Welcome dear listener to the latest episode. I'm Paul and I am joined by Daz. The Reds beat Leicester 3-1 last Thursday and played another tough one against West Ham on Sunday - just the 5 goals this time. We are at the top of the Premier League with a game in hand - 14 points clear of City, 9 from Arsenal (same games) and 10 from Chelsea. We'll review those games and then talk about the upcoming Premier League game against Man United plus a look around the league. Part One - Leicester City at home - xG 1.91 vs 0.34 Conceding early again, but it felt different. Lot of pressure, didn't necessarily count in xG ‘Abject' said James Pearce in the first half. Really… Maybe too many crosses, maybe a little too rushed. Second half - so much movement, Jones! 17 fouls against us to 5! With 68% possession. Szobo yellow card. Darren Bond doing a solid Coote/Oliver/Tierney impression. The VAR stuff was weird CSI in its intensity. Gakpo 2nd, Nunes doesn't touch the ball. Cody Gakpo and Mo's goals - woof! Part two - West Ham away - xG 3.09 to 0.32. 7 shots from West Ham, Sean Rogers tells us that title winning teams concede less than 10 on average. Difficult fixture for us this one - well at least on paper. Surprised the ground was so full at the end - assume they expected this. Started great, but West Ham were easy to play through. Areola started like Yashin and eventually reverted to the mean Luis Diaz finish, Joe Gomez injury, Kudus at 1-0, Then some Mo magic. Mac Allister with the most pressures (regain led to Mo's goal). Second half, unusually low key - Trent. Mo's 10 chances, the Jota goal…. Word on Antony Taylor - no cards, 10 fouls against us, and 7 against them. Part three - elsewhere and look ahead Man United on the horizon… they were actually abject in the first half against Newcastle, More on Mo Salah - Passed Beckham and Henry to be 10th for the all time EPL assists. One behind Thierry Henry for goals - 8th, could get to 4th by the end of the season. 8 games with a goal and an assist - most ever in the Premier League and he's got 20 games to go. NBC's Rebecca Lowe insistent that Mo is nowhere near the best player in the Premier League era - WTF But is he as good as Cole Palmer? Contracts - Bascombe, La Marca, AS We will be back January 13th ish with a review of United at home and the various cup games, looking ahead to 2 potentially season defining away games at Forest and Brentford. PRESS REVIEW – Thursday, October 17: Ilya Yashin, one of Vladimir Putin's main opponents, speaks to a French daily just months after his release from prison. Elsewhere, Italy bans couples from travelling abroad for surrogacy, with many saying the move unfairly impacts gay couples. Plus, an assisted dying bill is introduced in Westminster, with opinions polarised. Finally, one newspaper reveals why you should always say "hello" at work.
Russian exiles in the West may not be able to change, let alone save, their home country, which is locked in the grip of the Putin autocracy, at war in Ukraine, and in a long conflict with the United States. Yet the exiles are important beyond the realm of politics because their minds and talents enrich Western societies. In this episode, historian Michael Kimmage and Russian journalist and political scientist Maria Lipman, an exile herself, contend "the opposition has no chance of acquiring power in Russia in the foreseeable future." At the same time, Western political leaders and societies must avoid projecting their own beliefs onto the exiles, who find themselves in a very difficult position criticizing their home government from afar. Russian dissident activists and scholars Ilya Budraitskis and Grusha Gilayeva last spoke to us after the Marxist critic Boris Kagarlitsky lost his appeal and was sent to a penal colony on a trumped-up charge of “justifying terrorism.” A few days later, Alexei Navalny died. Suzi talks to Ilya and Grusha to get their views about the complex multi-prisoner swap that happened at the start of this month and what it represents.Kremlin spies, sleepers, and killers imprisoned in the west were exchanged for prisoners held in Russia's penal colonies, including Americans Evan Gershkovich and Paul Whelan, British-Russian Vladimir Kara Murza, and Russians Ilya Yashin, Oleg Orlov and others. Sixteen have been exchanged. More than a thousand are still in prison. Millions remain in Russia. Of the Russian prisoners, Ilya Yashin was forcibly removed from Russia and exchanged against his will. Vladimir Kara Murza has vowed to return to Russia. We'll hear more about the politically courageous Russians who were held (and now exchanged) for speaking out against Putin's savage war in Ukraine like Yashin, Orlov, and Kara Murza. We'll also ask what it means for Putin: will he continue to hold hostage human “assets” to be exchanged? Does the timing of the exchange signal Putin favors a Harris presidency over another Trump term?Jacobin Radio with Suzi Weissman