Dr. Giles Yeo, Cambridge University Professor, author of "Why Calories Don't Count," and Chief Science Advisor at Rio demolishes weight management myths with scientific precision and personal warmth. This mind-shifting conversation reveals why blaming people for obesity fundamentally misunderstands human biology. Full disclosure: I am also an advisor for Rio but I only work with companies I believe in and would use for myself and my family.Bold scientific insights abound as Dr. Yeo reveals why simple calorie counting fails. Rather than fixating on calories, he advocates understanding how different foods affect our bodies uniquely, making a compelling case for cooking at home with quality ingredients as his personal health strategy. The discussion ventures into today's most transformative weight management tools, with Dr. Yeo describing GLP-1 medications as the most effective treatment options he's encountered in 30 years of obesity research. These medications signal fullness to the brain, but surprisingly affect other reward-seeking behaviors too - from alcohol consumption to addictive tendencies. The conversation explores fascinating frontiers in brain science, including Dr. Yeo's groundbreaking work mapping human hypothalamus feeding circuits, and examines how AI-assisted health applications might revolutionize personalized nutrition. Throughout, his compassionate message resonates: obesity isn't a character flaw - it's the result of biological and environmental factors that require understanding, not judgment. Discover why this disco-dancing geneticist believes personalized approaches, not quick fixes, are the future of health optimization.https://rio.life/Free sample chapter -Lies I Taught In Medical School : https://www.robertlufkinmd.com/lies/Complete Metabolic Heart Scan (20% off with 'LUFKIN20') https://www.innerscopic.com/Fasting Mimicking Diet (20% off) https://prolonlife.com/Lufkin At home blood testing (15% off) https://pathlongevity.com/Mimio Health (15% off with 'LUFKIN') https://mimiohealth.sjv.io/c/5810114/2745519/30611 *** CONNECT***Web: https://robertlufkinmd.com/X: https://x.com/robertlufkinmdYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/robertLufkinmdInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/robertlufkinmd/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/robertlufkinmd/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/robertlufkinmd Threads: https://www.threads.net/@robertlufkinmdBluesky: ...
Tried everything to lose weight and nothing's working? It's not your fault. According to geneticist Giles Yeo, your body is hardwired to hold onto fat—especially as you age. Yeo breaks down why your metabolism slows, how your genes shape your hunger, and why exercise isn't the fat-loss fix you think it is. If you've been eating better, moving more, and still not seeing results… this is the science-backed reality check you've been waiting for. Send us a textShort Summary: The science of obesity and appetite regulation, blending genetics and neurobiology with practical insightsAbout the guest: Giles Yeo, PhD is a professor of molecular neuroendocrinology at the University of Cambridge. He leads a lab studying obesity and appetite regulation.Note: Podcast episodes are fully available to paid subscribers on the M&M Substack and everyone on YouTube. Partial versions are available elsewhere. Full transcript and other information on Substack.Episode Summary: Nick interviews Dr. Giles Yeo about the genetics and neurobiology of obesity, starting with the discovery of leptin in the obese mouse model, detailing its role in appetite regulation via the hypothalamus, and discussing GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic for weight loss. It delves into how genetic factors, like the leptin-melanocortin pathway, influence hunger, the heritability of body weight, and societal factors driving the obesity epidemic, emphasizing the interplay of biology and environment.Key Takeaways:Leptin, discovered through the obese mouse, signals fat levels to the brain, but its absence causes severe obesity and infertility, as seen in rare human mutations. The hypothalamus, a key brain region, senses hormones like leptin and GLP-1, balancing hunger and satiety through POMC (anorexigenic) and AgRP (orexigenic) neurons.Body weight heritability is 40-70% at the population level, but this does not mean that 40-70% of someone's body fat composition is due to genetic factors outside human control. Dr. Yeo unpacks how to think about it.GLP-1 drugs (e.g., Ozempic) mimic gut hormones to reduce appetite, offering some people 15-25% weight loss, but require long-term safety monitoring.According to Dr. Yeo, obesity reflects energy imbalance, but nutritional density matters more than calorie counting for health, and societal changes are needed to prevent it.Related episode:M&M #132: Obesity Epidemic, Diet, Metabolism, Saturated Fat vs. PUFAs, Energy Expenditure, Weight Gain & FeediSupport the showAll episodes, show notes, transcripts, etc. at the M&M Substack Affiliates: Lumen device to optimize your metabolism for weight loss or athletic performance. It's Wednesday, January 29th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark North Korea tortures, publicly executes, imprisons Christians The Database Center for North Korean Human Rights released their 2024 White Paper on Religious Freedom in