethaji, Krishnaji, Dan Harris, and Andy Puddacomb. Jay Shetty is a former monk who was named in the Forbes 30 Under 30 Class of 2017 for being a game-changer and influencer in the world of Media. Jay’s daily show HuffPost Live #FollowTheReader, where he interviewed the likes of Russell Brand, Tim Ferriss and Deepak Chopra reached 1 million people daily. Jay aims to share knowledge at the pace we want entertainment, something he likes to call “making wisdom go viral.” He has created content for and partnered with Snapchat, Facebook, National Geographic, Nasdaq and HuffPost to name a few. Preethaji is a modern day Indian philosopher and sage who has co-founded along with her husband Krishnaji the O&O Academy (school to revolutionize and transform human thought), World Youth Change Makers (an elite community of youth redirecting the future of the world through a revolution in consciousness), and One Humanity Care (a Foundation working with the vision to uplift 10,000 villages in India). Dan Harris is correspondent for ABC News, an anchor for Nightline and co-anchor for the weekend edition of Good Morning America. Harris encourages the use of meditation, and his "10% Happier" podcasts are interviews with other meditators. Harris' book, 10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That Really Works – a True Story, was published in March 2014. Andy Puddicombe is a meditation and mindfulness expert. An accomplished presenter and writer, Andy is the voice of all things Headspace. In his early twenties, midway through a university degree in Sports Science, Andy made the unexpected decision to travel to The Himalayas to study meditation instead. These masters explain the importance of meditation, the common misconceptions, and the science behind it all. It’s a lot more straightforward than you might think. So get ready to learn all about meditation on Episode 812. Some Questions I Ask: What’s the biggest lesson you learned from being a monk (5:45) What’s the intention you set every morning? (10:45) Why do we focus so much on suffering when it only hurts us? (21:10) What’s the importance of a spiritual vision? (22:35) Why is meditation so powerful? MEDITATION WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE. Why do we set aside time to take care of our bodies, but not our minds? You need to work out your mental health just as often as you work out your physical health. Leader Manager Coach Podcast

Welcome to another episode of the The Leader Manager Coach Podcast. On this episode of Leader, Manager, Coach Rob tackles the subject of Ego. How to fight your ego and build character and develop strength and humility. Ego is notoriously hard to define, but very easy to spot. Ego can mean an outsized sense of self importance, a malignant self absorption or an inherently entitled person or someone who believes they are better than others. Ego creates a lack of empathy a lack of humility and makes teamwork very difficult or even impossible. Understand the pride before the fall syndrome, and if things are going well remember to ground yourself as your own success is not down solely to yourself. Rob touches on why you should not to take yourself too seriously and learn to lighten up, and you will become a much better person. Discover how to channel your ego in the right way, to improve yourself and be humble. Learn how renowned coaches such as Bill Belichick use ego to benefit and channel it into a larger purpose, to win and why It is not about the narcissistic self. Rob discusses the need to fall in love with the process and love the plato, how to stop seeking constant results and understand that the process is what will elevate your growth. Growth doesn’t occur in the presentation of an ever growing line. But also be wary of swelling your ego, as it only identifies individuals and is destructive to the unified approach of team, we all know is successful. If we can control and manage our egos we will all be in a better place. KEY TAKEAWAYS As soon as your ego gets in the way, you loose. Ego is your inability to control your emotions. In Order to achieve success, take your eyes off of yourself and onto someone else. Serve others and build your value. It’s not how you win that counts, it’s the win itself, the result. Zone in and achieve. What we can’t do is master a physical skill at a drop of a hat, we live in a world of instantaneous information and gratification you have to learn to cherish misery. There’s nothing wrong with being the best that you can be, become egoless and achieve to the best of your abilities. BEST MOMENTS “Ego is an evil thing, humility though is the way to build confidence and ego is a hugely dangerous thing in this sport” Frank Shamrock ‘Boxing Source’ “Your worst enemy is your Ego” John Frusciante “Your ego can become and obstacle to your work, if you start believing in your greatness, it is the death of your creativity.” Mariana Abramovic “Your eyes are fixed on the world, not on yourself or your ego” Robert Green “You won’t make it far if you have a big ego” Greg Jackson “The best fighters are the most humble, your ego will keep you out of the zone” Sam Sheridan “Perfectionism is the ego’s wicked demand, using pleasure instead of process” “High level leaders are self effacing individuals who deflect adulation, yet who have