TWO LESSONS1. God continually confirms our faith. When God calls us to the next big thing, he doesn't ask us to step out mindlessly. He provides everything we need to take steps of fresh faith.God is always working in our life. He uses the past as the basis of our faith. We know God will be with us tomorrow because he was with us yesterday. As we moved forward, he provided a new dose of faith daily.2. God uses broken people to do extraordinary things. A study of the book of Genesis will introduce you to eight people who end up in Hebrews 11, where we see what genuine faith looks like, and all those people—well, let's just say—their lives are a little messy. Do you know who is in the Hall of Faith in Hebrews 11?How could God use a prostitute? Well—he called her to himself. He confirmed her faith with his Person. God transformed her life, and she became a new creation.God revealed himself to Rahab and confirmed her faith by what he did at the Red Sea and Amorites. James 2:25 says that her faith was proven by hiding the spies and becoming a part of the nation of Israel. And…Rahab is in the genealogy of Jesus (Matt. 1:5)God uses broken people. If he didn't, he wouldn't have any people to use.--------DAILY DEVOTIONAL WITH RON MOOREGet Ron's Daily Devotional to your inbox each morning; visit biblechapel.org/devo.CAREGIVINGDo you have a need we can pray for? "I actually had a prior relationship try to message me again and even went on a date with him. Adam made it very clear that he only wanted to see me and that he would not be in competition with anyone else (insert - this is not in the book, I really like that about him). I don't think anyone has ever fought for me like that in my life. I was somewhat taken aback, but also very intrigued by his determination." Bridget Lynch shares Chapter Two excerpts from her book, "Out of the Darkness," and recounts her personal journey of resilience and healing. She emphasizes the importance of confronting challenges head-on and finding strength in the face of adversity. Trying to follow the key macroeconomic debates that are swirling around DC, CNBC, the WSJ and the NYT? If you are but don't want to go back to graduate school or re-open your college macroeconomics textbook, John Quiggin has a solution. His Economics in Two Lessons: Why Markets Work So Well, and Why They Can Fail So Badly (Princeton University Press, 2019) achieves several goals. First, it frames the current debates, providing a concise, well-written history of macroeconomics and the key twists and turns in economic policy that have brought us to our current state of (general) disagreement on economic policy. Second, he structures his view of macroeconomics as a rebuttal to a 1946 book by Henry Hazlitt in 1946 called Economics in One Lesson. Seventy years later, Quiggin counters Hazlitt's view that markets are "correct," in that their prices accurately reflect opportunity costs for buyers and sellers. Quiggin's second lesson highlights the externalities and factors that distort those opportunity costs and lead to suboptimal outcomes such as extended unemployment, excessive income inequality, and the seemingly intractable problem (from an economics perspective) of pollution. In the final portion of his book, Quiggin argues what policies he thinks would make markets work better by generating a more accurate understanding of opportunity costs. To some, his prescriptions will look like the program of the Left. The great irony is that his goal is to make markets function better, not rid us of them. Whether you agree with his prescriptions are not, this is a very interesting book and a great way for non-economists to get up to speed on current debates and policy issues without having to do a single test for statistical significance or worry about heteroscedasticity. 2022 was an extraordinary year, wasn't it? And for most of us, it's also been a return to our daily lives of family, work, leisure, and vacations. However, looking back to this time last year, who would have thought that we would have 8 interest rate rises in as many months, that inflation would be rampant, or that there would be a war on the other side of the world that would last for almost a year? Nobody could have foreseen all that's happened, including the severe slump in consumer confidence because of all the economic uncertainty or that the coronavirus keeps lingering. But as we're now well into 2023, I can't help but reflect on what Australia as a country has accomplished and what I've achieved personally, what I've overcome, and the lessons I want to carry with me into this New Year. And I'd like to share them with you today to help make 2023 a great year for you in your property journey. MAKING ROOM #2 | Embody Servanthood | December 11, 2022Brian Van Eps | Guest Speaker “In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, ‘Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.’ Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.’ ‘How will this be,’ Mary asked the angel, ‘since I am a virgin?’ The angel answered, ‘The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail.’ ‘I am the Lord’s servant,’ Mary answered. ‘May your word to me be fulfilled.’ Then the angel left her.” Luke 1:26-38 (NIV) Who has served you well? The “Making Room” Idea: Embody Servanthood Mary’s question: “How can this be?” Two Lessons we can embody as well: 1) You are uniquely gifted for God’s purposes2} You are given God’s Spirit and his Power to do what he asks of you Mary’s response: “I am the Lord’s servant.” The Big Question: How will you respond? A “Making Room” Response: Embody Servanthood through Radical Hospitality Reflection Questions:1) Who has served you well? 2) Who have you served recently? 3) What excuses do you have for not living out God’s purposes? 4) How are you uniquely gifted for God’s purposes? 5) How will you respond to God’s call to Embody Servanthood? 6) What is one Radically Hospitable act you can do before the end of 2022? Peter B, CSsR, on 19th March. 2022. Let us reflect and pray to the Lord
