My muse this week has been celebrity sports coach George Mumford who worked with the likes of NBA superstar Kobe Bryant. A key concept he worked with Kobe on was to “do the activity for the activity itself, not the result.” Friends, this has not been the guiding light of my life. I've historically looked at all I do as a means to an end. As a pro cyclist I often felt I was enduring 99 miles of racing just to get to the last mile where we went full tilt for the finish line. I unfortunately did a lot of my life like this. And what George coached Kobe in was to enjoy playing basketball. Enjoy it for himself. Taking shots and making baskets is part of playing, so of course do that, but see the glory in the overall playing of the game. And what I've realized is if you take this approach, you are guaranteed to win. In my work, if I enjoy the activity, I win every day. Whether I make a billion dollars or become the most influential podcaster in the human potential movement. If I enjoy being a father, I win everyday regardless of the trials of being a parent. If I enjoy my exercises and adventures and grocery shopping and cooking, then I've won already. Though as George knew and Kobe found out, the more you enjoy the overall activity, the better your perform as well and it's what helped Kobe Bryant become one of the greatest players of all time. An aspiring basketball player at the University of Massachusetts (where he roomed with Dr. J, Julius Erving), injuries forced Mumford out of the game he loved. The medications that relieved the pain of his injuries also numbed him to the emptiness he felt without the game and eventually led him to heroin.After years of making meditation on and off the cushion the center of his life and getting clean, Mumford enrolled in Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn's Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program and collaborated with him to create the Inner-city Stress Reduction Clinic in the early nineties.When Michael Jordan left the Chicago Bulls to play baseball in 1993, the team was in crisis. Coach Phil Jackson, a long-time mindfulness practitioner, contacted Dr. Kabat-Zinn to find someone who could teach mindfulness techniques to the struggling team—someone who would have credibility and could speak the language of his players. Kabat-Zinn led Jackson to Mumford and their partnership began.Mumford has worked with Jackson and many of the teams he coached to become NBA champions. All teams face the grind, the mundane, even the doldrums, throughout the course of their time together. How can coaches keep spirits up, and "even make the mundane sacred?” Coach Jackson and Professor Miller discussed: The responsibility that players have for playing. The coach can bring some fun and joy to the season. Times of the season that can become a drag. Giving out books to players.  Giving players a “shield.” “Name your hero. Who motivated you? Favorite music?…” The “bulls-eye.” “What's your relationship to the team? Where do you fit on the team? Using the bulls-eye as a discussion point. “Why did you place yourself outside of the circle?” Getting a personal relationship with the players. Collected silly fines as winnings for shooting games. Fun and competition. “It changes up the day or gives them some little incentive... just something different." Had rookies read "20 principles of good behavior.” Then got to know players' reading levels and gave other books. Formal meditation session before videos. George Mumford assessing, “How are we doing as a group (in relation to the mid-line)?” Conversation starter. Get to know lives of teammates. Relating the 8-fold principles of Buddism to the offense. Inserting comedian clips into the video. Bring humor into it. Theme videos for particular opponents. Drawing from certain movies, etc.  Having players grit their teeth on pencils to demonstrate aggression. Led to laughter. Tai Chi in front of big mirrors. Be willing to try new things! Seeing an eagle fly by. “Be patient with me, because I'm going to try different stuff.” Giving players Sundays off. “It's a day for you family. A day for your spiritual recovery.” Working closely with trainers to gauge players' recovery and readiness. How to handle long lay-offs and keep players fresh. The Thanksgiving practice routine: Turkey Trot game. Keeping things fresh and fun. Using symbolism: “The Way of the Warrior,” “The Chase for the White Buffalo” Shields, arrows, prayer arrow, headdress all in the team meeting room. What is your space? How do you respond when someone comes into your space? Retaliation? Fight mode? Being centered. Rubber band snap for re-centering. Knowing Awareness Training (KAT). Players were having difficulty learning.  A simple touch to a player to re-center him, relax him. “I liked finding things that were unique… out of the ordinary. It was kind of experimental.”

Joining me on my Run Your Life podcast this week is George Mumford. He is arguably one of the greatest sports psychologists in the world based on the results he has achieved with his work. He has taught mindfulness and meditation to everyone from prison inmates to corporate executives to some of the most extraordinary athletes on the planet such as Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O Neal. He was also 11-time NBA championship head coach Phil Jackson's right hand man during a run of 8 NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls and the LA Lakers. George Mumford was referred to as Phil Jackson's secret weapon and helped the Bulls and the Lakers reach a legacy defining run of championships over those years. In Phil Jackson's own words, he has said, that "Time after time and team after team, I've seen athletes transformed and seen championships saved by players who believed in Mumford's one mind, one breath efforts." A true testament to the impact of George Mumford's work. However, success did not come easy for George. During his career in high school and university, he was wracked with one debilitating injury after another which resulted in him developing an addiction to opioids which then led to a full on heroin and alcohol addiction that he grappled with for years. After hitting rock bottom, George devoted himself to recovery by focusing on his healing from the inside out. It was during this time, he found the power of meditation and mindfulness, working alongside some of the most brilliant minds in the world in this field of study including renowned experts John Kabat-Zinn, Jack Kornfield and Sharon Salzberg. George has now been clean for 39 years and has made it his life mission to teach and work with others  helping them to find true fulfillment, meaning and purpose in their lives.It's no surprise he has impacted so many humans through his work including Michael Jordan who credits George with transforming his on court leadership with the Chicago BullsKobe Bryant has also emphasized the impact of George's work in many interviews and in his book ‘The Mamba Mentality'. Growing up as the 10th of 13 siblings, George Mumford always felt sensitive to the needs of others, whether it was his brothers and sisters or the homeless people he'd pass when walking to and from school. It was the same emotional intelligence that would one day serve him well when guiding the mental game of Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls and Kobe Bryant's LA Lakers. But first he had to pass through some trying times. While basketball offered an oasis from his challenging upbringing, George started drinking and using drugs at age 14. He became good enough on the blacktop to target a walk-on spot at UMass Amherst, where his roommate Julius Erving was becoming a star.But a bad ankle injury destroyed this hoop dream and George sank deeper into addiction to try and cope. He finished his degree and put his talent for numbers to good use in financial management, but had to wear long sleeves to hide the track marks on his arm. A friend convinced him to come to an AA meeting, which led to a long process of getting clean that involved meditation. His instructor challenged him to teach and he found his passion, starting a mindfulness program for prison inmates and inner city residents. After being introduced to Phil Jackson through their mutual friend, Geoge started working with the Chicago Bulls. He stayed with them through their second three-peat, and then followed Phil to the Lakers, who won their own three championships with Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal.
