This interview is an episode from @The-Well, our publication about ideas that inspire a life well-lived, created with the @JohnTempletonFoundation. What if our incessant drive for self-improvement isn't always conducive to happiness? Cognitive scientist Laurie Santos proposes this intriguing question. She notes that while evolution has wired us for relentless self-enhancement, our modern environment, ripe with comparisons and demands for excellence, amplifies this instinct, often to our detriment. The incessant push for "more" and "better" can lead to societal harm, fostering a competitive, individualistic society rather than one rooted in collective harmony and goodwill. Moreover, it can compromise personal happiness. Genuine well-being, Santos suggests, arises from extending compassion towards others and ourselves. Self-compassion, defined as mindfulness, recognition of common humanity, and self-kindness, can surprisingly enhance performance and resilience without a drill-sergeant approach. Breaking free from the pervasive "hustle culture" requires acknowledging its illusory nature, prioritizing kindness towards oneself, orienting towards others, and practicing gratitude to appreciate one's journey. Chapters: 0:00 The drive for perfection 1:48 2 consequences of pushing too hard 2:38 3 parts of self-compassion 4:15 Why hustle culture is toxic 4:59 Happiness comes from other-oriented behavior ------------------------------------------------------------------- About Laurie Santos: Dr. Laurie Santos is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Yale University. Her research provides an interface between evolutionary biology, developmental psychology, and cognitive neuroscience, exploring the evolutionary origins of the human mind by comparing the cognitive abilities of human and non-human primates. Her experiments focus on non-human primates (in captivity and in the field), incorporating methodologies from cognitive development, animal learning psychology, and cognitive neuroscience. Legendary Life | Transform Your Body, Upgrade Your Health & Live Your Best Life
As we embrace the holiday season, many of us, especially those over 40 who are constantly striving for success in our careers and personal lives, might be facing this struggle: Despite living a life that seems like a dream, we often catch ourselves measuring our success against where we think we should be. Sounds familiar? In this special Christmas episode, Ted explores how gratitude can transform our mental health, how shifting our mindset from idealized future goals to acknowledging our progress can change our perspective on success.
Whether it's eating healthier, getting exercise, starting a meditation practice or staying socially connected, figuring out what to do to be happy might be simple – but actually doing these things and living in a way that lets us experience happiness is much harder. When we know there are things we can do that will make us healthier and happier, why do we struggle to actually do them? Why do we get caught in a cycle of chasing happiness instead of choosing joy, even when we know better? This is what Gretchen Rubin wanted to understand when she began studying happiness and why people form the habits they do. It turns out that it has everything to do with how we relate to expectations. Gretchen discovered that there are four different “tendencies” that tell us how different people approach habits and expectations – whether we question expectations, comply with expectations, rebel against expectations or uphold them from within. We are born with our tendency and there's no right or wrong way to be, but our ability to pursue happiness and form habits is directly connected to which tendency we're wired with. In this episode, Gretchen describes each of the four tendencies in detail and ways to work with your type to go after the life you want. She also talks about habit formation and the different approaches to starting a new habit, so you can figure out which one works best for you! This is so fascinating and has major implications for how we structure our lives, how we work with each other in business and relationships and so much more! Listen to discover: Concrete steps we can take to start boosting our happiness The "four tendencies" personality framework The Upholder, The Obliger, The Questioner and The Rebel – four different ways we all respond to inner and outer expectations How your tendency impacts how you form habits How to overcome resistance and work with your tendency to be as successful and happy as possible Misconceptions about happiness and techniques to form better habits Though it's true that everyone is different in terms of what makes us happy, we're also all different in how we get to the things that make us happy. When we understand our wiring, we can overcome resistance and set ourselves up to achieve the life we want, in a way that is uniquely ours. "Our physical experience is always going to color our emotional experience." - Gretchen Rubin "The key to happiness is