ATF experts analyzed the scattered remains: a nine-inch-long, one-inch-wide pipe encased in a wooden box, secured with nails, rubber bands, screws, epoxy, three-quarter-inch black plastic tape, and half-inch filament tape. The explosive was two types of smokeless powder packed in the pipe. The makeshift trigger resembled a child's plaything: a nail tensed by several rubber bands. Opening the handcrafted wooden box released the nail, which struck match heads, igniting the powder. Curiously, one end of the pipe was closed with a wooden stopper. The device was built from scavenged materials—hand-forged nails, reclaimed screws, items others might discard. Thus, the Junkyard Bomber emerged.Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theserialkillerpodcastWebsite: https://www.theserialkillerpodcast.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theskpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/serialkillerpodX: https://twitter.com/serialkillerpodSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-serial-killer-podcast. Griffin would put the blame for our environmental problems on excessive individual freedoms. Actually, most of the problems are direct or indirect results of the activities of large organizations; namely corporations and governments. It is these organizations, after all, that control the structure and development of society. Perhaps the most unfortunate thing that has ever happened to individual Liberty was its being used as an excuse for the misdeeds of huge corporations. Now the evils perpetrated by these highly collectivist organizations are blamed on individual libertySupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-serial-killer-podcast. Hosted on Acast. Online, there is a name for the experience of finding sympathy with Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber: Tedpilling. To be Tedpilled means to read Paragraph 1 of Kaczynski's manifesto, its assertion that the mad dash of technological advancement since the Industrial Revolution has “made life unfulfilling,” “led to widespread psychological suffering” and “inflicted severe damage on the natural world,” and think, Well, sure.Since Kaczynski's death by suicide in a federal prison in North Carolina nearly two years ago, the taboo surrounding the figure has been weakening. This is especially true on the right, where pessimism and paranoia about technology — largely the province of the left not long ago — have spread on the heels of the coronavirus pandemic and efforts to police speech on social media platforms. Part 2 of 2. Starting in 1978, a Montana man murdered three people and injured 23 others during a nationwide bombing campaign. Hiding behind a comfortable upbringing, mathematician degrees from prestigious universities, and his perspective of doing right by the environment, Ted Kaczynski violently opposed modern technology and industrial society. And through a 35,000-word manifesto and multiple horrific attacks -many of which were on innocent civilians- he plead his case. This is the story of the Unabomber.
They are then escorted into the gas chamber, often under heavy security, and secured to a chair with restraints around their wrists, ankles, waist, and chest to prevent movement. A stethoscope or other monitoring device is typically attached to their chest, extending outside the chamber so a physician can listen for the cessation of heartbeat or breathing, which signals death. Once the convict is secured, the chamber is sealed shut, creating an airtight environment. The execution team, located in a separate control room, activates the mechanism to initiate the gas. In the classic cyanide gas method, a container of sulfuric acid is placed beneath the chair, and a lever is pulled or a switch flipped to drop cyanide pellets or crystals into the acid. This chemical reaction produces hydrogen cyanide gas, a colorless, odorless, and highly toxic substance that interferes with the body's ability to use oxygen, binding to hemoglobin and preventing it from carrying oxygen to tissues and organs.Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theserialkillerpodcastWebsite: https://www.theserialkillerpodcast.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theskpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/serialkillerpodX: https://twitter.com/serialkillerpodSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-serial-killer-podcast. The New York Times reporter Charles Homans joins Michael to discuss his new peace "The Strange, Post-Partisan Popularity of the Unabomber'"; a piece that takes a deep dive into the life and death of Ted Kaczynski, infamously known as the "Unabomber". In this interview Homans unpacks the shocking uptick in Ted Kaczynski's popularity. Original air date 4 April 2025.