an almost stoik resolve to do whatever it takes to make their organisation great.” Jim Collins “Identifying personal ego is soaring off the branch upon which we sit, and getting increasingly anxious about the impending crash.” “When you don’t dig your heels in and let your ego into entrenched positions, from which you mount vigorous and irrational defences you can navigate life in a much more agile way and humility for me has been a great relief.” Dan Harris VALUABLE RESOURCES Ryan Holiday - Ego Is The Enemy - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ego-Enemy-Ryan-Holiday/dp/1591847818 Robert Green - The 50th Law - https://www.amazon.co.uk/50th-Law-Robert-Greene-Collection/dp/1846680794 George Leonard - Mastery: The Keys to Success And Long-Term Fulfillment - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mastery-Success-Long-Term-Fulfillment-Plume/dp/0452267560 Marvin Hagler vs Alan Minter Cal Newport - Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Deep-Work-Focused-Success-Distracted/dp/0349411905 Captain D Micha Abrashoff - It's Your Ship: Management Techniques from the Best Damn Ship in the Navy -  https://www.amazon.co.uk/Its-Your-Ship-Management-Techniques/dp/1594831963 Dan Harris - 10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That Actually Works - https://www.amazon.co.uk/10-Happier-Reduced-Self-Help-Actually/dp/1444799045 Daniel James Brown - The Boys in the Boat - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Boys-Boat-Daniel-James-Brown/dp/1447210980 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Ryles is a UEFA qualified coach with a League Managers Association qualification and a science and medicine background. I’m here today with someone whose name and face will probably ring a bell. Dan Harris is an Emmy award-winning journalist and co-anchor of ABC’s Nightline and the weekend edition of Good Morning America. He’s also the author of 10% Happier, a New York Times bestseller, and went on to launch the 10% Happier podcast and app by the same name. His new book is Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics and I just loved the name because I’ll admit when I try to meditate that’s exactly how I feel. I read the book and I can’t wait to jump into today. Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics (or, How to Meditate When You Can’t Sit Still) Like most of my guests, Dan Harris is where he is today because of a personal health crisis. Many of us know what it’s like to struggle with anxiety and maybe have even experienced a panic attack (myself included), but I’m pretty sure none of us can say it happened on live national television. Dan describes what happened to him that day: I was overtaken by this big bolt of fear. My heart was racing, my palms were sweating, my mouth dried up, my lungs seized up, I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t talk and I had to quit right in the middle of my little newscast. Years later, he’s turned that paralyzing experience into a platform to help others. Dan’s message is that meditation isn’t just for yogis and Buddhists, but a practical health habit that helps us see and understand our thoughts and emotions. If you’re like me and are reluctant to sit still and do “nothing” (but know it would be good if you could), this episode is for you! In This Episode You’ll Learn the very personal (and very public) crisis that inspired the 10% Happiness project why Dan decided to give meditation a try (even though he thought it was bologna) the physical health benefits of meditation why meditation isn’t just for religious people how to handle boredom while meditating tips for wanna-be meditators why meditation is not “doing nothing” how much meditation a day you need to get the benefits (how does one minute sound?!) and more! When are you going to tackle your bucket list? My guest today is Alan Worden, a serial entrepreneur focused on leisure-seeking Baby Boomers who founded Scout Real Estate Capital. For Alan, there came a time when he realized it may be now or never if he wanted to chase his dreams. In 1999, Alan asked 10 trusted friends and advisors for advice. He asked each if it was a good idea to drop prosperous careers and go sailing from the U.S. to New Zealand with his wife. Independently, each of them said “If you can do it, do it now. It's never going to get any easier.” That was in 1999. Soon after that, Worden spent exactly 365 days sailing to New Zealand in an Everest-sized adventure you'll love to hear about. (Including a brush with death I won't spoil for you.) He spent all that time and most of his money to make it happen. For him, it was as much about conquering fear as it was about a bucket list item to cross off. See, Alan's biggest fear is the ocean. And he crossed 18,000 miles of it in his “do it now” year. The lessons he learned on that sailboat have carried him to new heights in life and in this episode you'll learn just what they are. If you think you could make your dreams happen and something is holding you back, this episode is for you. If you have trouble facing your fears but want to get better at it, listen to this conversation with Alan. And if you just want to hear about a real-life adventure that changed one life for the better, click play in the player above to get started. In this episode, hear from