relationships." - Gretchen Rubin "Don't suit other people. SHOW NOTES: On this show…we are taking a colorful look at joy as we explore its meaning and presence, contemplating the idea, if joy were a color…When pure joy overflows and becomes so tangible you can reach out and touch, what color do you see? Maybe you're still waiting for that type of joyful overabundance to show itself in your life and that's okay. Want some good news? Joy resides inside of you and once you remove the barriers and unlock the resistance, it has room to activate in your life. Joy is defined as a feeling of great pleasure and happiness. When did you feel a strong sense of pride, love, or gratitude? Were you beaming? Eyes sparkling? Body radiating positive energy? Don't overlook these joyful moments thinking joy has to be a steady state to be real. These moments, when recognized and celebrated, will be motivation for more! I had a friend use the term, “if joy were a color..” when describing a social encounter where a person was communicating a recent win. She overheard this conversation and witnessed the winner so full of joy that she radiated a tangible experience. What a beautiful thought. Days, weeks, months, or even years can get messy and distracting. Our focus can be easily be misdirected and we can feel like we're barely getting by. Who has time for joy? George Bernard Shaw said, “This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; the being a force of Nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.” Let's look at this idea from a few different angles… Dr. Jamie D. Aten shares What Is Joy and What Does It Say About Us? An interview with Dr. Pamela King on the meaning and depth of joy. Found at psychologytoday.com Over at compassion.com I found some differences between joy and happiness. Kendra Cherry asks and answers What Is Happiness? Defining Happiness, and How to Become Happier. Found at verywellmind.com On the Yale Youth Ministry Institute's Youtube Channel, I found more from Dr. Pamela Ebstyne King: Purpose & Joy CHALLENGE: Embrace joyful moments and notice the colors and unique feelings that lift your spirit. Don't stop there. Remove any barriers and negative thoughts to release pure joy in your life. I Know YOU Can Do It!

James recently read an article about millionaires spending their time differently, which made them happier. It's not the money that makes them happier. It's how they spend their time. James has noticed that clients who aren't millionaires and spend their time the same way also seem happier. These three things might surprise you. James talks about what they are and how you can spend your time in a way that might make you happier and more prone to possibly earning more in the process. We all have the same 24 hours in a day. We might as well make those hours work for us in a way that brings us joy and contentment. Episode Highlights: [02:17] Being a millionaire and being happy doesn't always go together. Money doesn't make people happy in itself. [03:09] The article that talks about what makes millionaires happy isn't about wealth, it's about how they spend their time differently. [03:24] There's no magic formula. We all have the same 24 hours in a day. [04:04] Millionaires spend more time exercising and volunteering. I've seen successful people be very diligent about exercise. It makes sense that people who take care of their bodies are more able to grow wealth. [05:03] They're not just getting up and getting after it so they can accumulate more, they are also getting up and getting after it so that they can help others. [05:24] Millionaires spend a significant amount of time in active leisure such as exercising, socializing, praying, meditating, hobbies, and volunteering. [06:08] They have intentional active leisure not just vegging out on the couch. [07:22] They spend substantially less time in non-active leisure like watching TV, napping, resting, relaxing, and doing nothing. [08:51] Happy people waste their time less. [10:05] Millionaires have more control at work. There was no difference between the hours spent at work. The difference was the autonomy or control they had. [12:45] Autonomy and control is extremely important for happiness at work. [14:02] The three key differences that emerged were spending more time on exercising and volunteering, watching less TV and less sitting around, and enjoying work more through having more control. [14:21] These are all modifications that you don't have to be a millionaire to make. Find ways to be active in your leisure. Take your health seriously. Have your free time focused on active leisure. [15:21] Create authority and autonomy when you show up to work. Ep. 47 (Part 2 of 3) | “Don't miss it!” says James Baraz, author of Awakening Joy and creator of the very intriguing 5-month Awakening Joy course. “Don't miss it'' refers to the present moment—the gladness, the beauty, the uniqueness. James explains that in order to awaken our joy, we need to savor the wholesome moments and not turn away distracted, slipping back