Whether it's eating healthier, getting exercise, starting a meditation practice or staying socially connected, figuring out what to do to be happy might be simple – but actually doing these things and living in a way that lets us experience happiness is much harder. When we know there are things we can do that will make us healthier and happier, why do we struggle to actually do them? Why do we get caught in a cycle of chasing happiness instead of choosing joy, even when we know better? This is what Gretchen Rubin wanted to understand when she began studying happiness and why people form the habits they do. It turns out that it has everything to do with how we relate to expectations. Gretchen discovered that there are four different “tendencies” that tell us how different people approach habits and expectations – whether we question expectations, comply with expectations, rebel against expectations or uphold them from within. We are born with our tendency and there's no right or wrong way to be, but our ability to pursue happiness and form habits is directly connected to which tendency we're wired with. In this episode, Gretchen describes each of the four tendencies in detail and ways to work with your type to go after the life you want. She also talks about habit formation and the different approaches to starting a new habit, so you can figure out which one works best for you! This is so fascinating and has major implications for how we structure our lives, how we work with each other in business and relationships and so much more! Listen to discover: Concrete steps we can take to start boosting our happiness The "four tendencies" personality framework The Upholder, The Obliger, The Questioner and The Rebel – four different ways we all respond to inner and outer expectations How your tendency impacts how you form habits How to overcome resistance and work with your tendency to be as successful and happy as possible Misconceptions about happiness and techniques to form better habits Though it's true that everyone is different in terms of what makes us happy, we're also all different in how we get to the things that make us happy. When we understand our wiring, we can overcome resistance and set ourselves up to achieve the life we want, in a way that is uniquely ours. "Our physical experience is always going to color our emotional experience." - Gretchen Rubin "The key to happiness is relationships." - Gretchen Rubin "Don't suit other people. Suit yourself." - Gretchen Rubin "I'm a big believer in the genetic roots of personality." - Gretchen Rubin "We can work with each other to help us all achieve our aims, but sometimes we have to provide a different way from what would work for us." - Gretchen Rubin "Your communication style would change once you know this." - Michelle Chalfant "Happier people are more interested in the problems of the world." - Gretchen Rubin "You have to take care of yourself. You have to put yourself first." - Michelle Chalfant "When you're not indulging in a temptation, it goes away." - Gretchen Rubin LINKS & RESOURCES Gretchen Rubin Website https://gretchenrubin.com/ Happier Podcast (Gretchen Rubin podcast) https://gretchenrubin.com/podcasts/ Gretchen Rubin Books https://gretchenrubin.com/books/ The Four Tendencies Quiz https://gretchenrubin.com/fourtendencies The Happier App https://the-happiness-project.com/pages/happier-app Gretchen Rubin Facebook https://www.facebook.com/GretchenRubin Gretchen Rubin Instagram https://www.instagram.com/gretchenrubin/ Gretchen Rubin LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/gretchenrubin 2024 The Adult Chair® Coaching Certification - Doors Close January 5! https://theadultchair.com/certification MORE ADULT CHAIR The Adult Chair® Website https://theadultchair.com The Adult Chair® Coaching Certification https://theadultchair.com/certification Tanasi https://tanasi.com/ Code ADULT to get 25% off your first order STAY CONNECTED Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/themichellechalfant Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheMichelleChalfant/ The Adult Chair® Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/theadultchair/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/Michellechalfant

Your habits create your life and determine your lifestyle. On today's episode, Anna and Nina discuss why it's crucial to cultivate habits that serve you and help you reach your goals. They dig into the science behind habits, how to figure out what type of structure works best for you, and the framework for creating positive habits. Where in your life have you enforced arbitrary rules for yourself that aren't actually in alignment with how you want to live? In order to create new habits, we have to first understand what our current patterns are and where they come from. From there, we can start to explore what we want to accomplish during the day from a happiness standpoint instead of looking at everything through the lens of productivity. Anna and Nina talk about how they've learned to work with their natural lifestyle rhythms and create habits around that. They touch on how their morning and nighttime routines have changed since tuning out what society deems as acceptable and plugging into what helps them thrive. Plus, they talk about ways to effectively break habits and replace them with new ones. Get ready to change your definition of swagger, and to be inspired to do the work to find your own! Our guest today is Leslie Ehm; creative director, training guru, author of Swagger, and an all-round love-filled badass. As you'll hear in more detail in this episode, finding your swagger is all about stepping into your authentic self and living your truth. Swagger looks different for everyone and leaves no room for judgement. It is a common occurrence for human beings to feel fragmented and experience an inability to be themselves; this is largely due to a few “blockers” which Leslie describes for us. Fortunately, there is a way to overcome these, and Leslie is just the right person to teach us all how. We explore the three main driving forces behind swagger, why you shouldn't be afraid of asking for a do-over, the value that lies in F bombs, and the importance of knowing when you should apologize and when you absolutely should