Today's daf is sponsored by Binyamin Cohen to wish Mazel tov to Caroline Musin Berkowitz on completing Shas! "We're inspired by your amazing accomplishment and dedication to learning." What categories of items are excluded from oaths of the shomrim? How is this derived from the Torah? What is the argument between Rabbi Meir and the rabbis in the Mishna regarding items that are or are not considered like land (to be exempt from oaths)? Another criterion for oaths is that the claim must be for a measured item. Rava and Abaye disagree about how to understand this. The Mishna lists several cases regarding a disagreement between the creditor and debtor about the value of an item given as collateral that the creditor claims was lost. In which cases would one side, or perhaps both, need to take an oath? If one loans money with collateral and the item gets lost, what type of responsibility does the creditor assume for the item? What if the creditor and debtor disagree regarding the value of the lost item? Shmuel holds that the creditor no longer owes any money even if the item is worth significantly less than the loan. How does his opinion work with the Mishna?

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Political correspondent Sam Sokol and archaeology reporter Rossella Tercatin join host Jessica Steinberg for today's episode. As Shas party leader Aryeh Deri threatens to leave the coalition, Sokol discusses the pressure being placed on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by the ultra-Orthodox parties to wrangle Likud lawmaker Yuli Edelstein and the law he is writing regarding Haredi army enlistment. There is intense anger in the ultra-Orthodox world over the issue, says Sokol, who also notes an act of arson in a Shas synagogue in Sunday, as the Shas party announced its intention to leave the coalition over its anger with Netanyahu regarding the Haredi draft bill. Sokol notes that a political insider told him there's a relatively low chance of these pressures leading to new elections. Even if the current coalition is dissolved, there would still be up to five months of its ability to continue functioning and for the coalition parties to buy more time for themselves. Tercatin discusses two sets of findings, one regarding the Bible. A pioneering new algorithm looks at the layers of oral traditions and writers of the Bible and its editors. The algorithm helps discern which words are used most often and the writing style, creating new methods of analyzing ancient writings and answering questions about the history they present. She also looks at a radiocarbon dating study that was used to examine one of the Dead Sea scrolls, helping futher determine the timeframe when it was written, and whether the current scrolls are first copies or early editions. The struggles we face in trying to keep the Torah and mitzvot are incredibly precious to Hashem. In fact, they are the very reason we were placed in this world. When we have to struggle to do what's right, the mitzvah we perform becomes infinitely more meaningful. At times, we might wonder, "Doesn't Hashem want me to do this? So why is it so hard?" The answer is that of courseHashem wants us to do His will, and He often makes it challenging so that we can earn even greater reward through our effort. These difficulties are not obstacles; they are expressions of Hashem's love. When we view our tests this way, it becomes easier to rise above them. One woman, who had grown tremendously along with her husband and children, was preparing for her firstborn son's bar mitzvah. The family she is raising looks very different from the families she and her husband came from. She always tries to please everyone, so the pressure of making the event work for all sides weighed heavily on her. She prayed to Hashem to give her the strength to do what she knew was right — and to do it with joy. That morning, her young daughter had a school play. Her role was to be a bat kol , a heavenly voice, and she repeated the same phrase over and over: Stay strong. It's just a test. Do what's right. Hashem will be proud of you. Sitting in the audience, the woman was moved to tears. Those words felt like they were coming directly from Hashem. They gave her the strength and clarity she needed, and that night she celebrated the bar mitzvah in the way she believed would truly make Hashem proud. When a person sacrifices so much to fulfill a mitzvah, then when something unpredictable happens, Hashem often sends hidden help to ensure they succeed. A rabbi in Israel gives a daily Daf Yomi class with nearly 30 participants. He is extremely careful never to miss a session — they learn even