In this episode of "Ayana Explains It All," Ayana Fakhir delves into the reasons behind the Democratic Party's loss in the 2024 election and explores potential strategies for rebuilding. Reflecting on the party's historical trajectory from the era of Franklin Roosevelt to the present, Ayana discusses the long-standing connection the Democratic Party had with working-class struggles and civil rights, and how it has drifted from this core identity.Works cited:"Tyranny of the Minority: Why American Democracy Reached the Breaking Point" by Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt (2023)."Stamped from The Beginning" by Ibrahim X. Kendi (2017).
It seems like a lifetime ago that Ta'Nehisi Coates was making his case for reparations, Ibrahim X. Kendi was teaching America how to be anti racist and a group of women from the West Coast launched a hashtag that for a time started a movement in Black Lives Matter. This was the impetus of the racial reckoning that Kendi and others called a 3rd Reconstruction for Black Americans. In 2014, Coates' essay in The Atlantic reignited a more serious conversation around reparations for African Americans, sparking a broader dialogue on the idea of systemic racism, historical injustices of redlining in housing and the need for meaningful change. That change would have to be redressed financially, because in capitalism, we can only solve the crisis of capitalism with more capitalism. This moment is preceded with the early rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, which emerged in response to the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the killing of Trayvon Martin. The movement brought issues of police brutality and racial inequality and in some cases mass incarceration to the forefront of public consciousness, leading to widespread protests and calls for justice. Over the next several years, the Black political vision became increasingly centered on identity politics, emphasizing the importance of representation and recognition in addressing racial disparities. This focus, however, gradually evolved, as it always does, into a form of patronage politics, where symbolic victories often took precedence over substantive policy changes. Corporate and philanthropic foundations played a significant role in shaping the agenda, funding initiatives that prioritized diversity and inclusion over federally backed plans to tackle deeper systemic issues. By the time of the George Floyd uprisings in 2020, it seemed as though a transformative moment had arrived. The protests were unprecedented in their scale and intensity, with millions demanding an end to police violence and systemic racism. Yet, despite the outpouring of activism and foundation money and the apparent momentum for change, the underlying structures of power remained largely unchallenged. Fast forward to today, and we are witnessing a troubling return to "tough on crime" policies reminiscent of the 1990s. Fear of crime and visible homelessness have fueled public anxiety, prompting political leaders in major metropolitan cities like San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles to revert to strategies that prioritize law and order over social justice. This shift highlights the limitations of a decade-long racial reckoning that, while significant, ultimately fell short of achieving the transformative change many had hoped for. As we examine this period, we must ask ourselves: What were the successes and failures of this era of racial reckoning? How did identity politics shape the movement, and what role did foundations play in guiding its direction? Most importantly, how can we learn from this history to build a more effective and lasting movement for racial justice in the future? Join us as we delve into these questions and more, exploring the complex legacy of the past decade's racial reckoning and its implications for the ongoing struggle for equality and justice in America. Roughly a fifth of the U.S. Senate is comprised of Democrats and Independents up for reelection this fall. Each of them may soon cast a vote that will illuminate their attitudes towards some of the most divisive issues of our time. President Biden wants a radical leftist Oregon judge named Mustafa Taher Kasubhai to have a lifetime appointment to the U.S. District Court there. Never mind that he: embraces cultural Marxist identity politics; exemplifies his state's soft-on-crime attitude towards the riots precipitated by Black Lives Matter in 2020; admires one its inspirations, a so-called “anti-racist” racist named Ibrahim X. Kendi; and describes the United States as “Islamophobic” and Muslim assimilation as “erasure.” Any senator who believes a man with such toxic views should wield the power of a federal judge must henceforth be accountable for sharing them. Do yours? This is Frank Gaffney.