not. If you're ready to experience the magic that comes with finding your swagger, this is a great place to start! Key Points From This Episode: Swagger, as defined by Leslie. [00:03:35] Who Leslie's swagger icon is, and why. [00:05:24] Where Leslie's ideas intersect with Todd Herman's (author of The Alter Ego Effect) and where they diverge. [00:08:14] Fragmentation that many people experience, and how Leslie has learned to overcome this. [00:09:24] Clare explains how she has evolved as an entrepreneur over the years. [00:10:43] Magic that happens when you start speaking your truth and stepping into your authentic self. [00:12:02] Blockers that Leslie has identified which prevent us from fully being ourselves. [00:16:40] Leslie's motivation for writing [00:18:16] Why Leslie is an advocate for F bombs and other swear words. [00:19:37] The importance of being non-judgmental; everyone has a different kind of swagger. [00:22:10] Situations in which you should apologize and those in which you shouldn't. [00:23:47] Understanding intention, truth and self-belief (the three drivers of swagger) and an example of how to manifest these in the right way. [00:29:55] Everybody makes mistakes; don't be afraid of asking for a do-over. [00:34:36] The importance of figuring out if you click with someone before doing business with them. In this episode, I chat about the missing pieces that often go unnoticed for a joyful fitness routine. Success is 95% MINDSET, 5% strategy, so we need to focus more on how we are showing up each day, not just the workout itself. Personal development is key for this. "The Slight Edge" by Jeff Olson is a great read around becoming more consistent. It helps to understand your own habit tendencies; fitness habits are not a one size fits all. Take Gretchen Rubin's Four Tendencies Quiz here. If you find yourself starting and stopping, you'll learn how to create CONSISTENCY vs. on again, off again behavior. When you veer off course (and you will), get curious, not emotional. Fitness is just the tip of the iceberg - there is so much more underneath to drive positive change like Community, Environment, & Mindset. Did this strike a chord with you? I'm here to help! Self Publishing School : Learn How To Write A Book And Grow Your Business
Gretchen Reuben is the author of bestsellers Better Than Before and The Happiness Project. Her tribe follows her both in print and online. She also produces her own podcast Happy with Gretchen Reuben, where she talks about good habits and happiness with her sister Elizabeth Craft and is named an all-time best podcast on iTunes in 2015. She started her career in law when she realized she wanted to be a writer. She says of her transformation from law to writing, “For my transition, it wasn’t one moment, it was a series of events that happened over time.” At one point, she considered that writing could be a job for her instead of a hobby. Also, at this time, she went over to a friend’s house, and after talking with her friend, she realized that she wanted the same activity for her work and fun time. With an idea in mind for a book, she came to the realization that “if I was to ever try, now was the time to try.” Gretchen remembers the ecstasy of getting an agent because, for her, that felt like the most significant milestone in her writing career. She was thrilled that someone would put money on her writing career and ambitions. As for her writing process, Gretchen has never deviated from her original procedure. She does not recommend this to everyone; however, this is what she has found works best for her writing endeavors. Using mostly books and a passion for a topic, she fervently engages in going down the rabbit hole of investigation. Listen in to find out why Gretchen focuses on using stories from her own life, how she grounds her writing when using specialized terms and how she came up with her idea for her book, The Happiness Project. Learn how novel and challenge make people happier, how she finds time to write, and the easiest way to make an action a habit. Show Notes [01:51] Moving from working in a law office in the Supreme Court to becoming a writer. [03:21] Gretchen realizes that if she is going to make a career change, now is the time. [05:02] Toughest part of her transition when working on her book. [06:30] Her writing and research process for each of her books. [09:02] Turning research and investigative notes into readable material. [11:42] For Gretchen, taking notes is a way for her mind to connect the dots of a story. [14:53] When writing, she focuses on using clear direct language and using stories from her own life. [18:39] How being on a crowded bus after running through a rainstorm gave her the idea for her book. [21:32] What is happiness and where can you find happiness in your life? Brief Summary & Bio:In this episode, Certified Health Coach Anya Perry talks about Habits vs Routines, and the up's and down's of habit formation. She explains the difference between being your own leader instead of a victim of your circumstances, why we should plan to fail (because it's gonna happen), what your all-or-nothing mindset or being a “monday starter” is doing to your habits and routines; and she teaches her concept of identifying your “hinging” points. I love it. Anya is a certified health coach, USA weightlifting and CrossFit coach. Anya battled boring diets, low energy, and declining health for over 10 years before she found what works. Now, she helps women achieve their dream state of health, fitness, and vitality… without the struggles, battles of miserable diets, and yo-yo results. She's been focusing her coaching on entrepreneurs who work from home and struggle to get systems and routines in place; which I think is really applicable right now because so many of us are being forced to work remotely due to the coronavirus. So now we have to be even more able to self-manage and stay on track with our habits and goals. Even thinking about starting new routines or continuing habits you had before can be so seemingly impossible at this time. Having Anya here gives us great ideas and helps to inspire us. The code is predictable. Binary. It either works, or it doesn't. Working with people is much messier. Their actions and reactions are not easy to predict. Or are