While we focus on K-12 education at the Arizona K12 Center, today on 3Ps in a Pod, we're talking about a particular pathway for high school graduates. Today, Amanda Schmidt, a senior development director with NAU Advancement, joins us to talk about ways to remove or lower barriers to post-secondary education and how, as a community, we can all participate in helping others achieve success by lowering financial barriers. Amanda shares about why she encourages students to lead with curiosity when considering post-secondary possibilities and the importance of reaching out to find out what support may exist. There are many avenues available to support students as they attempt to navigate funding and potential gaps in their funding. Amanda offers several suggestions for how students can fill these gaps while pursuing opportunities. As students are investigating what they may want to pursue post-secondary, Amanda suggests starting by being radically honest about what brings you joy and what ignites your passion. She also encourages potential students or program participants to explore the supports that may exist at the place or program you are exploring and ensure they also align with your values. On this podcast, listeners will learn more about the various arms of support designed to assist students pursuing a college or university path. Amanda explains how completing the FAFSA can be a way of sourcing needs-based funds but should also be a point of asking further questions. Amanda and 3Ps host Juliana Urtubey, NBCT, also explore how we can be a part of the community that helps move future generations of students forward and what large impacts that community generosity can have on students. If you've got a kid in post-secondary or are a student there yourself, what are the implications of this perfect storm? David Agnew, who's been president of Seneca Polytechnic since 2009, joins Steve Paikin to discuss. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Mike Palmer speaks with Colleen Keating-Crawford and Elisabeth Booze from Teach for America's Reinvention Lab about their study, "Crossing the Canyon: Ethnographic Findings About Life After High School." We explore youth perceptions of life after high school, discussing the pressure to attend four-year colleges and the growing skepticism about higher education. The conversation introduces a framework for understanding different types of support organizations can provide to youth, categorized as trail guides, transport helicopters, bridge builders, and mapmakers. Key takeaways: Youth are critically examining institutions and seeking authenticity in their post-high school journeys. There's a need for a more cohesive ecosystem of support for young people transitioning to adulthood. Organizations can use the presented framework to assess and improve their support for youth in local contexts. We encourage listeners to check out the full "Crossing the Canyon" report and subscribe to Trending in Education wherever you get your podcasts. Visit us at TrendinginEd.com for more.

Richard Kincaid, the State Director of Career and Technical Education for the District of Columbia, shares his journey to becoming a passionate advocate for educational equity and opportunity. His career spans over two decades, during which he has dedicated himself to building systems that drive meaningful impact in K-12 public schools, government, and educational non-profits. Lauren starts by asking why Vanessa dropped out of college. It turns out, she'd be considering it for a year, but she felt she wasn't learning anything she couldn't learn in the real world. Vanessa's father had asked her to join his real estate business, and she'd finally made the decision to follow in his footsteps. Vanessa then shares her father's story, who invested in real estate on the side while he was a police officer. Eventually, he took that side business full time. Vanessa shares more about what the GW companies do. They buy apartment buildings, renovate them, then refinance aka the BRRRR method. They raise capital to allow others to invest in real estate passively. Then, the two transition to talking about what it's like to work with a family member. Naturally, Lauren asks about conflict resolution, and is pleased to find out that Vanessa calls her dad by his first name at work. Lauren clearly can't picture doing the same. Vanessa points out that she can ask all the dumb questions she wants. Looking forward, Lauren asks if Vanessa wants to have kids, and what the plan would be as far as them taking over the business. She's also curious about how Vanessa's boyfriend feels about her working with her dad. Vanessa also shares how the conversation went with her dad when she decided to leave school and come work for him. So, does she recommend working with your parents? Obviously, yes. If you liked this episode, you'll also like episode 160 Turning Real Estate into More Businesses, in which Josh tells us about he and his partner Antoinette's ventures.
