How to Support Grieving Loved Ones Are you struggling with grief and seeking support? In this episode of Financially Ever After Widowhood, Hope Reger, a passionate advocate for those experiencing loss, shares her journey and insights on coping with grief with Stacy. She highlights the importance of recognizing the unique challenges that come with grieving and emphasizes the value of genuine connection and support. As the founder of Grief 2 Hope, she provides resources and a safe space for individuals to navigate their grief journey.  Hear them discuss: Understanding Grief: Grieving is a deeply personal experience, and acknowledging it can be the first step toward healing. Authentic Support: When helping someone who is grieving, honesty matters—simply saying, "I don't know what to say, but I'm here for you," can be incredibly powerful. Casserole Therapy vs. Specific Help: While well-meaning friends may offer food, true support comes from specific offers to help, like picking up kids or walking the dog, rather than leaving the burden on the grieving person to ask for help. The Importance of Ongoing Support: Grief doesn't end after the funeral. Continuing to reach out during significant milestones—like anniversaries or the first day of school—can mean the world to someone navigating loss. Grief to Hope Program: Open to anyone grieving, this seven-week virtual program provides a supportive community. It covers various topics related to grief and allows participants to share their experiences in a safe space. Inclusivity of Loss: The program welcomes those grieving any loss, whether it be a partner, child, or friend, emphasizing that all grief is valid. Free Resources: The Grief to Hope program is entirely free, emphasizing the mission to support anyone in need without financial barriers. Meet Hope Reger! Her story began in 2016 after the loss of her son Justin to murder. She was in the midst of a parent's worst nightmare and could not find a community that understood her pain. She was looking for those who understood the deep grief she felt a need to ensure she was grieving "right" in her son's honor. During the course of her search, she realized that it was within me to create a safe space for those that were going through grief to know they are not alone and there are many of us out here who are ready to help, provide hope, in a safe space. Then Covid hit, and for many that meant an additional layer for grief. As a country, we were counting numbers of deaths and many were not able to have services, say goodbye and for many were in isolation. Through all of that...Grief 2 Hope was born. Hope put pen to paper and developed a virtual grief peer support program for anyone grieving from the comfort of their home to ensure that no one felt isolated or alone in their grief. Through Grief 2 Hope, she has created a way for people to experience grief together in a space where we can remove that grief mask with no judgement, to feel at home with our emotions, and to know that grief is completely unique to each individual. It provides a comfort that cannot be duplicated.   Connect with hope at https://www.grief2hopesupport.com/

In this episode, we have not one, but two fantastic guests to share their story, Hope Reger and Candace Sims. Both of whom are mothers to sons who were murdered. In our conversation we hear how they have found both determination and purpose in and from their experiences. These amazing women now support others in their grief and living life more fully. Bios Hope Reger Hope Reger lives in Xenia, Ohio with her husband Mike, she has two sons Brian, 33 and Justin, forever 19 and three amazing granddaughters, Haylynn, Addi, and Brilie. Hope's "day job" is a talent coordinator with a major financial institution for the past 26 years. Hope believes her purpose in life was given to her after the traumatic loss of her son to murder. That purpose is to provide positivity, inspiration, and hope to others through her Grief 2 Hope program she created in honor of her son. Grief 2 Hope is a virtual peer grief support group that allows grievers a safe space to be their authentic self with support of others who understand and know exactly what they are going through. One of Hope's quotes she likes to end each session with is " Grief changes your entire world, it can also inspire you to change the world". Hope can be found at www.grief2hopesupport.com You can also check out Hope's memoir, Grief 2 Hope: A mother's memoir of devastation to determination on Amazon Kindle at https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B7K12G4V. Candace Sims Candace Sims is more than just a bereaved mother. She parented a son for 22 years as a single mother. Marcus Reid was killed April 8, 2007. Since that day life has never been the same. The first year of coping with grief and loss was an eye-opening, self-reflecting experience. She felt pitiful for herself and thought she would always be pitied. But due to the spiritual foundation she was building up to that point, the faith inside of her went to work. She is now (at 15 years of grieving my son's death) a Certified End of life Coach, Court Appointed Advocate in the State of Georgia, Community Advocate, Small Business Bereavement Coordinator, wife and Grandmother! Death has taught her how to live better purposefully! Her life's work is to help others talk more freely, and candidly about death without falling apart.  Candace can be found at www.concepts-power.com

Hope Reger was aptly named. She was once a struggling teenage mom in Ohio but pushed ahead and succeeded in raising her son despite the odds. Hope advanced in her career and later married Mike. Together they raised their two sons with love and devotion. Life looked promising. They became grandparents. Then Hope received a knock on her door one morning as she was getting ready for work. Two uniformed officers handed her a note simply saying "Call this number. It's about your son, Justin" (her youngest child, then age 19) living with friends. She called and the voice on the other end picked up and said "Green County Morgue."

