The Pale Crawler is a modern cryptid legend and Halloween Favorite tied to The Rake, a creepypasta deliberately created online in 2005. What began as an anonymous forum experiment soon became a wave of alleged humanoid sightings, viral trail-camera images, Reddit stories and YouTube horror. In this episode of Terrifying & True, we trace Operation Crawler and the birth of The Rake creepypasta, the alleged Effingham, Illinois and rural Kentucky encounters, the notorious Louisiana “swamp monster” trail-camera hoax, and the internet feedback loop that transformed a collaborative horror story into modern folklore. We also examine ordinary explanations behind many Pale Crawler sightings, including mangy deer, low-light misidentification, pareidolia, sleep paralysis, pranks and staged footage. As Halloween season approaches, the Pale Crawler has become a perfect spooky-season urban legend: a blank-faced humanoid said to crawl on all fours, rise taller than a person and vanish into the woods. Like Slender Man and other internet-born monsters, it survives because every eyewitness account, comment and viral video makes the story feel a little more real. Our Film Club roundtables are back with a discussion on the new horror sensation Backrooms. It tells the story of Clark, a disgruntled furniture store owner who discovers a portal into another dimension in the basement of his store. When Clark goes missing, his therapist, Mary, goes looking for him, and ventures into the liminal space we know as Backrooms. The Backrooms phenomenon goes all the way back to 2019 starting with a post on 4Chan, where an anonymous person posted an unsettling image of an empty, seemingly ongoing office area with yellow carpet and walls.  It created a boom in the horror subgenre called “Liminal Spaces” - places that are normally occupied by lots of people but feel uncanny and eerie when empty. In January 2022, a 14 year old named Kane Parsons started making found footage-style short films set in these liminal space.  At 19 years old Parsons directed the feature-length version of Backrooms and has become the youngest director to open a film at number one at the North American box office. Steve Bannon saw the trolls as a political constituency and helped pipeline their energy into the MAGA movement, and that same anarchic, rules-don't-apply attitude now shows up in everything from Department of Homeland Security social media posts to Trump sharing content depicting Barack and Michelle Obama as apes.Hawk walks through the rise of figures like Clavvicular, a live streamer who hits his face with a hammer for attention and openly associates with white supremacist Nick Fuentes and alleged sex trafficker Andrew Tate.
