Do you reflect on your experiences with self-criticism? In this episode, I revisit a powerful narrative technique called the "Once-Upon-a-Time" technique that helps you gain perspective on challenging situations and cultivate self-compassion. This two-part reflective practice transforms how you view your experiences by allowing you to step back and observe yourself through the lens of a neutral observer. The technique involves writing about a meaningful experience twice - first from your personal perspective, and then rewriting it as if you're an anthropologist studying someone else's story. Through this process, you discover hidden thought patterns and create space for a more balanced, compassionate view of yourself and your actions. In this episode, I explore the knowing-doing gap – that puzzling space where we intellectually understand what would help us, but can't seem to follow through. I offer a simple three-part tool to help you bridge this gap with curiosity and compassion rather than judgment and frustration. One thing nobody tells you before you step into a classroom is just how much behaviour will challenge you. Not just your strategies. You. Your nervous system. Your confidence. Your sense of self.In this episode, I'm talking about what it really feels like to manage behaviour in the moment – especially when you're young, new, or not naturally loud or assertive. Do you try to fix or suppress your anger, and feel guilty if you can't? Many of us have been taught to see anger as shameful, unprofessional, or even dangerous. As a result, we bottle it up, push it down, and try to ignore it. The cost of burying anger is emotional exhaustion and disconnection from ourselves. In this episode, I share a different approach to anger – one that views it not as a liability but as a messenger. I offer three powerful prompts to help you relate to your anger differently, allowing you to rebuild inner trust and reconnect with your authentic self without fear of explosive expression. Do you ever feel like you've lost touch with who you really are? That somewhere along the way, between the endless to-do lists, caring for others, and just trying to survive each day, you've forgotten what makes you feel alive? This episode offers a compassionate look at why we lose ourselves and practical steps to find our way back. Have you ever felt like there's a committee of conflicting voices in your head, each pulling you in different directions? In this episode, I explore a deceptively simple yet powerful approach: treating the different parts of your mind as if they were actual people. I share a practical pen-and-paper exercise that helps externalize what's swirling in your mind, giving you perspective on your inner landscape. This approach, rooted in Internal Family Systems, isn't about creating multiple personalities—it's about understanding why you do what you do so you can respond intentionally rather than react automatically. By treating your parts like people, you create space for compassion and tap into the wise core of who you are beneath all the mental noise. Have you ever wondered what's actually holding you back from changing your most frustrating habits? As a natural problem-solver and detective at heart, I've discovered that our most persistent habits aren't just behaviors to be modified, they're symptoms of deeper burdens our internal parts are carrying. Today, I'm sharing a powerful framework that offers genuine hope for lasting change. The concept of the Unburdened System, beautifully illustrated by Mariel Pastor, provides a north star for what's possible when we heal the root causes of our habits. This isn't about quick fixes or surface-level strategies—it's about understanding how our internal parts can transform when freed from the emotional burdens they've been carrying. Calm corners look great online – but in reality? Students can ignore them, misuse them, or turn them into a hangout spot. You're left wondering if they're even worth it in a busy secondary classroom where time, space, and structure are limited. You want to support emotional regulation, but not at the expense of learning.I'll take you through how I create calm spaces that actually support self-regulation – without turning your classroom into a free-for-all – and how I embed emotional literacy and co-regulation into my behaviour approach.IN THIS EPISODE, I DISCUSS:Why calm corners often fail in secondary classroomsWhat needs to happen before you set one upMy “pocket calm corner” and the tools students actually useHow to embed regulation without disrupting the flow of your lessonSo, are calm corners worth the rage in secondary? Yes – but only if they're adapted to work in our world. Have you ever felt something uncomfortable and immediately wanted to make it go away? I know that feeling all too well. When discomfort arises—whether it's anxiety, shame, or frustration—my first instinct is to fix it as quickly as possible. It's like having a reflex that kicks in before I can even think about it. In today's episode, I explore why this fixing reflex, though completely natural, often