There have been high-profile cases, such as those involving NHL players Dino Ciccarelli, Marty McSorley, and Todd Bertuzzi, who were all charged with assault for their actions during games. They also discuss a recent case in England where a player was charged with involuntary manslaughter after his skate blade cut another player's throat, resulting in his death. There is potential for both criminal and civil liability in sports. Players need to understand the potential consequences of their actions. Every hockey fan knows how it always ends for the Vancouver Canucks — no Stanley Cup — but Ed Willes digs in the corners to poke at the why, with a wry perspective. The veteran journalist (Regina Leader-Post, The Province) presents a case study, with novelistic detail, about the West Coast NHL franchise. Weaving a thread — one of instability at the top — through the history (and prehistory) of the team, Willes explains why the Canucks have fallen short of winning the Stanley Cup, but have never been boring across five-plus decades of torment. Relying on firsthand research and contemporary accounts from fellow Vancouver sports journalists, Willes provides painstaking details about the life-arcs of stars such as Henrik Sedin, Daniel Sedin, Pavel Bure, Markus Näslund, and Todd Bertuzzi. The author also playfully teases out the franchise's many what-ifs. Willes is also author of “The Rebel League: The Short and Unruly Life of the World Hockey Association” (2005) and “End Zones and Border Wars: The Era of American Expansion in the CFL” (2013).
Fr. Eric speaks about how Todd Bertuzzi became a great hockey player for the Vancouver Canucks. This is a clip from a live recording of a homily that Fr. Eric gave on Nov. 16, 2024 at St. James in Colgan, Ontario. Watch Catholic Latte on YouTube and Facebook. An audio version of the podcast is available also on Spotify, iTunes and Podbean.

In this episode of PodGis, Val laments the recent lost of a priceless cherished personal item; the recent cancellation of Just For Laughs and the concept of bankruptcy protection; an applicable, practical theory on considerate and self-aware people in public; Todd Bertuzzi; the ubiquity of hacky pronoun jokes and "I identify as" jokes in the comedy community; people who abuse the word "woke"; her "Lady and the Tramp" viewing-style suggestion; and lastly, on her vocal progress and on the act of graciously comparing your current self to your younger self.

Having squandered an opportunity for a lengthy playoff run, the Canucks face a heightened level of scrutiny. Todd Bertuzzi's contract negotiation drags into the regular season and becomes a tenuous issue internally. Vancouver and Colorado reestablish themselves as elite teams in the Western Conference, and each looks to gain the upper hand in three head-to-head matchups beginning in mid-February. Steve Moore's hit on Markus Naslund becomes a point of contention and eventually leads to an act of revenge that transcends both the rivalry and the sport itself. With Bertuzzi suspended for the rest of the season and beyond, the Canucks attempt to pull themselves together for their most important games of the campaign. Coming off their return to the playoffs, the Canucks struggle to live up to expectations early in the season after Todd Bertuzzi's suspension and an injury to Andrew Cassels hinder their top line. GM Brian Burke is celebrated for bringing Trevor Linden back to Vancouver via trade, but it's Burke's speech in late December that finally kickstarts the Canucks turnaround. In mid-January, Brendan Morrison is inserted between Markus Naslund and Bertuzzi on the first line, and the trio quickly emerges as a dominant force dubbed "The West Coast Express". Vancouver charges into the playoffs as the league's hottest team and is on track to upset top-seeded Detroit before a lucky goal becomes the catalyst for the Red Wings' comeback. Marc Crawford's first full season behind the bench in Vancouver is the last for a pair of high-profile players. The Canucks get stronger at centre by signing Andrew Cassels and trading for Brendan Morrison, but their search for stability in goal continues. Todd Bertuzzi begins to break out as an impact player, and new era begins when Markus Naslund is named captain. The Canucks sign the most prolific free agent in franchise history, Mark Messier, in an effort to vault them back into Stanley Cup contention. Vancouver struggles early and shocks the hockey world by firing President and GM, Pat Quinn, just a month into the