during the most challenging times of the year. When he travels, he always arranges a substitute well in advance. Recently, on Shabbat Parashiyot Tazria/Metzora, he had to be out of town for a simchah and arranged a replacement. On Sunday morning, he asked the substitute how the class went. The man admitted — to the rabbi's shock — that he had prepared but completely forgot to show up. Worried, the rabbi asked one of the regular participants what happened. The man said they waited a long time for the replacement, and then a rabbi who teaches alef-bet in the local yeshiva walked in. They joked, "Here's the rabbi who'll give today's daf!" The alef-bet teacher asked which daf they were up to, and they told him: the first page of Masechet Shevuot. He sat down and proceeded to teach the entire daf — completely by heart. The group was astonished. The teacher explained that this was the only daf in all of Shas he had memorized — he had reviewed it 30 times. Out of more than 2,700 pages, this was the only one he could have taught without preparation. The Rabbi who leads this daff shiur is so careful to never miss. When an unexpected obstacle arose Hashem gave heavenly assistance. He prepared the perfect substitute in advance, ensuring the shiur would not be missed. Another woman had taken on the commitment of reciting Nishmat for 40 days, always at the same time so she wouldn't forget. One day, she had time off and went on a family trip. Before leaving, she grabbed a siddur — just in case someone might need it to say Birkat Hamazon . Later, when her alarm reminded her to say Nishmat , she panicked — she didn't have the specific booklet she usually used to say Nishmat with. Then she remembered: she had brought the siddur. It became clear that Hashem had orchestrated her grabbing that siddur so she wouldn't miss a day of her commitment. The challenges we face in doing mitzvot are meant to elevate us. And sometimes, when the situation is beyond our control, Hashem sends His help — if we've done our best to uphold our part. When we show dedication and care, Hashem responds in kind, guiding and supporting us in ways we might never expect.

The coalition's ultra-Orthodox parties, United Torah Judaism and Shas, announced they will join the opposition to vote in favor of dissolving the Knesset due to its failure to pass a law exempting the ultra-orthodox from serving in the IDF. If a simple majority votes in favor of dissolving the Knesset, it would force parliamentary elections. As if the news pouring out of Israel wasn't enough, major developments are also taking place in Gaza. The food-aid program, run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, is showing signs of success in circumventing Hamas, weakening its political power of Gaza's population. This food aid program is not just a humanitarian endeavor; it is part of a larger strategy that was developed over the past year, referred to as humanitarian bubbles, in which Hamas-free zones are intended to be administered by vetted local Palestinians unaffiliated with Hamas. Prime Minister Netanyahu confirmed today that Israel is providing weapons to an anti-Hamas militia, led by Yasser Abu-Shabab. The rise of Israel-backed Abu-Shabab, along with the weakening of Hamas' political and military power, has prompted a conversation about whether we are witnessing the early stages of the day after Hamas in Gaza. Our guest today is Joseph Braude. He leads the Center for Peace Communications (CPC), a nonprofit that amplifies Gazans who oppose Hamas, and has been active inside the Gaza Strip throughout the war. If you've seen a video of Gazans speaking out against Hamas, chances are they came to you through the CPC.It is the first time we will be speaking with someone who has been in close contact with direct sources inside Gaza's population. In fact, Joseph has helped us receive audio to questions that the Call me Back podcast sent directly to Gazan civilians. Din & Daf: Conceptual Analysis of Halakha Through Case Study with Dr. Elana Stein HainIn various places in Shas, there is a difference in the sentencing based on whether a Jew killed a fellow Jew or a non-Jew. However, both are strictly prohibited as murder according to Jewish law. This week's shiur will focus on a contemporary teshuva from Rav Yehuda Amital z"l dealing with this important issue in the aftermath of the Sabra/Shatila massacre in 1982.Shevuot 34aDr. Elana Stein Hain – dinanddaf@hadran.org.ilFor more Din and Daf: https://hadran.org.il/channel/din-daf/