In this episode Chris and Kyle conclude their exploration of the infamous Ted Kaczynski manifesto titled: “Industrial Society and It's Future.” The later section covered in this episode hinges on one existential dialectic--Technology or Freedom? We discuss Kaczynski's opinion about the nature of freedom and how it's preservation is inconsistent with the endless advancement of technology. What will it be, Modern Man? An apocalypse Terminator-style, a voluntary species-wide self-sacrifice...or perhaps something else. Can the advance of technology provide an alternative? Might our enslaver become our savior? Or, might there be a place for two versions of society to exist alongside each other? Could Brave New World have provided the blueprint? Advanced technological utopia on one side, and "primitive" reservations on the other? Enjoy :)
1180 Inside the Criminal Mind of Luigi Mangione In this gripping episode, Richard unravels the chilling case of Luigi Mangione, a well-educated, upper-class young man suspected of murdering United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson on December 4, 2024. What drives a seemingly privileged individual to commit such a heinous act? Forensic psychologist Dr. John Brady joins Richard to dissect Mangione's psyche, drawing parallels to figures like Ted Kaczynski. Was Mangione radicalized by extreme ideologies, fueled by a belief in societal wrongs, or did a deteriorating mental state—possibly linked to COVID-induced "brain fog"—push him over the edge? Dr. Brady explores offender typologies, Machiavellian traits, and the psychological jigsaw puzzle of a man whose personality shifted dramatically before the crime. From incriminating writings to a warped sense of justice, this episode delves into the mind of a killer and asks: How does a dream of utopia twist into a nightmare of violence? GUEST: Dr. John Brady is a renowned forensic psychologist with over 25 years of experience analyzing the motivations behind heinous crimes. Having provided expert testimony in numerous high-profile criminal cases, Dr. Brady has worked alongside top defense attorneys, prosecutors, judges, private investigators, and even perpetrators. He is the author of six acclaimed books, including Psychological DNA: A Cold Case Analysis of Who Killed Robert F. Kennedy, drawn from his extensive clinical work and court records. His upcoming book examines the psyche of Lee Harvey Oswald. Known for his deep insights into deviant causation and offender typologies, Dr. Brady's expertise sheds light on why individuals surrender to violent impulses, offering a unique perspective on the complex interplay of mental states, ideology, and criminal behavior. In this episode of Crime Time, Inc., we delve into the harrowing year of 1978, a period marked by a dramatic surge in serial killer activity and other violent crimes. The discussion highlights the staggering statistics from Radford University, which show that the number of active serial killers skyrocketed from 100 in the 1940s to 765 in the 1970s. The hosts examine notable cases, including the capture of Ted Bundy and the horrifying crimes of Carlton Gary, John Wayne Gacy, and the Hillside Stranglers. The episode also touches on the international crimes of Andrei Chikatilo and Dennis Nilsen, as well as the lesser-known but equally disturbing stories of Gerald Parker and Philip Carl Jablonski. The show explores potential factors contributing to this spike in violence, such as the impact of war trauma, the development of the interstate highway system, and the role of media and pop culture. Other significant events of 1978, like Ted Kaczynski's bombing campaign and the Jonestown Massacre, are also discussed. The episode questions the societal, psychological, and environmental influences that may have created a perfect storm for such a dark chapter in criminal history, offering insights that remain relevant for understanding and preventing future tragedies.00:00 Introduction to 1978: A Year of Infamy00:23 The Rise of Serial Killers: Shocking Statistics00:56 Notorious Names: Ted Bundy and More02:08 Global Terror: Serial Killers Beyond the U.S.03:25 Other Forms of Violence: Bombings and Massacres03:47 Theories Behind the Surge: War, Media, and More04:16 The Highway System: Aiding Drifter Killers04:41 Media Influence: The Role of True Crime Fascination05:39 Societal Changes: Divorce Rates and Family Instability05:57 Environmental Factors: The Lead Theory06:27 The Complex Web: Interconnected Factors08:11 Law Enforcement Challenges: Adapting to New Realities11:50 The Human Cost: Impact on Investigators13:37 Conclusion: Learning from the Past Hosted on Acast. After the Unabomber was seen after placing his 12th bomb in 1987, he disappeared for six years. The public hoped he was finished, however Ted Kaczynski was far from done. Over the years the Unabomber task force had very little information about Ted to get closer to a suspect. That was until Ted's sister-in-law started to piece together the similarities in the bomber and her husband's brother. After nearly twenty years of terror, Ted Kaczynski was finally caught on April 3rd 1996.