Alan Worden how to ‘do it now' and more: Why the most influential family members aren't who you think. The critical difference between research and “need-search” A stunning piece of advice that came from an unlikely source. What will make the world care about your business. The paradigm shift that put Alan's life in high gear. Why you should be OK with sucking at some things. Meditation for cynics. The thing you might think that constitutes “the height of arrogance.” How to make your “worry quotient” go down—and fast. Why 95 percent of what you fear shouldn't scare you. Giving yourself a superpower. Episode 11 - The word on the street about getting YOU time In our final episode on getting some 'me-time' we turn to two books which I think you'll like. Both of these books are easy reads, clear and enjoyable. 10% Happier is more specific as it's primarily about how Dan found meditation could help cure his chattering voice, while How To Live a Good Life is broader looking at options across your life in general. Great reads, and if you prefer your resource in the form of something you CAN take into the bath, on the bus or places that you can't use on-line resource, then I thoroughly recommend giving them a try.  Some of the stuff in there is: What having a panic attack, live, on-air, in front of millions of people - sounds like How Dan Harris moved from that to changing his life Paying attention to that voice in your head, and then doing something about it Meditation - it's not just for hippies Showering, bolognaise and the weather The book 10% Happier - 10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That Actually Works - A True Story Why a kind sounding man, can give you powerful insights Jonathan Fields - explanation of why reading his book is a good idea Where to get a free chapter of the - How To Live a Good Life book As always, we're really grateful for your help in supporting this podcast. Tucker Max (@TuckerMax) is here to share some serious entrepreneurial wisdom (much of it geared toward you financial advisors out there). But Tucker's knowledge, stemming from his work both as an independent writer and at Book In A Box, is applicable to anybody planning to write a book or start a business in our ever-changing world.  Tucker is a super-successful writer and one of only three people to have three nonfiction books on the New York Times Bestseller List simultaneously. One of his greatest challenges, however, was co-founding and running his game-changing company Book In A Box. Book In A Box helps busy entrepreneurs, thought leaders, and professionals get a book out of their head and into the world where it can have a real impact. Tucker will be the first to tell you that starting a company (and then deciding to fire himself from being its CEO) has changed his perspective on business for the better. Tucker's straight-up storytelling and advice cuts through all the noise out there about what it means to be successful, to market, or to write. Don't miss this opportunity to learn some critical lessons from somebody who constantly challenges himself to be better at it all.  SHOW NOTES: How Tucker deliberately changed his social circles, activities, and self to meet a woman he'd like to marry. We are bringing Jason Seib of AltShift back to do a four part series of interviews to discuss the Four Pillars of Weight Loss in more detail. This is Part 1 where we focus on Stress Management. What is AltShift Diet? It’s a diet that was created after Jason lived in the Paleo world. Paleo makes people healthier, but doesn’t necessarily lead to fat loss. The AltShift Diet cycles fats, carbs and calories, and people are finding the it easy to follow. It is a fat loss protocol and people are achieving astonishing results. There is scientific research backing the diet protocol. The reached #1 on Fitness & Nutrition category in iTunes, and received Paleo Magazine’s Best of 2015 Award for Best Ebook. And the testimonials are amazing! Purchase Ebook Here   Four Pillars of Good Health and Fat Loss The following are the four pillars of fat loss. We will be dedicating one whole episode to each, so be sure to come back the next few weeks to listen in on discussion about the other pillars. Part I- Stress Part II- Sleep Part III- Nutrition Part IV- Exercise Not one is more important than the other. If one is missing, it can dismantle your goals.   The Effects of Stress Most of what Jason sees in his clients is based on their “heads” and the rest is on “body”. Most people believe that they don’t have stress as it relates to finances, relationships, kids, jobs, etc. But we live by an alarm clock and most of us couldn’t survive well if we lost our jobs today. These are stressors we’re not thinking about or conting on. They spike our cortisol throughout the day, which increases insulin and glucose, which then leads to storing fat. When you’re trying to lose weight, and do diet & exercise but don’t pay attention to stress, your cravings are through the roof.   