Today's daf is sponsored by Abby Sosland in loving memory of Rabbi Henry Sosland. "He taught us that daily learning could be the ultimate source of comfort and sipuk nefesh." Today’s daf is sponsored by the Hadran Women of Long Island in honor of our friend and co-learner, Bracha Rutner, whose completion of Masechet Sanhedrin marks her siyum on all of Shas. "You dedicated the last seven and one-half years to this monumental achievement, and we are so proud that you are one of our group, and that we are able to share in your simcha! לכי מחיל אל חיל." Korach's wife convinced him to rebel against Moshe, despite Korach initially arguing against her persuasion. What were her specific complaints against Moshe and Aharon? Based on inferences from Bamidbar 16:14 and Tehillim 106:16, Rabbi Yochanan explains that they accused Moshe of engaging in relations with their wives. Moshe approached Datan and Aviram, seeking reconciliation. From this action, Reish Lakish teaches that one should actively work to resolve disputes. Different verses are brought to prove that anyone who challenges their teacher is considered as challenging God directly. There is a debate regarding Korach's fate: Was he swallowed by the earth or burned with the others who offered incense? This remains unresolved due to different interpretations of the verses. However, the Torah clearly states that Korach's sons survived. Regarding the generation that wandered in the desert, sages debate whether they will have a share in the World-to-Come. Various verses are cited to support both positions. Similarly, the fate of the ten tribes is disputed. Will they eventually return to the land or were they permanently exiled? This discussion centers on different interpretations of Devarim 29:27. Scholars also debate whether these tribes will receive a portion in the World-to-Come, with various verses brought as evidence. In both these controversies, Rabbi Akiva takes the stricter position that they will neither return nor have a share in the World-to-Come. Rabba bar bar Hanna quotes Rabbi Yochanan questioning Rabbi Akiva's stance, noting that Rabbi Akiva typically adopts more lenient positions. What is the source for Rabbi Akiva's general tendency toward leniency? From what point in development can one merit entry to the World-to-Come: from conception, birth, the ability to speak, or the ability to say "amen"?

The Rebbe notes that religious kibbutzim in Eretz Yisrael plan to fully observe Shemitah. He inquires about recent rainfall's impact on crops. On delaying a bris for a larger gathering, he weighs zerizim makdimin against the mitzvah's joy, allowing the custom. He prioritizes dividing Shas, as emphasized by the Alter Rebbe, over Mishnayos. https://www.torahrecordings.com/rebbe/004_igros_kodesh/shevat/896
The Rebbe urges participation in the communal study of Shas for the Alter Rebbe's yahrzeit, highlighting its spiritual benefits. He encourages continued efforts in supporting Jewish life abroad and reassures a correspondent, emphasizing trust in divine providence. https://www.torahrecordings.com/rebbe/004_igros_kodesh/teves/869
The Rebbe highlights the significance of the first twelve months after the histalkus of the Previous Rebbe as a special time to strengthen one's connection to him. He encourages participation in the communal study of Shas, a practice the Previous Rebbe strongly promoted, as a means of deepening this bond and continuing in his path. https://www.torahrecordings.com/rebbe/004_igros_kodesh/teves/868

We find both of these in the Rambam's Mishneh Torah as well: (a) The name of the sefer is “Mishneh Torah,” and it also begins with the verse “Meshoch chasdecha…”, while it concludes with “kamayim layam mechasim.” (b) The end of the sefer, “The entire world will be occupied solely with the knowledge of Hashem…they will attain knowledge of their Creator… the earth will be filled with the knowledge of Hashem, etc.,” parallels the beginning – “To know that there is a Primary Being” upon which all of existence depends etc. (2) On the verse, “I will remove illness from your midst,” the Gemara explains that “Illness refers to bile. And why is it called illness (machalah)? Because [bile] contains eighty-three illnesses; which is the Gematria of machalah (83), and all of them are negated by bread in the morning and a flask of water.” This is the allusion in the 83 sets of halachos in Rambam: Studying the halachos of the Torah – which is the sustenance of the soul – as set forth in the 83 sets of Halachos in Rambam, brings healing through the Torah, in such a way that “I will not place it upon you to begin with.”Excerpt from sichah of Motzei Zos Chanukah 5746 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=28-02-2025 לע"נ ר' ארי׳ ליב אברהם יעקב בן יוסף ע"ה שיינער ליום היארצייט שלו א' אדר (שני). ת.נ.צ.ב.ה.