season. In the wake of Quinn's dismissal, Mike Keenan is brought in to replace Tom Renney as head coach, and he begins to dismantle the roster shortly thereafter. Fan favourite Trevor Linden is traded to the New York Islanders in a move that both lands Todd Bertuzzi and further alienates an already disgruntled fan base. The Canucks miss the playoffs for a second straight season and are suddenly left with more questions than answers about the future of the franchise. “UNREEL: West Coast Express” is the story of the men who reinvigorated a once vibrant hockey market as told by Markus Naslund, Todd Bertuzzi, Brendan Morrison as well as other prominent teammates and figures. Written and narrated by Scott Rintoul, it is a journey from some of the darkest days in franchise history to the precipice of greatness along a path of unforgettable triumphs and defeats. Four years after nearly winning the Stanley Cup, the Vancouver Canucks were engulfed in chaos. Amidst a change in ownership, constant organizational churn and a four-year playoff drought, three unlikely stars emerged from the rubble to resuscitate the franchise. Despite none of them being drafted by the Canucks, Naslund, Bertuzzi and Morrison came to form one of hockey's most dominant lines, the West Coast Express. A nightly fixture on highlight reels, the West Coast Express turned Vancouver back into a contender, and they appeared destined for a run at the Stanley Cup before it all came undone in a matter of moments. The next day, he signed in CAL. Talked about Reel West Coast. Wants to show off the adventure that fishing is. Not only reeling in the fish but the culture, the scenery. He has been all over the place. It’s been a great success. Talked about who the better fisherman between him and Willie Mitchell.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Plot:Doug Glatt (Sean William Scott), a bouncer at a bar in Massachusetts, feels ostracized from society, especially since his father and brother are both successful physicians. Doug attends a minor league hockey game with his best friend Pat (Jay Baruchel). Pat taunts the visiting team during a fight and one of their players climbs into the stands, calling him a homosexual slur. Doug (whose brother is gay) steps in and easily beats up the opposing player, as Pat films him, and the video goes is played on Pats hockey show, prompting the coach to call in and tell Doug to come try out as an enforcer. -I like how it starts, with the fight;-I cant see Sean William Scott and not see Stiffler-Jays hair is rediculous, with the cuts...and one is crooked-That was a brutal fight-Are those the guys from the Trailer Park Boys in the studio?-Good for Doug getting his 'thing'-Jay has a terrible Boston accent Meanwhile, veteran enforcer and Doug's idol Ross "The Boss" Rhea (Liev Schreiber) is demoted to the minors after serving a 20-game suspension for slashing an opponent in the head from behind. Three years prior, Rhea hit and concussed the highly-skilled prospect Xavier Laflamme (Marc-André Grondin), who has had trouble recovering from the incident due to the fear of being hit, resulting in his being stuck in the minors. After earning the nickname "The Thug," Doug was hired by a farm team in Canada where Laflamme plays, the Halifax Highlanders, to protect Laflamme and be his roommate. The Highlanders experience success with Doug as their enforcer, and he quickly becomes popular among fans and teammates, much to the chagrin of his parents and Laflamme, who loses ice time and the alternate-captaincy to Doug.Doug also becomes romantically involved with Eva (Alison Pill), a hockey fan with a penchant for players. -So he went from not playing hockey, to an amateur team, to a pro team in, like, 2-3 games?-Def weird to sign someones dick. The Eva arch is interesting... Not sure what scared her off.-She walked in talking to her bf, and only pulled back after they kissed? With four games left on their schedule, the Highlanders need two wins to secure a playoff spot. On a road game in Quebec after an opposing player concusses Laflamme with a heavy hit, Doug savagely beats the player unconscious and is suspended for the next game against Rhea and the St. John's Shamrocks. Doug encounters Rhea at a diner, where Rhea dismisses Doug's claim that he is a hockey player, calling him a goon. Though Rhea acknowledges Doug's physical prowess and gives Doug his respect, Rhea warns him that if they ever meet on the ice, he will "lay [him] the fuck out." The Highlanders (with Doug suspended and Laflamme hospitalized) lose to the Shamrocks. Doug reaches out to Laflamme, and promises him he will always have his back on the ice. In their next game, the Highlanders lead 1–0 thanks to strong teamwork between Doug and Laflamme. -Glad his family showed up, they're supportive-Doug in the bedroom was intense-Did Doug let the guy check LeFlamme? and fake going after him afterwards?