How to Eliminate Stress You’ll have to know “it’s going to be difficult and will take work”. You will not be able to get rid of daily stress. What you do have control over is how you deal with it. As humans, we ruminate over things that happen throughout the day. If a car honks at you while you’re walking, you wonder why, then look at the car and remember you need to fix the transmission on yours, or maybe it’s time to get a new car, but you really can’t afford it right now and you can’t ask for a raise because your boss is not very kind or understanding, and you can’t leave because the convenience of working close to home is priceless, and you’re close to the kids school, etc….and the thoughts keep coming. Women do this more than men, by the way. What we need to do is get rational. Practice Mindfulness- Instead of  letting stressful facts and thoughts ruminate, that can lead to more negative and stressful thoughts, practice mindfulness through meditation. We’re not turning hippie and rubbing crystal here. Stay with us. Science and research shows that you can change your thoughts. Sit and take deep breathes. Focus on your breath. When your thoughts start to wander, which is normal and they will, catch yourself and focus on breathing again. You can train your mind to interrupt your thoughts and change to a new normal. It just takes practice. Do 5 minutes of meditation daily for a month. Even with no further instructions, you will see amazing results after a month. Clients have said “meditation is a game changer”. It has been proven to work and there is no need to do it for more than 10 minutes. Very doable! Jason has had clients that were finding little or very slow results in fat loss. Once they started meditating, they saw immediate results with better sleep, improved productivity at work, had more will power to avoid junk food and started losing weight. Calm, a meditation app- Jason likes this one because you can pick a background noise like waves or a stream, and reduce background noise during your meditation. He doesn’t particularly like the guided meditation it provides, prefers to do his own. The other great feature of this app is that it keeps a tally of the consecutive days you’ve meditated, providing an incentive to do it daily so you don’t break your streak. Time of day- It is best to schedule it in everyday at the same time so it becomes habitual. Whether it’s in the morning, or in the evening, as long as it’s at the same time every day. But if your schedule impedes doing it at the same time, that’s fine; it just becomes a habit when it’s done at the same time. 8 Minute Meditation Expanded: Quiet Your Mind. Change Your Life. This is a great book to get started with. It takes you through one week at a time and adds layers every week. It’s a small book of daily reading and can be done in 8 minutes. 10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That Actually Works–A True Story by Dan Harris. Dan Harris is a correspondent for ABC News and the co-anchor for the weekend edition of Good Morning America, and he shares his story with meditation. AltShift Diet Ebook– has a section on meditation where Jason created instructions on what to do without any confusion. Breathing Exercises- after you’ve done meditation a couple of times, you can take deep breathes wherever you are and whenever to help you center yourself. Listen to Fiction Books- they’ll help keep your mind from creating negative and stressful thoughts. Specially when driving in traffic. Figure out when and where you ruminate- and find what you can do to replace that, that won’t stress you out. Be in the moment, go for a walk, enjoy nature, etc.   You won’t be successful to eliminate stress if you don’t take care of the other 3 pillars: sleep, nutrition and exercise. More details on these pillars in upcoming episodes. Come back in the next few weeks to listen in on them. In the meantime, listen in on our first interview with Jason a few months back: Thinking Yourself Thin- Fact or Fiction with Jason Seib Jason’s Bio: Jason Seib is the creator of the popular AltShift Diet, the author of The Paleo Coach, co-host of the popular JASSA Podcast and AltShift Podcast, founder and co-owner of AltShift Fitness and Fat Loss, a successful small gym in the Portland, Oregon area, as well as founder and co-owner of JassaFIT.com, an on-line training site and community. He's the author of 10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That Actually Works -- A True Story, about a fidgety, skeptical newsman who reluctantly became a meditator. The Cheat Sheet:If you're like most people, your deceptive inner voice acts as a malevolent puppeteer -- and it doesn't have your best interests at heart. When trying to come to terms with this malevolent puppeteer, meditation is more effective (and much easier) than you probably think.Contrary to popular misconception, meditation is more than just thinking about nothing (that's reserved for Zen masters and dead people).Even those of us with short attention spans (like Dan Harris) can learn to focus for the nanoseconds it takes to meditate and use it to come to terms with our malevolent puppeteer. The mindfulness found through meditation is a way to view the contents of our mind with nonjudgmental remove -- there are verifiable, scientific results, and there's nothing woo about it.And so much more...Show notes at http://theartofcharm.com/podcast-episodes/dan-harris-10-percent-happier-episode-500/HELP US SPREAD THE WORD!If you dig the show, please subscribe in iTunes and write us a review! He self-medicated. He covered stories in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. He went to Iraq six or seven times. When he got back, he was depressed. He was 32 years old and had never touched hard drugs before. But it became the thing that made him feel better. Millions of people were watching. The red light was on. And right there, in the middle of his live segment, he had a panic attack. I'm going to tell you how to deal with stress. I'll tell you what works for me. But first, I want to tell you about my guest, Dan Harris. Dan is an anchor on "Good Morning America" and "Nightline."  