When Luke Anear worked as a private investigator investigating workplace mishaps and chasing workers' compo cheats, he realised he wanted to turn that negative into a positive. So he set about helping companies vastly improve their safety procedures in the workplace, to try and prevent workers having accidents in the first place. His little startup took shape in the proverbial garage of his suburban Townsville home, and he began slowly, selling safety checklists delivered on Word documents. But then Luke Anear transformed his little business baby into a multi-million dollar global technology empire, when he and a uni dropout mate created an app, called iAuditor -- essentially a mobile safety checklist app to suit each individual workplace. That completely changed Luke Anear's life, and set SafetyCulture on course to become a $2 billion Aussie success story. How that has mushroomed to now service almost 28,000 customers around the world, and what Luke Anear has learned along the way from the smartest venture capital investors in the room, including mentors and supporters like Atlassian's Scott Farquhar is a story and a half. Plus what Luke learned and how he navigated the panic-struck arrival of the COVID pandemic offers lessons for most entrepreneurs. Hope you enjoy Luke Anear! "If you can come up with bigger questions you'll come up with bigger answers." Self-belief is one of the few things that'll get you through the shit…during those uncomfortable moments that make you wonder, ”why the hell am I here?” After witnessing the tragedy of workplace incidents as a private investigator, Luke created SafetyCulture, a darling of Australia's growing tech sector. Luke and Mark discuss the humble beginnings of working in a Mobil service station, investment from his dentist, and why your imagination could be killing your business. Join the Facebook Group. Luke Anear used to work as a private investigator in the workplace compensation industry, and his experiences inspired him to start SafetyCulture, one of the fastest growing tech companies in Australia which is best known for its workplace, health and safety apps: iAuditor and Spotlight. Like a lot of entrepreneurs, Luke started his company in his garage and was based in Townsville. SafetyCulture is now one of the fastest growing companies in Australia, and has been tapped on the shoulders to be the 'next Atlassian' or great Australian success story in the startup world. In 2018, Luke raised the largest amount of capital for a startup or tech company in Australia - in just 90 minutes. Now, SafetyCulture is worth $440 million and employs over 200 people in 4 countries. Luke offers some fantastic words of wisdom in this interview for any business owner out there looking to scale their business. We're sure you'll love this episode of The Make It Happen Show as much as we do.
When you survive a major disaster, do you stop taking risks?
It’s the late eighties and the oil industry is booming. Life’s good. But when you’ve become comfortable dealing with risk, it makes for predictable accidents and it’s easy to forget that if things go wrong, they can go really wrong.
It was a gas leak that started it, like a banshee wail on the production deck. The 18-month long government inquiry set about investigating why Piper was destroyed, but with so many witnesses dead, questions remain over exactly what happened.
When the cameras are gone you can’t see the ripple effect that carries on through the decades after a major accident. Why do some people cope better than others, and should we assess risk not just in terms of the likelihood of accidents but the risk of lasting trauma?
It’s been a long time since Piper exploded: experts are nervous that the industry has forgotten and is on the precipice of another disaster. So, can we ever be sure that the right warnings are getting through and should we all be trying to jumpstart our own chronicunease in order to keep us alive?
I'm pretty excited at the moment. I'm happy to announce that the newest member of our family has arrived, his name is Jude Thomas, and despite the fact that he has shown his stubbornness in both labour and afterwards, my wife and I, and his 5 siblings, are glad to have him in our lives. I'm also excited about another new beginning, something of a birth I suppose as well. Safety on Tap Connected, the worlds first growth accelerator designed for health and safety professionals, launched on the 29th of May 2017. I can't tell you how pumped I am to have our founding member group starting to accelerate their growth. I've had plenty of enquiries about membership after the deadline though, since we were only open for one week. As our founders group settles down into the rhythm of ongoing growth and development through our coaching, community, content and contemplation, we may open up again for more new members in the future. So if you think Safety on Tap Connected is right to help you grow, you need to be on the waiting list at safetyontap.com, and I'll let you know when we open the doors again. If you aren't sure what this is all about still, I have something else for you. Since we are doing something quite different from conventional professional development, it's understandable that you might not be sure what you are actually going to get. One of the more common bits of feedback I got was about coaching - so many health and safety people haven't had much if any exposure to what coaching is, which arguably is the best value part of the membership. So if you are in the not sure camp, I have something special for you. So you can get totally informed, I'll let you have a sneak peek at our member onboarding videos, which explains everything in detail. If you want to check those out, send me an email andrew@safetyontap.com My guest today is Luke Anear, founder of Safety Culture, the creators of the iAuditor app, the most used audit and inspection app in the world. Luke has a great product and leads one of the fastest growing tech companies in Australia to make his mission happen - to improve health and safety by helping frontline workers. He has some great insights about user-centred design, staying true to your mission, and what the future looks like to him. Here's Luke: I mentioned a few links I'd share from that discussion with Luke: Health Monitor by Atlassian (for tracking all sorts of projects and team work) Spotlight Incident Reporting and Investigation app (for iOS) User Experience Design Cheat Sheet the Safety Culture way [activecampaign form=5]
So there are a few things that create ongoing discomfort for me as a professional, one of which is the lack of evidence in health and safety practice, and our tendency for so much of our practice to not be evidence based even when it exists. I am guilty too. I met Michelle Oberg last year when I was speaking at the Australian National Safety Convention, and she had me intrigued with her PhD research question, which I summarised in my notes as 'is less "safety" (in inverted commas) actually more safety?'. So the results have been streaming in, and Michelle's PhD is almost completed. So Michelle and I caught up to find out what she learned. Before you go..... Next week I'm lucky enough to be speaking to the wonderful staff at Safety Culture, the inventors of the iAuditor app many of us would be familiar with. They wanted my input to help their people, largely the technical boffins, to connect with their mission, the final output of their product - actual health and safety outcomes. I'm honored to be asked to help, and impressed with their commitment to keeping their mission front of mind. Lucky for you, they will be live-streaming my presentation and the following Q&A session on Facebook, that's 5-6pm Thursday 6th April (that's Sydney time), so if you want to watch that, Like Safety on Tap on Facebook and I'll post more details there.
