Small Biz Matters: People Policy Purpose ~ Episode #254         Broadcast date: 4 Feb 2025 Host: Alexi Boyd, Small Business Advocate & Policy Advisor Guests: Lewis Rangott, Executive Director, Corruption Prevention, ICAC For those of us old enough to remember the 90's, there used to be a political tagline – Keeping the Bastards Honest.  It belonged to a political party which has since disappeared but them became a popular slogan, used by media outlets when describing how to keep a watchful eye on those holding the purse-strings, those making decisions and those creating policy. Even though that political party no longer exists, the question remains, Who does look after the integrity of our political system and keeps a watchful eye those who pull the levers governing in particular, business? The vast majority of small businesses strive to be fair and equitable in their business practices, and we expect those in politics to behave the same way. But the reality is, just like some small businesses, they are also prone to turning a blind eye, the misuse of funds or power or dare I say it, corruption. We demand a level playing field in business and expect it from our political leaders too. In NSW, the body dedicated to investigating, exposing, and preventing corruption in the NSW public sector is the Independent Commission Against Corruption or ICAC. They promote accountability and transparency in government decision-making by identifying corrupt practices and ensuring public officials act with integrity. But what's that got to do with small business? Well, their work helps level the playing field. By rooting out corruption in processes like procurement, licensing, and regulatory compliance, the ICAC ensures small businesses can compete fairly without the need to bribe or navigate biased systems. This creates an environment of trust, where decisions are made on merit rather than influence or favouritism. To explain how and why and the impact the ICAC has on small businesses, we are joined by Lewis Rangott, Executive Director of Corruption Prevention at ICAC for I'm sure what will be a fascinating discussion about who now, as the saying goes, Keeps the Bastards Honest. PEOPLE -  can you tell me about the role of the ICAC? How do other Australian states and territories manage political fairness? Why it's an important part of keeping the political ecosystem fair and equitable for everyone?  Why is it important for should small businesses to understand about the ICAC's work? ICAC has done some outreach work, can you explain how this supports rural/regional small businesses? POLICY - when is small business owner raises concerns with a local MP or any representative of government, what sort of a response should they expect in return? How can we find a better balance to ensure small businesses have just as much access to policy makers as those who can afford to buy it? PURPOSE - Describing the circumstances in which a private sector business could be found to have engaged in corrupt conduct. Can you tell us about the Operation Mantis report and how it involved some small businesses? Can you tell us about Op Hector, which might be relevant because we recommended a debarment scheme for certain corrupt businesses (which the Government has said it would implement). About our Guest Lewis Rangott BEc (Hons) MCom started his corruption prevention career at the Commission in 2003 as a senior corruption prevention officer and principal officer. He then held senior corruption prevention roles in the public and private sectors before being appointed to the position of Executive Director, Corruption Prevention, in May 2017. Mr Rangott is also a certified fraud examiner The NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) is dedicated to investigating, exposing, and preventing corruption in the NSW public sector. Independent of the government of the day, the ICAC promotes accountability and transparency in government decision-making by identifying corrupt practices and ensuring public officials act with integrity. For the small business community, the ICAC's work helps level the playing field. By rooting out corruption in processes like procurement, licensing, and regulatory compliance, the ICAC ensures small businesses can compete fairly without the need to bribe or navigate biased systems. This creates an environment of trust, where decisions are made on merit rather than influence or favouritism. Additionally, the ICAC's prevention programs and advice encourage better governance, reducing opportunities for corruption to occur. By fostering a clean, ethical public sector, the ICAC indirectly supports the growth of small businesses, enabling them to thrive in a fair and transparent economic landscape.

