Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Maybe let the non-EA world train you, published by ElliotT on June 14, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This post is for EAs at the start of their careers who are considering which organisations to apply to, and their next steps in general. Conclusion up front: It can be really hard to get that first job out of university. If you don't get your top picks, your less exciting backup options can still be great for having a highly impactful career. If those first few years of work experience aren't your best pick, they will still be useful as a place where you can 'learn how to job', save some money, and then pivot or grow from there. The main reasons are: The EA job market can be grim. Securing a job at an EA organisation out of university is highly competitive, often resulting in failing to get a job, or chaotic job experiences due to the nascent nature of many EA orgs. An alternative, of getting short-term EA grants to work independently is not much better, as it can lead to financial instability and hinder long-term professional growth. Non-EA jobs have a lot of benefits. They offer a stable and structured environment to build skills, learn organisational norms, get feedback, etc. After, you'll be better placed to do directly impactful work. After a few years at a non-EA job, you'll be better placed to fill a lot of roles at EA orgs. You might also be able to start something yourself. Caveats: Of course, take everything with a grain of salt. For every piece of advice, there is someone who needs to hear the opposite, and the advice in here is no exception. Acknowledgments: Thanks to the following people for giving some great feedback on an a draft of this post and making it better: David Nash, Matt Reardon, Chana Messinger, Karla Still, Michelle Hutchinson. All opinions are my own. All mistakes are chatGPT's. What's the problem? Three failure modes of trying to get an EA job It seems like a lot of people who are motivated by the ideas of effective altruism, use 'get a job at an 'EA org' as shorthand for 'how to have an impact with my career' (this includes me, but more on that later). By EA org I mean the kind of organisation where most people working there are EAs. This is understandable. Figuring out how to have a positive impact with your career is really hard. It's a reasonable heuristic that orgs within the EA community are more likely to have a big positive impact in the world than the average non-profit. Finally, we're all sensitive to status in our community, and in some parts of EA, working at an EA org is definitely considered pretty darn cool. One issue with this that I want to briefly flag is that 'working at an EA org' and 'doing impactful work' are not interchangeable (Michelle at 80,000 Hours covers that well here). But the other thing that you probably know is that EA jobs are really hard to get. They are really, really, competitive. Some jobs get hundreds of high-quality applications. I think this leads to a few failure modes. Story 1 - Lots of rejections: An ambitious, smart, highly engaged EA, fresh out of uni, applies to a lot of EA organisations. They make it far in the hiring rounds, maybe even to trial periods. But, after many disheartening months of applications, trial tasks, and interviews, they don't get an EA job at an EA org. Story 2 - Chaotic EA Job: Alternatively, maybe they get the job at an impactful organisation, thinking they've made it past the hard bit. However, many EA orgs are very young. This can lead to things like a chaotic onboarding, a lack of HR practices, inexperienced managers, and sudden changes in funding or strategy that can leave them without a job. And if that isn't enough, EA branding does not guarantee an org is doing impactful work. Both of these stories are pretty bad. These situations are psychologically and...

EA - Introducing Hive: A rebrand for Impactful Animal Advocacy by Hive (formerly Impactful Animal Advocacy)