MAGA has long been hostile to Big Tech. So now that Big Tech is shifting rightward, what does that mean for MAGA?“We're seeing a true political coalition having to navigate very, very big questions about how to keep themselves together,” James Pogue told me. He's a contributing writer at Times Opinion who has been covering the intellectual ferment on the New Right for years. And he just published a great piece about the tensions between the techno-optimists and skeptics within the MAGA coalition. In this conversation, we cover a lot: How the New Right's intellectual scene has evolved, the renewed fascination with Ted Kaczynski's manifesto, why some of the most passionate critics of tech are also the most online, how Robert F. Kennedy Jr. fits into this world, the New Right's ideas about masculinity and how much Donald Trump cares about any of this.Recommendations:Regime Change by Patrick Deneen“God's Socialist” by Darryl CooperBetween Two Fires by Stephen PyneThoughts? In 1978 Ted Kaczynski began what would become a series of bombings around the United States over the next two decades. Kaczynski, who was then an unknown serial bomber, wanted to rid the country of modern technology which he believed was destroying human minds and society. By 1996, the Unabomber had killed three and injured twenty nine others with his carefully crafted homemade bombs. The investigation into the Unabomber was the most expensive investigation in the history of the FBI with an estimated to cost around 50 million dollars.

From Privilege to Peril: The Chilling Case of Luigi Mangione From Ivy League accolades to being implicated in one of the most chilling crimes of 2024, the story of Luigi Mangione is as perplexing as it is tragic. On December 4, 2024, UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was gunned down outside a Hilton hotel in Manhattan. In the days that followed, authorities pieced together a chain of evidence that would lead them to the 26-year-old Mangione, a man with no prior criminal record but a life increasingly marked by turmoil. His arrest in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on December 9 shook not only his family but also those who had known him as a promising young professional with everything to lose. The facts, as presented by law enforcement, are as shocking as they are methodical. Surveillance footage placed Mangione near the scene of the crime, and a chilling manifesto found in his possession allegedly outlined grievances against the healthcare industry. Bullet casings recovered from the scene bore inscriptions that read “delay,” “deny,” and “defend”—a grim nod to the language often used to describe the tactics of health insurers. According to the manifesto, Mangione expressed disdain for what he called “systemic greed” and apologized “for any strife or traumas” caused by his actions, which he described as “necessary.” A Legacy of Privilege Born in 1998 into Baltimore's prominent Mangione family, Luigi Nicholas Mangione appeared destined for success. His grandfather, Nicholas Mangione Sr., built a multi-million-dollar real estate empire, and the family's name became synonymous with philanthropy and business acumen. Luigi attended the elite Gilman School, where he graduated as valedictorian in 2016 before earning dual degrees in engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. Friends and colleagues described him as ambitious, intelligent, and reserved, with a deep interest in artificial intelligence and data science. Professionally, Mangione climbed the ranks as a data engineer at TrueCar and was poised for a lucrative career in tech. Yet, behind the accolades, Mangione's life took a darker turn. In mid-2023, he underwent spinal surgery to address spondylolisthesis, a condition causing chronic back pain. While the surgery initially seemed successful, Mangione's online posts revealed ongoing struggles with physical discomfort and cognitive issues, which he attributed to the procedure. By late 2023, his once-active social media accounts fell silent, and friends noted his increasing isolation. His mother's November 2024 missing persons report highlighted this estrangement, suggesting a deepening personal crisis. In the weeks leading up to the murder, Mangione's behavior raised additional red flags. Former colleagues at TrueCar described a once-dedicated worker who had become withdrawn and erratic. His posts on niche online forums revealed a man consumed by frustrations over systemic failures, particularly within the healthcare industry. These grievances culminated in his manifesto, which criticized the U.S. healthcare system for prioritizing profits over patient care and expressed admiration for the United Kingdom's National Health Service. Mangione's writings also delved into broader societal grievances, including concerns about technology's role in diminishing human agency. This