CW: This episode includes scenes that imply torture. If this would be triggering for you, please skip 22:20 to 22:44 and 40:26 to 40:30. Your safety and enjoyment are important to us. Zero makes their way down the dark strange hallway, grabbing a pebble and turning it into a little light as they do so. As they follow the hallway they find that there is strange tubing connected to the ceiling. Following the tubing they arrive at a room with strange machinery and wiring, and at the center is a reclining metal chair with a familiar person strapped to it. Cela, the spellweaver they met in Isha, has been questioned and tortured for information about Eight. They decide it is worth the risk of getting caught to free her.Meanwhile, Trix sleeps in their room and dreams of reliving the ritual. This time around, a mysterious voice and a disembodied mouth speak to them from the shadows. The voice and mouth are revealed to belong to Ikar, the goddess of truth. She offers Trix a choice, sharing that they have a mutual problem and she wants to assist them. They can learn how to help their friend or they can learn how to receive an advantage in the journey ahead. Trix makes their choice, and awakens with the knowledge they dreamed of. Follow Dax @gmdax, Kappa @TheKappaChris, Sebastian @sebastianyue and Wren @ThornyDryad EPISODE CREDITS: Produced by DaxOpening theme music, editing and mixing by WrenLogo Artwork design by JessieCharacter Artwork design by RiyuskiSegment music and sound effects licensed through Epidemic SoundLINKS:Be sure to follow and tag Roads Uncharted on Bluesky!

Today, Michael speaks with Rabbi Sharon Brous. Sharon is the senior and founding rabbi of IKAR, a leading-edge Jewish community based in Los Angeles, and the author of The Amen Effect: Ancient Wisdom to Mend Our Broken Hearts and World, a national bestseller. She was named #1 on the Newsweek/The Daily Beast list of most influential Rabbis in America and has been recognized by The Forward and Jerusalem Post as among the most influential Jews alive today. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and The Washington Post, and her 2016 TED talk, “Reclaiming Religion,” has been viewed by more than 1.5 million people. Sharon is in the inaugural cohort of Auburn Seminary's Senior Fellows program, which unites top faith leaders working on the frontlines for justice, she sits on the faculty of REBOOT and serves on the International Council of the New Israel Fund, and the national steering committee for the Poor People's Campaign. Highlights from Michael's and Sharon's insightful conversation include:  -Sharon's spiritual awakening and a deep dive into her seminary journey, her love for Talmudic texts, and the realization that her feminist, activist voice was missing from the tradition, and needed to be included -The deep spiritual yearning among disaffected Jews and the need for a new, imaginative religious expression that is both prophetic and rooted in justice -The criticism and threats Sharon received for calling people to compassion, and the spiritual imperative to resist polarization by turning toward, not away from, each other -Poignant stories from Sharon's community and life, including a powerful lesson from her mentor that taught her the sacred responsibility of simply showing up -Themes from Sharon's celebrated sermon, The Amen Effect, and how it turned into a national best-selling book -The link between social disconnection and the rise of tyranny, and a story of how an ideological conflict helped catalyze a life-changing shift in someone -The “18 minutes of joy” practice from Sharon's grieving friend, redefining joy as a form of resistance and spiritual resilience, and so much more! Finally, Michael leads a guided meditation on expanding love from a personal to global scale, culminating in gratitude, spaciousness, and divine compassion.  Learn more about IKAR and Sharon's work at https://ikar.org/ and on social media. Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
The Beracha Over Cereal with Milk, and Yogurt with Fruit

