The teenage years can be tough for ALL involved. The child, the parent – the moments of frustration when trying to communicate with them and champion them, but seeing no result can feel almost too much to take sometimes! Well, when Landyn stumbled upon a TikTok video that her friend Mary Jo sent her with the message ‘I think this is what our teenagers are trying to tell us' - Landyn's ears perked up. The man in the video was Jordan Toma. Jordan is a financial advisor turned speaker/coach from New Jersey that was diagnosed with ADHD, Dyslexia, and Auditory Processing Disorder. He struggled most of his younger years from a behavioral and educational perspective - until he was given the gift of an IEP - Individualized Education Plan. Being able to understand how to turn his struggles into his strengths changed his entire life. Jordan's mission is to be the person he needed during those developmental years. And now he's here to help you and your child, too. In this episode, Jordan is laying out: What an IEP is and how to access this for your child The words your child is longing to hear from you as the parent What to do if you and your spouse aren't on the same page on what's best for your child Resources available to your child from elementary to highschool if they aren't fulfilling their highest potential Encouragement for your parent heart to keep going Let this episode be your reminder that you're doing the best you can – and to trust your gut. Before I get into these amazing tips and stories from parents and parent-friendly professionals alike, we need to back up a sec. We need to talk about how the IEP (Individualized Education Plan) came to be and why it's the best vehicle to advocate for your child with a disability. We need to go over what IDEA is and what the intention was, the update in 2004 and how it raised the inclusion bar, and why it's the best way to advocate from a legal and timing perspective!

“I meant to tell you it’s not Global Delay anymore. It’s now a diagnosis of Intellectual Disability,” I said to the nurse as she was presenting her portion of the IEP (Individualized Education Plan) for my son. She quickly questioned, “who gave you that diagnosis?” To which I replied, “he just had some testing done through developmental at (the hospital), and he was given that when they reevaluated his autism diagnosis.” She looked at me through the zoom meeting asking,
FabuRocks was created and inspired by our daughter FABU to help her with speech delay, learning disabilities, and ADHD at home. At the age of 4, FABU was diagnosed with speech delay and immediately started going to speech therapy twice a week. After 2 years and minimal improvements, FABU was in 1st grade and testing 3-grade levels below in speech and reading. By 2nd grade, FABU showed ADHD and learning disabilities symptoms such as dyslexia and language processing issues. An IEP (Individualized Education Plan) was developed to help meet her needs and goals at school. We decided to take matters into our own hands as we faced our biggest fear: FABU in 1st grade, with a considerable delay in communication, knowing that this could lead to or trigger further mental health issues later in life we wanted to avoid. This led us to use gaming, unboxing videos, and live streaming as the main therapeutic tool that produced quicker and more significant improvement than we ever imagined. Now that FABU is older, she is no longer embarrassed for us, as a family, to openly discuss the obstacles she faces daily. After seeing her significant improvement over the years, she now understands the importance of being verbal about her disabilities, what we do and how we do it to empower others like her. Currently, FABU is in 6th grade and testing at grade level in reading and vocabulary and getting A's and B's in all her classes. She's social, outspoken, frequently participates in class, and is passionate about Math and literature. FABU's accomplishments as a content creator are many, from being the youngest YouTube Gaming Partner at the age of 7 to currently being the Youngest FaceBook Gaming partner and sponsored by several of the biggest name brands in gaming such as Turtle Beach, ROCCAT, and G-Fuel. She's the founder and leader of the FabuArmy, a clan that empowers and supports young content creators like herself. This is why we have decided to create a Podcast, and our goals are to educate parents, create awareness, and for FABU's voice to be heard as we share our story, how we got here, and where we are headed. We will openly discuss our experiences, methods, techniques, what has worked, what has NOT worked, our frustrations, how we overcome our challenges, and our plans. We invite you to join us on our daily journey via our YouTube channel, where we post a new video daily, our Twitter updates, our Instagram posts, our website event news, our Discord community, during our FaceBook Gaming live streams, and via our weekly Podcast.

Dr. Greene answered some interesting questions today (don't forget, you can ask questions between programs by emailing Dr. Greene through the contact form at www.livesinthebalance.org). The first email was from a mom trying to have some input into her daughter's IEP (Individualized Education Plan) at school...she was wondering if she had the "right" to have input and, if so, how to do it in a way that didn't alienate the folks at school. The second question was from a mom who'd seen Dr. Greene speak recently and was trying Plan B at home. This mom was already beginning to recognize times when she was slipping into Plan A ("catching" oneself using Plan A is a very positive early indicator of success with the CPS model), and her first attempts at Plan B needed just a little fine-tuning. The key ingredient, of course, is persistence. Another very informative program...listen to it whenever you like!