Feeling powerless is not something Hope Reger generally struggled with until her son was shot and killed at the age of 19. Not only was she suffering with the sudden and unfair loss of her son, she also felt cheated out of justice when his assailant claimed self-defense and the case never even went to trial. Hope talks about how allowing herself to grieve gave her a clarity on her purpose and how she is using her experience to help others today. In this episode, we learn the story of Hope Reger. Hope lost her teenage son Justin when he was shot in the chest by a roommate. The grand jury did not indict the roommate based upon a defense of self-defense. This decision left Hope devastated with no justice for her son. Hope eventually accepted what happened and founded Grief2Hope, a virtual peer support group for people who have suffered the loss of loved ones. Hope's story is one of turning loss into something positive. Check out Hope's Grief2Hope Recovery Method Key Takeaways - You need to move on from bad things in your life and turn negatives into positives - Grief can't be “fixed.” You cope with grief and learn to live with it. - When grieving, accept help. - When dealing with overwhelming grief, find the purpose (the inspiration), to keep you going. - To overcome adversity, challenge yourself. Set small goals and celebrate reaching your goals. Always be thinking forward. ///// Buy Rod's Book "Get Back Up" >>> Buy Here Learn more about & contact Rod Cate:Rod Cate Website Twitter Facebook LinkedIn   More About Rod Cate and Get Back Up: On August 14, 1981, Rod broke his neck while making a tackle that left him paralyzed from the neck down. Show Notes This week Sandi D. talks with Hope Reger, Founder and Facilitator of Grief 2 Hope, a virtual peer grief support group. After the tragic loss of her son, Justin, who will be ‘forever 19,' Hope made the decision to honor his memory by helping others who have lost loved ones. Hope radiates kindness, positivity, and love by pouring her heart into creating a supportive space for people in all stages of grief.  The group meets on Zoom for 7 weeks and many participants have returned to subsequent cohorts. We talked about how grief has no time limit and how each person's experience with grief is unique. The support sessions are centered around sharing each others' stories and respective journeys through the grieving process. She guides the group through GRIEF by focusing on these concepts:G = gift of timeR = receive helpI = inspiring yourselfE = managing expectationsF = feel everythingThe timing of this episode seems like divine timing or serendipity. I am still a work in progress with respect to grieving the loss of my older brother who passed away due to an accident when he was 7. What resonated most about this episode was when Hope describes how grief is like a heart beat but with time, the intervals between the beats generally get longer as you move through your grief. You'll be inspired to hear how Hope transforms dark times into light in order to help others.Hope Reger WebFacebookInstagramAll Things Relax StudiosInstagram Facebook WebsiteFind Your Inner Zen Digital Bundle (includes FIRE audio affirmations)7 Steps to Rock Your Podcast with Confidence (free Quick Guide)All Things RelaxBlogInstagram Facebook Production CreditsProduced By: G at All Things Relax StudiosVoice Overs & Promotional Spots: Sandi D & GRecorded On: SquadCastMastered & Released: BuzzSproutMusic Licensed: Soundstripe: Mikey Geiger, Caleb Etheridge (ASCAP); Soul Plus Mind (BMI)All Things Relax Studios

Hope Reger joins Robbie & Keri as they discuss the 10 seconds that changed her world. A little over four years ago, I received a knock on my door, with two policemen standing out front at 6:30am. I answered it with a feeling of "What has that boy done now?" They gave me a piece of paper after I confirmed I was Justin's mom and said to call the person on the note asap, they have been trying to reach me. I shut the door, dialed the number, the person on the other end said, Greene County Coroner. My entire world changed in that 10 seconds and would never be the same again. I lost my son at the age of 19 to murder. We use the word GRIEF as an acronym that helps us cope with the loss of our loved ones. G is for the gift of time. R is to receive help. I is for inspiring yourself. E is for managing expectations. F is for feeling everything, something you just have to do.  Our final meeting in the program is  to prepare you for the next steps.
