Memoirs from authors Glory Edim and Moshe Kasher narrate their lives through cultural objects: books and subcultures. First, Edim, the founder of the Well-Read Black Girl book club, grew up as the child of Nigerian immigrant parents searching for their way into American identity. As part of that journey, Edim found herself through reading. Her memoir, Gather Me, is a coming-of-age story told through her encounters with books. In today's episode, Edim speaks with NPR's Michel Martin about the early influence of stories such as Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, reading as an act of defiance, and a trove of letters that helped the author reconnect with her father. We then hear from comedian Moshe Kasher, whose memoir Subculture Vulture is organized around six scenes he's inhabited throughout his life. After deciding to get sober, Kasher accessed community and recovery in expected and unexpected places, from Alcoholics Anonymous to the rave scene. In today's episode, he joins NPR's Rachel Martin to discuss healing core wounds, the relationship between Burning Man and the Jewish Days of Awe, and the responsibility of being a comedian today. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Interview by Angela CroudaceTim Kasher, the visionary frontman of Omaha-based band Cursive, delved into the creative journey behind their tenth album, Devourer. "We're pretty stoked on it," Kasher remarked, reflecting on the extensive work that went into this release following a four-year hiatus since their last album in 2019.Kasher described the album as a significant departure from the band's previous two releases, Vitriola and Get Fixed, which he labelled as "more angsty" and "less melodic." He elaborated, "We took a moment during the pandemic to reassess our catalogue. I wanted Devourer to be a more eclectic record." This desire for variety is evident in the album, which captures the essence of Cursive's roots while pushing new boundaries. One of the standout tracks from the album, Bloodbath, has been brought to life through a unique music video featuring Shannon Purser from Stranger Things and Aurora Perrineau from Westworld. Kasher explained the collaborative nature of the project: "We didn't give the directors any parameters. We said, 'This is the budget, and we want to see your vision.'" This approach resulted in an imaginative interpretation that blends elements of a "female fight club" with the emotional depth typical of Cursive's work.Drawing on his influences, Kasher cited authors like Cormac McCarthy and Stephen King, whose dark themes resonate with the band's music. "Cormac McCarthy has this extremely realistic take on humanity," he shared. "I think Stephen King is influential for everyone in some way. He's like the Edgar Allan Poe of our generation."As the band gears up for their upcoming tour, Kasher expressed enthusiasm for performing live, especially with the added challenge of recreating complex arrangements from the album. "We have two drummers on Devourer, and we're attempting to bring that energy to the stage," he noted.Kasher's passion for music and connection with fans was palpable as he reflected on the live experience. "It's important to remember that for the audience, this may be the first time they're hearing these songs. We owe it to them to give our all," he emphasized. This dedication has earned Cursive a reputation for electrifying performances, with fans often remarking that each show feels unique. Finally, he touched on the legacy of the 2003 album, The Ugly Organ, acknowledging its profound impact on listeners. "We didn't expect anything from that record," he said, "The further out on a limb we went, the more people connected with it. It's a lesson in authenticity that I hope resonates with other artists."As Cursive embarks on this new chapter with Devourer, Kasher's reflections on the past and present underscore the band's commitment to exploring new musical landscapes while remaining true to their roots.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

As a kid, Moshe Kasher (Subculture Vulture, The Endless Honeymoon Podcast, Kasher in the Rye: The True Tale of a White Boy From Oakland Who Became a Drug Addict, Criminal, Mental Patient, and Then Turned 16) led a double life. Most of the year he lived with his deaf single mother in Oakland, Calif., eating carob chips and other classic hippie foods, and in the summers he stayed with his deaf father, a born-again Hasidic Jew in Brooklyn who ate a strict kosher diet.   Moshe loves to rank things. In this episode, he ranks the world's worst desserts and the best way to drink a Diet Coke. So host Rachel Belle and producer Isaac Kaplan Woolner do a side-by-side taste test, sampling Coke in a glass bottle, a can, a plastic bottle, a fountain soda and from a bar gun before compiling their own rankings.   Are Tofutti Cuties Jewish? Daily Emunah Podcast - Daily Emunah By Rabbi David Ashear