into our habitual mental ruts. James' teachings take us deeply into states like gratitude and compassionate presence, to where we can focus our attention on how it feels to feel good somatically, thereby creating new neural pathways that strengthen awareness and aliveness. James has witnessed a lot of people learn to love themselves and turn their lives around as a result of this teaching. Why are we the last ones to see the goodness inside ourselves? he wonders. How can we so radically underestimate ourselves? Rest in the landscape of gratitude when James guides a short meditation in part 2, and be inspired that transformational change is indeed possible for all of us—to where we can know the joy of loving ourselves, of connecting with others, the joy of letting go, of service, and the joy of simply being—as we undertake the fundamental experiment of discovering who we really are. Happiness is a choice. It's a bold statement, but it's one I wholeheartedly support. Whether you agree with this statement, or whether the idea sits a little uncomfortably with you, I think you are going to get a lot out of this uplifting conversation. My guest is Mo Gawdat and he has been at both ends of the spectrum on which we might consider happiness lies. And he's unlocked the key to true contentment, no matter what obstacles you may come across in life. You might know Mo as the former Chief Business Officer of Google X – a role with status and riches that many might aspire to. You may also know him as the respected ‘happiness expert', speaker and bestselling author of self-help books like Solve For Happy and his latest book, That Little Voice In Your Head. We begin our conversation by talking about the concept of success and fulfilment and why his money only gave him joy when he gave it away. We also chat about how the sudden and tragic death of his son at the age of 21 set him on a path to make a billion people happier. This is a wide-ranging, personal and heartfelt conversation. Listening to Mo's account is incredibly emotional, yet he's so full of love, truth and gratitude. I'm so grateful to him for sharing so honestly and authentically but I get the idea that Mo knows no other way. This man embodies the idea that happiness is a set of skills and beliefs that we can all practice. And you can choose to practice them, no matter what life puts in your way. When you listen to him speak, it's hard not to agree. In this episode we talk with Stephanie Rosenfield, a mom coach who focuses on helping overwhelmed moms enjoy the life they always wanted. We discuss how she entered motherhood for the first time, how she was able to reach her own goals, and how she uses what she learned to help other moms do the same. Stephanie started her own motherhood journey feeling completely unprepared of everything that came with motherhood in the postpartum period. She had gone from being in control of so much to feeling completely lost and unable to control so much around her. When searching for solutions she noticed so much was driven by society and how society defines what equals a happy life. She was over the stereotype of “mommy wine time” and “target therapy” and knew there had to be another way of navigating motherhood. Finding herself tired of just pretending to be happy, she started a journey of finding true happiness. After working with a life coach herself, she decided to become certified as well and is now able to help moms in so many aspects of their life. She realized happiness does not come from external factors and noticed she needed to look within and see what she wanted and needed for herself. Stephanie has so many amazing examples from her own life that are so easy to relate to and are able to help us as moms better understand our emotions and create a future that is different and aligned with what we need. Listen to the full episode for a deep conversation on how it's possible to find happiness in motherhood and fall in love with this stage of our life. And there isn't much we can't accomplish if we just start to tap into the untapped potential of our own imaginations. Our brains are supercomputers that were created specifically to assist us in achieving our objectives and surviving in the world. It is continually digesting the information around us, as well as the items and people we come into contact with on a daily basis. We get that much closer to living the life we most want to live by harnessing the power of our brains and learning how to tap into it so that we can start directing the results before it's too late. Free Weekly Newsletter To Learn Meditation So You Can Meditate More Effectively HERE... Don't worry if you're new to visualizing. Everyone has to begin somewhere, and in this beginner's guide, we'll show you the ropes and give you a basic idea of how and why visualization can help us achieve our goals. Our subconscious mind is a powerful place, and when it works in our favor instead of against us, the possibilities are endless! Take our word for it, but don't take our word for