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Introducing Hive: A rebrand for Impactful Animal Advocacy, published by Hive (formerly Impactful Animal Advocacy) on May 7, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Last month, we made an April Fools Day post about rebranding to Shrimpactful Animal Advocacy. It was a two-sided joke, because we are rebranding. As of today, Impactful Animal Advocacy is now Hive. Our new name won't have the word "impactful" in it - but it's still an important part of our mission: to end factory farming through creating impact-focused communities. We are excited to announce that Impactful Animal Advocacy is now Hive, the same organization with a fresh look and feel. After much thought and consideration, we envision Hive to better reflect who we are - capturing our collaborative spirit and commitment to generating impact within the farmed animal advocacy movement. Why rebrand? This change is, in part, a response to common feedback that the name Impactful Animal Advocacy is too long (10 syllabus!), hard to remember, and difficult to recognize as the acronym IAA. We want to empower animal advocates to do work that's effective and impactful. And if they are, we want them to feel comfortable calling their work impactful animal advocacy without worrying about overstepping into an org's name. Why we chose Hive We want to convey a sense of friendliness and approachability, combined with a rational and results-driven approach. Additionally, we wanted to avoid using an acronym if possible. Name: Hive. The word hive is a place full of activity, and in the context of bees, it's a place where many gather. Hive symbolizes collaboration and coordination, while still bearing a subtle animal element. Logo: Hexagon with 3 typing indicator dots. The hexagon is a reference to bee hives. The three typing indicator dots are common on digital platforms, and help explain that we are a largely online community that thrives on communication. Colors: Deep and light orange gradient. We think these warmer colors will help establish the brand as a place for fresh ideas and energy. The fluid nature of the gradient represents the diversity of viewpoints and collaborative nature of our community. How this change affects our community or programs You will see that our name, logo, and website will be changed. Besides that, our programs (Slack, newsletter, etc) will run as usual. Other changes that you may see, such as Community Calls, are not related to the rebrand and are instead part of our continuous improvements. We thank many people and organizations: Vegan Hacktivists for their initial logo design and brand kit - it helped us get started quickly and we are thankful this service helps other orgs get off the ground also. Our trusted advisors and mentors have been critical in supporting us through all the organizational growth we experienced in 2023. EA - International tax policy as a potential cause area by Tax Geek

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: International tax policy as a potential cause area, published by Tax Geek on January 24, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This is more of an exploratory post where I try to share some of my thoughts and experience working in international tax. Thanks in particular to David Nash for his encouragement and help in reviewing my drafts. Summary International tax rules govern how taxing rights are allocated between countries. International tax policy is likely to be an impactful cause area: Not only is there a significant amount of tax revenue at stake, there is a broader indirect impact as international tax rules can constrain domestic tax policies. International tax rules tend to be relatively sticky, persisting for decades. In recent years, as international tax has gotten increasingly political, there may also be broader foreign policy implications. Yet international tax seems to be relatively neglected. Domestic tax issues tend to be more politicised, possibly because they affect voters more directly. International tax can be highly technical and rather opaque. Tractability depends on how you identify the "problem": In my view, a problem is that the development of international tax policy is dominated by relatively wealthy countries (particularly the US), who focus too heavily on their own national interest. While I doubt this broad problem can ever be fully "solved", I believe individuals can still play a significant role in mitigating it. Problem International tax policy plays a key role in determining how much companies are taxed and where. This in turn affects the level of tax revenue different countries get. The development of international tax policy is dominated by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which is made up of relatively wealthy countries. The US also plays a key role in international tax policy.[1] I believe that many people currently working in international tax policy focus too heavily on their national interest over the global interest. The problems here are not ones I think we can hope to fully "solve", as the problems stem from the underlying power dynamics between developed and developing countries and the natural incentives for government officials to prioritize their own country. However, international tax policy could still be a worthwhile area to consider working in, because it seems to be a relatively neglected space where individuals can have a surprisingly large impact in mitigating these problems. Background What is international tax policy? In broad terms, international tax policy governs how taxing rights are allocated between countries as well as matters of tax administration such as information sharing and dispute resolution. Countries enter into bilateral tax treaties that aim to prevent double taxation (i.e. when two or more countries try to tax the same income) without creating opportunities for tax avoidance or evasion. In recent years, there has also been a focus on multilateral tax projects, which may or may not result in a formal tax treaty. Bilateral DTAs A bilateral double tax agreement (DTA) is a tax treaty entered into by two countries. When a person/entity resident in one country earns income from another country, both countries may attempt to tax the same income. Such double taxation would inhibit cross-border investment and trade, so countries enter into bilateral DTAs to prevent this. Depending on the circumstances, DTAs will allocate taxing rights over the income to either: the residence country - where the person/entity earning the income lives or is managed; or the source country - where the income is earned. In very broad terms, in a treaty negotiation, developed countries generally want to increase the residence country's taxing rights, because they tend to have wealthy resident...

