Casey McFarland, LAPC, NCC. Along with my Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, I also earned a certificate in Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Counseling, which gives me a professional framework to deconstruct religious structures that have caused harm. As a secular therapist, I offer care that honors each person's values without imposing religious frameworks—something especially important for those who've felt unseen or harmed in traditional spaces. At the heart of my work is the belief that healing is possible, that growth comes in many forms, and that we all have the ability to reclaim our lives and move forward with strength and purpose. While most clinicians are seeking effective clinical skills to bring back to their clients, NARM® therapists are often surprised to experience such profound personal transformation for themselves through training in NARM. In learning more about themselves and their own healing process, the result is a better understanding of their client's healing process. Self-discovery can be a vehicle toward personal and relational change. On this episode of Transforming Trauma, host Emily Ruth invites NARM Master Therapists Alex White and Sabrena Ness to share their professional experiences as members of the NARM training community and personal journeys of self-discovery. The trio also discusses the mentorship programs that support ongoing professional development and personal growth hosted by the Complex Trauma Training Center, as well as opportunities for stronger community engagement and support. About Sabrena Ness: Sabrena Ness is a Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CMHC) in Utah and a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Colorado. She earned her Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of Wyoming. Sabrena is the Clinical Director at LifeStance Health in Utah and has been with LifeStance since 2021. She also serves as a Co-Chair for the Pacific Northwest region of LifeStance's Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) chapter, where she focuses on fostering an inclusive and supportive workplace culture. Sabrena specializes in complex developmental trauma and complex PTSD, working with individuals and couples across the lifespan. She is particularly dedicated to supporting LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent populations, creating affirming and effective therapeutic spaces. She is a NARM Therapist and participates as a Training Assistant in NARM Trainings, reinforcing her commitment to advancing trauma-informed care. Her work emphasizes innovative leadership, continuous improvement, and a deep dedication to mental health advocacy. Braeden Jensen is a Mental Health Counselor and previously worked as a full-time Seminary teacher. Spending seven years in a high school classroom opened his eyes to a number of things. It changed his ability to listen and sharpened his aptitude for empathy. The more he sat with and listened to students, the more he saw and felt how many people are hurting in very real ways. At the same time, Braeden considered how therapy had helped him find hope and healing. The puzzle pieces quickly came together: "You can help more people in some tangible, substantial ways." After pursuing his Clinical Mental Health Counseling degree, he recently left the classroom full-time to find more fulfillment in helping others enjoy freedom, peace, and healing. He loves seeing people overcome trauma, depression, anxiety, and addiction, and heal their relationships along the way. “Students will often refer to voice lessons, to choir rehearsal, as therapy. I felt that there was something to that. I wanted to make the connection between individual therapy and voice lessons and group therapy and the choral rehearsal. What is it about the choral organism that becomes a space that can be therapeutic? I found a lot of commonalities in group and individual counseling and what we do.”Dr. Sarah J. Episode 120: The Plan B Chronicles: Divorce, Defiance, Liberation I had Meredith as a guest here on the podcast last June, episode 113 Taylor Swift and the Divine Feminine. We have since gotten to know each other a little better and when I heard that she was promoting her new book, I wanted to support her in spreading the word. In The Plan B Chronicles: Divorce, Defiance, Liberation, psychotherapist Meredith Beardmore delivers a raw and compelling memoir chronicling her journey through betrayal, healing, and self-discovery. After discovering her husband's infidelity, Meredith's life spirals into chaos, challenging everything she thought she knew about love, trust, and personal strength. Drawing from her professional experience in therapy and somatic healing, Beardmore navigates the emotional wreckage while offering readers valuable insights and practical tools for overcoming similar challenges. Through her path of somatic therapy, spiritual awakening, and ultimately reclaiming her personal power, Meredith's memoir is a candid, inspiring account of how the darkest moments in life can lead to profound transformation. This book serves as both a healing guide and a story of empowerment, making it essential reading for modern women questioning their own relationships and seeking a way forward. I was happy to read a copy of her book last weekend- she is a great writer and storyteller and I loved the way she wove it all together… Nevermind the sprinkling in of messages from spirit and divine interventions along the way! Right up my alley! She did a beautiful job of making magic from her hardship and in turn will help loads of others who are on a similar journey. Meredith Beardmore is a licensed psychotherapist, author, and the creator of the YouTube channel Mend with Mere. Her second book, The Plan B Chronicles: Divorce. Defiance. Liberation., is a fierce and funny collection