Because planning is usually external. It's timelines, it's spreadsheets, it's steps, it's milestones, all of those things. But preparing is internal. It's your mind state, it's your emotional readiness to adapt.”“ Innovation is a permission problem, not an idea problem. People don't need more creativity. They need more psychological safety to use it.” ”If you wanna create an environment for innovation, I would recommend using rituals and not rules. Rituals are sticky and they're human… Leaders have specific values in an organization that they wanna activate, bring to life. I think rituals are the best way to actually do that.” Practice Makes Profit: Making collaboration seamless by assessing alignment.League of Strategic Minds [listener question]:    What strategy myths hold organizations back from being more successful?Winsights: Ideas for Advantage:     Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, said, “I bet 70 percent of the innovation we do focuses on slightly improving a process. This week on Leadership is Feminine, Kris Plachy offers a candid exploration of the employee-employer dynamic—and the personal responsibility that comes with being part of any team. With her trademark clarity and insight, Kris challenges listeners to rethink what it truly means to be employed: It's not just about time—it's about delivering results. Through thoughtful reflection and real-world examples, Kris unpacks why understanding basic business principles is essential for anyone who wants to thrive at work. She reminds us that employment is a two-way agreement, one that requires alignment, accountability, and honest communication. “Employers pay employees for results, not time,” she explains, inviting us to reconsider how we show up in our roles and what we expect in return. Kris also takes a closer look at the emotional experience of work—highlighting the toll of staying in roles that no longer serve us. Rather than settling for misalignment, she encourages listeners to explore new paths with courage and clarity. As she reminds us, “There is always a next step forward if you choose to make it.” Whether you're an employee looking to better understand your role, or a leader wanting to foster more intentional, empowered teams, this episode is a wake-up call. Tune in to discover how taking ownership of your role in the workplace can lead to more satisfaction, stronger results, and a renewed sense of purpose. Play Episode Listen Later Apr 14, 2025 26:46

What does it take to truly transform conversations and empower clients as a coach? In this episode we unpack the essential coaching skills that every great coach should cultivate. These aren't the conventional techniques you'll find in a competency framework; they're the often-overlooked yet powerful capabilities that create truly impactful and transformative coaching experiences. Join us as we share insights and personal reflections from our own coaching journeys, exploring both the obvious and under-the-radar skills that can elevate your coaching practice. As we kick off the conversation, we reflect on what makes the art of coaching so unique. One of the first skills we explore is attunement and loving presence—the ability to tune into a client's energy, emotions, and worldview. This skill allows coaches to create a safe, intimate space where clients can open up, share their vulnerabilities, and feel fully seen. We recount how, over time, we've learned to attune to the “energy field” of our clients, connecting with their inner worlds in deeply meaningful ways. Next, we delve into pattern spotting, a skill that extends beyond just noticing what clients say in the moment. It's about drawing connections across multiple conversations and identifying themes that clients themselves may not yet recognise. We share how this skill enhances self-awareness and helps clients unlock breakthroughs. Time management comes into focus as we discuss its role in maintaining session boundaries and ensuring clients derive maximum value. It's a practical yet essential skill—one that's vital for closing sessions effectively while allowing both coach and client to leave the coaching “bubble” ready to engage with the wider world. From there, we explore cultural awareness and the importance of understanding the systemic challenges and diverse lived experiences our clients may face. We reflect on our own growth and commitment to educating ourselves, creating inclusive spaces, and embracing the complexities of coaching within a multicultural landscape. We also