perspective, reportedly inspired in part by the Unabomber's manifesto, paints a picture of a man wrestling with ideological disillusionment. The discovery of bullet casings inscribed with the words “delay,” “deny,” and “defend” added a symbolic layer to the crime. This phrase, widely used to describe insurer tactics to avoid paying claims, provided insight into Mangione's motivations. Investigators believe the inscriptions were meant to serve as a grim statement against what he perceived as systemic greed. As authorities delved deeper into Mangione's background, they uncovered a complex individual with conflicting traits. Despite his frustrations, Mangione had previously been an advocate for technology's potential to solve real-world problems. Friends from his university days recalled late-night discussions about artificial intelligence and its ethical implications. However, his fascination with technology's darker side—its potential to erode human autonomy—also became evident over time. His admiration for figures like Ted Kaczynski, albeit tempered by a rejection of violence, hinted at his growing disillusionment. One particularly illuminating piece of evidence was Mangione's online activity in the months leading up to the murder. On various forums, he shared detailed accounts of his chronic pain, frustrations with the healthcare system, and his perception of its failings. He often spoke about how the exorbitant costs and bureaucratic inefficiencies of American healthcare had worsened his quality of life. These posts not only offered a window into his deteriorating mental state but also provided crucial context for investigators attempting to piece together a motive. Friends and acquaintances who had drifted apart from Mangione over the years described their shock at hearing the allegations against him. Some recalled a reserved yet passionate individual, prone to intense discussions about ethics, technology, and societal structures. Others noted a more recent change, describing him as distant and preoccupied. “He seemed to be carrying a lot of weight on his shoulders,” said one former classmate who spoke on condition of anonymity. “It's hard to reconcile the Luigi I knew with the person described in the news.” Unanswered Questions The evidence against Mangione, while compelling, raises more questions than answers. How did a man with so much potential—a valedictorian, a Penn graduate, a data engineer—find himself accused of murder? What role, if any, did his struggles with chronic pain and disillusionment play in his alleged actions? And was this crime the result of a calculated plan or a tragic breaking point? The Mangione family has expressed shock and devastation, offering condolences to Brian Thompson's family while grappling with the implications of Luigi's arrest. “We are devastated by this news,” said his cousin, Maryland State Delegate Nino Mangione, in a public statement. “We ask people to pray for all involved.” Legal Implications and Broader Conversations Legal experts following the case have noted its potential to set significant precedents. The inclusion of terrorism-related charges suggests that prosecutors are framing this as more than a personal vendetta—it's being positioned as an ideologically motivated act. If convicted, Mangione could face life in prison without the possibility of parole. However, his defense team has already signaled their intent to scrutinize his mental health history and argue that his actions, while tragic, were the product of untreated psychological issues exacerbated by chronic pain and systemic failures. As Mangione's legal journey unfolds, it promises to be a high-profile case that will examine not only the evidence but also the psychological and societal factors at play. His decision to waive extradition paves the way for what is expected to be a closely watched trial in New York. Legal experts suggest that the inclusion of terrorism-related charges could set a significant legal precedent, particularly in cases involving ideological motivations. Beyond the legal arena, the case has sparked broader conversations about the intersection of privilege, mental health, and radicalization. How does someone from such a privileged background—with access to elite education, healthcare, and opportunities—end up accused of such a heinous crime? The answer may lie in a complex web of personal struggles, societal pressures, and ideological disillusionment. The courtroom will likely become a stage for broader debates about mental health, societal pressures, and systemic failures. For now, the story of Luigi Mangione serves as a sobering reminder of the complexities behind even the most shocking acts of violence. It is a case that defies easy categorization, blending elements of privilege, pain, and radicalization into a narrative that continues to unfold. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?