North Korea. The research is based on the accounts of North Koreans who defected to South Korea. It includes over 15,000 responses and over 2,000 cases of persecution. Ninety-six percent of respondents said that religious activities are not permitted in North Korea. And only 5% report having seen religious items like a Bible. Yeo-sang Yoon, director of the North Korean Human Rights Archives, noted, “Right now, people [of faith] are being tortured, sent to concentration camps, or publicly executed.” North Korea remains the worst country on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most difficult to be a Christian. Young Brits more likely to have Christian faith than be atheist OnePoll released a survey this month entitled, “Belief in Britain.” The study of 10,000 people found atheism is losing influence on younger generations. Only 13% of those aged 18-24 identify as atheist compared to 25% of those aged 45-64. Younger people were also the most likely to identify as religious, meaning they worship regularly and ascribe to a specific belief system. DeepSeek, a Chinese AI, beats ChatGBT DeepSeek, a Chinese artificial intelligence company, released a large language model last week. The Artificial Intelligence assistant quickly outperformed ChatGPT in downloads at the Apple App Store. DeepSeek's app surprised experts, performing better than American AI chatbots despite being produced with less money and computing power. The news sent the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite down 3% on Monday. U.S. chipmaker Nvidia led the losses, dropping 17% or nearly $600 billion in market value. It's the largest one-day loss for any company. Trump bans woke gender ideology from military President Donald Trump signed executive orders on Monday to keep radical gender ideology and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives out of the military. Trump noted, “Consistent with the military mission and longstanding [Dept. of Defense] policy, expressing a false ‘gender identity' divergent from an individual's sex cannot satisfy the rigorous standards necessary for military service.” Trump's orders also offer reinstatement for troops who faced expulsion for not getting the COVID-19 shot during the pandemic. Supreme Court considers a religious charter school case Last Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear a case involving the first publicly funded religious charter school. Oklahoma's state school board approved a Catholic church to open a charter school. St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School was set to begin classes in August 2023. But the state's supreme court ruled against the approval. The case is now before the U.S. Supreme Court. Jim Campbell with Alliance Defending Freedom said, “The U.S. Constitution protects St. Isidore's freedom to operate according to its faith and supports the board's decision to approve such learning options for Oklahoman families.” California ends prosecution of two pro-life activists Praise God! The state of California agreed to end its prosecution of two pro-life activists on Monday. David Daleiden and Sandra Merritt have faced years of litigation and millions of dollars in fines for their pro-life work. Their undercover videos exposed Planned Parenthood's illegal sale of the body parts of aborted babies. David and Sandra shared the videos through their organization The Center for Medical Progress. David said, “After enduring nine years of weaponized political prosecution, putting an end to the lawfare launched by Kamala Harris is a huge victory for my investigative reporting and for the public's right to know the truth about Planned Parenthood's sale of aborted baby body parts. Now we all must get to work to protect families and infants from the criminal abortion-industrial complex.” Proverbs 24:11 says, “Deliver those who are drawn toward death, and hold back those stumbling to the slaughter.” Christians minister to victims of California fires And finally, Christians continue to provide relief to those affected by wildfires in California. CBN's Operation Blessing is working with local first responders and churches to bring long-term assistance. In the midst of suffering and loss, pastors are seeing a surge in church attendance. Listen to a comment from Pastor Steve Wilburn of Core Church LA to CBN News. WILBURN: “We're seeing people come into the church, and we're seeing hurting people. You know, it's been said in times past. You know, if you're going to speak to hurting people, you're never going to run out of people to speak to. But we're seeing people make commitments to Christ. That's what we're seeing.” In Matthew 11:28, Jesus said, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Wednesday, January 29th, in the year of our Lord 2025. In this special episode of The Korea Pro Podcast, Jeongmin sits down with Andrew Yeo to analyze the implications of a second Trump presidency for the U.S.