He's also the No. 1 New York Times bestselling author of 10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That Actually Works - A True Story. After the book came out people had questions. So he also created an app called "10% Happier." It teaches users easy "judo moves" to have more creativity, feel less stress, and be happier.  It helps you surrender. Be self-aware. Focused. "The events that led up to my panic attack were a case study in mindlessness," Dan says. "Going to wars without thinking about the consequences, getting depressed and not knowing it and blindly self-medicating." I wanted to know what pushed him over the edge. "The one-word answer is cocaine," Dan says. "The more complicated answer is I arrived at ABC News when I was 28." He was insecure. He worked with big names like Diane Sawyer and Barbara Walters. He wanted to be successful. "My Jewish father has this expression, 'The price of security is insecurity.' I really embraced that," he says. The pressure never let up. He demanded more of himself. But why do we make it so hard for ourselves? Many people have gone through this slow-motion panic attack. Including me. It's the stress of daily living.  Something bad happens to you. You lose a job or get a divorce. Everyday wear and tear picks at you. Stress happens over time. And if you don't notice it, it builds. The voice in your head becomes meaner. Angrier. More resentful and regretful. Energy is wasted. Your creativity dies. Your idea muscle atrophies. And you're at the bottom of the funnel dreaming about retirement. But instead of imagining a better life later, retire. You can retire a little bit every day. Breathe. Feel your chest fall. That's retirement. It's a fantasy. I'm going to tell you how to make it real right now. But before I do, let me tell you what you'll get from today's podcast: a) Learn How to Have More Ideas Dan says, "When you ask, 'What is boredom like? What does this feel like? Where am I feeling it in my body? What's the taste of it in my mind?' That is curiosity." Curiosity produces creativity. And ideas. You'll learn how to make room for curiosity. b) Distance Yourself From Stress Dan teaches you how to notice stress and see your problems clearly. You'll learn to separate yourself from it. And relax. Essentially, you're becoming a scientist of your own inner reactions. A scientist is not his experiment. The same way humans are not their reactions and emotions to things. Those are separate. You'll learn how to separate yourself from stress.c) Be 10% Happier "First of all, 10% is just a joke. You can't quantify happiness," Dan says. "I came up with that as a bullshit answer to a friend." But being a little bit happier is better than being a little bit miserable. But you have to practice. You're practicing becoming aware of the angry voice that comes up and reacts. So you can be calm. Ok, now here's Dan's secret to dealing with stress: meditation "Let me just say outright, because as soon as you bring that word up, some high percentage of your listeners are like, 'All right, I'm done with this podcast. Meditation's bullshit. I don't want to do it,'" Dan says. He thought that too. "The book is really the story of me coming to terms with...

It's secular and scientifically validated,” he says. People reject meditation. It’s a reflex. But there are a lot of benefits to it. It: - Lowers blood pressure - Boosts immune system - Rewires parts of your brain “Nobody continues to meditate because they feel like 'my pre-frontal cortex might be changing.' You continue to meditate because you're less of an asshole to yourself and others,” he says. “That's a huge value added.” And I agree. Louis C.K., my favorite comedian, says, “It’s not up to you if you’re an asshole or not. That’s up to everybody else.” But you can be aware of it. Louis says, “Self love is a good thing, but self-awareness is more important. You need to once in a while go ‘Um, I'm kind of an asshole.’ You have to have that thought once in a while or you’re a psychopath.” Listen to this podcast with Dan Harris. Find out how you can succeed and live mindfully without losing your edge, learn how from Dan Harris on The Nice Guys Podcast today   ABC News anchor Dan Harris has found a way to be happier, calmer and—according to his wife, at least—nicer in the midst of one of the most competitive careers on earth. And if it can work for someone as fidgety, skeptical and stress-prone as him, it can probably work for you, too. It's a far cry from the heal-your-life, solve-all-your-problems over-promising of self-help. What Dan stumbled upon is practical, doable, and scientifically researched. Dan tells this story as only a reporter can: through deep research, tough questions, and a healthy dose of humor.   