In case you missed it, we recently interviewed Nick Baird, as part of our Jericho Conversations series. We explored Britain's evolving role in global affairs, examining its past, present, and future trajectory. If, in 1946 Britain had lost an empire but was yet to find a role, things are now even more complex for a medium-sized nation trying to go it alone in a very volatile world. Nick drew from his rich experience as Chair of the Trade Remedies Authority, former UK Ambassador to Turkey, and Chief Executive Officer of UK Trade & Investment. Jericho Partner Matthew Gwyther asked Nick to share his unique insights into the complex narratives surrounding Britain's foreign policy, exploring how historical perspectives have shaped its contemporary role on the world stage.Jericho Conversations is one of a number of initiatives that spontaneously emerged during the first COVID lockdown – part of a determination to use moments of crisis to pivot towards a better, fairer, more equitable and sustainable future for all. By popular demand, we have reignited the series to help find surprising and refreshing solutions and insights into a world in constant flux. Each conversation – led by an expert speaker – is designed to keep Jericho communities engaged and thinking about “what comes next?” for business and society.

Is there a glimmer of light at the end of the (Channel) tunnel for young Britons wanting to travel more freely in Europe? This week's headlines hinting at a Youth Mobility Scheme suggest there may well be, and polling tells us that even old Brexity types aren't against helping Generation Z win back some of the European travel freedoms that us oldies took for granted before You Know What happened. Naomi Smith reads the runes and finds a policy that could help young people and be broadly popular too – with Europe as well as the UK. And she explains why her team at Best For Britain is backing a reciprocal EU-UK Youth Mobility Scheme, one of 114 recommendations published by the cross-party UK Trade and Business Commission last year. According to David Henig, after the turmoil of Brexit culminating in the short period of Liz Truss as Prime Minister, UK politics appears to have stabilised to a degree under Rishi Sunak, with the Windsor Framework and likely accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) being clear successes. Underlying issues around the Brexit settlement are however far from settled, poor economic performance being the backdrop for continued arguments over EU-UK relations that easily come to the surface, such as recently with Boris Johnson's resignation statement as an MP. Viewing a General Election as being likely during 2024, David Henig assesses what the current Conservative Government is likely to be able to achieve, and the priorities of a potential future Labour Government. About the Speaker: David Henig is Director of the UK Trade Policy Project at the think-tank, European Centre for International Political Economy (ECIPE), writing extensively on the trade implications of Brexit and what comes next for UK trade policy. For ECIPE, he has also written a series of short papers on globalisation and modern trade, and writes about broader trade issues in a weekly column for specialist trade news service Borderlex. David serves as Expert Adviser to the UK Trade and Business Commission and House of Lords International Agreements Committee. Prior to joining ECIPE in March 2018, he worked for the UK Government including on Transatlantic Trade Investment Partnership (TTIP) talks between the US and the EU, in establishing the Department for International Trade after the referendum, and on issues around inward investments from China.

Having introduced a legally binding target to achieve net zero by 2050 and with the Environment Act – designed to enforce UK environmental standards – now on the statute book, the UK government is proud of its green achievements. But does the UK's post-Brexit independent trade policy live up to its domestic environmental commitments? Earlier this year the UK agreed to omit references to temperature goals committed to in the Paris Agreement in order to secure a free trade agreement with Australia – an agreement which, on the government's own analysis, will result in increased use of scarce natural resources and increased waste. So does the UK need to do more to position its environmental goals at the heart of its trade policy or would this hinder the UK's ability to strike deals across the globe? Can trade policy help deliver positive gains for the environment? And should the UK government set out an overarching trade policy to bring consistency and coherence to its trade deals? To answer these questions, and to explore what goals UK trade policy is – or ought to be – serving, the Institute for Government was delighted to bring together an expert panel including: Sir Martin Donnelly, former Permanent Secretary for the Department for International Trade (DIT) and for the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (now BEIS) Dmitry Grozoubinski, Director of ExplainTrade Anna Sands, Trade Policy Specialist at WWF UK Chris Southworth, Secretary General of the International Chamber of Commerce The event was chaired by Jill Rutter, Senior Fellow at the Institute for Government. #IfGTrade We would like to thank WWF UK for supporting this event.

I am an aspiring rapper/musician from South Africa, Soweto. Ever since I was a youngster, I had been in love with music. I started writing poetry when I was in primary school, and my poem got featured in a literature book. It was in the 5th grade if my memory serves me well. My genre of choice is Hip-Hop, which was inspired by other genres of music ofcorse. My dream is to bring together my passion for music and business. Creating jingles (soundtracks) for well established companies/individuals is where I hope to be one day. One step at a time. Further to being an aspiring musician, I have a love for business and education. I completed my Bcom Marketing Management degree at the Pearson Institute of Higher Education the end of 2014. I then also completed my Honours in Business Sciences (Marketing) at the University of the Witwatersrand, of which I am excited about. Through my internship at the UK Trade & Investment company, I have gained office administration experience in activities such as; conducting research, capturing client information on a database called the CRM (Customer Relationship Management) system, making telephone calls to clients, and providing assistance in the process of planning events. The internship has enhanced my communication skills, through interacting with clients, as well as colleagues in the workplace. I participated in boardroom meetings, which has given me an overview of what to expect in the workplace. I've also worked at other high profile companies as well. My interests are; meeting new business partners, interacting with my supporters/fans on Facebook, and making quality music. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