-South Korea alliance. The discussion examines how South Korean policymakers might be preparing for various scenarios and their impact on regional security dynamics. The conversation delves into potential shifts in the U.S. Forces Korea's role and mission under a second Trump administration. Yeo discusses how USFK could face greater pressure for strategic flexibility in regional contingencies, particularly as Washington increasingly prioritizes China and broader Indo-Pacific challenges. Turning to economic concerns, Yeo breaks down the risks of Trump's proposed blanket tariffs on trade partners and their potential impact on South Korean investments in the U.S., particularly in sectors like semiconductors and electric vehicle batteries. The discussion examines how South Korean companies might need to reassess their U.S. investment strategies, and explores potential strategies for managing trade tensions. Looking ahead, they discuss broader implications for U.S. global leadership and what Trump's electoral success reveals about American voters' embrace of economic nationalism. Yeo suggests that while some of Trump's policies may endure after he leaves office, the U.S. will likely remain an “indispensable partner” in regional security despite evolving domestic political dynamics. Their discussion also touches on how future South Korean administrations might navigate these evolving dynamics, especially given domestic political transitions expected in the coming years. Guest: Andrew Yeo is a Senior Fellow at the Foreign Policy Center for East Asia Policy Studies and SK-Korea Foundation Chair in Korean Studies at The Brookings Institution. About the podcast: The Korea Pro Podcast is a weekly 15-minute conversation hosted by Editorial Director Jeongmin Kim (@jeongminnkim) and Editor John Lee (@koreanforeigner), diving deep into the most pressing stories shaping South Korea — and dissecting the most complicated ones for professionals monitoring ROK politics, diplomacy, culture, society and technology. Uploaded every Friday. This episode was recorded on Monday, Nov. 25, 2024 Audio edited by Gaby Magnuson

fWotD Episode 2710: River Parrett Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Saturday, 5 October 2024 is River Parrett. The River Parrett flows through the counties of Dorset and Somerset in South West England, from its source in the Thorney Mills springs in the hills around Chedington in Dorset. Flowing northwest through Somerset and the Somerset Levels to its mouth at Burnham-on-Sea, into the Bridgwater Bay nature reserve on the Bristol Channel, the Parrett and its tributaries drain an area of 660 square miles (1,700 km2) – about 50 per cent of Somerset's land area, with a population of 300,000.The Parrett's main tributaries include the Rivers Tone, Isle, and Yeo, and the River Cary via the King's Sedgemoor Drain. The 37-mile (60 km) long river is tidal for 19 miles (31 km) up to Oath. The fall of the river between Langport and Bridgwater is only 1 foot per mile (0.2 m/km), so it is prone to frequent flooding in winter and during high tides. Many approaches have been tried since at least the medieval period to reduce the incidence and effect of floods and to drain the surrounding fields. In Anglo-Saxon times the river formed a boundary between Wessex and Dumnonia. It later served the Port of Bridgwater, and enabled cargoes to be transported inland. The arrival of the railways led to a decline in commercial shipping, and the only working docks are at Dunball. Human influence on the river has left a legacy of bridges and industrial artefacts. The Parrett along with its connected waterways and network of drains supports an ecosystem that includes several rare species of flora and fauna. The River Parrett Trail has been established along the banks of the river. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:30 UTC on Saturday, 5 October 2024.For the full current version of the article, see River Parrett on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Ivy.

Episode 145In the grand halls of Buckingham Palace, the unveiling of King Charles's latest royal portrait was nothing short of a spectacle. The room buzzed with anticipation, aristocrats and art critics alike whispering in hushed tones. As the velvet curtain was drawn back, revealing the artwork, gasps echoed through the room. There, emerging from what looked suspiciously like a bath of blood, was King Charles himself, with only his hands and face visible above the crimson tide. The artist, Jonathan Yeo, stood beside his creation, beads of sweat dotting his forehead. His hands shook slightly as he attempted to explain his inspiration. He nervously explained his attempt to capture the essence of His Majesty's reign and the deep, historical roots of the monarchy. One couldn't help but wonder if Yeo had tapped into the blood of Britain's ancient dalliance with empires long past. Was it the essence of 250 years of conquest and colonialism that stained the canvas so vividly? Or perhaps it was just the result of a particularly overzealous session with a bottle of Bordeaux.Spectators marveled, some with morbid fascination, others with barely concealed horror. Was this a portrait or a scene from a vampire novel? It looked like he was about to rise from the depths and start a new reign of terror. As the audience continued to take in the ominous scene, one question hung in the air: Was King Charles sending a message to the world, "Don't fuck with me?" With a portrait that seemed more like a dire warning than a royal tribute, it was hard not to imagine the king himself giving a sly, blood-tinged grin and nodding ever so slightly.Despite Yeo's evident nervousness, the portrait seemed to encapsulate an eerie truth: the monarchy, drenched in the blood-red history of its conquests, still holds a spectral power. As King Charles's eyes seemed to follow each guest around the room, a shiver ran down their spines. Was this art, or an omen? One thing was clear: Yeo's masterpiece would be remembered, though perhaps not for the reasons he intended.Keep on downloading people.Thank you all again.Darren.Music: The Rolling Stones - Paint it BlackNeil Young - The PainterSupport the Show.Insta@justpassingthroughpodcastContact:justpassingthroughpodcast@gmail.comArtwork @digitalnomadicart on Insta