Jay-Z says a rape allegation made against him is part of an extortion attempt. A woman who previously sued Sean “Diddy” Combs, alleging she was raped at an awards show after-party in 2000 when she was 13, amended the lawsuit Sunday to include a new allegation that Jay-Z was also at the party and participated in the sexual assault. The 24-time Grammy award winning rapper, producer and music mogul called the allegations “idiotic” and “heinous in nature” in a statement released by Roc Nation, one of his companies. He also revealed that he had anonymously sued the woman's lawyer, Tony Buzbee, last month, alleging he was trying to blackmail the rapper by threatening to make the rape allegation public if he didn't agree to a legal settlement. He said Buzbee sent a letter to his lawyer appearing to seek a settlement, but that the letter had the “opposite effect” on him. Mangione was charged Monday night with second-degree murder in the killing of 50-year-old Thompson. Investigators suspect that Mangione held a grudge against the medical insurance agency and may have been inspired by Ted Kaczynski, the mathematician-turn-domestic terrorist known as the "Unabomber" who blamed technology for a decline of individual freedom and mailed handcrafted explosives to targeted individuals between 1978 and 1995. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thatsnotchristian/support
The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 1: 3:05pm- On Monday, police arrested a person of interest in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson—who was specifically targeted and shot in Manhattan last week. A 26-year-old tech whiz and Ivy League graduate is being questioned in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, who was shot outside the New York Hilton Midtown last week in what authorities describe as a calculated and targeted attack. Luigi Mangione, of Towson, Maryland, was detained Monday morning at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Law enforcement sources say he was apprehended after customers reported his suspicious behavior. When police arrived, they discovered a gun with a silencer, multiple fake IDs, and a manifesto criticizing the U.S. healthcare system. Mangione has not been charged but is considered a person of interest in the case. Authorities are investigating whether he traveled to Altoona by bus from Philadelphia after fleeing the crime scene in Manhattan. Thompson was killed last week by a masked assailant who approached him from behind at approximately 6:45 a.m. Surveillance footage captured the gunman fleeing on foot and then on a bicycle into Central Park. The suspect was last seen boarding a bus at a depot in Upper Manhattan, prompting a multi-state manhunt. The shooting sent shock waves across corporate and healthcare sectors. Thompson, a prominent figure in the industry, was known for his leadership in one of the nation's largest private healthcare providers. Mangione's manifesto reportedly condemns the healthcare industry for prioritizing profit over patient care. Law enforcement sources suggest that Mangione's animosity may stem from personal experiences, as he lost close relatives in 2013 and 2017. During high school, Mangione worked briefly at an assisted-living facility, an experience that might have shaped his perspective. Authorities also found evidence of Mangione's affinity for anti-capitalist causes and environmental activism. His online activity included approving quotes from Ted Kaczynski, the notorious “Unabomber,” as well as philosophical musings from figures like Socrates and Bruce Lee. The FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest, which is in addition to a $10,000 reward from Crime Stoppers and the NYPD. The incident has sparked debates on the safety of corporate executives and the broader implications of resentment toward the healthcare industry. Online reaction to Thompson's murder has been mixed, with some expressing outrage and others highlighting grievances against private healthcare providers. Law enforcement officials are monitoring these discussions as part of their investigation. Mangione's Background A valedictorian of the prestigious Gilman School in Baltimore, Mangione graduated in 2016 before pursuing artificial intelligence studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Once described as a promising student in computer and cognitive sciences, Mangione's trajectory took a dark turn as he delved into radical ideologies. While authorities believe the shooter acted alone, they are piecing together the timeline of events leading to Thompson's killing. Mangione's motives and whether he has confessed remain unclear. This developing case underscores the intersection of personal grievances, ideological extremism, and violent action, leaving many in shock and mourning over the loss of a corporate leader. Investigators continue to urge anyone with information to come forward. #UnitedHealthcare #BrianThompson #LuigiMangione #HealthcareMurder #Altoona Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? It's Tuesday, December 10h, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson and Adam McManus Persecution of Christians up in Indonesia The General Assembly of the Communion of Churches in Indonesia