it. Instead, experience for yourself how effective visualization can be in unlocking your subconscious mind and tapping into your own abilities. Visualization is a centuries-old method that has been used all across the world. It started with cave paintings, grew into our ability to communicate via spoken and written words, and has been assisting human beings in achieving their goals for longer than we will ever see in our lifetimes. It's been a powerful tool in aiding healing and boosting physical performance, and it's also helped a lot of people improve their mental performance. It has repeatedly proven to be a tried and effective method of assisting us in harnessing our own power and living the life we choose. There will be skeptics who do not believe it works, as with anything. They will believe that their method is the only way and that no one can ever achieve success by talking to themselves and looking at photographs. But if you look closely, you'll notice that they all have one thing in common: they're unhappy with themselves in some way, and they're probably used to being disappointed. You have two options for dealing with these. You might encourage them to try visualization for themselves and explain how the negative bias operates. You might explain to them that by focusing on their negative thoughts and defeat, they are attracting more of the same. Rather than trying to put a damper on your party, explain to them about the subconscious brain's power and how they might begin to harness it for themselves. You may teach them the way to success and let them experiment with it. You can also choose to ignore them. You might decide that their energy is too bad for you to be around, and you can do all in your ability to surround yourself with only positive and successful people who will motivate you to achieve your goals. Positive thinking is a powerful tool for successful people. They are aware of how their brains can impact their actions, as well as tactics they can employ to improve their own lives and stay focused on their objectives. They will never criticize another person's tactics. Instead, they might strive to figure out how they might learn from them and put what they've learned into practice in their own life. Whatever you choose to do in this case, remember that it is not your obligation to change, assist, or support other people's views and feelings. Your goals are what you need to concentrate on. Using visualization techniques is a fantastic way to get started on a journey that you may never have imagined yourself taking, but one that you will undoubtedly succeed on. Overall, using visualization techniques can help you enhance your life by increasing your confidence and motivation. You'll be able to accept your own power and use the subconscious mind's power to create decisions that will help you achieve your objectives and become the person you've always wanted to be. However, you must put in the necessary effort. You are capable of completing all of your tasks and achieving the objectives you set for yourself. Believe that success awaits you at the end of the road, and don't let yourself down. Get rid of your negative bias and the people that are holding you back in your life. Concentrate on yourself and provide your brain with the imagery and mental support it requires to move through your current issues and create a space for future success. You have all of the power you need to create the life you choose. Start utilizing visualization techniques right now to realize for yourself how strong you are and to start making the adjustments you need to make in your life to become the best version of yourself. You must perform the task, but then you may relax and let your mind take care of the rest. But don't take our word for it. Try out these methods and see for yourself how much control you have over your own destiny! ______________________________________________________________________ Knowledge | Experience | Wisdom Learn How To Deepen Your Meditation Practice Here: https://www.MeditationLifeSkills.com/ Meditation is not a means to an end. Free Weekly Newsletter To Learn Meditation So You Can Meditate More Effectively HERE... Theta waves have a frequency range of 4-7 Hz. Theta is referred to as the twilight stage since it is typically only experienced for a brief period of time just before falling asleep or when waking up in the morning. It's a timeless, dreamlike state of consciousness that hovers just on the verge of sleep, right before you fall asleep. Deep concentration is characterized by theta waves, which are also present. Training your brain to enter the theta state is a balancing act. First and foremost, it is necessary to relax and calm yourself before entering Theta, and then, once you have entered Theta, it is necessary to remain attentive and aware in order to avoid falling asleep. It's really not that difficult to learn; it just takes a little time and effort. As youngsters, we spend a lot of time in theta frequency, which helps to explain a lot about