-Eva calling herself a slut and admitting to sleeping around was an odd turn-Interesting meeting between Doug and Rhea-Stomach light?-I don't understand the turn around with LeFlamme In the final seconds, Doug blocks a slapshot with his face and his ankle is injured in the ensuing scramble. The Highlanders win, but they need a win against Rhea and the Shamrocks in their last game for a playoff spot. After two periods, the Shamrocks are beating the Highlanders 2–0. Rhea and Doug drop the gloves in the third period. Doug is knocked down first, but Rhea calls off the linesmen and allows him to get back up. Doug manages to break Rhea's nose, but breaks his previously injured ankle in the process. Doug manages to stand back up and knocks out Rhea with a vicious left hook. Eva and his teammates help a seriously injured Doug off the ice and Laflamme, inspired by Doug's efforts and Rhea's defeat, scores a natural hat trick, giving the Highlanders a 3–2 lead.As the game enters its final minute, the final scene has Eva comforting Doug in the locker room as he comments, "I think I nailed him." -Damn the puck to the face... but a good stop.-Do Doug and Rhea will meet in the playoffs, and LaFlamme doesn't walk on the logo-The music during the last game was weird... very tense and ominous. Not what you'd expect.-Whats with the weak ankles? Never mentioned before the fight.-That fight was pretty epic and brutal, worth the wait.-Like how Rhea smiled when he was getting up-Good, happy ending. The end Top Five Trivia of the movie: TOP 5 FACTSSeann William Scott gained weight for the role of Doug Glatt, as well as taking intensive skating lessons and fighting on ice.A great majority of the cast is comprised by Canadian actors, including the well-established actors in Hollywood like Jay Baruchel, Kim Coates, Alison Pill and Eugene Levy. The only non-Canadians in major roles are Minnesota-native Seann William Scott and New Yorker Liev Schreiber. Ironically, Baruchel plays an American character (a thickly-accented Massachusetts native) in the film, while Schreiber plays a Canadian character. The scene where Rhea sheds crocodile tears during a press conference was a reference to NHL player Todd Bertuzzi. Bertuzzi, playing for the Vancouver Canucks at the time, punched Colorado Avalanche's Steve Moore in the back of the head during a game causing an injury that would end Moore's career. In a press conference afterwards, an emotional Bertuzzi tearfully apologized for the incident, which cost him a $500,000 salary deduction and a 17 month suspension.Seann William Scott gained weight for the role of Doug Glatt, as well as taking intensive skating lessons and fighting on ice.In an interview with hockey blog Puck Daddy, Liev Schreiber notes that he was inspired by former hockey enforcer Bob Probert. As an homage to the player, he taped his wrists for the film, just as Probert had done when he played. **TRIPLE LINDY AWARD** **REVIEW AND RATING** TOP 5Stephen:1 Breakfast club2 T23 Sandlot4 Back to the Future5 Mail order brides Chris:1. sandlots2. Intro: Baseball has another cheating problem, and it's starting to come out more into the open: pitchers across the sport are reportedly doctoring baseballs with sunscreen, rosin and other substances to increase spin rate, movement and strikeouts. The issue became more public after Cardinals pitcher Giovanny Gallegos was asked to change his glove in a game earlier this week. St. Louis manager Mike Shildt was livid and called out cheating he says is widespread. Twins third baseman Josh Donaldson tweeted that he has "an entire catalog of video of these guys cheating." 5:00: A quick update on Jhoan Duran, the Twins prospect who had another eye-popping night pitching for St. Paul on Thursday. 6:00: Former Wild playoff hero Wes Walz joins Michael Rand for both a look ahead at Friday's Game 7 between the Wild and Vegas and a look back at the Wild's pair of Game 7 road wins back in 2003 when Walz was a player. Come for the great insights. Stay for the fantastic Todd Bertuzzi story. 28:00: The Heat is in trouble, down 3-0 to the Bucks. What does that mean for Jimmy Butler's future?