has announced growth in the Christian faith in that country. The organization pointed to seven new Christian groups, each with at least 10,000 members added to the list. While the church has grown in Indonesia, the believers' very presence has led to persecution in the Muslim-majority nation where 87% are Muslim and about 10% Christian. According to Persecution.org, the SETARA Institute recorded 217 incidents where religious freedom was violated in 2023. That's up from 175 in 2022. Also, in 2023, places of worship were disturbed 65 times in Indonesia. That was up from 16 incidents in 2017. For example, one local province banned a Christmas choir practice for a Catholic Church earlier this month — requiring permission from the government for this “religious activity.” Syrian president fled country for Russia The Middle East is in more turmoil. After 13 years of civil war, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has fled the country for Russia. Syria's government has been turned over to a rebel faction led by a former Al Qaeda fighter named Abu Mohammad al-Jolani. The new government will be headed by a party espousing hardline Sunni Islamist ideology. In excess of a half a million Syrians have lost their lives in the civil war, and millions have left the country. In God's providence, Iran's influence in the Middle East has diminished greatly, with the loss of an ally in Al-Assad and Israel's crushing of Hezbollah in Lebanon. For now, Iran and Russia are seen as losers, and Turkey and Israel are seen as winners in the ongoing saga. China initiates naval drill off coast of Taiwan Communist China has initiated a third and more significant naval drill encompassing the coasts of Taiwan, reports CNN. This comes after the U.S. approved $2 billion in more arms sales for Taiwan. China vowed “strong countermeasures” to the action, reports the South China Morning Post. Psalm 46 assures that it is God who “makes wars cease to the end of the Earth; He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two; He burns the chariot in the fire.” CEO killer suspect caught Police nabbed Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, while he was chowing down at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania. He's an anti-capitalist Ivy League grad who liked online quotes from the “Unabomber'' Ted Kaczynski — and seethed in a manifesto, “These parasites had it coming,” reports the New York Post. Officers found a black 3D-printed pistol and a black silencer in Mangione's backpack. He graduated cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Computer and Information Science in 2020 The tech whiz, originally from Towson, Maryland, apparently hated the medical community because of how it treated his sick relative. The suspect also may have held a grudge because of his own interactions with the industry, noting an X-ray photo on his X account showing four pins in his spine. Trump on Meet the Press: Liz Cheney should go to jail On Sunday, President-elect Donald Trump was on NBC's Meet the Press, suggesting that jail time might be appropriate for former GOP Congresswoman Liz Cheney of Wyoming and others on the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack who pursued prosecution for January 6th protestors back in 2021. He also alleged that the committee destroyed evidence after a year and a half of testimony. Listen. TRUMP: “They deleted and destroyed a whole year and a half worth of testimony. I think those people committed a major crime.” KRISTEN WELKER: “Sir?” TRUMP: “and [former Congresswoman Liz] Cheney was behind it.” WELKER: “Well.” TRUMP: “and so was [Democrat Congressman] Bennie Thompson. And everybody on that committee. For what they did,” WELKER: “Yeah.” TRUMP: “Honestly, they should go to jail.” KRISTEN WELKER: “So, you think Liz Cheney should go to jail?” TRUMP: “For what they did.” WELKER: “Everyone on the committee, you said.” TRUMP: “I think everybody. Anybody that voted in favor …” WELKER: “Are you going to direct your FBI Director and your Attorney General to send them to jail?” TRUMP: “Not at all. I think that they'll have to look at that. But I'm not going to. I'm going to focus on ‘Drill, baby drill.'” WELKER: “When you say that it carries weight though. You've tapped these people to lead the Justice Department and FBI.” TRUMP: “They can do whatever they want.” WELKER: “Okay.” TRUMP: “Biden can give them a pardon if he wants to, and maybe he should.” But Trump said, the decision to prosecute Liz Cheney would be left to his Attorney General appointee. Trump eager to issue pardons to most January 6th protestors In related news and in that same interview. President-elect Trump is looking at issuing pardons on his first day in office for those caught up in the January 6th investigations. The Biden Justice Department has prosecuted 1,572 persons in the protest. Over 1,200 of these have pleaded guilty or have been proven guilty in trial. 