the mysteries of this frequency. Children have little or no awareness of the passage of time. In their spare time, they can spend hours building sandcastles and investigating the environment with microscopic vision. In theta brain waves, the brain state of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep (dreams), hypnosis, and lucid dreaming. The barely conscious state shortly before sleeping and just after awakening are all represented. Theta is the boundary between the conscious and subconscious worlds. By learning to access and affect the strong subconscious part of ourselves that is ordinarily inaccessible to our waking minds, we can then learn to use a conscious, waking Theta brain wave. When listening to Theta Waves, many people report feeling extremely relaxed (almost as if they are in a dream). What Are Binaural Beats? You can use them to modify your signature brainwave activity to improve your performance, increase your productivity, and even enjoy a good night's sleep. Brainwaves that are precisely tuned to your brain's frequency balance it and supply you with the precise frequencies you require for every task. Binaural beats can assist you in the development of new patterns and the expansion of frequencies that you may be lacking or in need of additional. Brainwave technology, which has been clinically verified, studied at Harvard and UCLA, and is utilized in hospitals, has the ability to change your brainwaves rapidly and effortlessly. Ep. 6 (Part 2 of 2) | In this inspiring and empowering conversation, Rick Hanson spells out how we can use positive, self-directed neuroplasticity to hardwire our brains in order to become happier, cultivate virtues, deal with cravings, become deeply grounded, turn our desired states into stable traits, and more. Neurodharma is Rick's conceptual creation: a marriage of neuroscience, psychology, and contemporary wisdom that offers individuals who are out to make a change for the better an impressive and effective brain hacking toolkit. Rick's own gentle wisdom, compassion, clarity, kindness, and humor shine in this truly groundbreaking (for most of us) dialogue, making him a wonderful exemplar of the peaceful, loving, altruistic, and effective person practicing neurodharma can help us to become. Ep. 5 (Part 1 of 2) | In this inspiring and empowering conversation, Rick Hanson spells out how we can use positive, self-directed neuroplasticity to hardwire our brains in order to become happier, cultivate virtues, deal with cravings, become deeply grounded, turn our desired states into stable traits, and more. Do you set new year's resolutions? A lot of people do, and that's great, but you know how it often goes: we make big plans and then we get busy and those plans fall by the wayside and we don't follow through. I've been there, and I've learned how to reframe this over the years so I can actually follow through on what I said I wanted to do. Consider this reframe: setting goals instead of resolutions. This is what we're talking about in today's podcast episode. Not only that, but how to set goals that help you become happier, healthy and more excited about your life every single day. We talk about: The top new year's resolutions that people make -- every year Why those resolutions never seem to stick The power in prioritizing goals over resolutions How to get your family involved in goal setting and vision board planning The science behind why it takes 21 days to form a habit My family tradition to get my family involved in goal setting for the last six years Sign Up for Natalie's Newsletter: page.natalietysdal.com/newsletter Resources mentioned in this episode Vision Board Download Connect with Natalie Tysdal On Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ntysdal/ On YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZ2puxB_hWDNn1Qe3UzOMKg On Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NatalieTysdal/ https://www.natalietysdal.com Connect with Natalie Tysdal On Instagram On YouTube On Facebook Website

Happiness is often considered as a secondary goal or an outcome of your daily life and events. But in reality, it's more than that. Happiness comes from within, it depends on your mindset and way of thinking. The most important thing is in every situation, we should be able to find a way to be happier about the ourselves. "Happiness is the cheapest luxury you can get." Do you want to become happier? We only get one life. We should try to make it as happy as possible. But how can we become happier? Allow yourself to do what you want. Give yourself time to pursue what makes you happy. Don't keep anything that is making you unhappy. Look out for things that truly makes you happy and give your time to it. You have the right to be happy. #Happiness #BeHappy #MakeMeBetter *** Download our app: Android ► https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.story.craftystudio.shortstory IOS ► https://apps.apple.com/in/app/make-me-better/id1508559968 Website ► https://www.makemebetter.net/ *** Join Us in Social Media
