Mark Call – Torah Teaching for Parsha “Tazria”

Join Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa fellowship for a provocative two-part look at parsha Tazria, Leviticus chapters 12 through 14, and a discussion of what is too often dismissed as “old” testament minutia that no longer has any relevance. Mark suggests that one of the most intriguing things about certain sections — like this one! — is how things that the ‘church’ claims are irrelevant is how He may have Written it for us knowing far better. Just maybe. And the Erev Shabbat reading starts to make that case: https://hebrewnationonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/SSM-4-17-26-Tazria-teaching-podcast-xx.mp3 During the Sabbath Day midrash, Mark begins by asking some relevant questions, including, “what is UN-righteousness?” And what does this parsha tell us about it. And the answer follows from the observation that a person who was ‘declared’ unclean, by the cohenim, was put “outside the [clean, evidently!] camp” — until they were again declared clean. A look at the story of Miriam, and her “bad-mouthing” of Moses (in Hebrew, “lashon hora,” or the “evil tongue”) does at least begin to make the case that “gossip” or such damaging and contemptible speech, MIGHT be a cause of the ‘plague’ of tzaraat. And unlike ‘leprosy’ – there hasn’t been a single known case of tzaraat in the world for many centuries. But if “evil speech” can even remotely result in that ‘visual manifestation of a spiritual malady” – why, oh why, don’t we see it literally EVERYWHERE in a world today where the “Evil Tongue” gets you a network late night show? Did YHVH decide to stop the warning? As things get worse, and we enter into greater tribulation, wouldn’t an indicator of ‘wolves in sheep’s clothing’ be handy? Perhaps at least part of the problem is that when the whole word is ‘unclean’, there’s no point in kicking them out. Which seems to make the lesson all the more important. Tazria: “What is UN-righteousness?” https://hebrewnationonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/WT-CooH-4-18-26-Tazria-No-Tzaraat-for-centuries-so-What-is-Righteousness-podcast-xxx.mp3 Service information: Shabbat Shalom Mesa fellowship worship services and teachings are broadcast live every Sabbath, via Paltalk. In this installment of the Messianic Torah Observer, I reflect on Torah Reading Tazria–Metzorah (Leviticus 12:1–15:33), exploring the Torah's purity standards and how they point beyond the physical to enduring spiritual principles. Using the themes of childbirth, tzaraat ("leprosy"), and bodily flows, this teaching highlights how holiness is protected, how cleansing and restoration work, and how Yeshua refocuses defilement from external ritual concerns to the heart (Matthew 15:10–20). I close this episode with practical encouragement to pursue both physical stewardship and deeper spiritual cleanness as temples of Yehovah's presence. In this episode: Overview of Tazria–Metzorah and its three major sections (childbirth, tzaraat, bodily flows) Why purity standards matter: holiness, community, and access to Yehovah's presence Hygienic and ritual purposes: not mutually exclusive The priesthood's role: examining, diagnosing, declaring clean/unclean, mediating restoration Quarantine, "seventh day" separation, and "eighth day" restoration as a pattern of new beginnings Cleansing, atonement, and water immersion as recurring Torah themes How to apply "out-of-commission" Torah instructions today through spirit-and-truth principles Sin as the deeper parallel to impurity; protecting the set-apart community from "leaven" Yeshua's teaching: defilement proceeds from the heart (Matthew 15:10–20) Practical encouragement: maintain the body as a temple and pursue spiritual, emotional, mental cleanness Scripture references mentioned: Leviticus 12:1–8 (childbirth and purification) Leviticus 13:1–14:32 (tzaraat / "leprosy") Leviticus 15:1–33 (bodily flows) Exodus 19:5–6 (treasured possession; priestly kingdom; holy nation) Leviticus 19:2; 1 Peter 1:16 (be holy as He is holy) Isaiah 55:8 (His ways/thoughts above ours) Matthew 5:18; Matthew 5:20 (Torah enduring; righteousness) Matthew 6:33 (seek first the Kingdom) John 4:23–24 (worship in spirit and truth) 1 Corinthians 6:19 (body as temple) Hebrews 9 (Messiah's priestly work; atonement themes) 1 Corinthians 15:46 (natural first, then spiritual) 2 Timothy 3:16–17 (all Scripture profitable) Hebrews 12:1 (sin as weight; running the race) 1 Corinthians 5:6; Galatians 5:9 (leaven principle) Matthew 15:10–20 (what defiles a person) John 8:12; 1 John 1:7–9 (walk in the light; confession and cleansing) 2 Corinthians 5:21 (righteousness in Messiah) Reflection questions: Where do you most often treat "cleanness" as merely external rather than a heart issue? What patterns of separation and restoration ("seven" then "eight") do you see in your own walk? How can you pursue set-apartness in practical ways while keeping the focus on spiritual cleanness? Are there "leaven-like" compromises that need to be addressed for the health of your fellowship/community? What does it look like this week to walk in the light and practice confession and repentance?