We have had a million deaths from COVID compared to 500,000 service men in WWII. The million deaths is far more than any other per capita in the world and how can that be for a nation that spends 20% of the greatest GDP of $4 Trillion on an industry that has this poor of outcomes? We are not ranked in the top 10 of western nations as it relates to health and positive outcomes. The book speaks to the recommendation of efforts necessary to fix the broken pieces. The book is available on Amazon and all proceeds go to The College of Population Health at Jefferson. Founding Dean at Jefferson College of Population Health, Dr. David Nash, recently co-authored a book entitled "How Covid Crashed The System: A Guide To Fixing American Health Care", in which he and Charles Wohlforth draw parallels between flying a plane and delivering healthcare services. Leaning into the analogy, they liken the American healthcare system to an airplane crash – and they're the post-crash investigators searching for the black box. The first half of the book describes to readers what was found in the black box of our healthcare system, while the second half presents the authors' report about how we might fix this mess and get the plane back in the air. In this episode, David joins The Christensen Institute's Ann Somers Hogg to discuss insights about the fault lines in American healthcare; how the pandemic shone a spotlight on the challenges that were already present long before March of 2020; and steps that we can take – including a more aggressive approach to tackling drivers of health, realigning incentives, and rethinking medical education – to address the multiple system failures in our current healthcare system. Listen to hear more about this opportunity to build a better, safer, and more equitable healthcare system in the United States.

Grandon Professor of Health Policy, at the Jefferson College of Population Health. He also serves as a Special Assistant to the Chief Physician Executive of Jefferson Health. He is a prolific author, with a forthcoming book, “How Covid Crashed the System: A Guide to Fixing American Health Care.” Dr. Nash received a Bachelor's in Economics from Vassar College, a medical degree from the University of Rochester, and an MBA in Health Administration from the University of Pennsylvania. Key Insights:Dr. Nash analyzed the pandemic like an investigation into a flight crash. The black box revealed a variety of misaligned incentives in our current healthcare system. Heroism is Counter-productive. Dr. Nash pushes back on the habit of calling doctors “heroes.” It reinforces the mythology that doctors can fix and control everything in healthcare. While individual doctors did their best, in reality it was the American health system that failed during the pandemic. (27:41)Pay-vidors. Dr. Nash points to the benefits of joint venture or ownership models, where payers and providers are economically aligned. This type of model incentivizes prevention, wellness, and upstream care. Kaiser Permanente and Humana are models of this. (34:58) How to Fix Healthcare. Dr. Nash has core recommendations to fix American Healthcare: improve medical education, realign healthcare payment incentives, refocus leadership on the patient, improve connectivity with consumer, and make digital health more inclusive. Relevant Links: Check out Dr. Nash's forthcoming book “How Covid Crashed the System: A Guide to Fixing American Health Care”Follow Dr. Nash on Twitter