321 defendants pleaded guilty to felonies and 675 have pleaded guilty to misdemeanors. Here's Kristen Welker with the question. WELKER: “You promised to pardon those who attacked the Capitol on January 6th. Are you still vowing to follow through with that promise?” TRUMP: “We're looking at it right now. Most likely, yeah.” WELKER: “Well, you know.” TRUMP: “Those people have suffered long and hard. And there may be some exceptions to it. I have to look. You know, if somebody was radical, crazy. There might be some people from Antifa there. I don't know. These people have suffered. Their lives have been destroyed.” The degree of violence occurring at the January 6th protest is under debate, however. FactCheck.org notes that no police officers died — while one officer did suffer a stroke and five committed suicide days or months after the January 6th event. In addition, 17 officers suffered injuries during the protests that resulted in loss of days at work. By contrast, some 2,035 police officers were injured during the 2020 George Floyd riots. PoliceMag.com reports that “16,241 protesters and rioters were arrested. Nearly 17% of the arrests were for felonies and 7% of the total involved violence. Many of the cases were quickly dismissed.” New York jury acquits Daniel Penny A New York jury has acquitted Daniel Penny of all charges Monday, reports NBC News. He was the marine charged with manslaughter and negligent homicide for allegedly killing a young man in a subway who was threatening to kill people on the subway, according to witnesses. The victim, Jordan Neely, had an extensive criminal record of 42 arrests. Emotions are running high after the verdict. A New York Black Lives Matter leader, Hawk Newsome, called for vigilantes to kill others “who have attempted to oppress us.” Wherever this applies, let us remember what Jesus said: “Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.” (Matthew 5:44) Was there an alphabet in the days of Noah? And finally, could there have been an alphabet used for written human communications as far back as the days of Noah? That's what researchers have discovered from an excavation in a tomb in northern Syria, located about 500 miles west of where the ark would have rested. Characters that appear to be a real alphabet were etched into clay cylinders dated to 2400 BC. Close And that's The Worldview on this Tuesday, December 10th, in the year of our Lord 2024. [This blog will always be free to read, but it's also how I pay my bills. If you have suggestions or feedback on how I can earn your paid subscription, shoot me an email: cmclymer@gmail.com.]It's been six days since UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was murdered outside the New York Hilton Midtown just before 7am.The assassin, 26 year-old Luigi Mangione, was apprehended yesterday at a McDonald's in Altoona, PA after an employee there recognized him from publicly released images and called the police. He was carrying a 3D printed gun, a 3D printed silencer, several fake IDs, and a three-page manifesto in defense of the murder. Was he hoping to get caught? It sure seems like it.As with so many other issues in our increasingly divided country, the incident has become far less about discussing the particulars in good faith and more about aggressively rationalizing our biases and shutting down anyone who challenges them.America's health care system is severely broken, held in place by insurance companies who routinely engage in unethical practices for which the primary goal is prioritizing corporate profits over sick people, enabled by enough lawmakers who directly benefit from preserving that status quo.Meanwhile, the country is quite clearly veering into an era in which political violence is increasingly seen by many as not only acceptable but necessary. In his manifesto, Mangione wrote: “I do apologize for any strife or traumas, but it had to be done. Frankly, these parasites had it coming.”Bizarrely, in his Goodreads four-star review of “Industrial Society and Its Future” by Ted Kaczynski—better known to us plebs as “The Unabomber Manifesto”—he wrote that Kaczynski was “rightfully imprisoned” but also:“When all other forms of communication fail, violence is necessary to survive. You may not like his methods, but to see things from his perspective, it's not terrorism, it's war and revolution… […] Peaceful protest is outright ignored, economic protest isn't possible in the current system, so how long until we recognize that violence against those who lead us to such destruction is justified as self-defense.”Yeah, that's certainly one way to sum it up.Here's another way: Ted Kaczynski was a vile, self-absorbed piece-of-s**t who intentionally murdered and maimed innocent people from the comfort of his remote cabin and justified it with a narcissistic pseudo-intellectualism instead of, you know, having the guts to engage in the hard work of advocacy. He was not a revolutionary. He was a terrorist and a coward whose actions only served to inspire a generation of more self-absorbed extremists, and I'm really glad he's no longer walking the earth.Of course, some will whine this is unfair framing because Mangione targeted a horrible enabler of this unfair system rather than innocent people, he's merely agreeing with Kaczynski on the principle of violence as necessary, and our disgust should be with corporations who have willingly bankrupted and/or enabled the deaths of millions.Of course we should be disgusted with these corporations. They're cruel and predatory and inhumane. They knowingly exploit the suffering of innocent and sick people