No pod this week, but written report below, also enjoy one of our favourite pods: Nick Injury crisis - Taranto, Ross, Short - around 40% of salary cap injured (both quality and quantity, young, old and mid career players) Great start (again) Opposition string of unanswered goals (again) McAuliffe flashes Lefau showed power and some forward craft in air and on ground, tough match up, has big hands even for 195cm Dow - needed more Almost Jack 2010 levels of dependency on Shai Baker in very good form Young/Miller step back from last week Eagles young brigade damaging - Yeo, McGovern, Kelly, Duggan Wanted more from Brown and Campbell Nice to see Steely warm up with team as emergency as part of large WA contingency Loved Vlossy's hanger VFL competitive but undermanned away vs good Werribee team (lacked any AFL listed onballers) Ryan v.good as fwd/ruck, Naismith dominating fwiw Kaleb Smith good without being dominant Glad for the bye Andy TT going out felt like one of the last foundational supports being lost, I was surprised that we were still relatively strong favourites at the bounce The game was clearly lost in the midfield -23 in clearances, -7 in centre clearances and -21 in inside 50s. As discussed in the preview, WCE actually has a mature and talented midfield. Injuries obviously a disaster: the entire starting midfield, both key forwards, CHB and in-game injury to short. All 5 of our last B&F winners. Stat nerds like us generally believe that over the long run clubs have the same amount of injury 'luck', however, this year is testing the belief. Judson injury after being sent back on with a obviously injured leg is a terrible look, whatever the truth of the matter. Bye doesn't help that much, maybe Hopper and Grimes a possibility. Lynch's return date remains 10-12 weeks away. On the game -Pity they didn't end the game after the Flossy mark, we were up by 4 goals at the time. -Nice game from Lefau, hard to calibrate the future of a 25 YO, 4th game key position player playing on a team getting smashed in the midfield. But good on him for taking his chance. -Nank was dominate in the rucks but it was for naught . 13 CPs too. Having a career best year in tackles, clearances and CPs -Dow hopefully not fully fit, because he's struggling otherwise. -MJR another solid game, great goal. Disposal, tackle and goal stats all up this year. -Young and Miller struggled, exposed by the midfield struggles. -Tougher day at the office for Brown as well. Only 7 touches. Kaps may be in trouble. Kosi not taking his chance. However, to finish on a high note: Flossy leads the league in total intercepts, also going at 88% (!) for 22 disposals a game. The early AA talk is justified.
Locked On Zags - Daily Podcast On Gonzaga Bulldogs Basketball
Jun Seok Yeo's first season with the Gonzaga Bulldogs was quiet, as the South Korean forward didn't earn a spot in Mark Few's rotation and averaged less than seven minutes per game for the Zags in Spokane. However, his best and worst case scenarios for this season were always going to be determined behind the scenes, and how he comes out in 2024-25 will help determine if he spent this season growing and developing his game.Of course, Yeo will have to stick around this offseason - and that might not happen when considering the likelihood he is not in the rotation again next season with basically the entire team returning and Michael Ajayi expected to take minutes at the three and the four. Will Yeo enter the transfer portal or go play professionally overseas? Or will he come back and continue to grow in Gonzaga's system?FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. Diplomats, policy-makers and experts gathered at the Brussels Indo-Pacific Dialogue, hosted by our partners at the Center for Security, Diplomacy and Strategy.Participants shared their insights on the key issues that make this moment arguably the most consequential since World War II: conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, trade wars, supply chains, economic security, artificial intelligence, and more. To better understand what's at stake, CSDS-Asia Matters' Andrew Peaple traveled to Brussels to speak with several panelists. Highlights include Ambassador Caroline Millar of Australia explaining how she sees the strategic partnership with the European Union, beyond NATO and other alliances; Taiwan's representative to the EU, Roy Chun Lee, talked about Europe's approach to the One China policy and trade security; Han-koo Yeo, a former trade minister of South Korea, shared his views on globalization and inter-reliance. Andrew also spoke with Charles Edel from the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Alan Chong from the Rajaratnam School of International Studies in Singapore, Anit Mukherjee from the India Institute at King's College London, and Cheng Ting-Fang, Chief Tech Correspondent for Nikkei Asia.
