UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF GLOBAL MONEY TRANSFER IN FINANCIAL SEXTORTION SCHEMES IMPACTING TEENS AND ADULTS. Recently, our team of researchers at Million Kids saw two completely different articles about criminal online exploitation scams involving large payouts of money that were generated out of the country and impacted U.S citizens. One had the headline: “I lost $1M to a romance scam” and the other was the announcement of the arrest of criminals in West Africa that brought a naïve but incredible young man in Northern California to take his own life. Both stories are enormously heartbreaking.During this podcast we are going to look at the impact of global high speed 5g internet connection that is literally allowing overseas criminals to open the doors of unsuspecting lives in the U.S, and fleecing them of their money, driving them into deep depression and sometimes ends in suicide. We will discuss the role of scam farms where organized crime is enslaving tens of thousands of poor people in Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, Pakistan, Ivory Coast, Brazil, Mexico, India, and Nigeria and forcing them to seduce and fleece victims in the U.S., Australia, and United Kingdom etc. The most common forms of payment used by the scammers are Cash App, Venmo, Zelle, Apple Pay and online gift cards such as iTunes, Google Play, Amazon and Steam Cards. The world of online financial sextortion and romance scams is changing fast. The global connection of technology literally puts third world criminals at your front door. We must talk to our kids (and seniors) so they understand how a globally connected world literally puts global predators and criminals right in their bedrooms and back pocket. And they won't look like you think they do.
Criminals are exploiting the trust that young iPhone users have in the device's built-in message platform to make relentless demands for money. WSJ family and tech columnist Julie Jargon reports on the tragic results of those scams, and what parents need to know. Plus: Artificial intelligence companies have been the leading backers of technologies like solar energy and battery storage. Now, WSJ tech and crypto reporter Amrith Ramkumar reports those firms are trying to convince Congress to leave their clean-energy tax credits alone. Sign up for the WSJ's free Technology newsletter. Sextortion scams targeting teen boys are on the rise — and they're happening through platforms parents trust, like Instagram, Snapchat and even Apple's iMessage. In this eye-opening conversation, Scrolling 2 Death host Nicki Petrossi and Sarah Gardner of Heat Initiative expose the devastating impact of these scams and the chilling truth about Apple's inaction. Why hasn't Apple built better protections? Why are predators thriving in their ecosystem? Why is Apple ignoring the CSAM stored in iCloud? And what can parents do right now to safeguard their children? This is a must-listen for anyone who believes Big Tech should be held accountable for child safety.Wall Street Journal: 'Sextortion' Scams Involving Apple Messages Ended in Tragedy for These BoysAbout Sarah GardnerSarah Gardner is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Heat Initiative. Prior to launching Heat's campaign to hold Apple accountable, Sarah spent 10 years at Thorn, an organization that builds technology to combat online child sexual abuse, where she was integral to its growth from a small, start-up effort to a multi-million dollar nonprofit. As Vice President of External Affairs, she helped develop a plan to eliminate child sexual abuse material from the internet which spurred a $63M investment in the organization through the TED Audacious Prize. This week, we hear from Kathryn Rifenbark, the Director for CyberTipline, Public Reports, in the Exploited Children Division (ECD) at the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC). In this talk from the 2024 CESE Summit, she shares about the impact of Sextortion on today's young people and talks about a powerful new service that can be used to help. Self-generated content is a normative behavior of today's youth. But it can have a destructive impact when it's non-consensually shared or when they have been blackmailed or coerced into producing it. Take It Down is a new, anonymous, and free service that can help prevent the spread of online sharing of nude, partially nude, or sexually explicit images or videos of those under the age of 18. This session will provide an overview of Take it Down, operated by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC). Launched in December of 2022, participants will learn the amazing impact of this global program, how it works and how you can share this resource with children, victims, and families in your community. Kathryn has worked at NCMEC for over 14 years, and in her current position, Kathryn is responsible for enhancing NCMEC's efforts to improve resources for survivors of child sexual abuse material by liaising with law enforcement, victim service providers, and child serving professionals as well as managing the team who processes public CyberTipline reports. She received a Master of Arts in Forensic Psychology and a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. In the U.S., the cost of cybercrime in 2025 is estimated to hit $639.2 billion— up from $452.3 billion in 2024—an alarming surge fueled in large part by advancements in AI. Today, Nicole sits down with tech journalist Laurie Segall to uncover one of the darkest AI-driven scams: a disturbing scheme where scammers generate fake nude images to extort their victims. In this conversation, Laurie breaks down the most common deepfake crimes and scams, how to spot them, and how to protect yourself. She also shares the jaw-dropping story of her investigation into a shadowy figure known as “Mr. Deepfakes,” a man she describes as one of the most dangerous people on the internet, and what happened when she tracked him down and confronted him face-to-face. Nicole and Laurie zoom out to ask even bigger questions: What does this mean for women, for democracy, and for the future of AI? Spoiler alert: we are still very much in the Wild West. Follow Laurie's work, and her investigation into Mr. Deepfakes here.