of essays about heartbreak, single motherhood, and rewriting your future when life blows up the blueprint. She's also the author of Hey Addiction, Thanks for Nothing: A Brutally Honest Guide to Loving an Addict Without Losing Your Mind, inspired by her years of supporting families of addicts—both professionally and personally. Meredith holds a master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from The Ohio State University and integrates ACT, CBT, mindfulness, and expressive arts into her therapeutic work. Her writing has appeared in The Huffington Post, Buzzfeed, and Colman McCarthy's Teaching Peace. She lives in Columbus, Ohio, with her son, Jules, and their dog, Reese To learn more about me (Karen) and the work that I do, go to rebalancewithreiki.com - if you are local to Northern NJ and you'd like to check out my store front you can visit my page moonmagicwellness.com. Today, Emily Kircher-Morris welcomes Natalia Aíza, a therapist and advocate, to talk about the complexities of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). They debunk common myths and misconceptions, and talk about what OCD actually is. It's important to understand the OCD cycle, be able to identify the various types of OCD, and understand how it often coexists with other neurodivergent conditions like ADHD and autism. They also talk about the impact of reassurance seeking, the nuances of Just Right OCD, and the challenges of school refusal. The conversation includes insights into how parents and therapists can better support individuals with OCD, and help them on the journey towards a better life. TAKEAWAYS OCD is often misunderstood, with many believing it only relates to cleanliness. The OCD cycle involves triggers, obsessions, and compulsions that reinforce fears. Moral scrupulosity and harm OCD are common types that are often overlooked. OCD is distinct from generalized anxiety. ADHD and OCD can coexist, leading to unique challenges in diagnosis and treatment. Autism can complicate the presentation of OCD, requiring specialized understanding. Reassurance seeking can inadvertently reinforce OCD behaviors. Just Right OCD reflects a perfectionism that can manifest in various aspects of life. School refusal can be a manifestation of OCD, leading to avoidance patterns. James Willhite is an experiential therapist, coach, and consultant. He previously worked for 20 years in finance and sales management where he found a passion for speaking and coaching, then decided to switch careers and earned a Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Lamar University. With Steven Shields he co-founded Accepted, a collection of exclusively trained experiential guide who lead individuals, families, groups, and corporations to maximize their health and connection. James also serves on the board of three non-profit organizations (Unashamed Unafraid, A Warrior Heart, and Heart of a Woman) and firmly believes that as we work to remove the obstacles and barriers of trauma, our true and divine identity will be uncovered at our core. He loves spending time with his wife, Kristy and with his four children. Links AcceptedLife.com Share your thoughts in the Leading Saints community Read the transcript of this podcast Get 14-day access to the Core Leader Library Highlights James talks about the complexities of shame, particularly in the context of spirituality and personal growth. Wilhite addresses issues like anxiety, depression, addiction, and trauma in his practice. He highlights the subtle yet pervasive nature of shame, often overlooked in therapeutic settings, and how it can lead individuals to hide from God and themselves. The discussion delves into the biblical story of Adam and Eve, exploring how shame was introduced into the human experience and how it continues to affect individuals today. Wilhite explains that shame is a primary weapon used by the adversary to create distance between individuals and God, leading to feelings of inadequacy and the need to seek validation from others rather than from the divine. He emphasizes the importance of recognizing and naming shame to break free from its grip, encouraging listeners to understand their true identity as children of God. Throughout the episode, Wilhite offers practical advice for church leaders and individuals alike, urging them to embrace the inevitability of pain, work, and uncertainty in life as opportunities for growth rather than as punishments. He underscores the significance of leaning into God's goodness and trusting in His promises, even amidst struggles. The conversation culminates in a powerful reminder that healing is possible through understanding one's identity and the nature of God, ultimately inviting listeners to embark on their own "shame adventure" to foster healing and connection. 03:30 - Understanding Shame in Therapy 04:50 - Common Issues in Therapy Post-COVID 06:30 - The Role of Trauma in Therapy 08:00 - Experiential Therapy vs. Talk Therapy 09:30 - Importance of Finding the Right Therapist 10:50 - The Adam and Eve Story and Shame 12:30 - The Subtlety of Shame 14:00 - Hiding from God and Its Consequences 16:30 - The Cycle of Perfectionism and Shame 18:00 - Recognizing Shame in Leadership 19:30 - God's Nature and Our Identity 21:00 - The Importance of Self-Compassion 22:30 - The Journey of Healing from Shame 24:00 - God's Response to Adam and Eve 26:00 - Misinterpretation of God's Blessings 28:00 - Embracing Pain and Work as Inevitable 30:00 - Trusting God Amidst Uncertainty 32:00 - The Role of Pain in Growth 34:00 - Feeling to Heal: The Process of Therapy 36:00 - Allowing Ourselves to Feel Emotions 38:00 - Conclusion and Final Thoughts on Healing The award-winning Leading Saints Podcast is one of the top independent Latter-day Saints podcasts as part of nonprofit Leading Saints' mission to help Latter-day Saints be better prepared to lead.