The COVID pandemic has taken the lives of 1 million Americans in two years (more than twice the amount of Americans who lost their lives in WWII in four years).  This grim statistic came about because of a fundamentally broken, fragmented, expensive, inequitable, and occasionally unsafe healthcare system.  If the mission of our $4 trillion healthcare system is to improve health and prevent death from disease, we could look to no greater example of failure than the COVID-19 pandemic. Global pandemics are always horrific, but they also represent wonderful opportunities to learn by taking advantages of the crises invoked. The COVID crash of American healthcare is not unlike an airline crash.  Failure to learn and overcome our structural and cultural flaws will have calamitous results.  The airplane (American healthcare) will continue to crash again and again.  We would never tolerate these failures in aviation, but why do we accept them when it comes to healthcare?  The answer ultimately comes down to misalignment of financial incentives (fee-for-service medicine) and cultural headwinds related to structural racism, American exceptionalism, lack of trust, and tribalism. On this week's episode of Race to Value, we interview Dr. David Nash about his new book co-written with Charles Wohlforth, “How COVID Crashed the System: A Guide to Fixing American Health Care.”  Dr. David Nash is among the world's most respected experts on health care accountability, quality, and leadership. He is the founder of the Jefferson College of Population Health in Philadelphia and remains its founding dean emeritus.  In this interview, we do a deep dive on his new book explaining what went wrong as it relates to COVID and health care delivery.  This is a must-listen podcast as you will hear the unfiltered truth about the pandemic from the nation's foremost prophet of population health.  This podcast will make you angry and sad, but it will also leave you with optimism for the future of value-based care and population health management.  We can get better and do better by those we serve – we can win this Race to Value. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Ideas from network science about EA community building, published by vaidehi agarwalla on February 17, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. I've chosen to publish this post even though I do feel that some of the arguments could be refined further because I'm trying to not make perfect the enemy of good. Many thanks to David Nash, Gidon Kadosh, Xuan and Arjun Khandelwal for comments and suggestions on this post. TL:DR; Community builders are well positioned to make more high-quality connections for relatively low costs to make local groups and the EA community as a whole have more strong and weak ties, be more distributed (and thus resilient) and stay open to new connections. Key Takeaways We want EA to be a network of strong and weak ties. Strong ties can help improve coordination and collaboration within the community. Weak ties can help with bilateral information flow, reduce insularity and create a more welcoming community. (Read More) We want EA as a whole to be closer to a distributed network where people have strong connections with several other people, rather than a extremely centralised network with strong connections to only a few people. Having multiple connections can make groups more resilient. Over-centralisation of connections and information can be suboptimal. (Read More) We want EA to be an open network - individuals have capacity and are open to new connections. We are doing a fairly good job of this right now within the community, but could probably make a more concerted effort to engage with actors from other communities. (Read More) These network diagrams are missing important decision-relevant aspects of connection-making including the kinds of connections and the timing of those connections . (Read More) It may be high impact and low-cost to invest more time making high-quality connections within local groups and communities. We can make connections between members of a specific EA group to create friendship, peer bonding and solidarity, within different EA groups to help members connect with people or subcommunities they have more in common with, and to non-EAs to help them explore opportunities that EA may not be able to provide currently. (Read More) Some practical tips for making connections include modelling good 1-1s to help establish these as a normal and exciting part of the group culture, creating directories, making introductions to subcommunity community builders, encouraging members to attend EA conferences or attending them yourself and networking with others in mind. (Read More) Some common problems that may come up, and some rough attempts to troubleshoot them. (Read More) Some important linguistic notes: I refer to networks in the sense of “structures of connected people”, and specifically what the structure of an EA group could look like. I'm not thinking about it in the sense of “professional networks” a la Community vs Network. The terms I use (strong / distributed / open) are technical terms taken directly from network science (I am typically a fan of not adding new jargon to the EA lexicon). I don't mean to invoke common connotations associated with these terms and encourage the reader to replace these words with other, more neutral words if they find themselves doing so. We want to create. A network of strong ties and weak ties A strong tie between two people is a relationship that is quite strong - friends, family, close colleagues. It could be someone from whom you would feel comfortable asking a favour (for advice or an introduction, for example - this is the metric used by the CEA events team for EA Globals). We want to build strong ties between the local and global EA community because they can lead to better and cooperation, trust and coordination. It's worth asking - what does it take to get someone to feel comfort...

In recent years, the role of retail in health care has grown beyond the co-location of clinics and pharmacies, with many large retailers now expanding their care delivery practices to include full-service health centers, telehealth offerings, and home delivery of pharmaceuticals. Retailers like Walmart, CVS, Amazon, Walgreens, and Target are all pursuing a healthcare strategy. The opportunity to bring consumerism to the forefront in healthcare has never been more promising, and these retail companies are looking to deliver consumer-centric innovation in a way that the traditional healthcare system has been unable to. In addition to the provision of a high-touch, technology-enabled primary care delivered in existing brick-and-mortar facilities that are highly convenient and familiar to patients, these companies have begun to leverage other assets, including online platforms, robust supply chain and delivery infrastructures, and access to capital to grow their health care offerings. In this episode, you are going to hear from three thought leaders with unique perspectives on this important topic.