dive into creativity and agility, sharing how “dancing in the moment” helps us respond to clients' needs without rigidly adhering to structures or models. This is complemented by our exploration of keeping ego in check, reminding ourselves as coaches to stay client-centred and avoid the temptation to impose our own agendas. Towards the end of the episode, we discuss two transformative skills: lifelong learning and courage. Sales Mastery & The Infinite Game with David Weiss Episode Summary:  David Weiss explores the mindset, habits, and strategies that set top sales professionals apart. From intentional career development to enterprise sales best practices, David shares invaluable insights for sales leaders and professionals looking to elevate their game. Recorded: August 2020 Key Takeaways: The Path to Sales Success: David's journey into sales highlighted the importance of intentionality and learning from early failures. His experience underscored the necessity of structured training and development in sales. Sales as a Professional Sport: Treating a sales career like that of a professional athlete, dedicating time to practice, continuous learning, and skill refinement, is crucial for sustained success. Breaking Sales Stereotypes: Sales is often misunderstood as an “expensive dark art.” Leaders must see beyond outdated perceptions and recognize the value of structured, professional selling. The Power of Mentorship: Learning from great leaders, and understanding the lessons from ineffective ones, can shape a successful sales career. David shares impactful mentorship experiences that influenced his growth. Business Acumen for Sales Success: Sales leaders must ensure their teams understand finance, operations, marketing, and legal aspects to be effective beyond just the sales process. Customer-Centric Selling: Sales isn't the start or end of the customer journey, it's a part of a broader experience. Leaders should foster a customer-first mindset across the organization. Effective Sales Onboarding: The best onboarding programs prioritize organizational understanding, relationship-building, and the sales process before diving into product knowledge. Enterprise Sales Mastery: Success in enterprise sales requires experience in internal negotiations, multi-threading, stakeholder management, and long sales cycles. Recruiting Top Enterprise Sales Talent: Hiring should focus on candidates with extensive enterprise experience or deep domain expertise. Key attributes include curiosity, relationship-building, and a willingness to challenge the status quo. The Habits of High-Performing Salespeople: Self-motivation, thorough research, problem-solving, planning, and organization are critical to sales excellence. The Daily Discipline of Prospecting: Even with large deals in progress, maintaining account coverage and prospecting daily prevents commoditization. Predicting Sales Success Early: The first 30-60 days of a new hire often indicate future success. Engagement, learning, and pipeline-building should be closely monitored. Always Be Recruiting: Sales leaders should proactively build a bench of candidates to avoid reactive hiring, as vacant sales roles are costly. Pre-Onboarding for Faster Ramp-Up: Sharing territory lists and facilitating early relationship-building can accelerate a new hire's productivity. Internal Alignment is Crucial: Enterprise sales success depends on preparation and alignment among all internal stakeholders. Sales should be treated like a well-rehearsed concert. Leveraging Partners for Success: Partners play a vital role in enterprise sales. Engaging them early and aligning with their goals enhances collaboration. The Infinite Game in Sales: A long-term mindset focused on relationships, brand-building, and collaboration leads to sustained success, rather than short-term wins. From Transactions to Relationships: The best salespeople prioritize lifetime customer value over one-off deals, genuinely seeking to help their clients. Managing the Challenges of a New Role: New sales hires should pace themselves, focus on incremental growth, and redefine what success looks like in the early days. The Role of Sales Managers: Managers must understand individual team members' needs and provide support in today's changing sales landscape. Structured 120-Day Onboarding: A well-planned onboarding roadmap should sequence learning appropriately, build foundational knowledge, and provide clear performance metrics. First Impressions Matter: New hires evaluate their organization and leaders early on. Providing strong support, feedback, and guidance is essential to retaining top talent. Effective Sales Leadership: Great sales managers hire strong talent, support their teams, and remove obstacles rather than micromanage or rescue struggling reps. Coaching Through Experience: Sales leaders should let reps lead customer meetings and learn through experience rather than taking over. Rethinking Traditional Marketing: Instead of ineffective traditional approaches, businesses should focus on a strong website aligned with customer pain points and leverage user-generated content. Why Consultative Sellers Will Survive AI (Ask Jeb)