backfires. When we rush to fix our uncomfortable emotions, we're actually extending their stay. I'll walk you through practical ways to access curiosity even when it feels impossible, and why having the courage to drop the fight against your feelings is ultimately less exhausting than continuing to resist them. In this video, I dive into the groundbreaking work of Marija Gimbutas, an incredible archaeologist and anthropologist who dedicated her life to studying goddess imagery in the archaeological sites of Old Europe. Through her research, she uncovered over 20,000 representations of the goddess and documented a matriarchal culture that thrived between 10,000 BCE and 2,000 BCE—one deeply rooted in the worship of the earth goddess and the female form as the central spiritual figure. This episode lays the foundation for a new series where I'll explore the ancient symbols found on architecture, vases, pottery, and art—many of which Gimbutas identified in her studies. In this first installment, we'll focus on the egg as a symbol of creation, fertility, and the generative power of the goddess. I'll share ways you can work with this symbol to tap into your own creative potential, including artistic practices and gardening rituals.I hope this series inspires you and offers meaningful ways to connect with the wisdom of the ancestors and the sacred symbols of the old world. To listen to more about the work of Marija Gimbutas from my episode "Plants, Politics & Power: How to Take Action & Create Change click here: https://youtu.be/qPqpfeLfa2k?feature=shared————2025 HERBAL FOUNDATIONS APPRENTICESHIP
You're not failing at behaviour because you're “just not cut out for it.” And no, it's not because you don't have that magic voice or commanding presence either. The truth? Most of us simply weren't taught how to manage behaviour effectively. And it shows – not because we're not trying hard enough, but because no one gave us the tools to begin with.In this episode, I'm taking you right back to where it all began for me: the whopping 20 minutes of behaviour training I received across two degrees, and how it left me wildly unprepared for what came next. From sinking in my first classroom to swimming thanks to exceptional mentors, I'm sharing what made the biggest difference – and how you can find the same transformation.IN THIS EPISODE, I DISCUSS:Why your struggles with behaviour are absolutely not your faultA behind-the-scenes story from my first chaotic solo lesson (yes, there were flying keyboards)How real, effective classroom management support turned things around for meWhat “The Confident Classroom Pathway” is – and how it can help you feel calm, in control, and confidentClassroom management doesn't have to feel like constant firefighting. The right support – practical, actionable, evidence-based – can change everything. Have you ever felt so stuck that you don't know which way is up or down? That disorienting feeling where you're bewildered about how to take even the first step forward? It's a frustrating place to be, cycling through thoughts of "I have no clue what to do" while flitting between half-completed tasks instead of tackling what truly matters. In today's episode, I'm offering you a lifeline for those moments when you feel hopelessly stuck. I'll share why we get stuck in the first place, what might be happening beneath the surface, and most importantly, a practical "cheat sheet" you can use immediately to start finding your way forward. Have you ever felt like different parts of your personality are in conflict, pulling you in opposite directions? Inside each of us exists a complex system of thoughts, emotions, and impulses that can sometimes feel like a crowded vehicle with multiple drivers trying to take the wheel. In this episode, I explore a simple yet powerful analogy using Internal Family Systems (IFS) that compares our mind to a passenger van filled with different aspects of our personality. This comparison helps explain why we sometimes act in ways that surprise us, feel conflicting emotions simultaneously, or struggle to break free from stubborn habits. You're in the middle of a lesson, focused on delivering content, when a student walks in displaying behaviours that signal things are about to escalate. Maybe they look angry, and you know they have the potential to become physical. Maybe they're swearing, laughing, and trying to draw in the rest of the class. Maybe they walk in and tip over a chair.Your brain immediately goes into survival mode. You feel the pressure to fix the situation, regain control, and keep the lesson on track. It's completely understandable—you're being observed, you have content to cover, and you want a calm classroom. But here's the thing: your goal in that moment is not to fix the behaviour, but to de-escalate it.In this episode, I break down the difference between pushing students further up the escalation cycle (Door #1) and creating pathways down (Door #2). I'll share practical strategies for staying calm, using non-threatening language, and guiding students toward a place where they can