Koko is a same-race Black adoptee with 15 years of experience in community behavioral health. She holds a master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and is a Professional Clinical Counselor. As the Director of Fine Arts, she invests her time in deepening meaningful instruction and programming for students 3 to 14 years old and cultivates partnerships in the surrounding museums and theater districts that allow for the unique fine arts experience at PS. Courtney enjoys curating her fine arts department with diverse practicing artists and professionals who excel in their trade, whether it is in performing art, visual art or digital art. A life-long learner herself, Courtney always knew she would be a teacher. Courtney received her Bachelor of Arts in French from Vanderbilt University, her Master of Music from Rice University and is currently pursuing a Masters in Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from University of Houston. Courtney has conducted choirs of all ages at Palmer Memorial Episocpal Church and University of St. Thomas. We spoke with Emily about the tragic car accident two days after her 16th birthday that left her paralyzed, the grit and determination it took for her to earn a Masters Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and the incredible support she received from her family, especially early on after her accident. We also talked about the devastating loss of her boyfriend Zach in a hit-and-run accident, the courage it takes to live on your own as a quadriplegic, and her amazing dog Azul. Renée takes us inside the day-to-day realities of co-response work, from gas station interventions to family crises, sharing the de-escalation strategies that work in the field and the safety protocols that protect both clinicians and community members. We discuss the challenges of navigating different professional languages between mental health and law enforcement, the current state of community mental health resources, and how this collaborative model is achieving a 98% diversion rate from incarceration to treatment.