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 30, 2024

If a person eats cereal with milk, the cereal constitutes the "Ikar" – the primary component of the mixture, whereas the milk is "Tafel" – secondary – as it is added merely to enhance the cereal. Therefore, one recites only one Beracha, over the cereal, and this covers both the cereal and the milk. Even if some milk remains in the bowl after one has eaten all the cereal, and one wishes to drink the milk, he does not recite a Beracha over the milk, since the milk had been covered by the Beracha recited over the cereal. If one adds fruit to yogurt, which is very common, then in most instances, the fruit would be considered secondary to the yogurt. Normally, one adds just a few pieces of fruit to enhance the yogurt's flavor, such that the yogurt is considered the primary component, and the fruit, the secondary component. As such, one would recite only "She'ha'kol" over the yogurt, and this Beracha would cover both the yogurt and the fruit. However, if somebody puts a large amount of fruit in the yogurt, such that he eats mainly fruit with some yogurt mixed in, then he would recite only a Beracha over the fruit, and this Beracha would also cover the yogurt. Summary: One who eats cereal with milk recites only a Beracha over the cereal, and this Beracha covers also the milk. Even if some milk is left over, he does not recite a Beracha over the leftover milk. If one adds some fruit to yogurt, he recites only "She'ha'kol" over the yogurt, and this Beracha covers also the fruit, unless he added so much fruit that he essentially eats fruit with some yogurt added, in which case he recites only a Beracha over the fruit, and this Beracha would also cover the yogurt.

Hope seems like a simple concept, but the feeling can be difficult to hold onto. And when times are difficult and chaos swirls around us, it's more important than ever. How do we find and practice hope when it's elusive? Spiritual and religious leaders rely on centuries of experience and wisdom to continually guide people back to hope, and this episode's discussion from the 2024 Aspen Ideas Festival draws from these experts. Lutheran pastor Nadia Bolz-Weber founded the House for All Sinners and Saints in Denver, and doesn't shy away from unorthodox methods of ministry. Rabbi Sharon Brous was on her way to lead her community, IKAR—a Jewish community she founded 20 years ago with a new vision of how faith can center and connect us—in the sacred ceremony of Tashlikh, when she stopped to buy index cards and sharpies. It was an unexpected stop, given the day's holiness: Every year between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the two holiest days of the year, the Jewish community visits a body of water to release their sins, or anything they don't want to carry into the new year, into the water. Still, Rabbi Brous was reflecting on the dying wishes of her dear friend and community member, Erin, and had a question for the community.  During her final days, Erin wrote that each of us has an innate sense of who we're called to be. Yet, despite that knowing, too often we construct reasons to delay fulfilling our calling. On the brink of her own tragic death, Erin asked—What if we don't have forever?—and urged her community to live urgently. When Rabbi Brous delivered her message to the IKAR community, overlooking the Pacific Ocean for Tashlikh, she asked: What are you waiting for? The question—What are you waiting for?—is the through-line of each topic we explore in this rich conversation about her book, The Amen Effect; From getting quiet enough to hear divine wisdom and cultivating our spiritual strength, to accompanying each other through joy and sorrow and, inspired by the Jewish ritual of being thankful for 100 blessings, creating our own system of blessings.  As you settle into this conversation, consider a yearning that exists deep within your heart. What are you waiting for to pursue it? What is one step you might take to move towards it today?

This is a conversation about the relationship between Jewishness and the Jewish State. About believing some aspects of Israel have become indefensible and also believing that Israel itself must be defended. About what it means when a religion built on the lessons of exile creates a state that inflicts exile on others. About the ugly, recurrent reality of antisemitism. You know, the easy stuff. In these past few months, I've been moved by the sermons of Rabbi Sharon Brous, which have managed to hold these paradoxes with more grace and prophetic wisdom than most. Brous is the founding and senior rabbi of IKAR, a Jewish community based in Los Angeles, and the author of the forthcoming book “The Amen Effect: Ancient Wisdom to Mend Our Broken Hearts and World.” And so I asked her to be on the show to talk about things that are deeply uncomfortable to talk about. We discuss the “great dream” that Israel represents for generations of Jews; Brous's Yom Kippur sermon reckoning with the moral cost of Israel's decades-long occupation and its increasingly right-wing government; the “existential loneliness” she and many in her community felt on Oct. 7; the antisemitism she witnessed in the wake of Oct. 7; how experiences of exile throughout history have shaped the Jewish psyche and speak to us now; stories from her visit with residents of the Kfar Aza kibbutz as they mourned their dead; why “bearing sacred witness” is a core spiritual commitment; and more.Mentioned:“This Is the Moral Earthquake” by Rabbi Sharon Brous (sermon delieverd on Sep. 25, 2023)“We've Lost So Much.