Marcin from Warsaw, Poland, asks: What are the top sales trends shaping the future of sales? Our conversation ranged from the impact of AI to the growing importance of a consultative selling mindset in modern selling. Below, you'll discover practical insights you can leverage to sharpen your competitive edge—regardless of what industry or region you sell into—and take advantage of these emerging trends. AI Will Power Sales Efficiency and Intelligence When we think about the future of sales, AI inevitably dominates the conversation. Whether you're a software rep, selling capital equipment, or providing professional services, artificial intelligence is quickly transforming the salescape. Elevated EfficiencyAI will eliminate many repetitive tasks, surface the best leads, track deal progress, and remind you when a prospect stalls. At a basic level, AI can be your 24/7 virtual assistant that never forgets an appointment or misses a follow-up. Smarter Data ManagementAI will digest massive data sets, then deliver concise insights that help you identify buying signals, forecast deal closures, and spot hidden risk factors in your pipeline. Relationships Still MatterAs advanced as AI might be, it can't replace human conversations—especially in complex or consultative sales. Ultimately, people buy from people they trust. Keep that fact front and center as you adopt AI-driven tools. They're there to free you up for higher-value activities, not to take over your role. The Return to Humanity: Relationships Make the Difference In an age where we can automate just about anything with tech, your core differentiator will be your ability to build trust and engage deeply with clients. Human Connection Is a Competitive AdvantageIf everything can be automated or self-served, how do you stand out? By demonstrating genuine empathy, patience, and an interest in solving unique business problems. Buyers are craving human interaction that goes beyond transactional sales. Adapt to Cultural NuancesYour ability to adapt and flex to the nuance of both cultural differences between countries, regions, industries, and companies gives you a competitive edge when building trust.  In some markets, diving straight into business is a sign of respect and efficiency; in others, building rapport is crucial before any serious conversation can start. Being agile enough to flex your communication style to fit local norms is a hallmark of top-performing sales consultants. Embrace a Consultative Selling Mindset In the age of AI there is a massive shift toward consultative selling. If you're selling complex products, services, or solutions, you can't just pitch features and benefits anymore. To survive and thrive you must become a business advisor, diagnosing problems and developing creative and innovative solutions. Key Skills to Develop Deep Discovery Great consultants don't leap in with a pre-packaged pitch; they ask probing questions, explore unarticulated pain points, and let clients talk. This patient approach sets you up to deliver precisely what the customer needs. Business Acumen and Technical KnowledgeIn consultative sales, you often speak with senior executives who expect you to know how business works—everything from supply chain issues to profitability metrics. If you show up unprepared, someone else with deeper business insight will get the sale. Creative, Innovative SolutionsOnce you've gathered the facts, your job is to co-create a roadmap. That means pulling from your experience, internal product knowledge, and general business know-how to design a solution that resonates across multiple stakeholders. This requires both IQ (to connect the dots) and EQ (to communicate the vision persuasively). Stay Curious and Keep Learning A big part of stepping into a consultative role is adopting a lifelong learning mentality. Too many sales professionals stop reading or stop trying ne...