Someone whose Talmudic commentary has completely dominated Torah study for four centuries, Rav Shmuel Eliezer Aidel's (circa 1555-1631), better known as the Maharsha, emerged as a leading rabbinical figure and teacher during the golden age of Polish Jewry in the late 16th & early 17th centuries. Financially supported by his mother in law Aidel for many years, the Maharsha was able to both teach Torah to his students, as well as author his all-encompassing commentary to both the the Halachic as well as Aggadic passages of the entire Shas. Following his mother in law's passing, he assumed several successive rabbinical positions, before finally settling in the prominent community of Ostroh, where he remained until his passing. There he opened a yeshiva, and served the needs of the community. He also served in a broader leadership capacity within the autonomous governing council known as the Vaad Ha'arbah Aratzos – the Council of the Four Lands, recognized by the government in the old Polish Kingdom. The Maharsha's influence on Torah scholarship remains prominent until this very day. Today's daf is sponsored by Marc and Becki Goldstein. "In honor of our 50 years of Aliyah, our son Kobi bought and dedicated a bavli Shas to the Nezarim shul in Gaza." Today's daf is sponsored by Suri Davis in loving memory of her grandmother Esther bat Menachem Mendel. "Her husband, Chaim Davis, brought the first daf yomi shiur to the five towns in 1974." There are two opinions regarding the Torah's original script - was it initially written in ancient Hebrew characters and later changed to Ashurit (modern Hebrew script), or was it written in Ashurit from the beginning? Out of respect for the monarchy, one is prohibited from riding the king's horse, sitting on his throne, or using his scepter. Additionally, one must not view the king while he is getting a haircut or when he is naked or in the bathhouse. The text discusses Avishag the Shunamite, who served King David in his final years. Though he could have married her, he chose not to, as he already had eighteen wives. This teaches us about the gravity of divorce - rather than divorce one of his existing wives to marry Avishag, David was permitted to be secluded with her unmarried. This leads to a broader discussion about marital bonds, particularly the deep connection between spouses in their first marriage. Rabbi Yochanan compared the complexity of matchmaking to the splitting of the Red Sea. When confronted with a seemingly contradictory teaching from Rav - that forty days before a fetus's creation, a heavenly voice declares a child's future spouse, they resolve that Rabbi Yochanan was referring specifically to second marriages. Regarding grooming regulations: a king must have his hair cut daily, a kohen gadol weekly, and regular kohanim monthly. The source of these laws is discussed, along with the prohibition of wine for serving priests. There's a debate about these laws' current applicability: Rebbi maintains neither applies today, while the rabbis argue that the wine prohibition remains in effect, as the Temple might be rebuilt suddenly and intoxicated priests would be unfit for immediate service. The Gemara explores why they distinguish between the grooming and drinking regulations, offering two explanations, with the second raising an unresolved difficulty. Notably, these priestly regulations are derived from the prophet Yechezkel rather than the Torah, raising the question of how these laws were known before his time. The text concludes with a description of the kohen gadol's distinctive hairstyle.
Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Knesset reporter Sam Sokol joins host Jessica Steinberg on today's episode. Sokol reviews the Knesset on Monday, as hostage brother Danny Elgarat was thrown out of a committee meeting by committee chair Simcha Rothman after a disagreement with the brother of another hostage about the hostage deal under discussion. Sokol discusses the comments and images that Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich offered as he voiced his disapproval for the hostage deal, and his underlying threat to bolt the coalition if the government agrees to the deal, along with other Knesset members' recent remarks that this government may not last much longer. Smotrich's ultra-right ally, National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, then threatened ultra-Orthodox party Shas that he would not support their narrowed bill for community rabbis, calling Shas "a lapdog of the left," while Shas Knesset member Aryeh Deri retorted, by calling Ben Gvir "an inflated balloon." Sokol also mentions the statement made by Knesset member Gideon Sa'ar hinting that former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett is considering a return to politics. Steinberg talks about some recent projects for hostage families, the bereaved and survivors, including free tattoos for about 120 Israelis, and a hostage family project called "Week of Goodness."
