On this episode of the Scouting For Growth podcast, Sabine VdL talks to James Birch, Director of Strategic Technology Solutions at Ki Insurance—the first fully algorithmic syndicate in the history of Lloyd’s of London. In today’s conversation, we’ll explore: James’s journey from VC to algorithmic-underwriting pioneer, what a “director of strategic technology solutions” actually does day-to-day inside a digital syndicate, the partnerships, cloud architecture and data streams that let Ki quote in seconds, the biggest trends shaping Algorithmic Underwriting 2.0—and what they mean for brokers, capacity partners and the wider market, and practical take-aways for anyone who wants to thrive as the next wave of automation rolls through speciality insurance KEY TAKEAWAYS Ki is a growth stage business, not an incumbent, we’re trying to fight our way to win business and ultimately to grow. We have to do something different from everyone else to try to position ourselves differently and find competitive advantage where we can. That’s something I’ve carried over from the VC space. We started out looking at what the digital model of the traditional model, where was the toil in the value chain and the broker’s work plan process and how can we simplifying it and make it more efficient using digital capabilities that we saw in the VC space, in FinTech and other financial service industries. Lloyds of London is a heavily regulated market so we need to abide by any of the regulations that any carrier or underwriter do in that market. Our approach from day 1 was to engage with the regulator early, explain what we’re trying to do, be transparent, open and honest about where the gaps are if we’d not got to a certain level of maturity, don’t overstate the algorithm. We take regulation very seriously, which has helped because Lloyds has been highly supportive of us and our growth and have allowed us to grow as the market has grown. The main cost-save of the algorithmic underwriting for brokers is they don’t have to have loads of brokers running around the Lloyds of London building to find 2% on a slip or something, the broker negotiates with the lead underwriter, come onto the Ki platform for the follow, and then spend their time on new business and client opportunities. BEST MOMENTS ‘Any business should evolve as the market evolves and the marketing dynamics changes, you’ve got to react to those and be thinking 2-5 years ahead.’ ‘We still trip up on ourselves, even now, because we sometimes try to over-complicate things.’ ‘Speak to the customer, hear their problems, understand what’s not working for them, try to make it a simple transaction for them, and then they’ll use your products.’ ‘I’m a big advocate of the partner model because if you get 2, 3, or 4 like-minded companies as partners you can build something great together because you’re all strategically aligned.’ ABOUT THE GUEST James Birch is the Director of Strategic Technology Solutions at Ki Insurance, the market-leading algorithmic syndicate that’s redefining how Lloyd’s of London does business. Blending a venture-capital mindset with hands-on operating rigor, James has spent the past decade helping innovative companies move from bright idea to breakout scale. Passionate about demystifying insurance for the next generation, James is a sought-after speaker on topics such as data-driven risk selection, the future of algorithmic capacity and what it really takes to scale a regulated tech business. Whether mentoring founders or road-testing the latest ML models with his engineers, he’s driven by one simple goal: use technology to make risk transfer faster, fairer and radically more efficient. English curator and art dealer James Birch is arguably best known for his innovative ways of championing British art - including exhibiting the works of figurative painter Francis Bacon in Moscow in the late 1980s, when Russia was part of the USSR. Birch's new book Bacon In Moscow tells the story of his audacious effort to bring Bacon's raw, unsettling works to more than 400,000 Soviet citizens.
There is something of a Francis Bacon season going on here at Hatchards, with 'Bacon in Moscow' chosen as our non-fiction Book of the Month, multiple new releases across various genres covering the artist's work, and a new exhibition entitled 'Man and Beast' across the road at the Royal Academy. In this episode, we invited author Max Porter ('Lanny,' 'Grief is the Thing With Feathers') and the author and art curator James Birch ('Bacon in Moscow') to discuss the life and works of the famed 20th-century figurative artist. Mr. Birch first met Bacon when he was a little boy, and maintained a close relationship with him until the end of his life. In July of 1986, he successfully curated an exhibition of the artist's work in the former USSR, allowing more than 400,000 Soviet citizens to view Bacon's work for the first time. Mr. Porter's devotion to Bacon's work began when he was a teenager, and he spent the better part of the 2020 national lockdown writing an imagined memoir about the last days of the artist's life. The resulting novella, 'The Death of Francis Bacon,' is an extraordinary series of six "written pictures" transmuting Bacon's unsettling imagery into the written word. Both of these authors' fascinating new books can be purchased in signed, exclusive editions in the shop and on our website.Hosted by Ryan Edgington and Matt Hennessey.
This week we chat to James Birch, gallery owner and author of Bacon in Moscow, about his life-long friendship with Francis Bacon, one of Britain's most popular and controversial artists. Having known him since childhood and been a regular Soho drinking companion, James gives us a fascinating often funny and moving insight Bacon's life. He tells us all about his new book, the extraordinary story of taking a Bacon exhibition to Moscow in the late eighties during Perestroika. James also sheds light on the influences behind many of Bacon's paintings showing in the brilliant new exhibition Francis Bacon: Man and Beast at the Royal Academy in London. We also give you a run down on what to see in the art world this month. In London, there are Van Gogh's Self-Portraits at the Courtauld Gallery, Louise Bourgeois at the Hayward Gallery, Helen Frankenthaler at Dulwich Picutre Gallery and Lubaina Himid at Tate Modern. Meanwhile, outside London, there's an exhibition of prints From Hockney to Hamid at Pallant House in Chichester, Audubon's Birds of America opens at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh and Ai Weiwei's exhibition The Liberty of Doubt opens at the wonderful Kettle's Yard in Cambridge. We also suggest a visit to the glorious Yorkshire Sculpture Park to see Full Circle, an exhibition of drawings by David Nash. And our top tip of the week? Beg, steal, cheat, lie, borrow to get to see Eddie Redmayne and Jessie Buckley in Cabaret at the Playhouse Theatre, brilliantly converted into the KitKat Club in 1930's Berlin. Kiefer Sutherland talks about his just-released third album, Bloor Street. Northern Irish Opera open a new production of Stephen Sondheim's 'Into The Woods' starring Sean Kearns and directed by Cameron Menzies. The book 'Bacon In Moscow' describes how, despite all odds, James Birch took an exhibition of Francis Bacon's work to Moscow in the 1980s.
In this week's Book Club podcast, my guest is the gallerist James Birch - whose new book Bacon In Moscow describes how he achieved the seemingly impossible: taking an exhibition of Francis Bacon's work to Moscow in the late 1980s. James tells me how he negotiated between the volatile artist and the implacable Soviet bureaucracy with the help of a suave but menacing KGB middleman; and how, along the way, he nearly acquired an original Francis Bacon painting and nearly acquired a Russian wife.

Helen Mark visits Doddington Hall in Lincolnshire to talk about how the estate's shoot forms part of the landscape management and a desire for locally-sourced produce. It also provides the farm shop and restaurant with festive fare, including pigeon burgers. James Birch is Doddington's owner, (his wife's family have owned the estate continuously for around four hundred years). Shooting has always been part of life here and even now there's a full-time gamekeeper, who doubles as security guard and fly-tipping preventer. The game from the shoot is used in the restaurant and is cooked by Chris Maclure, senior sous-chef, who makes sure nothing goes to waste. Helen talks to university lecturer- turned-florist Rachel Petheram, who loves the challenge of using only locally-grown flowers and herbs in her Christmas displays. Helen also goes beating with Will Birkett, a young gamekeeper preparing for a day's shooting with his gun dogs. Producer...Mary Ward-Lowery.