E come possiamo riconoscerla? The Problem of Sexual Extortion Sexual extortion, or “Sextortion” as it is sometimes called, is a new and growing problem. In the 21st century, there have been various problems related to the “connectedness” that being online offers, and sometimes these problems are not evenly divided among the sexes. Sexual extortion is one of the newer ones. Young men seem to be particularly susceptible not just to being fooled into seeking and sharing nude pictures but also into an even darker situation when those pictures are used against them. Because of this, we wanted to release a short episode encouraging christian parents and ministers to do two things: Parents - Talk with your children about why God invented sex but also the dangers associated with it. All christians - Be clear that Christ died for all sins, and paid for all guilt and shame in the believer's life so that we don't have to fear consequences related to sin, even in our very online age. This too shall pass. "The Empires of the future will be Empires of the Mind." - Winston Churchill
The crime of sextortion has been around for nearly two decades. Historically sextortion involved someone being tricked and coerced into sending a nude or illicit image, video or sharing an explicit live stream. There were many different variations of sextortion and driving influencers. Sometimes it was an individual pedophile that wanted to own/control their victim and even meet up to exploit the victim. Then we saw sextortion increase throughout child sexual abuse material rings (CSAM), formerly called child pornography. This developed primarily on the dark web and then moved off shore to countries that operate in "don't ask- don't tell" environments. But the world has changed over the past three years and few people are taking note. We have seen a convergence of advanced technologies that have come together to change online exploitation into total **digital warfare** - warfare that targets our kids and our seniors. This podcast will be the first of several podcasts to explore the implications of ten separate technologies that have many great features. At the same time these technologies create a perfect storm for pedophiles, predators, cartels and third world criminals giving them immediate access to exploit our children.

Sextortion is a steadily rising form of online blackmail, primarily targeting teenaged boys. The warning signs are easy to spot if you are aware of what they look like; we are aiming to increase awareness and create the opportunity for more discussions about this dangerous scam. Please be advised, this episode discusses suicide and several cases of children who completed suicide resulting from sextortion. Jordan is a star athlete and homecoming king who is packing for a beach vacation when he receives a message on Instagram. The account is of an attractive girl named Dani. Jordan exchanges flirty messages with her, and eventually, she convinces him to send an explicit photo of himself. That's when everything changes. Dani threatens to send the photo to his family and friends if he doesn't pay $1,000. Jordan tragically sees no way out and dies by suicide. Law enforcement tracks the crime to brothers in Nigeria, and in a landmark case, extradites them to the US where they are convicted and sentenced. Jordan's parents share his story in hopes of preventing similar tragedies.
Recent headlines tell us about a rise in teen boys being lured into sending explicit photos and then blackmailed for money to avoid these being published on the web. Some of these cases have resulted in suicide and the FBI has sent out warnings to parents. Of course, exploitation through explicit photos is nothing new to teen girls as well. How are parents to respond to these threats? Jessica and Dr. Ken approach these issues as an opportunity for real dialogue and not another occasion for fear. Open conversation about online threats are particularly important for parents of teenagers that may appear to be innocent of any sexual interest. Adolescents need to be prepared for online threats not just protected. We cover all this and more. Late last month, an article appeared on the USA Today website under the headline, “These teenage boys were blackmailed online- and it cost them their lives.” Above the headline was a collage of photos of smiling, happy teens, each of whom had died by suicide after getting caught up in an online trap called financial sextortion. It's a cybercrime that occurs when an online predator cultivates a friendly relationship with an unknowing young person who grows to trust the interactions, thinking that this person is a friend. Eventually the predator engages in sexually explicit conversation with the victim or convinces the victim to send a nude photograph. Immediately, the victim is threatened with exposure or jail time unless they send a large amount of money, sending message upon message stating such, which leads the victim to panic, which leads many to see no way out but suicide. Parents, the message here is clear: warn your kids to never engage online with someone they don't know.