to maximize profit. But just for the sake of argument, let's briefly allow these other things to be true: Mangione was right to murder Thompson, health care executives deserve any violence coming to them, etc.Okay, so, what now? Tell me what happens next. Because in the past week, I have read zero commentary that answers this with any degree of sufficient reason. The hopeful wish—and I think even that's generous—is that health care executives will somehow be intimidated into curbing their unethical practices out of fear being targeted next. Are you kidding me? Health care executives aren't going to let a little homicide get in the way of their profits. They'll beef up security, hire the best PR professionals money can buy, increase lobbying to complicit lawmakers, and leverage this murder for sympathy. And it will work. You know how I know that? Because we just had an election in which an openly corrupt champion of corporate greed who still hasn't released his supposed health care plan since he first ran for president eight years ago was picked over a policy expert who had a defined health care plan and was nominated by a political party that achieved the greatest health care reform in modern history. How many millions of people openly cheering on Mangione stayed home or even voted for Trump? How many of them had time to share memes online but not organize family and friends and neighbors to get out the vote because of purity politics or VP Harris just isn't likable or Democrats aren't good enough or both parties are the same (they are clearly not) or, hell, someone else will do that work, so why bother?Mangione is one of them. Here's this Ivy League educated young man from a privileged family and an impressive social network who could have tried to use those resources to change the system. But he didn't even try. He didn't venture into health care advocacy or do any political organizing on this. He read a manifesto written by a violent clown and decided it better served either his ego or convenience to murder a health care executive on the street than undertake the difficult work of reform. My issue is not with the millions of people in this country who have said over the past week that they're not mourning the murder of Thompson because Thompson sure as hell didn't mourn their loved ones who have been cruelly victimized by corporations like UnitedHealthcare. They're well within their right to feel that way. I come from a family background in which it was obvious growing up that insurance companies would sooner allow us to die or be financially ruined than grant us the care we need. I get it.My problem isn't with the millions people who are rightly pointing out all the ways in which UnitedHealthcare is evil and openly asking: where is the sympathy for the most vulnerable in this country when they perish because executives have decided their lives and livelihoods aren't profitable? That is absolutely necessary to ask and demand an answer to it.My problem is with Mangione and people like him who don't do the work that needs to be done and encourage political violence as a supposed last straw—not having really tried other approaches in good faith—which, in the end, will only further normalize a growing culture of political violence that overwhelmingly harms the innocent and most vulnerable.Murdering people in the street is ultimately wrong not because it's a question of whether or not the person murdered deserves it but because it further erodes the social guardrail, which is thinning at an alarming rate, that it's immoral to inflict violence on others out of political and policy disagreements.Political violence solves nothing. It never has. All it does is offer a brief sense of smug satisfaction for some, fuel for the worst people to continue doing what they do, and more than enough room for dead innocents after that.Charlotte's Web Thoughts is a reader-supported publication. Ted Kaczynski was an American mathematician and domestic terrorist who mailed bombs from 1978 through 1995 and scared the hell out of the American public until his arrest in 1996. Most people remember the hooded sunglasses sketch, but not the message and certainly not the reason why Ted decided to take things to the extreme. The Unabomber's Manifesto is a 35,000-word document detailing his fight against industrialization and the destruction of nature in the name of progress. Was Uncle Ted just a paranoid lunatic living in a cabin in the middle of nowhere, or was he made that way by being part of a much darker experiment back in his college days?

OA1057 We're giving ourselves a break this week from Trump, the Supreme Court, and all things 2024 to indulge in one of Matt's all-time favorite subjects: CIA mind control experiments! In this extra-carefully-researched episode, Matt breaks down the history of the federal government's MKULTRA program to fund research in brainwashing, mind control, and LSD on unsuspecting U.S. and (for some reason) Canadian citizens, as well as the inherent legal issues in trying to sue the CIA for something you can't remember and for which most evidence has been destroyed. Why was the CIA funding a sadistic mad scientist in Montreal, and is there any hope of justice for the families of his victims today?