Parshas Tazria & Metzora: Words Define Reality What if the words you speak don't just express reality… but actually create it? In Parshas Tazria & Metzora, the Torah introduces the laws of Tzara'as, a condition that appears physical but is rooted in something far deeper. Through Rashi and the Lubavitcher Rebbe, this episode uncovers a powerful truth: reality is not defined by what we see, but by what we say. From the spiritual impact of speech to the deeper meaning of Sefiras HaOmer and the month of Iyar, we explore how words shape relationships, identity, and the direction of our lives. Growth is not instant. It is built day by day, choice by choice, word by word. If you're looking to understand Jewish growth, personal development, and the power of speech in Torah, this episode will change the way you think, speak, and act. ✨ The life you live is shaped by the words you choose.

The Torah's most “uncomfortable” topics sometimes hold the cleanest guidance for real life, and Parsha Tazria Metzora is a prime example. We take the laws of zav and zava that many people write off as technical, squeamish, and ancient, and we show how they reveal a surprisingly modern spiritual psychology: when we repeatedly push past what we actually need, the damage doesn't stay hidden. It shows up in our habits, our headspace, and our sense of purity and focus. We walk through the Sefer HaChinuch's shoresh of the mitzvah, where the key word is “mostros” extras. Hashem pushes us toward holiness that is straight and sane, especially around basic human drives like eating and drinking. From there we bring in Ramchal's Mesilat Yesharim (chapter 13) and sharpen it into a daily decision filter: “Do I need this to be a healthy, happy Jew who can serve Hashem, or is it just indulgence?” That single question touches everything from food and comfort to lifestyle spending, shopping, and the endless pressure to upgrade. Then we add Rabbeinu Bachya on Vayetze and Yaakov's prayer for bread to eat and clothes to wear, framing davening itself as a practice in clarity. Ask for what you need, not for the extras that become worry, distraction, and spiritual clutter. If you've ever wondered how Torah, musar, and self-control connect to what you wear, what you buy, and how you live, this conversation makes it real. This week's reading is called Tazria and it covers Leviticus 12:1–15:33. This portion is completely occupied by issues of ritual impurity. Last week's reading, Shemini, was concerned with the structural boundaries between the sacred and the profane, as it pertained to the Tabernacle and priesthood. Tazria–Metzora shifts the lens toward the human body and the private experiences of the laypeople. It deals with the laws of ritual impurity arising from childbirth and every possible skin affliction. Where Shemini focuses on the physical structure of the sanctuary and the behavior of the priests, this portion focuses on the physical state of the common person. It addresses how natural life cycles and mysterious illnesses affect an individual's ability to participate in communal worship. The laws of ritual purity in Leviticus were the essential start of what would later become one of the most important sacraments of our faith. By understanding the origins of immersion in these chapters, we gain a deeper appreciation for baptism, recognizing it not as a new invention but as the beautiful fulfillment of a divine promise.Support the show

Tazria–Metsora explores tzara'at—often mistranslated as leprosy—not as a modern disease but as a Temple-era sign alerting Israel to a moral breach, most famously triggered by lashon hara: true information framed with a negative, manipulative slant rather than mere gossip. Jim Long and Rabbi Chaim Richman discuss the unprecedented and inimitable Biblical phenomena known as 'tzaraat' – a Divine wake-up call which, in reality, becomes a channel for Divine mercy and compassion, providing a wayward individual who alienated others, with the toolkit he needs to reintegrate himself as a responsible and caring member of society._________Rabbi Chaim Richman Jerusalem Lights | Torah for Everyone Join our new WhatsApp channel! https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VbDN...Rabbi Chaim Richman's 'Jerusalem Lights', a non-profit educational organization, shares the wisdom of Torah teachings with all sincere spiritual seekers, emphasizing the ennoblement of the human spirit, the brotherhood of mankind, and the nurturing and development of each individual's personal faith and relationship with the Creator. TAZRIA -METZORAThe Power of A Good WordA small but powerful step each of us can take is to stop the spread of this negativity. To challenge mistaken ideas-yes-but not to despair of the people who hold them, and not to define them with absolute, hopeless labels. Instead, we must find the way to highlight the potential within every Jew to return and to repair their actions.A fundamental question in the parshiyos of the week: Why does the metzora capture a bird from the wild in order to purify himself, only to then send it back into the wild? Either he should slaughter it, like its counterpart-or not capture it in the first place. The first parsha we read this Shabbos, Tazria, deals with the diagnosis of the affliction. A person who sees a leasion on his home, his garment, or his skin goes to the Kohen, who examines the affliction and places him in quarantine. The second parsha, Metzora, deals with the purification process. After the metzora repents and the affliction is removed, he must undergo a process of purification, followed by a seven-day waiting period, and then bring offerings as atonement for his sin.

A very large percentage of Torah is dedicated to the laws of purity and impurity. This week's double Parshas of Tazria and Metzora largely deal with these laws. One variant of impurity that is discussed in both parshas is that of a metzora, A metzora is someone who is stricken with the tangible illness of tzaraas caused by a variety of sins, most notably the sin of lashon hara, evil talk and slander. In Parshas Tazria we read about when it strikes a person's garment or body; and the bulk of Parshas Metzora orients around tzaraas remediation and a third type of tzaraas that afflicts the sinner's house.– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –DONATE: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php.