they? Today we talk with Claudius Mbemba, a tech leader, public speaker, and the CTO of Neu, about personality tests. How useful they are, which one to choose, is it enough to use only one, and how to use them to increase the productivity and happiness of your team. For the last episode of series two we're honestly discussing our difficulty in understanding how the act of letting go can help us achieve what we truly desire. We share two fails this week and one exciting joint success then dive right into our main topic, letting go. It always seems like the biggest paradox to suggest letting go of the idea of getting what you most fervently want is the most powerful way of having it manifest in your life. WHY ARE WE TALKING ABOUT IT THEN? Because it links to other episodes of The Good Fail where we spoke about planning and expectation. Also, letting go is part of doing The Good Fail. HOW DO WE DO THAT? Our image of success is almost more inflexible that our view of failure. But acknowledging what we want to succeed at most is an important step in letting it go. If we can't articulate our desires it's hard to change our perspective on it. BUT REALLY, HOW DO WE DO THAT? We need to confront the idea of 100% failing at something and accept that as an outcome. And then fail a few times to see that we can survive it. Because discovering success is slippery like water and not set in stone might open us up to the possibility of finding success in unexpected places. WHAT CAN WE CONCLUDE? We need to remember that it's not about letting go of what we really desire but how we allow it to find us that is key. WHAT'S OUR RECOMMENDATION? https://quiz.gretchenrubin.com (The Four Tendencies Quiz) by Gretchen Rubin. Find out how you respond to inner and outer expectations and learn how you can work with your innate self in order to work better at life. How do food rules or guidelines make YOU feel? Are you someone who finds comfort or freedom in the structure and direction or do food rules always feel like restriction or toxic diet dogma to you? In this shorter format episode I am sharing some thoughts that have been heavy on my mind lately and I am diving into why I think we need to consider that individual's perceptions and tendencies toward rules differ just as much as the individuals themselves do. I am also sharing some of my personal concerns with the current extreme pendulum swings and the shame-inducing judgement I have seen some folks feel for their personal preferences and tendencies that may differ from others. Have you heard of the four tendencies framework? Author Gretchen Rubin has created a personality type framework, which helps you to understand how you react to inner and outer expectations. Learning which personality type you are can be hugely beneficial, as it can help you to create strategies for fulfilling your personal goals. As well as helping you to complete tasks which other people require of you. As differing tendencies, we discuss what it's like to be an 'upholder' and a 'questioner', and the tactics we use to maximise our tendencies and take on their challenges. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in habit-forming, and learning more about themselves so that they can complete their work more efficiently, as well as stick to personal habits they'd like to more easily. We also discuss strategies for working with people, or being in a relationship with someone, of a different tendency. They all have their quirks and it's super interesting to figure out which one you are, as well as which tendency the people around you are! Perfectionism also comes up as we dissect how different tendencies approach the 'perfect' outcome. Be sure to click through on the quiz in our show notes to find out your own tendency! Happiness researcher Gretchen Rubin is interested in all facets of human nature. She shares her insights into the 8 Splendid Truths of Happiness, including “feeling good, feeling bad, and feeling right in an atmosphere of growth.” Sometimes happiness doesn’t always make you feel happy, and sometimes we do things for our happiness that don’t actually make us feel good. Find out why in this episode. Happiness Challenged by Habits After conducting research and interviewing multitudes of people, Gretchen found that the subject of habits came up often as a common cause of frustration. She discovered that our habits and productivity challenges greatly contribute to our happiness or unhappiness. One of the solutions is to figure out when you were consistently productive and what was different then from now. People expect to be motivated by their desire to do something. For many people, accountability is really the key aspect. Sometimes we develop a habit of hiding our own story from ourselves, and we start to become unhappy. We need to pay attention to those things we want to hide. Part of the key to happiness is discovering what you are hiding from yourself. What are you not contemplating or reflecting on? Challenging Yourself to Happiness We feel happier when we’re growing. When we’re learning something new, challenging ourselves, helping other people, somehow acting in a positive way in the world. Learning something new for ourselves is an important engine for happiness. When everything in your life is feeling very bad, if you can seek out an area where you have an atmosphere of growth, it gives you a surge in energy. The Four Tendencies Gretchen has created a framework for dividing humanity into four categories called the four tendencies. To discover which category you fit into, go to http://gretchenrubin.com/happiness_project/2015/01/ta-da-the-launch-of-my-quiz-on-the-four-tendencies-learn-about-yourself/ (GretchenRubin.com), or you can visit https://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/1950137/Four-Tendencies-January-2015 (Happiercast.com/quiz) for the free quiz and report. We have to understand how we are different from each other, to relate to one another. “We all have to figure out what is right for us“, says Gretchen. “You can succeed if it’s set up in a way that is right for you.” If we have habits that work for us, we are more likely to be successful and productive. She has developed 21 habits strategies, because she believes when we change our habits, we change our lives.