On this weeks podcast, I spoke with Australian barrister & Public Prosecutor now defence lawyer Margaret Cunneen SC. For over four decades, Margaret Cunneen helped put away some of Australia's worst, as a crown prosecutor and, as her profile grew, so did the media attention, Margaret recalls the headline cases that helped establish her reputation, the controversies she became embroiled in. In 2022 Margaret published her autobiography “ The Boxing Butterfly” A Life Of Conviction is a career chronicle of Margaret Cunneen SC—the boxing butterfly who turned the tables on ICAC, amidst prosecuting murderers, pedophiles and rapists—as she launches into her new chapter as a defence barrister. In her rearview mirror, Cunneen sees her trial successes—her convictions—interspersed with the flak from the ground fire of some colleagues who resented her success and were determined to stop her climb to greater heights. She regrets nothing and is satisfied with what she does. As Madam Crown, she empathised with the victims and their families. Now, as defence counsel, she empathises with the accused she defends. And what stories she tells! Some are gruesome and confronting, such as prosecuting the irreverent Skafs for gang rape, Robert ‘Dolly' Dunn for pedophilia, the Butcher of Bega for unspeakable medical malpractice and the Charbaji Brothers for an ice- fuelled torture session that ended in murder. Others—especially relating to her defence clients, are filled with humanity.  Margaret is a wife Mother and Grandmother loves her NRL and is a passionate Manly fan, she is deeply faithful we spoke about the many high-profile cases she has been involved with the toll of being in the public sector, and how Margaret dealt with some of the terrible cases she has worked on over the 45 years. This was a ripping chat. Presenter: Adam Blum Guest: Margaret Cunneen SC Editor: Kyle Watkins Investigative Consultant: Adam Holloway

It's not just a job; it's a mission.   The Emotional Toll: Recognizing the mental and emotional strain these officers endure and emphasizing the importance of mental health support for them.   A Collective Responsibility: Why society, technology companies, and families need to collaborate and be more vigilant than ever before.   For those on the front lines of the ICAC unit, this episode is a tribute to your courage and dedication. For our listeners, it's an eye-opener to the harsh realities of the digital world and a call to action. Mynde started on patrol and then worked as a School Resource Officer, a Field Training Officer, and then as a detective in the Narcotics Unit. Mynde also worked as a detective in the ICAC unit which is the Internet Crimes Against Children program. In 2018, Mynde was hired by the Bellevue Marshal's Office. As explained during the interview, the Bellevue Marshal's Office is essentially a police department but is called the Bellevue Marshal's Office because of the initial founding of the department dating back to the 1800s. Mynde eventually became the Marshal running the department while still conducting her patrol duties until 2023 when she retired.

Episode 73 Dallas Police Homicide Sergeant Jessica Criddle Welcome back ATO Family as we are extremely happy to welcome Dallas native, Homicide Sgt. Jessica Criddle to the ATO stage and pull back the curtain a bit on this amazing human's life. She attended The Booker T. Washington Highschool for Arts and studied dance. She then ventured to Sam Houston State and dove into Biology Pre-Med and Dance and graduating with honors in 2003. Jessica then began interning at the Medical Examiner's Office and was accepted into the Dallas School of Mortuary Science, but turned it down to join Dallas PD. After reading her resume, pre- DPD, I wondered how in the hell did the City of Dallas get such an exceptionally brilliant mind to work on the Dallas Police Department? The answer is simple…..She chose to serve this City. She has worked various assignments, including IAD, ICAC, Child Exploitation and now her current assignment is Dallas Homicide. Wherever she goes the lasting Impression she leaves on her coworkers is that they love her and would run into battle with her. There are so many layers to Jessica's “Why” in life and I encourage the listener to sit back and soak in the story of a truly fierce and incredibly unique individual that just happens to wear a Dallas Police badge. The theater lights are dimmed...the curtain is slowly rising and the stage lights are shining bright……….Jessica Criddle is center stage. Once there was public outcry from some quarters that ICAC would even investigate Gladys Berejiklian – one of the most popular premiers in NSW history. Flowers were left at her electoral office after she stepped down, and talkback radio callers were furious with ICAC for precipitating her resignation. But now we know that Berejiklian was seriously corrupt when she was treasurer and later the premier. Today, national correspondent for The Saturday Paper Mike Seccombe on Gladys Berejiklian's conduct and why it points to deeper misconduct in our politics.
