According to a study by the University of Maryland, a cyber attack occurs every 39 seconds, resulting in an average of 2,244 daily attacks. Check Point research indicates that global cyber attacks increased by 30% in Q2 2024, reaching 1,636 weekly attacks per organization. Additionally, Cybersecurity Ventures predicts that cybercrime will cost the world $9.5 trillion USD in 2024. If cybercrime were treated as a country, it would represent the world's third-largest economy, following the U.S. and China. In the U.S., the situation is even more dire. Americans spend an average of seven hours and three minutes online each day, which adds up to over 18 years of their adult lives. Conversely, people in Japan spend the least time online daily, averaging three hours and 56 minutes, while those in South Africa spend the most at nine hours and 24 minutes. On Today's episode of Go Be Wyoming, Aaron had the pleasure to interview 17-year DCI (Division of Criminal Investigation) Detective, Chris McDonald. Chris is the Team Leader for the ICAC (Internet Crimes Against Children) division for the State of Wyoming. Chris briefly describes the laws and rules of enforcement for Detectives within the DCI throughout Wyoming. They cover what a day-to-day and week-to-week looks like for DCI and ICAC agents. DCI are also the detectives that investigate and gather the evidence in any officer involved shooting across the state and provide that information to the local County District Attorney's Office to make the final determination. The DCI reports directly to the Attorney General and Governor's office – but obviously works closely with local law enforcement agencies. At ICAC, they receive internet tips from the NCMEC (National Center for Missing and Exploited Children) who have received majority of the tips from the large tech companies who flag potential internet crimes. Learn more about ICAC and Internet Crimes – if you are a parent or educator this is a great episode to learn about ways to prevent these crimes or to catch exploitation online. “We are Legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us.” Anonymous - the hacking collective that for many put hacking on the map. Since 2007, Anonymous has hacked just about everyone: the CIA, NSA, the Federal Reserve, other governmental agency websites around the world, the KKK, the Church of Scientology as well. They've released millions of classified documents. They've disrupted business for multimillion-dollar corporations. Why do they do all this? Looking into that today. Also digging in the history of hacking and the culture of hacking they come from. Also looking into some other hacker organizations and some massive hacks they've pulled off, like hacking into ATM networks and deciding when and how much cash an ATM will kick out. The group that did that has stolen over 1.2 billion dollars to date. Hope you learn a lot with this one today. Get ready for lots of techno music and tons of cyber facts. Hail Nimrod! Jeff Griesemer is the founder of Child Rescue Network(CRN) where he serves as President and CEO. In 1994, Jeff saw first-hand the incredible damage inflicted on two innocent children who were abducted but finally rescued after 5 long years. Since then, he has been involved with issues regarding missing and victimized children. In addition to 17 years experience developing and implementing child safety programs, he has received training from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the US Justice Department's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, and Fox Valley Technical College regarding missing child case management and safety procedures. He also had training including Incident Command, Search and Rescue techniques, Missing Child & Disabled Adult Search procedures with the NJ State Police and Internet Crimes training with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Here are some of the highlights from the episode: Getting the Word Out: Speaking and Public Relations Marketing your brand is very important for any nonprofit. Ways of achieving this are speaking, getting out in the community and talking to different groups including groups like Rotary, professional groups and chambers of commerce. It also includes the media. If there's a local story you can provide appropriate content or context for, reach out to the media and let them know you are available for interview anytime. Over time you will establish a positive relationship with them. This means they will likely reach out to you when something comes up. Traditional Fundraising is Still a Relevant Funding Tool for Nonprofits Cause marketing was Jeff's main idea of raising money because of his background in radio. He consults businesses and nonprofits on how partnerships can bring much-needed programs to communities, while also enhancing corporate brands and building customer loyalty. With so much focus on this in the early days he admitted to missing out on some opportunities. So now they are trying to catch up on applying for more grants, working on building donor relations and using other fundraising tools that nonprofits utilize. Identifying Potential Corporate Partners Corporate partners should be ones that have a natural passion for your mission. An example is a bottled water company which donates to areas of the world where drinking water is scarce. Jeff explained that this and other corporations or businesses who do a similar act of giving are really living out their mission. Consumers expect companies to give back to the community. The result is being more friendly to customers, and growing a base of loyal customers. But make a note that customers also can spot it if it's more about the company than the cause. In closing, Jeff shared: "You just have to remember that you have that passion, keep that vision in front of you, front and center, keep moving forward. And, while it may not happen as quickly as you would like if you just keep pushing for it, it does happen. Things fall into place..." Tonight's special guest is Teresa Belsky of North Platt, Nebraska, an abuse survivor and activist who's especially concerned with anti-trafficking campaigns, issues of child XXX-rated pictures and Internet crimes against women and children. Teresa writes, "My first major nervous breakdown began after the FBI came to our door to question my then husband. To make a long story short, I wasn't his camera's only victim." (He had been hiding a camera for 10 years) "I started having flashbacks of attacks mixed with memories of happiness. A cycle. I was married to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde." In the ensuing few years, Teresa suffered from numerous embarrassments, flashbacks and humiliations. Bouts of PTDS were frequent. Teresa says, "The moral of my story is to be careful how the use of cameras can affect your life. I understand that my ex started watching XXX-rated materials at age 5 from 3pm to 5pm every day after school. Unfortunately, he was raped by a neighbor man at the age of 7." She concludes, "Thank you for allowing me to pass the lesson I learned on to you. By doing so, I did not suffer in vain." She's returned to school and is planning to open an office of W.C.A.I.C. (Women and Children Affected by Internet Crimes) in North Platte in 2015. "When I initially sought help in the past, I was told 'Sorry, we can't help you. NO ONE is trained in that area.' Thus... I am a Psychology major and future Therapist for Human Trafficking Victims / Survivors in 2015 (after I graduate)."