How can the arts help cultivate our intuitive intelligence? What does visual art teach us about consciousness and the human condition? Jonathan Yeo is one of the world's leading figurative artists and portrait painters. From celebrated figures such as Sir David Attenborough, peace activist Malala Yousafzai, the Duke of Edinburgh, Nicole Kidman, and Tony Blair, sitting for a portrait with Yeo is a provisional necessity for any 21st century icon. His work, which has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, is the subject of several major mid-career retrospectives in the UK and internationally. Yeo's course on portrait painting is available now on BBC Maestro."I'm optimistic about education. There will likely be more traffic between technology and the arts. The tech world needs more creative-minded people and less literal people who have some understanding of how things work. With Jony Ive, you've got someone who designed the iPhone and was very interested in photography himself. We were talking about doing a portrait. He mentioned that he'd been fascinated by self-portraiture as a kid, so much so that when he was doing his industrial design degree, he wrote his thesis on artists' self-portraits. Fast forward a few years, and we are all taking photos every day and learning really fast how to compose images and read images and why they've been cropped in a certain way. All these things, which were probably the preserve of artists and art historians in the past, are suddenly things that kids are thinking about because it's the way they communicate with each other. So I think that that shift is interesting."www.jonathanyeo.comwww.bbcmaestro.comwww.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcastImages courtesy of Jonathan Yeo

"What are you trying to do with the portrait? On a basic level, you're trying to communicate something about the essence of who someone is. You're trying to figure out who they are, not necessarily who they present themselves as. The two things can quite often be different. And then, you're trying to find ways of showing that through their face, their posture, or any other context. My instinct is always to try to reduce down to the essential elements. We read faces. It's obviously very, very deep in our DNA, really our survival instinct. We are programmed to read faces in a very fine-tuned way.Painting is a two-dimensional thing. You're basically taking real, three-dimensional things and making them into fake, two-dimensional ones. When you get into the 3D space, some of those distinctions aren't there anymore. I remember when I showed David Hockney the VR project I'd been working on a few years ago, and he put his finger on this quite well. Most art is about perspective. Certainly, for what he is interested in. As soon as you see something in 3D, whether it's a physical sculpture or a virtual object, that's not there anymore because you're in the space with whatever's being shown, so you're in a very different place."Jonathan Yeo is one of the world's leading figurative artists and portrait painters. Locked On Zags - Daily Podcast On Gonzaga Bulldogs Basketball
Mark Few and the Gonzaga Bulldogs blasted Arkansas Pine Bluff 111-71 on Tuesday at The Kennel, jumping out to a 32-4 lead and never letting the Golden Lions within 25 points. It allowed the Zags to play more of their bench, and somewhat surprisingly we saw Jun Seok Yeo start in place of Dusty Stromer as well - once again giving the team more lineups to play with.Braden Huff was the star once again, dropping 19 points with seven rebounds and three blocks, while Graham Ike had 17. Yeo had 10 points on 4-6 shooting, mostly in the second half, while Luka Krajnovic had seven points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists and we even saw Pavle Stosic add four points in about ten minutes, although he also had three turnovers as you could see his inexperience show through. Finally, we close out the show discussing Isiah Harwell, a top ten prospect in the class of 2024, who is down to nine schools but many believe will choose between the Zags and North Carolina - Harwell also spoke recently about his upcoming visit to Spokane in February and what he hopes to learn from that trip. Lastly, the Zags made an offer to 2025 four-star prospect Efeosa Oliogu who has already taken an official visit to Maryland, but whose Canadian roots could entice him to head west to Spokane.Discord Server: https://discord.gg/HJ4MdCMt2WLink to national college basketball national podcast: https://linktr.ee/LockedOncbbhttps://linktr.ee/LockedOnZagsLocked on Zags - Part of the Locked on Podcast Network.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!BirddogsGo to birddogs.com/lockedoncollege or enter promo code LOCKEDONCOLLEGE for a free water bottle with any purchase.
It allowed the Zags to play more of their bench, and somewhat surprisingly we saw Jun Seok Yeo start in place of Dusty Stromer as well - once again giving the team more lineups to play with. Braden Huff was the star once again, dropping 19 points with seven rebounds and three blocks, while Graham Ike had 17. Lastly, the Zags made an offer to 2025 four-star prospect Efeosa Oliogu who has already taken an official visit to Maryland, but whose Canadian roots could entice him to head west to Spokane. A debate about whether perfume should be classified a basic necessity or aspirational good took place in Parliament this week, as part of a discussion about what constitutes a minimum living standard in Singapore. Why does Jamus Lim think so highly of perfume? Elsewhere, the use of LKY's likeness in LKY100 campaigns came under scrutiny this week, as people questioned whether Yeo's packet drinks bearing his image would be disposed of properly and respectfully.