With the proper emunah, a very challenging situation can become much easier to deal with. Hashem sends challenges for our benefit so that we could fulfill our missions in this world. But He also gave us the tools to understand what the challenges are all about so that we could overcome them with a good attitude. Just like Hashem decides if a person will merit to have a child, He also decides the exact makeup of every child that is born, its struggles and its deficiencies, and He puts each child in the exact families that the child needs to be in. Chazal tells us that Hashem partners with every set of parents in creating their children. He is actively putting every neshama exactly where it needs to be. A man related, when he discovered that his wife gave birth to a special needs child, all of his excitement and joy turned into sadness. He thought of all the challenges ahead of him and was not happy to take them on. He thought about all the shame this was going to cause him amongst his relatives and peers, and it bothered him a great deal. He went to his rabbi asking for chizuk . The rabbi told him about a time when someone went to Rav Yechezkel Levenstein for chizuk in this same area. The rabbi told him, “if you would really know how good this was for you to have this child in your family, you would go out into the streets and dance from being overcome with joy.” Somebody else in the same situation once went to Rabbi Yitzchak Zilberstein shlita and asked him, “What does Hashem want me to correct?” The rabbi replied, “Correct? It's a tremendous zechut to receive a child like this. You don't need to ask what you should correct.” Rabbi Zilberstein proceeded to tell him that special needs children have the neshamot of the greatest tzaddikim from previous generations who have come back down into this world to fix small blemishes that they had. In the neighborhood of the Maharal lived an eight-year-old boy who was a deaf-mute. One day a chicken was brought to the Maharal to rule on because it had a blemish that made it a doubtful terefa . The Maharal called for this boy to come. He put the chicken in front of the boy and told him to make a ruling. For the first time in this boy's life he opened his mouth and spoke. He said, “Kasher.” And shortly afterward he passed away. The Maharal said he knew for a fact, this boy was the neshama of a certain Gadol who was always careful in issuing his rulings to people. However, one Friday afternoon he was in a rush and a chicken was brought to him to make a ruling upon. In his haste he ruled the chicken taref, wrongfully so, causing that family not to have their chicken that Shabbat. He needed to come back and rule on the very same blemish and this time he needed to rule correctly. He begged in Shamayim to come back as a special needs child so he wouldn't have a chance to make additional averot . The moment he made his tikun he was allowed into the highest places in Gan Eden . The rabbi proceeded to give his student more chizuk . He said to him, “You only feel embarrassed because you think that this is your child. Imagine you were asked to raise someone else's child with the same issue. Not only wouldn't it be embarrassing, you would receive the greatest honor for it. People would be in awe of you taking on such a big responsibility. And imagine that the one asking you to do it was the Gadol HaDor and imagine it was the Gadol HaDor's son. It would be even more honorable to you. Let me share with you a secret. What you got is even more honorable than that. HaKadosh Baruch Hu, in all of His glory, is the One asking you to raise this child. It's His child and He's asking you for this favor, and if you do it, He is trustworthy to pay you the greatest rewards for it.” After this talk, the young father looked at his challenge in a whole new light. He received so much strength and his excitement and joy for the child was restored. Emunah can help a person with every situation in life. Hashem gave us the tools to deal with all of the challenges that He sends.

The Making of Cursive's DOMESTICA - featuring Tim Kasher

Life of the Record

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 12, 2023 80:34

In celebration of the deluxe edition of Cursive's DOMESTICA, we take an in-depth look at how the record was made. Following the breakup of the Omaha band, Slowdown Virginia, Tim Kasher reunited with his former bandmates, Matt Maginn and Stephen Pedersen, to start a new project called Cursive. They brought in drummer Clint Schnase and released their first 7 inch on their friends' label, Lumberjack Records, which later became Saddle Creek. Two full-length records followed, but when THE STORMS OF EARLY SUMMER was released in 1998, the band had already called it quits. Kasher had gotten married and moved to Portland, Oregon for a fresh start. As his marriage fell apart, he returned to Omaha and decided to reform Cursive. Pedersen had left for college at this point so Ted Stevens of Lullaby for the Working Class took over on guitar. Feeling like they had to make up for lost time, Cursive quickly put together an album's worth of songs and entered the home studio of A.J. and Mike Mogis to record the album over nine days. In this episode, Tim Kasher describes his vision of a concept album about a failed relationship that took inspiration from his recent divorce. With songs written from the perspective of both the male and female characters in the relationship, Kasher was writing in a fictional style but couldn't help but include elements from his own life. When the album was released in 2000, Saddle Creek wrote a bio mentioning Kasher's divorce that impacted the overall perception of the album, which Kasher still maintains is not a “divorce record.” From an attempt at being evenhanded in the storytelling to the Mogis brothers production skills to taking inspiration from the films, Eraserhead and Rosemary's Baby, to a lifelong journey of understanding metal to fans asking Kasher for relationship advice, we'll hear the stories around how the album came together.