Getting blackmailed over nonexistent nudes? On Skeptical Sunday, Nick Pell untangles the dark web of sextortion and why kids face the greatest danger. On This Week's Skeptical Sunday: The basic sextortion scam is just sophisticated phishing. Those alarming emails claiming to have compromising footage of you? Pure fiction. These scammers cast wide nets, sending millions of messages hoping a tiny percentage will bite. They typically have basic information (your name, email, maybe your address) purchased from dark web data brokers, but nothing actually incriminating. The golden rule: if they don't show you the evidence, it doesn't exist. Children face genuine sextortion risks online. While adults receive empty threats, children encounter a far more dangerous reality. Predators create fake profiles mimicking peers, establish trust, and eventually manipulate children into sharing compromising images. Once obtained, these images become leverage for extorting money, demanding more explicit content, or worse — attempting to arrange in-person meetings. It's a digital trap baited with false friendship. Modern kids are safer outside but more vulnerable online. We've bubble-wrapped the physical world for children with public awareness campaigns, enhanced security measures, and helicopter parenting. Yet ironically, we hand these same protected children devices that connect them directly to potential predators. The statistics are alarming: 40% of surveyed kids reported someone attempting to groom them online, and 6% of children aged 9-12 have sent self-generated sexual content. Victims often remain silent due to shame and fear. The humiliation of falling for scams creates a powerful silencing effect. As Nick candidly shared about his own experience with cryptocurrency scammers: "It's not about the money. Losing the money sucks, don't get me wrong. But it's so humiliating." This shame multiplies exponentially with sexual content, especially for adolescents already navigating identity and social acceptance. A staggering 82% of young victims report being too scared to seek help. Open communication creates crucial safety nets. The most powerful protection isn't restrictive software or monitoring apps — it's creating an environment where kids know they can come to you without judgment if they make mistakes online. Make it crystal clear: "If you ever get into trouble online, I'm here for you, I'll support you, and you won't be punished because someone manipulated or tricked you." This simple assurance can be the emergency exit that leads vulnerable young people to seek help rather than spiraling deeper into exploitation. Having this conversation today could save your child from becoming a statistic tomorrow. Connect with Jordan on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. Online sextortion scams are on the rise, targeting young victims—especially teen boys—by coercing them into sharing explicit images, then blackmailing them into silence. These predators use fear, humiliation, and intimidation to trap their victims, often with devastating consequences. Our guest today, South Carolina Representative Brandon Guffey, knows this horror firsthand. In 2022, his 17-year-old son, Gavin, fell victim to sextortion and tragically took his own life. Since then, Brandon has dedicated his life to raising awareness, passing Gavin's Law to make sextortion a felony in South Carolina, and fighting for accountability from tech giants like Meta. Through his nonprofit, Less Than Three, he works to educate families, protect young people, and prevent future tragedies. This conversation is both heartbreaking and urgent. Parents, brace yourselves for a wake-up call! Dr. Phil delves into the alarming rise of sextortion targeting teen boys, uncovering the silent threats lurking in the digital world and urging families to tighten their bonds before it's too late. There's a dangerous and silent predator infiltrating homes across America, preying on the vulnerability of teen boys. In an era where familial connections are dwindling, virtual sextortionists capitalize on teenagers' longing for connection, exploiting their impulses and their parents' lack of tech-savvy. Tamia and Tim Woods talk about how their son, James, took his own life after being preyed on by sextortionists and receiving over 200 messages in 19 hours. South Carolina State Representative Brandon Guffey tells the story of how his son, Gavin, killed himself less than 2 hours after sextortionists contacted him. Rick is a 15-year-old sextortion survivor who says he skipped school for a week and stole from his parents before finally telling his mother, Deanna, that he was being sextorted. Deanna stepped in and reported them to the FBI. Nico is another sextortion survivor who was blackmailed by sextortionists at age 14, staying up for 24 hours before telling his mother Sue-Anne. Cyber security expert and founder of Bullyville, James McGibney, talks about why teen boys are the prime target for this crime and what parents can do to protect their kids online.
