“As your business and the revenue you're generating grows, you start changing your mindset from, “I'm hungry I need to get clients” to “How can I build a business in such a way that it can feed into [where you need it to be] to step back from your business and draw income.” - Helen Ngo Tune into this episode to hear financial planner Helen Ngo talk all about saving for retirement as an entrepreneur, a subject that business owners need to eventually prioritize. But let's be real, saving for retirement isn't as realistic in the beginning of growing a business, when priorities are making a living and paying bills. However, a few years in when you're able to start saving for your future, many business owners get stumped on what that even looks like. Helen Ngo, CEO and founder of Capital Benchmark Partners has over a decade of experience in investment management and running her own financial planning firm. She has unlocked the key to financial freedom that most people get wrong. She's an expert in personal finance and helping women create more wealth for themselves. In this episode, Helen walks us through how to prepare for retirement through these 3 main steps: Assess your cash flow and personal budget to project how much you actually need to save for retirement Evaluate your current tax situation and determine what type of retirement plan you need to implement Consider your current cash flow and potential investments to determine what can actually be put aside for retirement As a business owner retirement looks totally different than working in a corporate 9-5 job where you have a 401k set up for you. In entrepreneurship, you're responsible for setting up your retirement! Have you considered this step? If not, I know you'll love this episode and tips from Helen! “There's no such thing as being bad with money. You just have bad habits.”  -- Helen Ngo  When I turned 18 and went off to college, I thought I was going to be a dentist. Despite growing up in a family of female entrepreneurs, and later realizing a career in medicine wasn't for me, I never dreamed of starting my own company.  The “aha” moment didn't come until a few years after college, early in my career in the finance industry. When I asked my boss for a raise, he told me I'd be better off marrying rich.  That was the last time I would ever be shamed for being an ambitious woman.  My fire was lit. So, I fired that 9-5 corporate life for good. Never will I let someone control how much money I make. On this episode of Live and Earn, I take a turn as the guest with my friend and client Ashley Williams, host of the Birds Mean Business podcast. Ashley and I discuss how my identity and upbringing influenced the drive I bring to my business every day. I also share the one thing I wish I had done before becoming an entrepreneur, and some of the top tips I share with my clients.  What we tackle in this episode:  Why I decided to become an entrepreneur — and help other women specifically  How becoming a business owner myself transformed my relationship with my mother and my respect for her own journey as an entrepreneur before me  Why there's no such thing as ‘being bad with money' How people who earn $6,000 and people who earn $60,000 can actually be making the same amount of money  The importance of spending with intention  Where your personal life should be before you start a business The types of people entrepreneurs should surround themselves with Why not everyone should be an entrepreneur  Resources and links mentioned in episode:  Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/MeetHelenNgo Instagram:  https://instagram.com/meethelenngo LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/helenmngo/ Email: Hello@helenngo.com Ready to crush your income goals?  Grab your FREE 1-Page Business Revenue Planner to help you stay on top of your income goals and track your progress throughout the year. We’re excited to have XYPN member Helen Ngo, Founder of the Atlanta-based RIA, Capital Benchmark Partners, on the show today. A lot has changed for Helen since she was last on the show in 2017; she got married, had a baby, and has transitioned her firm to 100% virtual. What hasn’t changed at all is her passion for growing her business. Today she serves over 70 client households, the majority of whom are attorneys. She’s settled into a pricing structure that is niched to the needs of her attorney clients, and finds the conversation around pricing to be (surprisingly) simple. Helen reminisces on what it was like to start her firm, and how her priorities have shifted from being the planner to being a real business owner: managing people issues, learning how to communicate more softly, and graduating clients, all while giving her new baby some love in between calls. Listeners will be particularly interested in Helen’s discussion about the pushback she continues to receive around being in the driver's seat of her own career. As a young woman in this industry, people still ask her who she works for when the real question is not who Helen works for, but who works for Helen. Helen’s commitment to her business and this space remains strong, and she’s a fabulous example of what life looks like when you chase your dreams. Welcome to the Live and Earn Podcast! My name is Helen Ngo and I’m a corporate dropout and former stockbroker turned CEO and Founder of an investment management firm. Over the past decade, I have worked one-on-one with over 300 individuals and families, and through this, I began to notice something. Every woman I worked with faced the same struggles regardless of her income level, whether she makes $50,000 a year or $1MM a year. She faces the challenge of having a sense of not BEING enough, not living up to her fullest earning potential. This is so common yet not enough of us talk about it openly and with honesty. Talking about money -- especially when it comes to how much we want to earn -- should not be taboo. I wholeheartedly believe that when we can get to a place where it’s “normal” to talk about these issues, then we all can succeed. I started this podcast because I want you to see the behind the scenes of peoples’ real money stories. I unveil to you people’s intimate dialogues when it comes to money – in all aspects of it – how they earn and what they earn. See how they spend money and use it to create and live the life they have.  I welcome you to join me every Wednesday as I interview different women from all financial walks of life. Hear their bold stories on how they live, how they earn, and what it means to make it in life.  With this podcast, my goal is for you to gain the confidence you need to define and write your own success story. Welcome back to the Instant Impact podcast with your host, Elyse Archer! Today’s guest is Helen Ngo. She’s Elyse’s personal financial advisor and founder of Capital Benchmarks in Atlanta. She’s on the show today to talk about everything money, and empower listeners to be more comfortable with and around their finances.    Elyse and Helen discuss some steps we can take to get our finances, both personal and professional, in order. The first step, she says, is creating a checklist. After organizing all your accounts and all your statements, keeping track of your assets and liabilities, you can see what you have and don’t have. It removes a lot of the fear and avoidance that comes with finances.    They chat about how helpful and useful bringing in a third party can be when trying to communicate about money with a partner. Helen mentions that it can help open a line of dialogue that is not only respectful but helpful and useful to both parties. She talks about the dynamics of couples and who has the higher income (and how she snaps that off).    Helen breaks down some of the biggest mistakes people make with their finances. The most prominent one she sees is simply not understanding how taxes and accounting works. Often, she says, people don’t think they need to hire someone to help them with their taxes. Inefficiency can lead to not writing off what can be written off, and sometimes writing stuff off that shouldn’t be! Elyse and Helen agree that delegation is the way to go, but it’s important to stay informed.   Helen then dives into some of her favorite tech and tools she uses when helping her clients manage their finances. She reminds us that the tool is only as good as the person entering the data. The tech can be wonderful, but if you’re entering incorrect data, it’s no use. Her favorites, though, include Excel and platforms that aggregate information.    Helen talks shop about fees, commissions, and keeping them all in line. She lets us know that we shouldn’t be afraid of asking for help.    LINKS www.capitalbenchmarkpartners.com Live and Earn podcast Request a free Brand Strategy Call: http://thebrandbuildersgroup.com/callelyse

What does it mean to be self-made? Straight out of the dictionary: “Self made is when someone who acquires her wealth and success on her own and does not inherit or win it. It takes time and persistence to become successful and if you've put in the work then that's declared self made. Someone who comes from some origin - rich or poor, and against all odds, breaks out of her inherited social position, climbs up the social ladder and creates a new identity for herself.” In this episode, Helen Ngo shares why she personally strives to live up to the definition of being self-made and how the money making process is part of the journey.