features conversations with leading thinkers and activists, with a focus on labor, the economy, and protest movements. Michael Santos joins the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast to talk about Erik Karlsson!Santos (27:00) brings 17 years of NHL front office experience to the discussion, and brings that perspective to these questions: What are the positives and negatives of Karlsson starting the season with the San Jose Sharks? Before we get to Santos, Keegan McNally and Sheng Peng chat about the Andy Strickland report that the Sharks offered Vladimir Tarasenko $6 million (2:55).Why does Keegan want to retain as little as possible on Karlsson (7:15)? Sheng and Keegan talked about the risk-reward of bringing Karlsson back (10:00). What do the San Jose Sharks owe Karlsson (10:55)? What about the injury risk (15:55)? Sheng talks to multiple league sources about the less obvious risks (17:45).There is an upside to keeping Karlsson -- Sheng offered a couple historical examples of this (21:38).Now, Michael Santos (27:00)!What is Santos hearing about a Karlsson trade (28:28)? He believes the Sharks should hold out for a premium for Karlsson.Santos shares his career path -- from 1997 to 2014, he worked in the New York Islanders, Florida Panthers, and Nashville Predators front offices (29:20). He then gives background about the formation of independent professional scouting service, Team 33 (35:45), and what makes his hockey operations management program stand out.Santos then explains the Team 33 Value Score (44:20), and shares Erik Karlsson, Logan Couture, Danil Gushchin, Thomas Bordeleau, and William Eklund's scores.Santos shares why he wouldn't be concerned about the San Jose Sharks bringing Karlsson back next season (59:20). Is he concerned about the player buy-in when he doesn't want to be around (1:05:00)? Santos shared his experience being on the other side of a player wanting out: He was an Assistant GM with the Islanders when they acquired a disgruntled Alexei Yashin from the Ottawa Senators.Santos talks about the possible upside of GM Mike Grier sticking to his guns with Karlsson (1:08:00).Santos also shares his opinion about this wild scenario: The San Jose Sharks and Karlsson agree to a contract termination, so Karlsson can sign where he wants (1:12:10).Santos predicts that the San Jose Sharks will trade Karlsson before training camp (1:17:45).Finally, Santos dives into some of his brushes with Sharks history: He reveals the Islanders wanted to trade up for No. 2 in the 1997 Draft (1:19:12). He recalls being in the Dallas Stars pressbox in Nov. 2005 when the Sharks traded for Joe Thornton (1:22:05). He also recollects the day when the Islanders traded for Yashin and Michael Peca (1:24:20).Santos shares plans about how fans can subscribe to Team 33 (1:33:45).Listen to the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast — it's a new link — on Apple Podcasts and Spotify and Google Podcasts.Subscribe to the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast YouTube channel, we're trying to get over 1K subscribers! ★ Support this podcast ★

A new research paper was published in Aging (Aging-US) Volume 15, Issue 9, entitled, “Exogenous exposures shape genetic predisposition to lipids, Alzheimer's, and coronary heart disease in the MLXIPL gene locus.” In this new study, researchers Yury Loika, Elena Loiko, Fan Feng, Eric Stallard, Anatoliy I. Yashin, Konstantin Arbeev, Allison L. Kuipers, Mary F. Feitosa, Michael A. Province, and Alexander M. Kulminski from Duke University, University of Pittsburgh and Washington University School of Medicine examined associations of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the MLXIPL lipid gene with Alzheimer's (AD) and coronary heart disease (CHD) and potentially causal mediation effects of their risk factors, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and triglycerides (TG) in two samples of European ancestry from the United States (US) (22,712 individuals 587/2,608 AD/CHD cases) and the United Kingdom Biobank (UKB) (232,341 individuals; 809/15,269 AD/CHD cases). “Our results suggest that these associations can be regulated by several biological mechanisms and shaped by exogenous exposures.” Two patterns of associations (represented by rs17145750 and rs6967028) were identified. Minor alleles of rs17145750 and rs6967028 demonstrated primary (secondary) association with high TG (lower HDL-C) and high HDL-C (lower TG) levels, respectively. The primary association explained ~50% of the secondary one suggesting partly independent mechanisms of TG and HDL-C regulation. The magnitude of the association of rs17145750 with HDL-C was significantly higher in the US vs. UKB sample and likely related to differences in exogenous exposures in the two countries. rs17145750 demonstrated a significant detrimental indirect effect through TG on AD risk in the UKB only (βIE = 0.015, pIE = 1.9 × 10−3), which