Central Station - Stories from Outback Australian Cattle Stations

Paddy Heatley had a fairly unconventional childhood. By the time he left home at the age of 9, he'd already dropped out of school – foregoing learning to read and write. At the age of 12, he was smuggling tobacco, alcohol and cattle from South to North Ireland. And, at the age of 16, with his mother's signature forged, he climbed aboard a ship bound for Australia. In this episode, Paddy share's yarns for his early days in Ireland, and his first few years in Australia. He speaks about meeting his future bride, the time he was almost charged with attempted murder, his day working with, and sometimes walking on, crocodiles, to settling in the Northern Territory as a cattle truck driver. Paddy sure has lived life to the fullest. As you can imagine, there was no way we could fit his whole story into one episode, so keep your ears out for more in the coming months.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This episode began as a cool conversation without much structure with two guys in visual arts who create music as a passion. But it turned into a deeper conversation about the creative processes for both mediums. Kevin Mellon is a storyboard artist for Archer & Hitmonkey, among a lot of other credits. David Heatley has drawn illustrations for The New Yorker, The New York Times, and more in addition to writing books. Both have also written and released albums of music recently and the combination of visual arts and music was so interesting to me to hear how they work in both mediums. I was surprised to learn the differences in their approaches to each medium. And the agree on the importance on sharing the process of creation with others. Seeing works in progress when they were young was a huge encouragement to them. And they both use each medium differently to work through their issues. So check out this episode, check out kevinmellon.com and davidheatley.com to hear their music and see their art. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on social media. IF... Second full length solo record by David Heatley Available on all streaming and digital platforms March 24, 2023 from Dream Puppy Records. Genre: Indie Pop All songs were written, performed, and produced by David Heatley in 2023. They were recorded at Piety Street Arnaudville Studio. Additional recording took place at Restoration Sound with engineer Lorenzo Wolff. String, horn and woodwind arrangements were done by Jimbo Walsh. The assistant engineer was Kirkland Middleton. The album was mastered by Dave Glasser of Airshow. Featuring members of Lost Bayou Ramblers and Givers, plus Julie Odell, Sarah Quintana, Lilli Lewis and Tony Award-winner Michael Cerveris. Heatley describes “If...” as a portrait of someone in the throes of “impossible love,” with all the attendant euphoria and longing pulsing beneath each track. “I've always had an issue with crushes and falling in love. I fell in love with all three guest singers on my last record.” The bulk of the songs came to him while recording down in Louisiana for the first time in the summer of 2021, surrounded by an inspiring and passionate array of New Orleans musician-heartthrobs. What he couldn't have known was that by the time this new record was released, his personal life would be entirely rearranged and would line up in an uncanny way with many of the themes of the songs he had written. “It's honestly eerie how prescient some of these songs turned out to be. I've often gotten song ideas in my dreams and I write them out and record them only to see how they perfectly fit some situation I'm living through years later. It's enough to make you believe in Carl Jung's theory of the archetypal field.”     David's Info https://www.davidheatley.com

Stuart Heatley is Managing Director at Capita Pensions where he is a Business Transformation and Growth Leader.  He previously held a series of similar roles at AON and Scottish Life.  Based in Edinburgh, Stuart is passionate about creating access to the financial services industry for people of all backgrounds, and is a Mentor with MCR Pathways. Our conversation starts with Stuart's own unconventional path, where he turned his back on a typical university path and followed his passions for music (playing bass in a band) and sport before finding a role in an insurance company in Edinburgh.  He joined at "the bottom of the ladder" and spent his early days splitting paper and delivering it around the firm and then moved into a junior administrator role in pensions.  His career progressed from then to leadership roles, and the rest might be said to be history.  Stuart talks about the role that listening, talking to colleagues, stepping up for new opportunities to take responsibilities and other inter-personal skills played in his career progression. Stuart talks about the importance of being good at problem-solving vs. problem-finding and when discussing what is at the forefront of his mind now as he helps clients navigate the environment for pensions, he mentions the role of digitization as well as the problem of getting beneficiaries to engage. We turn then to talk about a topic that has been a driver for Stuart throughout his career, which is about offering opportunities in the workplace to "cv-less" talent, that has not come through the normal qualification channels. He notes that there is a talent pool that has been missed for a long time, and details initiatives he has put in place in his workplaces to address this over the years. He cites the importance of support and encouragement throughout one's career, especially in the early years and the role played by mentoring and coaching. Some of the highs of Stuart's career derived working with great teams, and we discuss the importance of this and how sometimes leaving a great team can be a low point, but is the normal progression of our work-lives. He started a few bands, like The Velvet Cactus Society and The Bischoffs. Both bands were fun, junkyard-y kind of bands. But when David kind of took creative control, he figured his next project should probably be a solo project. But in addition to his music, David has been a very successful illustrator. We're joined by the multi-talented David Heatley from the comfort of his car. He was kind enough to chat with me about his incredibly varied career. Music was very important to him early on. He started a few bands, like The Velvet Cactus Society and The Bischoffs. Both bands were fun, junkyard-y kind of bands. But when David kind of took creative control, he figured his next project should probably be a solo project. But in addition to his music, David has been a very successful illustrator. His creativity tends to cycle between being introverted to create his art until he starts feeling the need to be extroverted and perform. It's served him well.  David also tells us how he would reach out to artists he admired and send them his work. It's worked to his benefit on many occasions; the latest being his new album, Life Our Own Way. He wrote to legendary producer Mark Bingham. That led to conversations. That led to demos, which led to studio sessions, which led to the new album.  David's new album has just come out and he's already working on the next one. And just in case he wasn't busy enough, he's working on TV shows, including one based on his addiction to 12 step programs. Give him a follow @davidheatley. Buy the new album, Life Our Own Way.