Here's more to know about Dan:         - Author of the New York Times bestselling book 10% Happier        - Co-creator of the 10% Happier App        - Through a disgraced evangelical pastor, a mysterious self-help guru, and a fateful gift from his wife, Harris discovered meditation        - He got ABC News anchors Diane Sawyer and Robin Roberts to start meditating        And what we learned talking to him:        The "Voice in your head" does not mean you need to seek professional help      - He's not a tree-hugging, yoga-loving, hippie, kind of guy, but he found that meditation does work        -Meditation can help lower your blood pressure, boost your immune system and even re-wire parts of your brain        - His book "10% HAPPIER: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That Actually Works" is one man's accidental quest to boost his happiness quotient without losing his professional drive        - His "10% Happier" app is for people who are allergic to New Age-y nonsense. We are in the midst of a momentous event in the evolution of human consciousness, but they won't be talking about it in the news tonight. - Eckhart Tolle, self-help guru Open up your mind, in pours the trash. - Meat Puppets, "desert punk" band On todays show we were joined by Emmy award winning correspondent for ABC News and co-anchor for Nightline and the weekend edition of Good Morning America, Dan Harris. We discussed his new book 10% Happier.   After having a nationally televised panic attack on Good Morning America, Dan Harris knew he had to make some changes. A lifelong nonbeliever, he found himself on a bizarre adventure, involving a disgraced pastor, a mysterious self-help guru, and a gaggle of brain scientists. Eventually, Harris realized that the source of his problems was the very thing he always thought was his greatest asset: the incessant, insatiable voice in his head, which had both propelled him through the ranks of a hyper-competitive business and also led him to make the profoundly stupid decisions that provoked his on-air freak-out. We all have a voice in our head. It's what has us losing our temper unnecessarily, checking our email compulsively, eating when we're not hungry, and fixating on the past and the future at the expense of the present. Most of us would assume we're stuck with this voice – that there's nothing we can do to rein it in – but Harris stumbled upon an effective way to do just that. It's a far cry from the miracle cures peddled by the self-help swamis he met; instead, it's something he always assumed to be either impossible or useless: meditation. After learning about research that suggests meditation can do everything from lower your blood pressure to essentially rewire your brain, Harris took a deep dive into the underreported world of CEOs, scientists, and even marines who are now using it for increased calm, focus, and happiness. This week on The One You Feed we have Dan Harris. Dan is best known for his work on ABC News, Nightline and Good Morning America, but we invited him on the show because of his latest book: 10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That Actually Works--A True Story. I was fascinated by this book. Dan was driven to meditation and self help out of a self imposed crisis after he had a panic attack on national TV. His journey through that landscape mirrored my own to some degree. He had a degree of skepticism from the beginning that he retains today. He also was perplexed by the paradox that most fascinates me: What is the degree that serenity can erode our ambition? Going from the esoteric teachings of Eckhart Tolle to the down to earth practical modern buddhism of Mark Epstein (author of the classics Going to Pieces Without Falling Apart and Thoughts without a Thinker) he was able to find an approach that worked for him. The book is insightful, hilarious and very instructive. In This Interview Dan and I Discuss... The One You Feed parable. That the mind can be trained for compassion and happiness. Exercising the brain just like the body. The science of meditation. The message for people who are skeptical of meditation. The voice in my head is an asshole. 10% happier not unicorns and rainbows. What meditation isn't. Reading Eckhart Tolle. Our tendency to focus on the bad things and ignore the good. The difference between constructive anguish and useless rumination. The difference between pain and suffering. "the craving to be elsewhere, to be otherwise, permeated my life" The tendency to project into the future. "The background static of perpetual discontent". How we are like colicky babies who are never quite satisfied. His conflicted view on the tendency to never be satisfied. How dissatisfaction can drive us forward. When it is useful to keep pushing and when is it better to back down? The happiness set point theory. Raising our emotional set point. Ambition versus satisfaction. Motivation coming from happiness versus pain. Not being attached to the results. Romanticizing melancholy. How a certain amount of stress is necessary. Being happy does not work at cross purposes to being successful. Dealing with failure. How when our minds wander we are less happy. Meditation in less than 140 characters. Remembering to feed the good wolf. How one of the meanings of mindfulness is remembering. Training to be less of an asshole.