What military strategies and tactics can business leaders leverage to position their companies for success? In this episode, Rich sits down with four-star General Robert Brown, President and CEO of the Association of the United States Army. General Brown is an experienced commander who has led at every level, from platoon through Army Service Component Command, leading a group of over 100,000 soldiers. In this conversation, he discusses military strategy and best practices for navigating the modern Fog of War, sharing his insights on red teaming, after action reviews, and leadership principles. ---------Key Quotes: “Too much information has become the fog of war. It used to be not enough. Now it's too much… Now you've got to look through haystacks of information, thousands of haystacks of information, to try to find that golden needle in the haystack that will help you make a decision.” “ I've seen somebody say to me: ‘Here's my strategy, it's 15 pages.' And it's like, hey, it's gonna fail, You might as well stop. Start again. Can't be 15. Nobody's gonna read it.”“ The key is creating a learning environment where people want to learn and that after action review helps you learn and overcome those issues that may be buried if you didn't pull them out. It's like pulling a band aid off. You can't be thin skinned. Sometimes it's tough.”Practice Makes Profit: Increasing team velocity through a decision inventory. League of Strategic Minds [listener question]:   What's the best way to tell if someone is strategic? Winsights: Ideas for Advantage:    Sun Tzu, the Chinese general and philosopher, wrote, “Do not repeat the tactics which have gained you one victory, but let your methods be regulated by the infinite variety of circumstances.” Are you and your team repeating the same tactics year after year and expecting some type of miraculous change?  Carve out time to think strategically about the changes in your market and with your customers. You have to execute the strategy and you shouldn't be thinking in dollars or anything like that. You should be thinking in numbers and players and the relationships between our strategies. I think a lot of mistakes I've seen at big final tables come from players that get a little overwhelmed by the moment or the thinking about the money. That stuff you really shouldn't be thinking about until after the tournament.”“ The biggest thing for me is objective self evaluation, where I'm looking at how I played, I'm looking at the decisions from a distance and saying, was this hand played well? Was this the right play against this player in that situation? And really remaining confident that even though you're losing, and in poker tournaments, you actually lose 80 percent of the time.”“ Know who you're playing against….because  everybody has different strategies. You have loose players, tight players. You have ones that don't want to play big pots. You have ones that maybe don't play as many hands preflop….So really, try to understand your opponent. Alan has earned multiple patents and overseen the expansion of Pega from start-up to a $1.3+ billion, global, public company with about 6,000 employees. In this episode, he discusses the lessons he has taken from chess into business, and how he thinks companies should be strategically thinking about AI. ---------Key Quotes:“The chess master will look and identify a set of candidates. They don't just stare at the position and magically figure out what to do. They say, ‘hey, here are three, four, five things that appear to be credible alternatives' and then very methodically dig through them to figure out which might be the best one or what the holes are.”“In the four decades of Pega's existence, we've done five complete technology shifts….And every single one of those encompass the risk of doing something that was materially different. And there's always risk when you're doing something the first time, or you're doing something that is hard. Ultimately I think evaluating those risks is key, but you also need to think about the risk of not making a change.”“If you think of AI as an accelerant, as a way to, for example, tell you something about your business that you should make better and then you have the chance with your team to weigh in and don't necessarily do what the AI is telling you, but use the AI as a stimulus. Boy, you can use the AI as it exists now, and it can profoundly change the way a business works.”Practice Makes Profit: Increasing productivity and efficiency by scoring and categorizing your interactions. League of Strategic Minds [listener question]:  What are the keys to running a good strategy offsite meeting? Winsights: Ideas for Advantage:  Jack Welch, former CEO of GE, said, “When the rate of change inside a company is slower than the rate of change outside, the end is in sight. How can you use the principles of neurosurgery to maximize your leadership performance? In this episode, Rich sits down with Dr. Theodore Schwartz, a pioneering neurosurgeon at Weill Cornell Medicine, known for developing minimally invasive techniques for brain tumor and epilepsy surgery.Dr. Schwartz explores the mental and physical preparation required for surgery, navigating the challenge of making hundreds of cascading decisions and cultivating the personal resilience needed to persevere in such a high stakes environment. ---------Key Quotes:“I often say to the residents when we're operating, ‘Don't forget to listen to the tumor.' And they're like, ‘What do you mean?' I'm like, ‘You have to listen to the tumor. The tumor is telling you where it's going to hold on and where it's going to let you go. And you can't always impose your will on the tumor, but you have to listen to it and see what it's telling you, and react to that to change your plan.' So you have to be receptive to the information coming in in order to create the most productive plan to move forward.”“Although we erect a certain amount of emotional armor to deal when things go wrong, you then have to also be very, very sensitive and be able to let down that armor and be a human being.”“And the question is, how do you put yourself in that mental space and in that physical space to function at a hundred percent, literally three days a week, I'm operating, you know, 48 weeks a year. Going on 25 years, right? I mean, it's just, it's relentless. It's every day. Why Business-Savvy Communicators Can Lead in the Age of AI - with David Albritton