In today's third hour, Dom leads off by discussing the issue of race, playing back a clip of Ibrahim X. Kendi who appeared on today's Morning Joe to respond to Republican candidate Tim Scott's appearance on the View. Kendi, along with Reverend Al Sharpton, explain why Tim Scott doesn't understand racism, which Dom finds fascinatingly inappropriate to say about a person of color. Then, Dom explains why he believes Mike Pence is already off-base in his announcement, playing back a clip from a pro-Pence commercial alleging that Trump has abandoned conservative principles, which Dom suggests may be a preview of Pence's stance on abortion and other social issues. After embarking on a two-decade terrorist campaign of mail bombs, Ted Kaczynski forced the Washington Post to publish “Industrial Society And Its Future”, or, the Unabomber Manifesto, in 1995. This was an infamous tract on climate change as well as on the philosophical and pragmatic ramifications of accelerating technology. In ArtiFact #34, Alex Sheremet is joined by radical climate activist Arnold Schroder of the Fight Like An Animal podcast to discuss “The Industrial Society And Its Future”. They tackle Ted Kaczynski's claims about Leftism and political psychology, his time frame for ecological collapse, his use and misuse of terms such as “freedom”, and more. In assessing the Unabomber manifesto, they conclude that while Ted Kaczynski is often labeled insane or a genius, he is in fact neither. Rather, he is very much within his milieu, as well as a statistically likely end-product of his times. On Thursday's Mark Levin Show, the Supreme ruled on the Obamacare tax case and effectively upheld it despite Justice Alito's brilliant dissent. Justices Coney Barrett, Kavanaugh, and Thomas voted on the wrong side of this issue. Then, a US Navy Admiral is insisting that all sailors read Professor Ibrahim X. Kendi's book which contends that capitalism is effectively racist. Military leaders that uphold these destructive teachings should be booted from the US military. Should we expect more divergent views, like racial supremacy, in the future? Later, the Court now says that the State of Texas cannot build its own border wall because it has no jurisdiction over federal issues like immigration. However, the Kelo decision written by Justice Sandra Day O'Connor allows states to use the 'takings clause' to obtain property for public purposes including the protection of a state's sovereignty. Afterward, President Trump's Advisor Stephen Miller calls in to explain that AG Merrick Garland is taking a series of steps to change the US immigration system through courts run by the US Department of Justice. Garland recently overruled two Trump policies on asylum, making anyone across the globe suffering from crime or gang violence eligible for asylum in the US.

We are amid COVID-19, everyone is talking about that they hope everything will be back to normal, and as it turns out, there is no way of going back and that normalcy of life. Then, we are home-cooped up and afraid of what’s next, and George Floyd gets killed inhumanly and brutally… on camera for the world to witness. If you are human, you got angry, sad, or sick to your stomach We haven’t seen anything like this in our lifetime, and we are still in quarantine because of COVID-19. It brought fear, uncertainty, over 40 million people are unemployed, we are social more distant than ever, and the only thing keeping us connected to friends, family, and the news is the internet. It’s been two weeks since the news broke of George Floyd’s brutal death. I went silent and posted a black square on all my social media pages and stopped posting all content in solidarity of the Black Lives Matters movement so that those posts could be seen and heard. But now is the time to take action and not wait for someone else to fix that problem. A problem that has existed for over 300 hundred years and has never been fixed. Let’s come together as a community to correct this injustice once and for all. I am not an authority on equal justice, but I am learning. During my blackout week, I decided that it’s time for me to take concrete action, so I started gathering information by watching movies, reading books, articles on racial justice to become more informed on how I can help. 4 Steps I took this week, and I am not getting it all right, but I am trying We watched on Netflix: When they see us and 13th by Ava DuVernay I am reading How to be an antiracist by Ibrahim X. Kendi. Donate: We donated to the Equal Justice Initiative, but there are so many other organizations you can help. My podcast has very little diversity, and that is going to change. I have been actively looking and contacting African American women to be on the show. If you listen to this and want to share your message, contact me at heike@heikeyates.com I haven’t don’t enough, but I am promising to listen more than I speak, to share my platform for inclusion, and that it represents diversity on all front. But it’s not enough, and we can’t stop there because if the media dies down and we move on to the next story, we solve nothing and forget about the problem. We need to unite to face and solve this problem together. I am sharing 5 steps that you can take this week to be part of that change. Let’s not stand by and hope this will go away because if we want a different outcome, we have to do something different.
Episode 17 of the podcast is a discussion around the aftermath of the George Floyd murder. I bring in AbdulRahim and Dallas Wright for this episode. AbdulRahim is a Palestinian from the Bay Area.