self-regulate—so that meaningful behaviour conversations can happen later, when they're actually ready.Listen in as I discuss:Why fixing behaviour in the moment is not the goal. Understanding the brain's stress response. The two doors we open during de-escalation. One escalates behaviour, the other creates a pathway down.Practical strategies for de-escalating big behaviours. Why do we keep repeating habits, even when we desperately want to stop? If you've ever found yourself thinking, “Why can't I just have more willpower?” when trying to change a deeply ingrained behavior, there's a deeper reason behind it. Breaking old habits isn't about willpower, it's about understanding why they exist in the first place. In today's episode, I use Internal Family Systems (IFS) to explore the fundamental reasons why we repeat habits, even when they no longer serve us. Check out my Brain Break Bundle! As a secondary English teacher, I used to struggle with the idea of brain breaks. The pressure to get through content and prepare students for exams felt too overwhelming to justify stopping for “games.”But my classroom culture was suffering. Students were stressed, disengaged, and burnt out—especially during heavy writing sessions leading up to exams. So I decided to try something different. When I started embedding brain breaks into my lessons, I immediately saw positive shifts.Students focused better and produced stronger writing.Transitions became smoother because I could use movement-based games instead of battling student resistance.Apathy decreased, and energy in the room improved.Rapport and community strengthened as brain breaks became a consistent, positive routine. The result? In today's episode, I'm sharing a simple yet powerful transition technique that can help you regain student attention without raising your voice or using unnecessary energy.Transitions can be one of the trickiest parts of classroom management. Picture this: students are engaged in a group task, there's movement, chatter, and productive chaos, but now you need to bring them back to whole-class instruction. Rather than calling for attention repeatedly, try this:Play transition music—a predetermined song that signals to students it's time to shift back.Project your laptop screen onto the board and type your instructions in big, bold font for students to follow. This method is non-verbal, calm, direct, and engaging. It saves your voice, adds a bit of novelty, and helps students smoothly transition without unnecessary disruption. One of the most powerful shifts we can make when addressing student behaviour is to stop lecturing and start leading. Instead of telling students what they did wrong, we need to ask the right questions to guide them toward reflection, accountability, and change.Lecturing rarely leads to buy-in. It is one of William Glasser's seven disconnecting habits, and without realising it, we often fall into this trap—especially in the heat of the moment. The result? Students tune out, nod along without truly listening, or push back entirely. In this episode, I explore how shifting from lecture mode to guide mode creates a more productive and effective approach to behaviour chats. I provide real-world examples of common classroom scenarios and show you exactly how to replace lecturing with guiding questions that encourage self-reflection and responsibility.Listen in as I discuss:Why lecturing does not create real behaviour change. In this video, I explore the true meaning of “politics” and how understanding its roots can help us move beyond overwhelm and into action. We'll look at history for guidance—where systems fail us, where they offer hope, and how we can take small yet meaningful steps toward change. One of the voices that inspires me is Marija Gimbutas, a Lithuanian archaeologist and anthropologist who uncovered evidence of matriarchal societies in "Old Europe"—cultures rooted in peace, equality, and cooperation. Her work reminds me that another way is possible, and that we have the power to shape it.I'll share what I see as the two essential pillars for reclaiming our power: the path of prayer and the path of action. These together form a stable foundation for meaningful work in the world. Along the way, I'll provide links to resources—books, films, and organizations—that can help you connect with movements for change, including plant-protecting initiatives across the country. We are not powerless. There are strong opinions when it comes to consequences in schools. Some believe in strict enforcement—"do the crime, do the time"—while others advocate for restorative conversations and plans. Regardless of approach, one thing remains essential: we need student buy-in for consequences to be effective.Without buy-in, consequences lose their impact. The students who struggle the most are often already expecting punishments like detention or suspension. They wear a mask that says, "I don't care." But the truth is, punitive measures rarely lead to real behaviour change. In this episode, I discuss how to create meaningful consequences that students actually care about.