What do corporate communications leaders know about the businesses they serve? Chances are they know quite a lot. They know the stories, the narratives, and the CEO's various points of view; they know the strategies, the values, and the culture; they know the audiences and stakeholders and (should) how to calm them in times of crisis; sometimes they know where all the bodies are buried and which closets hold the most skeletons. Their job is, fundamentally, to know things. But do they understand The Business? Do they understand balance sheets? Do they speak the language of financial performance? Do they grasp everything in the Annual Report? Some do, but many still don't. How can they become the trusted advisors their companies and clients need, especially in these challenging and changing times? In this episode of The Trending Communicator, host Dan Nestle reconnects with David Albritton, the former Naval Intelligence officer who built a stunning career in Communications before becoming an executive coach and strategic advisor. Currently Managing Director at CRA, David may be the only person to have made the leap from PR flack to global CEO (at least according to Dan), giving him a unique perspective on the need for communicators to develop business acumen and leadership skills to build thriving careers. Even in the age of AI. As the world grapples with the implications of AI, misinformation, and shifting workplace dynamics, David shares his perspective on what it means to be a communicator today. He emphasizes the importance of building authentic relationships, understanding the business beyond the communications function, and the critical role of communicators as strategic advisors. David also discusses his journey to becoming a board member at Embecta and the unique skills communicators can bring to the table in these roles. He highlights the necessity for communicators to be business partners first, leveraging their unique position to influence and drive organizational success. He and Dan spend some time on the impact of AI on personal and professional development, revealing insights into how communicators can use these tools to enhance their understanding of business operations and improve their strategic influence.  Whether you're a seasoned communications professional or just starting your career, this episode offers valuable lessons on leadership, the evolving role of communications, and the skills needed to thrive in today's fast-paced environment. Don't miss this opportunity to learn from one of the leading voices in strategic communications.   Listen in and hear about... The evolving role of communications professionals in the face of AI, misinformation, and declining institutional trust. Insights into the unique challenges and opportunities for communicators seeking board positions. The importance of building authentic relationships in hybrid and remote work environments. Strategies for communicators to become trusted business partners and influence organizational success. How generative AI can enhance personal career growth and understanding of business operations. The enduring qualities of effective leadership amidst technological and societal changes.   Notable Quotes "COVID changed the world in terms of what we accept in terms of how we engage with people. It all really comes down to relationships—who knows you, who do you know, do they trust you, do they have confidence in your abilities?" - David Albritton [10:34] "If we only think about our value proposition through the lens of communications, we are failing the organization and ourselves. We need to become business partners who by the way, do communications." - David Albritton [16:26] "If you aspire for greatness going forward, then how are you sharing your voice in that room when you have the opportunity? That's a critical skill for communicators that we don't develop." - David Albritton [21:05] "I've been that person who comes into the room and is reluctant to offer an opinion or advice because they're talking about finance now, and I don't want to get over my skis." - Dan Nestle [22:01] "The preparation you put in before you get to the meeting is going to make all the difference in the world because now you're educated, now you're confident, now you can raise your hand and ask a smart question." - David Albritton [28:29] "Managing what people are saying about you when you're not in the room is hugely important for career growth." - David Albritton [41:54] "I believe that corporate structure itself is obsolete and doesn't know it yet." - Dan Nestle [47:12]   Resources and Links Dan Nestle The Trending Communicator | Website Daniel Nestle | LinkedIn Dan Nestle | Twitter/X David Albritton David Albritton | LinkedIn CRA | Admired Leadership ALEX, the Virtual Leadership Coach   Timestamped key moments from this episode (as generated by Fireflies.ai)