suggests protective effects of high TG levels against AD, likely shaped by exogenous exposures. Also, rs17145750 demonstrated significant protective indirect effects through TG and HDL-C in the associations with CHD in both samples. In contrast, rs6967028 demonstrated an adverse mediation effect through HDL-C on CHD risk in the US sample only (βIE = 0.019, pIE = 8.6 × 10−4). This trade-off suggests different roles of triglyceride mediated mechanisms in the pathogenesis of AD and CHD. “Finally, the results of this study suggest that genetic associations of SNPs from the MLXIPL gene locus with lipids, AD, and CHD are shaped by exogenous exposures. Further study of the related biological mechanisms can help to elucidate the related, modifiable risk factors.” DOI - https://doi.org/10.18632/aging.204665 Corresponding authors - Yury Loika - yury.loika@duke.edu, and Alexander M. Formal treason charges and denied bail for journalist Evan Gershkovich, a rejected appeal from opposition politician Ilya Yashin (who's serving an eight-and-a-half-year prison sentence for spreading supposed “disinformation” about Russian war atrocities in Ukraine), reportedly new felony charges against jailed anti-corruption icon Alexey Navalny, and 25 years behind bars for Vladimir Kara-Murza, the anti-Kremlin politician who helped lobby into existence the Magnitsky Act, which authorizes the American government to sanction foreign government officials around the world (especially in Russia) that are human rights offenders, freezing their assets and banning them from entering the U.S. These courtroom news headlines are all from just the past few days. And this doesn't even touch on the thousands of cases against less prominent, sometimes nearly invisible activists and even apolitical types who find themselves caught in the teeth of Russia's increasingly brutal prosecution of political disloyalty. As political persecution in Russia escalates to something resembling moments from the Stalinist period, supporting the legal system's victims and simply understanding its intricacies become matters of life and death. And that is at the center of work by the journalists, lawyers, and activists who make up a project called OVD-Info. To explain the organization's operations, The Naked Pravda spoke to journalist and activist Dan Storyev, who serves as the managing editor of OVD-Info's English-language edition and the author of The Dissident Digest, a weekly newsletter summarizing and explaining major events in Russia's domestic political repressions.
Lev Yashin was a Soviet-era legend, considered by many to be the best goalkeeper in the game. Scoring on Yashin was considered a career achievement and with a nickname like the Black Spider, you'll find out why. In hindsight however, although he was adored, Yashin wasn't spared a violent backlash by his fans.Support the show: https://www.aljazeera.com/podcasts/hindsight/

E., Shenkarev, Z., Lyukmanova, E., Verkhratsky, A., Semyanov, A. Abstract: How aging affects cellular components of the human brain active milieu remains largely unknown. We analyzed astrocytes and neurons in the neocortical access tissue of younger (22 - 50 years) and older (51 - 72 years) adult patients who underwent glioma resection. Aging decreased the amount of reduced mitochondrial cytochromes in astrocytes but not neurons. The total amount of protein was decreased in astrocytes and increased in neurons. Aged astrocytes showed morphological dystrophy quantified by the decreased length of branches, decreased volume fraction of leaflets, and shrinkage of the anatomical domain. Dystrophy correlated with the loss of gap junction coupling between astrocytes and increased input resistance. Aging was accompanied by the upregulation of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and downregulation of membrane-cytoskeleton linker Ezrin associated with leaflets. No significant changes in neuronal excitability or spontaneous inhibitory postsynaptic signaling were observed. Thus, brain aging is associated with the impaired morphological presence and mitochondrial malfunction of astrocytes, but not neurons. Copy rights belong to original authors.

< 26:15 > TALKING POINTS What is an intrapreneur? They are an entrepreneur who works inside an organization. They are an organization's lifeblood. Intrapreneurs often ask the difficult questions. They are likely to step up and challenge the status quo and ask, ‘Why are we doing it this way?' But they need to do a lot of groundwork so people can be ready to hear what they have to say. The intrapreneurialism movement is so important right now How can an organization foster an intrapreneurial culture? Firstly, identify the entrepreneurs. How? Profile your workforce. Secondly, give people permission to experiment, permission to think differently, permission to use their creativity, permission, to put their hand up and say, we could do this in a different or better way.
